2009-08-13 Thread John Johansen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

Xorg stopped responding to input from the keyboard and mouse. The
mouse cursor still moves, notifications are still being displayed,
but input from mouse and keyboard have no effect.

The vt can be switch to and is working, switching back and forth has
no effect.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 412860] Re: Xorg not responding to input

2009-08-13 Thread Diggory
I've possibly been hit by the same bug... not been able to track it down much
yet. It may be different because the symtoms are different:
Everything starts fine, then inactive applications stop responding to mouse
clicks. Active applications vary, sometimes fine, sometimes they don't work
either, at least twice the only thing that worked was scrolling down with the
mouse wheel (couldn't click or scroll back up).
Keyboard input has always been fine.

I noticed the OP has a thinkpad X61; my machine is a T61 so may well
have similar hardware. I'm running jaunty with latest updates; nvidia
binary driver.

Still got to work out what's actually causing this; did think it was kde
4.2, but xfce had the same problem.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 412860] Re: Xorg not responding to input

2009-08-13 Thread John Johansen
Now that you mention it, I did have weird application input errors very
similar to what you describe a few hours before this complete lock up.
At the time I attributed it to the network as I doing a git clone and
several of the apps were X forwarded from another machine.

Also I was working in a forwarded X window when the input freeze
happened.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 412907] [NEW] X crashes and system is only responsive via sys-req on keyboard

2009-08-13 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

I have tried to report this bug at
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/341363 where I was
told to report a separate bug.

I am running Jaunty (fully up-to-date as of 13th July 2009) 64 bit version. My
kern.log file shows alot of
[drm:i915_getparam] *ERROR* Unknown parameter 6
messages just before my system crashes.

My system is crashing in this way (on average) at least once a day at
the moment. I believe these messages in the kern.log file are the last
messages produced before such a crash.

When such a crash happens the graphics system is totally unresponsive,
alt-ctr-backspace twice does not restart x (dont-zap disabled). When I
try to get to a virtual terminal say Ctr-F1 - nothing happens. I can use
sys-req to restart the system. I can ssh in to the machine and sound etc
still works. Trying to restart gdm via /etc/init.d/gdm restart fails. In
the end I restart using sys-req.

This bug is making Ubuntu totally unusable right now. I am pretty sure
it due to the Intel graphic driver. I will attach logs of various
command in the next posts.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 412907] Re: X crashes and system is only responsive via sys-req on keyboard

2009-08-13 Thread Liam O'Reilly
I will attach a report of dmesg after a reboot of the crash (that I
guess will happen later today).

This crash seems to happen more the more graphic intensive applications
I run, i.e., compiz / OpenGL seem to cause more crashes. Also the crash
seems to happen a lot when opening Firefox, but that may just be because
I open Firefox a lot. I have no way of forcing a crash.

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

When kdm login screen should appear I see only black screen and mouse

place, where login name or pasword box should be drawn. Vesa works,
although very slow, i'm currently testing radeonhd, which seems to work
fine. I cannot test fglrx, because it doesn't show in jockey (bug report

The bug in Gentoo has been marked as FIXED:

http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=274672#c9
Please upgrade to the in tree 185.x.y series for a resolution.

Has a fix been made available upstream? I didn't spot a patch in gentoo-

I have no clue how to get it in a 9.04 package, anyone?

2009-08-13 Thread Andy Whitcroft
We have confirmed that these error messages are benign. They occur just
before a crash commonly simply as they occur at specific points in the
life cycle of the X server. If you are having a real crash it is
highly unlikely to be related to these specific messages. Please file a
separate bug for crashes.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 412907] Re: X crashes and system is only responsive via sys-req on keyboard

2009-08-13 Thread MrAuer
I am also now waiting for my Eee 901 to crash again, now I have X server
and display driver debug symbols installed and Apport running. I hope it
crashes as often as yesterday now that I can hope to trace it :)

On this machine, the crashes happen more often with XFCE than Gnome (I
have tried bot Xubuntu and regular Ubuntu on it) - even when I do not
have XFCEs own compositing, nor Compiz, on. Under Gnome using Compiz
perhaps made the crashes more common - and under Gnome, I often get a
hard lock instead of just X crashing and restarting, like under XFCE.

I will report here when I get more data.

2009-08-13 Thread kylea
This is so silly - The file /etc/X11/xorg.conf is write protected for a
user and the process doing the update requires that the file ALREADY
exist before the update. So we have to manually remember to create it
before using the nvidia tool.

Must drive novices crazy.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 405943] Re: [regression] rapid pointer movements with touchpad ignored

2009-08-13 Thread Alberto Milone
@Marc

Please follow these steps so that I can see what's happening:

1. Enable the universe repository and refresh your packages list.

2. Download and install the deb package of synaptics-report (which
works on hardy, jaunty and karmic) from this PPA:
https://launchpad.net/~albertomilone/+archive/ppa

3. Press CTRL-ALT-F1 to go to the 1st terminal (you'll see only the
command line) and log in.

4. Type the following command:

sudo synaptics-report

and follow the instructions which the program will give you.

5. Press ALT-F7 to go back to your desktop environment

6. Look for the synaptics_report.log file in the same directory in which
you executed the synaptics-report command (usually your home directory)
and attach the file.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 411704] Re: intermittent system crashes supposedly caused by intel xorg driver

2009-08-13 Thread Lars Volker
I experienced the same behaviour during the last 2 days. Now I did an
aptitude safe-upgrade with the result, that more and more system error
similiar to the ones above show up. I, too use the Intel-driver on an
Lenovo T400 notebook.

Right now I bootet to an Live USB-Stick, without any errors arising in
the system log so far, so it looks, as if my installation is corrupt.

I also did an memtest86 test of the system, which showed no errors.

Attached is the output from dmesg, taken until X crashed due to multiple
xfce-applets failing.

Regards, Lars

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 412740] Re: no nvidia video desktop since update kernel and packages

2009-08-13 Thread makoshark
When I rebooted i got a menu that said it was in low graphics mode, with
4 options, some had to do with troubleshooting, manually edit
configuration, I don't remember the rest. But I can edit xorg.config
file to call the nvidia driver and the menu comes back. You can view the
log file from the menu but it does not tell me were the log is.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 406460] Re: [i845] xorg hang on video driver 2.8.0

2009-08-13 Thread jerrylamos
Latest update 20090812 (is this A4?) is worse.

On CD Live boots to black screen, cursor won't move. If I boot recovery
mode I can log in with ssh however continuing boot to black screen
keyboard doesn't work, mouse doesn't work, ssh stops responding.

Updated the hard disk to same level. Boots to a brown screen, no
cursor, keyboard doesn't work, ssh stops responding.

Since that was a hard disk boot, I re-booted with karmic A2 and copied
over the Xorg.0.log, .xsession-errors, and dmesg which I'll attach.

I rebooted in recovery, nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf added Driver vesa
which works. I'm entering this comment from that.

BTW, last line in apt.sources.list is
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/bryceharrington/blue/ubuntu karmic main
and dpkg lists intel driver as 2:2.8.0-0ubuntu2

2009-08-13 Thread burli
Same here with Intel Graphics, but it's not randomly. It's exactly 10
Minutes after login and it happens never again until I reboot.

After it happens one time the screen is still on, even if the Laptop is
idle

Sometimes the internal laptop display (LVDS) goes off (like a DPMS standby)

Moving the mouse or typing on the keyboard makes the screen turn on again

Just to reiterate the 180 driver installed via systemadministrationhardware
drivers, was working fine until the latest updates via
systemadministrationupdate manager. There were over a hundred so it would
be a daunting task to find what caused this. The updates were preformed on My
new ubuntu and the ubuntu on the old hard drive (both are active). I am moving

Status in “gnome-power-manager” package in Fedora: In Progress

 Bug description:
 Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

Sometimes the internal laptop display (LVDS) goes off (like a DPMS standby)
for no reason (there is user activity going on).
Moving the mouse or typing on the keyboard makes the screen turn on again (no
password request or user logout happens)

This happens on a fully updated Karmic with a mobility radeon X700 using the
 standard radeon driver.

I'd ask that you not do this, but rather file a new bug report. The
reason is that developers look at a max of one issue per bug report, and
so your issue will not get investigated if it is appended to someone
else's. Launchpad makes it very cheap and easy to mark two bugs dupes,
so if it does turn out your issue is the same as Liam's, we are able to
handle that situation most cleanly if your issue is on a separate bug
report. Thanks.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 339336] [NEW] Acer Ferrari 3000 fails to resume from standby in Jaunty

2009-08-13 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

System is:

Description:Ubuntu jaunty (development branch)
Release:9.04

I think the problem is with the kernel. Why:

Both Ubuntu and Kubuntu (9.04) behave the same way; after restart, they
both say they want to report a kernel bug. In case of Ubuntu the
reporting tool crashed while trying to report it (I commented on the
appropriate bug) and in the case of Kubuntu the crash reporter app
stopped appearing after I got my Internet connection, so I couldn't
report it.

The laptop is equipped with an Athlon XP 2500+ (Barton), chipset VIA
KM400, graphics Radeon 9200, sound VIA 8235.

What I expected to happen:

Computer resumes.

What happens:

Complete hang. Usually I see checkerboard corruption on the screen (I
often see this, e.g. when the computer starts X during boot, or in prior
versions of Ubuntu, when resuming from standby. Usually stays on the
screen for about 1-2 secs and then is correctly redrawn), but sometimes
the screen remains completely black (not even the backlight comes on)
and once, when booting from the LiveCD, I saw the cursor and could move
it for a bit, and then it froze.

The hang happens with and without compositing effects enabled.

Suspend works correctly on 8.04 and I don't remember it not working on
previous versions. Did not try 8.10.

Following instructions from
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspend I did not get any useful
info from dmesg. But maybe someone will, so I'm attaching it.

Please advise what other info I could provide. Thank you.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 411294] Re: Resume broken with new ATI stack

Hi Alexander,

I've forwarded your bug upstream to
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=23290 and subscribed you to
it. It would probably help if you could attach your dmesg and a
screenshot to the upstream bug. Beyond that, please keep an eye out for
any requests from upstream for further information or things they need
you to test. Thanks ahead of time.

 Hi swfind,

Please attach the output of `lspci -vvnn`, and attach your
/var/log/Xorg.0.log (and maybe Xorg.0.log.old) file from after reproducing
this issue. If you've made any customizations to your /etc/X11/xorg.conf
 please attach that as well.

I would be happy to comply with your request, however I do not know
where to find the info you are seeking. When this error occurs I have
to reboot the system. I have searched my hard drive for the files you
want but the search comes up empty. Please advise!
