[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 401045] Re: X crashes in FindGlyphByHash

2009-07-22 Thread Robert Hooker
You're using a mixture of jaunty and karmic packages here, if you're
going to use edgers change the sources to karmic. If you dont want to
use xorg-edgers any longer, then remove it completely from your sources,
and do a dpkg -l | grep sarvatt (or ~jaunty perhaps) and for every
package it lists add /karmic to the end of apt-get (sudo apt-get install
packagename/karmic packagename2/karmic for example)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 403339] [NEW] problem with key repeat, extra key up events

2009-07-22 Thread warren
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

This is a well known bug discussed elsewhere, the problem is although
there are fixes available, none have been implemented. When a key is
held down, the system should wait a bit then generate a string of key
down events. The key up event should only be triggered when the key is
actually physically released. Currently, key presses produce a chain of
key down and key up events. Based on what I have read, the error is
introduced in a sloppy fix of another problem, where some legitimate key
up events were not occurring. This is only a serious problem for video
games, as other software does not require exacting standards for input.

ProblemType: Bug
Architecture: i386

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 351291] Re: [RS690M] screen flickers when CPU is at low frequency

2009-07-22 Thread Andrew J Lea
Yeah, I was using the July 10th release of Tormod Volden's driver when I didn't
have any resolution options. No flicker though.
I have temporarily solved the problem by doing the full manual install of the
radeonhd driver (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RadeonHD), and then in the
xorg.conf file, instead of "EXA" Acceleration, I specified "XAA". Now I have
almost no flicker at all and my cheese and skype video still work,... just as
long as my desktop effects aren't enabled as well. If desktop effects are
enabled, then skype just will display a black screen instead of webcam feed,
and cheese will open as soon as the camera comes on.
It never stops...

2009-07-22 Thread Pablo Almeida
So, I tested Karmic alpha 2, running on live cd. It was exactly like when I
activated UXA on Jaunty. The whole System crashes after less than a minute.
On Karmic, all I need was to open a window to make it crash. I thought it was
because of the fade animation. But I couldn't deactivate the effects because I
can't even open the window.
Also, I couldn't get the Xorg.0.log nor the dmesg.

I was a very happy intrepid user, everything was working out-of-the-box.

After installing Jaunty RC last night, I noticed that the performance with
compiz effects is a bit sluggish.
After installing the new updates this morning, I found out that compiz
blacklisted my graphics card and I lost my compositing.

For the performance issue, I had to install xserver-xorg-video-
intel-2.4, and for restoring my compositing I had to skip compiz's
blacklist check and then reloading the window manager twice after each
reboot from fusion-icon to get my compiz effects and compositing back.

Adding Option "AccelMethod" "UXA" to my xorg.conf made the graphics
unstable, and Option "MigrationHeuristic" "greedy" made minor
performance improvement but not as much as that I get with downgrading
to driver 2.4.

I'm on a Dell Inspiron 1525 and this is my graphics card: 00:02.0 VGA
compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated
Graphics Controller (rev 0c)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 401776] Re: screen corruption

2009-07-22 Thread Rolf Leggewie
qgit is affected as well. In qgit I realized something interesting.
When I click one of the lines that represent a commit in the upper part
of the window, the corruption for that subwindow clears. The corruption
comes back when bringing another window to the front to cover the qgit
window and then switching back to gqit. It is possible to reverse the
corruption again by clicking one of the lines.

I also edited my xorg.conf to this:

Section "Device"
Identifier "VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8378 [S3 UniChrome] Integrated Video"
   Driver "openchrome"

And that solved it for me. Now I can use VLC, Totem and Mplayer without
any problems.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 403175] [NEW] Karmic: New GDM doesn't play well with ati fglrx

2009-07-22 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: gdm

Installing from 20090722.1 alternate cd while the radeon driver is in
play gdm displays correctly.

However if you use jockey and install the fglrx drivers for your ati
card the new gdm screen turn grey on reboot and you can't access the
console using ctrl-alt-Fx either.

This is almost a hard freeze in that nothing you do has any effect on
the machine apart from a hard reset or a power off.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 394498] Re: Incorrect autodetection of appropriate DPI

2009-07-22 Thread Tony Whitmore
Hi Bryce, sorry for the delay in responding, I've been on holiday!

I'm not sure why none of the files attached to the report the DPI as
29x39. This was the DPI reported by xdpyinfo when running X without the
DisplaySize hardcoded in xorg.conf or when X is started without the VGA
cable attached to the PC. I've not used the command line bug reporting
tool before. I was told to start X using the "broken" configuration and
then start X with a "working" default then run the ubuntu bug command
line tool. That's what I did, but I see that the xorg.conf and xdpyinfo
output attached to the report is the "working" version, not the "broken"
one.

I put a DisplaySize line in to xorg.conf, calculated as best I could
following the formula given on the ubuntu forums, which suited my 32"
TFT TV. This is a 16:9 display but I don't think the graphics card in
the MPC-L computer supports widescreen resolutions, so I was aiming to
run the display at 1280x1024. With this DisplaySize line in place, text
is rendered clearly. Without it, text is tiny on the screen.

Having looked at the wiki page you posted above it seems likely that it
is an EDID issue. The "Max Image Size" in the xorg log file is 10cm
bigger in both dimensioons than the visible screen size on the TV. I'm
not sure whether this is sufficiently incorrect to cause this error?

I have had this issue with Xubuntu and Openbox. Due to the very low spec
of the CPU in the MPC-L it is very slow running KDE or GNOME. However,
Openbox uses gdm AIUI and the issue is present there.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 378617] Re: [G45] No DisplayPort support in -intel driver

2009-07-22 Thread Piotr Morgwai Kotarbiński
It seems that driver in my PPA does not work with kernel 2.6.31: I have similar
symptoms like Eduard. I added appropriate warning in description of PPA.
Personally I won't upgrade my Jaunty to kernel 2.6.31 probably and will be
using driver from my PPA.

Cheers

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 327428] Re: mouse pointer no longer has 1 pixel precision

2009-07-22 Thread Aielyn
nxmehta - I don't recall all of the finer details, but what I do
remember is this:

https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xfree86-driver-
synaptics/0.15.2-0ubuntu8

choose your build (probably i386, as mine is, or amd64, as with
botlobsta), and download the deb. Uninstall the current xserver-xorg-
input-synaptics if you currently have it installed, then install the
aforementioned deb file. It will show up in synaptics as xserver-xorg-
input-synaptics. You will undoubtedly want to select "Lock Version" on
it once it's installed, otherwise it will constantly bug you to update
to the current, broken version.

There are more steps to get it working really well, most involving
setting up the .fdi file so that HAL makes the touchpad behave the way
that you want - the first thing you'll probably want to change is the
speed of the mouse.

Meanwhile, I looked through what I could of the source code and the diff for
the 0.99.3 version, but was entirely unable to see anything hinting at why this
problem exists at all. But then, it's probably really obvious, and I just don't
see it due to lack of experience.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 398778] [NEW] konsole flicker

2009-07-22 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: konsole

OS: Kubuntu 9.04 (64-bit)
KDE Version: 4.3-RC2 (4.2.96)
System: Dell Studio XPS 16
Graphics Adapter: ATI Radeon HD 3670
Video Driver: fglrx
Compositing: XRender

Konsole window flickers. Does not appear to be the border of the window,
rather, just the panel/viewable area. This bug is especially noticeable
when scrolling through a large file within vim.

My settings are mostly defaults with the exception of "Unlimited
scrolling" and "Linux Colors" in Appearance settings.

Some times, the "off point" of the flickering persists where I cannot
see a majority of the konsole panel (just the background wallpaper).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 402863] Re: Dell mini 10v touchpad is horribly jumpy

2009-07-22 Thread Alberto Milone
I have uploaded a new version for Karmic to my PPA. See the attached
debdiff.

Explanation of my changes:
1) - 105_correct_multifinger_click.patch: Drop patch as it breaks
the expected behavior for multitouch clicking (LP: #320585).
This is simply a revert.

2) - 111_add_active_area.patch: Backport "Synaptics Area" property
  from upstream (LP: #402863).
This is a patch of mine which was accepted by upstream but I had to adapt it
for Karmic as the upstream driver has changed a bit.

3) - 112_jumpy_cursor_quirks.patch: Add Quirk for Dell Mini 10v
   touchpad (LP: #402863).
This patch hasn't been accepted by upstream yet. It acts differently according
to the kind of touchpad:
* non-multitouch devices: things should improve only for the Dell Mini 10v and
for the Hp Mini 1000 MI. Other netbooks/laptops which don't have multitouch
devices should not be affected.
* multitouch devices: things should improve for all devices.

4) - 113_add_capabilities.patch: Backport read-only "Synaptics
 Capabilities" property from upstream.
I backported this read-only property from upstream as we need it for an OEM
project.

Feedback is welcome

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 394422] Re: [i830] KMS karmic black screen

Hello together all i830 fans,

I own the same notebook as Otto (IBM Thinkpad R31) with the same
graphics chipset. So lspci -vv is the same as above (proved that).

Unfortunately __ after todays update __ of the system it __ locks __
1. either into black screen (without "nomodeset") and or
2. after (!) gnome started half way - I can hear the login sound when machines
suddenly hangs (with "nomodeset").

- The xserver-xorg-video-intel driver is of version 2.8.0-0ubuntu1.
- The kernel is of version 2.6.31-3-generic.
- I do not use DRI (DRI "false" in xorg.conf).

cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Section "Device"
Identifier "i830"
Driver "intel"
Option "DRI" "false"
EndSection

Unfortunately both Xorg.log's are empty due to the computer crash, so I cannot
post them here.
Starting in X mode is not possible any more ;(

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 403037] Re: karmic xorg hang on i830 video driver 2.8.0

2009-07-22 Thread jerrylamos
1-3 with intel driver 2.8.0 on IBM Thinkpad R31 i830 video graphics.
Hangs after login with brown screen and cursor. Keyboard not responsive
except power off.

Karmic was running O.K. fresh install of daily build 20090217. Then did
apt-get update, dist-upgrade on 20090722 which included intel driver
2.8.0.

Dual booted Intrepid (distinctly better video response!) to get
.xsession-errors, Xorg.0.log, syslog, lspci -vvnn which will be attached
following.

I'm attempting to get today's daily build to see if it has 2.8.0 however
rsync is running slowly.

Any other data needed? Anything to try?

Thanks, Jerry

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 351291] Re: [RS690M] screen flickers when CPU is at low frequency

2009-07-22 Thread Jens Janssen
Besides the PPA from Tormod Volden you can try the PPA from Xorg-Edgers:

https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/ppa

But be aware: Both PPAs are (daily) snapshots and can kill you XServer.
If a Snapshot is working fine, leave it as it is. Do not update.

My suggestion is to wait until Tormod Volden releases the next snapshot.
This can take a few days but can solve your problem or make it worse
than ever before :-)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 402992] [NEW] Update problem by graphic solution

2009-07-22 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: ubuntu-docs

Years ago I changed from Suse because often problems.
Ubuntu is stabile and the (small) updates are working normally good.

One problem of first installation years ago is now again the same.
The update from 7.04 to 8.04 was fine. Now from 8.04 to 8.10 the system stopped.

The start screen with graphic was okay and the following text modus was okay.
Then was a german message on my screen: "to big size 1280 x 1024" and the
system stopped. After pressing power off the system shut down with graphic mode!

The solution was to copy the old xorg.conf to etc/X11.

The only thing where Suse was better was to identify the graphic system.

My generelly suggestion: To add in the recovery mode a option "boot with
standard / simple
graphic solution"

Because my system and all the small updates worked fine, it should be possible
to use the
working graphic setting for the system after update!

Best regards

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 351291] Re: [RS690M] screen flickers when CPU is at low frequency

2009-07-22 Thread Andrew J Lea
I am having this same problem and have been chasing the solution for a while.
I have an RS690M chip in an intergrated X1200 card in my Toshiba Satellite A215
with TurionX2 64 chipset.
I tried, in order:
sudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf
and added the following line under the Section "Device":
Option "AccelMethod" "XAA"

This virtually eliminated flickering, but it also eliminated the use of
skype and cheese and other webcam-streaming apps, so I returned to the
default xorg.conf configuration.

So then I tried the updated:
 xserver-xorg-video-ati - 1:6.12.99andxserver-xorg-video-radeon -
1:6.12.99
many people listed it as the fix for thier machines, but when it booted, I had
a really fuzzy, bloated display that looked like it was 600x800 resolution, but
no flickering. I would like to try it again and see if there is a way I can
change resolution to match my screen (1280x800), becaue this seems like the
best driver yet, no flicker at all.

So I returned to the Jaunty default:
 xserver-xorg-video-ati - 1:6.12.2andxserver-xorg-video-radeon -
1:6.12.2
and everything worked just as with the original install.

Then I installed just the radeonhd 1.2.5 .deb package files, but
without the full ubuntu-recommended installation guide
(https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RadeonHD), just did a double click
.deb package install. This changed nothing that I could tell, so I
entered xorg.conf again and pointed it towards the radeonhd driver
still can't tell a difference. lots of flicker, but still have skype
and cheese webcam stream, just like the default. I am going through the
steps to try the manual install of the radeonhd driver, but my hopes
aren't very high. One question on this: do I need to purge the default
radeon and ati 1:6.12.2

Any other suggestions on combinations of packages or advice on changing
the resolution with the 1:6.12.99 package or something I may have
missed?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 402975] [NEW] system freezes and reboots during app startup

2009-07-22 Thread andrehe
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nvidia-180-kernel-source

1)
Description:Ubuntu 9.04
Release:9.04

32 Bit

2)
nvidia-180-kernel-source:
  Installed: 180.44-0ubuntu1
  Candidate: 180.44-0ubuntu1
  Version table:
 *** 180.44-0ubuntu1 0
500 http://de.archive.ubuntu.com jaunty/restricted Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

3)
I expect the application to start up without a problem and the window to popup
offering a graphical user interface.
Details:
The application which exhibits this behavior is from the static code analyzer
package Mathworks PolySpace R2009b (C/C++, V3) prerelease. Starting the viewer
/usr/local/PolySpace/PolySpace_Common/Viewer/bin/polyspace-viewer first shows a
loading dialog, and when the progress bar reaches the right end, a window with
the GUI is rendered. The application is written in JAVA.

4)
Just when the progress bar of the loading dialog reaches the end and the window
with the GUI is imminent to open, the mouse pointer freezes and after one
minute the system reboots.
The freeze does not happen with the Open Source nv driver. Maybe an update of
the nVidia driver package to a more recent version helps.
With the older nVidia 173.14.16 driver (offered by jockey), there is no system
freeze, but the GUI is not rendered correctly: the window is filled with one
color but hovering the mouse over the window shows that the GUI dialog elements
are there, just not visible.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 366222] Re: kubuntu jaunty hangs completely while using mouse

2009-07-22 Thread Kasper Peeters
Please reopen, this bug is still present in jaunty as of kernel
2.6.28-13. I experience this on a system with an nVidia GeForce 6150 LE
using the nvidia 180 driver on a Dell C521. In my case the USB mouse
hangs, without any trace in /var/log/messages or dmesg. The USB keyboard
usually still works at that stage. Unplugging and re-plugging the mouse
gives no sign in dmesg. I have not yet tried nvidia 173.

It is a very hard to debug problem, but a definite showstopper, so
please give this some attention.

Public bug reported:

hi all,

when accidently pressed the 'guest session' button, i noticed not only
the session isn't loading, but the entire computer freezes (in a way),
also all hardware seems to be calm (no buttons flashing just not
responsive at all -- not even Ctrl+Alt+Backspace)

i believe this has something to do with an earlier bug i filed,
referring the Suspend "crash" (which causes the system to log off)

Using Jaunty, 9.04.
