Hi Mike, thanks, it's good to hear the MTRR problem is at least gone.

The next step with freezes is to collect a batchbuffer dump. Directions
on how to do this are available here:

First, you may want to update to latest Karmic, since a few more freeze
fixes have filtered in, though I don't know of any specific to 855 so no
guarantees...

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 393936] [NEW] External monitor detection broken when using KMS on Intel GM965

2009-07-10 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Since kernel version 2.6.30-9.10 the external monitor doesn't get properly
detected when it was disconnected before disabling it before, when using KMS.
2.6.30-8.9 was the last version where it worked properly.
intel driver version:
- 2.7.99.1+git20090602.ec2fde7c-0ubuntu2 (Karmic)
- 2.7.99.901+git20090630.170cae0c-0ubuntu0sarvatt (latest git)

Steps to reproduce the bug:
1. screen is on LVDS of the notebook
2. connect external VGA
3. activate external monitor: xrandr --output VGA1 --auto
4. disconnect external monitor
5. deactivate external monitor: xrandr --output VGA1 --off
6. again connect the VGA plug
= xrandr --query shows: VGA1 disconnected

after that it is impossible to get the external monitor working.
The only solution is to reboot the system.

Hi Matthias,

I've forwarded your bug upstream to
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=22698 - please subscribe to
this bug report in case upstream needs further information or wishes you
to test something. Be aware though that upstream has declared 815 no
longer supported so this is kind of a long shot.

Btw the similar MGA issue you reported before is similar only in
symptom; that uses a different video driver and looks to be failing for
an unrelated reason (failing to read EDID I guess). We'll just focus on
-intel on this bug though.

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 359831] Re: [i945gm] all video players crash with BadAlloc error (no Compiz, Xv) if Virtual width 2048.

2009-07-10 Thread Kehan Harman
I was getting this error and then realised that there were multiple users
with X sessions logged in to the machine (using the user switch applet) with
one of them being an automatic logon using GDM. I have since discovered that
the first person to log on (the automatic GDM one) can play video just fine,
while other users (X sessions) can't play video and get the BadAlloc error
(not sure about virtual width as this is a single head laptop). Apologies if
this isn't relevant to this bug.
Cheers,
Kehan

 Status in Mactel Support: New
Status in X.org xf86-video-intel: In Progress
Status in “xserver-xorg-video-intel” package in Ubuntu: Triaged

 Bug description:
 Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

xine, mplayer, or totem all crash when attempting to play any video file
with an error like this one from xine:
This is xine (X11 gui) - a free video player v0.99.6cvs.
 (c) 2000-2007 The xine Team.
X Error of failed request: BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)
Major opcode of failed request: 132 (XVideo)
Minor opcode of failed request: 19 ()
Serial number of failed request: 4731
Current serial number in output stream: 4732

This worked in Intrepid and does not work since updating to the Jaunty beta
this morning. I noticed it removing the xserver-xorg-video-i810 package and
I can see other similar bugs saying that this has been deprecated in favor
 of xserver-xorg-video-intel.

mplayer -vo x11 file.avi works, so it seems very likely this is an xvideo
 problem.

One oddity: at first, 'mplayer file.avi' crashed immediately. After trying
to run it and other video players a few times, now it opens a black window,
plays the audio, and spams X11 error: BadAlloc (insufficient resources for
operation) to console. I didn't change any settings (cross my heart), I was
just hitting up and rerunning the last couple attempts to show someone in
 the room.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 384730] Re: [i945GM] screen goes black about once per day after upgrading to latest intel drivers

2009-07-10 Thread Bryce Harrington
This sounds a LOT like a bug fixed with the karmic -intel. Like Geir
mentioned in comment #9, it would be great if you could test and verify
that on karmic, but since it's been a month with no response we'll be
closing it as believed-fixed at this point, and you can re-open if you
find it to still be an issue when you upgrade to karmic.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 392410] Re: [MIR] UNR packages

2009-07-10 Thread David Planella
And more info on the fbreader MIR, regarding internationalization:

 5. UI standards:
* User-visible strings are internationalized using standard gettext system
? Does not seem to use gettext.
* Package with translatable strings builds a PO template during package
 build ? See previous.
* End-user applications ship a desktop file ? Yes, it ships a desktop file.

 10. Internationalization:
* Are graphical applications translatable? Do they support gettext? See
 point 5.

Localization support is not yet completely implemented upstream. The
application does not use gettext, but the UI can be localized through
XML files. Interface localization seems to be one of their listed
requests at http://www.fbreader.org/more/requests.php, but there's no
roadmap defined for implementation nor it is described whether they are
going to use gettext.

That effectively means that in the current state fbreader would not be
translatable in Ubuntu and its localized interface would only available
in English, Finnish, French, Russian, Swedish and Ukrainian (for the
official distribution). Additionally, there are more localizations
available for Arabic, Czech, Indonesian and Italian.

If fbreader were to be included in main, Ubuntu Translators should be
consulted about it.

More information here: http://www.fbreader.org/docs/i18n.php

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 394490] Re: xrandr: Configure crtc 0 invalid time

2009-07-10 Thread jayprakash
A plead to package maintainer:
Please confirm what is the root of the problem.
intel drivers? -then why does ubuntu display settings work.
xrandr code?

For it looks like, the developers made some big change in driver, and xrandr
didn't count with that.
Also I believe that grandr and ubuntu display settings are using underlying
libraries of xrandr, and not xrandr binary (as arandr does).
That would mean only some little bug in some if/else part of the xrandr code
and not in libxrandr2.

Please...

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 397769] [NEW] xrandr unable to arrange monitors

2009-07-10 Thread Łukasz Kuryło
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-core

Some time ago I was using Jaunty with xorg-edgers repo added now I've switched
to Karmik.
I use 2 monitors, built in LVDS 1680x1050 and external 1920x1200. After in
Jaunty I received updated xserver-xorg-core including Make RANDR 'set'
timestamps follow client specified time. Bug 21987. commit from upstream,
xrandr --output VGA --right-of LVDS --auto stopped working saying something
about invalid config time. Then I switched to karmik, xrandr --verbose
--output VGA --right-of LVDS --auto doesn't produce any output and has no
effect on display.

** Affects: xorg-server (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 371739] Re: Fast scrolling with continuous mode enabled results in garbage inside the window

2009-07-10 Thread Bryce Harrington
Well, next I'd like to forward this issue upstream, but first it must be
retested on latest development version of Karmic to make sure the issue
still happens there with the latest code. ISO images are available at
http://cdimages.ubuntu.com/releases/karmic/. If you can reproduce it in
the LiveCD environment, you shouldn't need to modify your installed
system. Also please attach a fresh Xorg.0.log and dmesg from this
testing.

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 396894] Re: gdm login shows on secondary monitor if twinviewenabled on nvidia

2009-07-10 Thread Yuri Nikiforov
How can mouse be on the secondary monitor every time when I turn on my PC ?!
This bug appeared some weeks ago, when login screen was changed. Before if
was full screen login invitation and now it's a small window shown in the
center of screen with my wallpaper on the foreground.

Did I mentioned that I'm using Karmic Koala alpha 2 ?

I also have NVIDIA twinview enabled.
However, in my experience, the GDM login prompt does not always show on the
secondary monitor.
What actually determines its positioning is the current location of the
mouse cursor.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is
important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers. You
can learn more about finding the right package at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. I have classified this bug
as a bug in nvidia-graphics-drivers-180.
For future reference you might be interested to know that a lot of
applications have bug reporting functionality built in to them. This can
be accessed via the Report a Problem option in the Help menu for the
application with which you are having an issue. You can learn more about
this feature at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 382719] Re: [Q35]: cannot switch to virtual terminals; video=fbcon must be specified (KMS bug)

2009-07-10 Thread Johan Van de Wauw
While checking the X/intel/kms wiki page, I noticed someone else had similar
problems.
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/KernelModeSetting
gotunandan: https://launchpad.net/~gotunandan

Works fine with modprobe.d method.
When using vga=xxx in kernal boot options, Ctrl+Alt+F[1-6] does not switch to
the command line interface, instead shows a frozen GUI but mouse pointer
disappears. But Ctrl+Alt+F7, gets back the GUI normally. Doing this multiple
times restarts X

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 392410] Re: [MIR] UNR packages

2009-07-10 Thread Martin Pitt
fbreader review:
 - package comes with its own GUI library, which apparently isn't used anywhere
else
 - package pulls in qt3, which the KDE team tries to get rid of; is it possible
to just build a qt4 variant?
 - package b-deps on libhildon-1-dev, libosso-dev; I thought this stack was
pretty much obsolete now? Can these be dropped, so that zlibrary just builds
gtk/qt4/text backends?
 - the missing gettext support is a bit of a bummer; OTOH,
./src/fbreader/FBReaderActionCode.cpp is the central location for all strings,
so wrapping those into _() and adding some standard intltool build system stuff
doesn't sound too hard. Can this be proposed and contributed upstream? The XML
files should be converted to standard po files, and then gotten rid of.

2009-07-10 Thread Mike Rose
Well I got it to happen again, everything updated/upgraded as of about
15 minutes ago. Switched back over to xserver-xorg-video-intel (from
xserver-xorg-video-intel-2.4) rebooted, followed the instructions at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/Freeze#How%20to%20Get%20a%20Batchbuffer%20Dump%20(-intel%20only)

Enjoy your batchbuffer dump driver-gods :)
Note that my framebuffer is larger than default because I have two monitors
(internal LCD + external CRT), though this issue occurs on LCD only too. Both
running at 1024x768

Let me know if there's anything else I can do to help

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 394490] Re: xrandr: Configure crtc 0 invalid time

2009-07-10 Thread Tormod Volden
Can somebody please try to nail down which version of the -intel driver
caused the breakage? The best would be to know the exact git commit, but
the package version should be fine too, since there are usually very few
commits per new package.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 391084] Re: [i855] screen corruption when switching resolution

2009-07-10 Thread Jonas Haraldsson
Hi,

Until now I have only tested on Karmic with the Alpha2 live-CD.

Today I upgraded my laptop to Karmic and updated to all the newest
packages.

After the upgrade the resolution of the external display changed back to
1024x768. (I had it working at 1280x1024).
Changing the resolution with xrandr did not work at all any more. Nothing
happens when i type, for example:
xrandr --output VGA --mode 1280x1024, or some other resolution, no error
message, no flickering display, just nothing.

Then I opened the Gnome display settings dialog and when I unchecked
Mirror displays and turned off the laptop monitor, I could change the
external monitor resolution to 1280x1024. This worked fine.

Then I opened the Gnome display settings dialog again and turned on the
laptop monitor, with the laptop monitor and external monitor side-by-
side. I was informed that the virtual resolution in xorg.conf would be
changed and was then prompted to log out and in again.

After restarting the computer, the X-Server and GDM stopped working
completely. I only get a text mode login-prompt and nothing more.

So now I can not get GDM running at all. I am not sure of if this is a new bug.
Any hint of what to do next would be appreciated.

I attach the Xorg.0.log and Xorg.0.log.old.

After tomorrow, I will not have access to this computer again until in
september.

If 20090629 was working but 20090701 was not, I would suspect
http://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/driver/xf86-video-
intel/commit/?id=cec9fc6f6cffce186606f39982d0d78ff7c63bbf or

intel/commit/?id=53e248af4365232416d2143a791a07c6751f8319 but there were
many commits at that time.

Are you all using KMS?

Please also attach Xorg.0.log and the output from xrandr --verbose

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 391084] Re: [i855] screen corruption when switching resolution

2009-07-10 Thread Jonas Haraldsson
After restoring xorg.conf to default (removing virtual resolution),
X-Server / GDM works again.

Now changing resolution of the external display works without problems, even
with
System - Preferences - Appearance - Visual Effects: normal.

But the other problem remains, that xrandr does not work (nothing
happens).

I attach Xorg.0.log and Xorg.0.log.old agagin.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 274512] Re: Agiler usb mouse not working on laptops

2009-07-10 Thread Sven Berkvens-Matthijsse
I've tried to open only one of the two devices that become available
when the mouse is plugged in, but this does not help either. So it does
not seem to be caused by both devices being opened at once.
