2009-07-07 Thread Crimson_Fox
I believe so, to clarify: The functionality I was looking for is having
the desktop span two displays, but having the windows snap to a single
display when maximized. This wasn't possible under the previous driver
as it would crash when I attempted to enable dual displays in this
manner.

Can't hurt to attach my xorg conf and log, let me know if this is what
you're looking for.

I suspected that was so, thanks for confirming.
Btw, I would like it if you could subscribe directly to the upstream bug at

questions directly; if I'm in the role of a go-between you and upstream it

You have been subscribed to a public bug:

i copied this from a thread i started a little while back @ http
://ubuntu-virginia.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=6005986#post6005986

ok so here's the deal, all was well with gutsy, then i decided to
install the updates available... they were downloading from the hardy
repos and am apparently running hardy , this is where the problem
starts, i rebooted and just as gdm starts, the screen goes black, mouse
cursor appears and freezes.. no movement and the animation is also
frozen, it is one of those crappy mighty mouses and the LED in the mouse
turns off, there is also no response from the keyboard either (LOCK keys
don't do anything) the screen appears to refresh once as well.

If i run recovery mode, then type gdm, it runs all well.
I had similar problems when trying to install from the hardy livecd, but that
seems to freeze at random points during boot.
i am running a ga pcv2 mini itx mobo (via chipset) with openchrome video
drivers installed, from what i could find so far it appears to be xorg or the
kernel.

dunno if this helps but...

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 193578] Re: Basic graphics operations makes audio skip (>1 sec pauses)

2009-07-07 Thread Cory Davis
This issue occurs for me on a fully upgraded Jaunty (9.04) whenever I drag a
window. I have effects turned
completely off and have the window manager configured for "reduced_resources",
which shows a dragging
window as a wireframe.

This on a new Core i7 920 (quad core) with 6GB of RAM, running a 1-tab firefox,
a 2-tab gnome-terminal,
transmission with 3 torrents with a detail window open on one, and rhythmbox
playing mp3s, so I'm reasonably
certain there is plenty of memory and cpu cycles to spare. The mp3 files are
on a second hard drive, so
there should be no IO contention with the OS (and the drive light barely
flickers).

I've verified that grabbing (not even moving) ANY of the window title bars will
cause the audio to stop within
a couple of seconds - presumably when the buffer runs out. I do not have to be
scrolling or doing anything
remotely cpu intensive to trigger the issue.

I've also verified that the cross-fading backend workaround solves the
issue for me.

Possibly related, the terminal with a running `top` does not update
until after I've let go of the window header.

While I have not looked at the source code, the symptoms are consistent with
the audio buffering being done
in the graphical tool kit's main loop, which may get blocked by the presumably
system modal operation of
moving a window, or delayed by intensive X operations such as heavy scrolling.
I would expect that one of the
libraries involved then resyncs the audio to the system clock when operations
resume, such as might
happen on a slow machine or heavy IO, leading to skipping rather than paused
audio. I would guess that
the crossfading backend moves those operations to their own thread or process
that does not get blocked by
GUI operations. Just my hypothesis based on the GUI programming I've done in
the past.

You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Fresh install of Kubuntu 9.04 on a HP G30 244dx.

When I would try to open certian programs (jackctl, quassel, or gimp) or
while clicking the "preferences" tab in konqueror, computer would
completely lock up. Had to be hard-reset.

Went for help in the #ubuntu room at freenode, someone said that this
was the problem.

Found two work-arounds.

The first was to disable the nvidia drivers in the "hardware devices"
menu. This made the computer very slow however (experienced this before,
know it is due to lack of nvidia driver). So that didn't work well from
a usability standpoint. But it resolved the issue at hand.

The second workaround was to disable "desktop effects" in the settings.
This could be done while still using the nvidia driver. Disabling
desktop effects stops all programs I had found that lock up, from
locking up.

2009-07-07 Thread Philip Muskovac
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is important
for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers. You can learn
more about finding the right package at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. I have classified this bug as a
bug in xserver-xorg-video-openchrome.
For future reference you might be interested to know that a lot of applications
have bug reporting functionality built in to them. This can be accessed via
the Report a Problem option in the Help menu for the application with which you
are having an issue. You can learn more about this feature at

I'm seeing similar behaviour here. I use my laptop with an external
display, and usually use the external display in its native mode
(1920x1200) and disable the internal LCD. With the latest Karmic bits,
1920x1200 is no longer available, and xrandr only shows the VESA modes
despite the driver having captured correct EDID (as shown in Xorg.log):

not a solution for everyone.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 364497] Re: [RV630-XT] Jaunty + fglrx + Xinerama crashes X (Ubuntu 9.04 AMD64)

2009-07-07 Thread Nick Bertrand
Crimson_Fox, are you talking about the fglrx built-in Xinerama module or
the xorg Xinerama module? The fglrx Xinerama module causes maximized
windows to span multiple screens, so I'm hoping you're talking about the
xorg Xinerama module. Would you mind posting your xorg.conf and xorg
log?

To make it clear:
1) This was bug in openChrome driver
2) We were touching reserved bits of 0x2A register (bug)
3) Bug didn't exist in last release 0.2.903 and we belive it doesn't exist in
current trunk (actually from revision 746 == 25.04.2009)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 396655] Re: Intel ghraphics - VideoRam value locked. X.org Disregards manual value

2009-07-07 Thread AmadeuS

** Attachment added: "Xorg.0.log"
   http://launchpadlibrarian.net/28771085/Xorg.0.log

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

I have an integrated intel video card 4500m - (lspci - 00:02.1 Display
controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated
- Graphics Controller (rev 07)).
+ Graphics Controller (rev 07) running on Ubuntu Jaunty.

The card has 64mb of ram built into it and the rest it steals from the
system's memory. According to intel's specifications the total ammount
of memory the card can have is 768mb (windows indeed allocates this
amount for the card, Ubuntu however allocates only 256mb of VideoRam for
the card's activities (Fredora allocates 512mb).

I tried to give the card more memory by adding the appropriate line to
  xorg.xonf (512mb)

  VideoRam 524288

but for some reason the system decides it is "no longer a recommended value"

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 396655] [NEW] Intel ghraphics - VideoRam value locked. X.org Disregards manual value

2009-07-07 Thread AmadeuS
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

I have an integrated intel video card 4500m - (lspci - 00:02.1 Display
controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated
Graphics Controller (rev 07) running on Ubuntu Jaunty.

(WW) intel(0): VideoRam configuration found, which is no longer recommended.
(II) intel(0): Continuing with default 262144kB VideoRam instead of 524288 kB.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 328325] Re: Compiz with Nvidia 180: Desktop effect could not be enabled

2009-07-07 Thread Anthony McT
Hey Bryce,

Just wanted to say thanks and confirm that on my Sony Vaio VGN-Z520N
with dual Intel/Nvidia Video cards, this has allowed me to activate
compiz too!

I had followed the instructions of the Vaio Z Launcpad team, but I
couldn't run the Nvidia card, couldn't even have the driver installed,
as it would break compiz, even for the Intel card...

Found this thread, installed the .debs, works like a charm, switched to
Intel, still working...

Thanks! Ill report this to the others on the Vaio Z team...

-Aj

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 395316] Re: [karmic] Modesetting Xorg does not respect 'nomodeset' option

2009-07-07 Thread Robert Hooker
Launchpad automatically added the link to his comment, but he was
referring to the upstream bug report you linked. The proper method to
disable it is radeon.modeset=0, I was under the impression "nomodeset"
was an i915 specific option. this bug is fixed with linux-image-2.6.31-2
because the default option for radeon KMS is disabled now.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 351186] Re: [M76] [ubuntu 9.04] slow unminimizing with ati card and desktop effects enabled

2009-07-07 Thread LastHylian
In response to hlxshady's previous post, I will sometimes leave my PC on
overnight with Pidgin and firestarter only running and come back to a
slow and unresponsive PC due to Xorg using 100% CPU. I have installed
the patch and it fixes the problem pretty well. Gnome-Do still has about
a 1/2 to 3/4 sec delay, but that is passable. Can someone tell me how to
find out what is causing Xorg to eat up my CPU? I have:

Ubuntu 9.04 x64
ATI Radeon HD 3650
The patch applied

P.S. While we are here, can someone tell me how to make Metacity the
default window manager to load? Normally, compiz would load and I would
manually change it back to metacity, but after I applied the patch,
whenever compiz loads the screen is black (I have firestarter set to
load on startup). When the screen is black, I put in my password and the
screen comes back to normal. I would just like to have Metacity load and
skip the while process.

Thank you everyone, I appreciate your time! ^_^

2009-07-07 Thread hlxshady
I confirm that the patch works very well on
Lenovo T400 with Ubuntu 9.04 as well.

However, the problem that Xorg consumes a large amount of memory is
still pending ...

And I also found that, some process might be holding a lot of memory at the
same time, but after I locked the computer,
and woke it up, I can see that a certain amount of memory is released, by some
process other than Xorg.
While the Xorg is still holding a lot and eating more minute by minute.

Does anybody have this problem or have a clue on it ...

Thanks :)

still no joy.. blank screen etc, same logfile and same errors. I definitely
think this is a problem with mobility radeons, EDID and lcd detection. I still
get that whole 'nothing connected' and this is with only -1- video card in the
laptop and -1- LCD. Tres weird, n'est pas ?

The described patch "xserver-no-backfill" works flawlessly for me on

- Ubuntu 9.04 / 64 Bit
- Lenovo T500 with a Mobility Radeon HD 3650
- Catalyst 9.6

I experienced no performance loss in normal office work (not having
tried any "serious" 3D stuff though). But compiz works a lot snappier
now overall, so I can fully recommend this patch.

2009-07-07 Thread thewk
How can I install this patch? I tried with instructions here:

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/OpenChrome

but it complains about something...?

"f...@fsc-laptop:~/Työpöytä$ patch -p0 < modesetting.patch

Perhaps you used the wrong -p or --strip option?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 396546] [NEW] Ctrl-Alt-F1 does not drop to a console

2009-07-07 Thread Craig Estep
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

Note: this works using the 2.6.31-1 kernel on the same computer.

Using an up-to-date karmic, when using the key combination Ctrl-Alt-F1,
I do not get a console. Instead, the screen freezes and I get the weird
color corruption on the background, as seen in the screenshot. Pressing
Ctrl-Alt-F7 brings back the desktop.
