I believe so, to clarify: The functionality I was looking for is having the desktop span two displays, but having the windows snap to a single display when maximized. This wasn't possible under the previous driver as it would crash when I attempted to enable dual displays in this manner. You have been subscribed to a public bug: i copied this from a thread i started a little while back @ http ://ubuntu-virginia.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=6005986#post6005986 ok so here's the deal, all was well with gutsy, then i decided to install the updates available... they were downloading from the hardy repos and am apparently running hardy , this is where the problem starts, i rebooted and just as gdm starts, the screen goes black, mouse cursor appears and freezes.. no movement and the animation is also frozen, it is one of those crappy mighty mouses and the LED in the mouse turns off, there is also no response from the keyboard either (LOCK keys don't do anything) the screen appears to refresh once as well. If i run recovery mode, then type gdm, it runs all well. I had similar problems when trying to install from the hardy livecd, but that seems to freeze at random points during boot. i am running a ga pcv2 mini itx mobo (via chipset) with openchrome video drivers installed, from what i could find so far it appears to be xorg or the kernel. dunno if this helps but... > lspci 00:00.0 Host bridge: VIA Technologies, Inc. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 193578] Re: Basic graphics operations makes audio skip (>1 sec pauses)
This issue occurs for me on a fully upgraded Jaunty (9.04) whenever I drag a window. I have effects turned completely off and have the window manager configured for "reduced_resources", which shows a dragging window as a wireframe. This on a new Core i7 920 (quad core) with 6GB of RAM, running a 1-tab firefox, a 2-tab gnome-terminal, transmission with 3 torrents with a detail window open on one, and rhythmbox playing mp3s, so I'm reasonably certain there is plenty of memory and cpu cycles to spare. The mp3 files are on a second hard drive, so there should be no IO contention with the OS (and the drive light barely flickers). I've verified that grabbing (not even moving) ANY of the window title bars will cause the audio to stop within a couple of seconds - presumably when the buffer runs out. I do not have to be scrolling or doing anything remotely cpu intensive to trigger the issue. I've also verified that the cross-fading backend workaround solves the issue for me. Possibly related, the terminal with a running `top` does not update until after I've let go of the window header. While I have not looked at the source code, the symptoms are consistent with the audio buffering being done in the graphical tool kit's main loop, which may get blocked by the presumably system modal operation of moving a window, or delayed by intensive X operations such as heavy scrolling. I would expect that one of the libraries involved then resyncs the audio to the system clock when operations resume, such as might happen on a slow machine or heavy IO, leading to skipping rather than paused audio. I would guess that the crossfading backend moves those operations to their own thread or process that does not get blocked by GUI operations. Just my hypothesis based on the GUI programming I've done in the past. The first was to disable the nvidia drivers in the "hardware devices" menu. This made the computer very slow however (experienced this before, know it is due to lack of nvidia driver). Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. I have classified this bug as a bug in xserver-xorg-video-openchrome. For future reference you might be interested to know that a lot of applications have bug reporting functionality built in to them. This can be accessed via the Report a Problem option in the Help menu for the application with which you are having an issue. In response to hlxshady's previous post, I will sometimes leave my PC on overnight with Pidgin and firestarter only running and come back to a slow and unresponsive PC due to Xorg using 100% CPU. I have installed the patch and it fixes the problem pretty well. Gnome-Do still has about a 1/2 to 3/4 sec delay, but that is passable. Can someone tell me how to find out what is causing Xorg to eat up my CPU? I have: Ubuntu 9.04 x64 ATI Radeon HD 3650 The patch applied P.S. While we are here, can someone tell me how to make Metacity the default window manager to load? Normally, compiz would load and I would manually change it back to metacity, but after I applied the patch, whenever compiz loads the screen is black (I have firestarter set to load on startup). When the screen is black, I put in my password and the screen comes back to normal. I would just like to have Metacity load and skip the while process. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 351186] Re: [M76] [ubuntu 9.04] slow unminimizing with ati card and desktop effects enabled
I confirm that the patch works very well on Lenovo T400 with Ubuntu 9.04 as well. However, the problem that Xorg consumes a large amount of memory is still pending ... And I also found that, some process might be holding a lot of memory at the same time, but after I locked the computer, and woke it up, I can see that a certain amount of memory is released, by some process other than Xorg. While the Xorg is still holding a lot and eating more minute by minute. Does anybody have this problem or have a clue on it ...
