[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 438557] [NEW] ALT-Fx, ALT-left, ALT-right switch VT

2009-09-29 Thread Stevel
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

When in an X session, pressing ALT-F1 to ALT-F6 or ALT-left/right
switches the user to the corresponding VT.

This happens after the keydown-event is sent to the active X VT. The
keyup-event is sent to the X application when the user switches back to
the X VT.

This results in, for example, when gnome-terminal is configured on
ALT-F3, continuously opening terminal windows until the user switches
back to the X VT.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 438341] Re: [Karmic Alpha6] displays flickers and no gdm is started

2009-09-29 Thread lasombra
** Description changed:

After an upgrade last night I do not get any graphical user interface (gdm)
anymore. Instead, ubuntu stucks in the terminal mode and flickers. It seems
that something is written to the screen (I just can see aa and after I get
again the login prompt).
Due to this flickering I am not able to login, as it takes the key storkes
only when the login prompt is available.

If I start in recovery mode, I do not have this flickering effect. I am
able to login. If I try to start gdm with
- [code]sudo gdm[/code]

2009-09-29 Thread simon
I had the same kind of bug with 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI
Technologies Inc Mobility Radeon HD 3450.

On a usb-created live Ubuntu 9.10, the graphical screen blinks. I let
the computer boot all night and in the morning it had booted. From the
dmesg and messages log, it finished blinking after more than an hour
(4467 seconds...).

I hereby attach Xorg.0.log and /var/log/messages.

2009-09-29 Thread marmuta
Thank you, Tormod! The app-freezes with the PPA are gone, only for some
reason the dri device isn't created automatically. I have to mknod
/dev/dri/card0 c 226 0 chmod 666 /dev/dri/card0. I probably brought
this onto myself though. Still investigating.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 391461] Re: Compiz Slow on Karmic w/ NVIDIA and 2.6.30 Kernel

2009-09-29 Thread Ernst
That's true, but in that thread everyone who experienced this problem
has been running the patch without problems. So, if we can predict which
systems are affected (it seems a combination of certain mobile
processors and gpu's), Ubuntu can offer this 'experimental' driver for
which we expect it works better than the unmodified driver.

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 391461] Re: Compiz Slow on Karmic w/ NVIDIA and 2.6.30 Kernel

2009-09-29 Thread Darren Worrall
The GPU is largely irrelevant (other than being an nVidia card), the bug
stems from an erratum, at least affecting the Intel T2500. The nVidia driver
was relying on certain behaviours in the kernel pertaining to the CPU which
changed in 2.6.30.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 436037] Re: nvidia restricted drivers 170 and 185 module dont get loaded by kernel and cause gdm not to load

2009-09-29 Thread LActive
I just changed the card with an older GeForce 8500GT/PCI/SSE2 and it
works much better without any nvidia drivers with 9.04 than with the
FX220.

Activation now appears in the Hardware Drivers (does not appear with
the FX220 installed), but activation causes the system not to start
properly with either card installed - similar than the error described
above. Replacing the standard xorg.conf with another now allows at least
normal resulutions; but no 3D without drivers of course.

The FX220 only allow 640x320 800x600. The system is a Medion Akoya
E7330 D.

Addition to #6: I was also trying different terminals (tty1 to tty5), which
ends up somehow in stopping flickering (I can't reproduce yet).
However, when switching back wit Ctrl+Alt+F7, flickering starts again.
Switching back to tty1 I can see at least the message Window manager error:

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 432178] Re: [CX700] Mouse, keyboard, and power button freeze

2009-09-29 Thread Roberto Rosario
I added the following to xorg:

Section ServerLayout
Identifier Configure Server
Option AllowEmptyInputfalse
EndSection

This resulted in duplicated keystrokes and the frozen keyboard/mouse
problem still happened after a while.

In my case using an external mouse and the following grub command
options almost eradicate the problem (is only triggered after several
hours): idle=halt io_delay=none pci=routeirq clocksource=hpet

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 363375] Re: [multi screen] mouse position sometimes wrong

2009-09-29 Thread David Schneider
The PPA page is here: https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/ppa
As it says, you should use the packages as a whole, not picking and choosing,
since the packages tend to require the other packages with the same version.

Down below on the page is a Adding this PPA to your system. If you're not
using Karmic, you can open up the Technical Details section there, and add that
to your sources list.
You'll also want to add the signing key to your apt-key, the process which can
be found under the what is this link.

Installing a bleeding edge x-server is asking for trouble, though--for me, the
server didn't match the nvidia driver version I had, which prevented x windows
from starting. I had to get updated nvidia drivers from the nvidia-vdpau page.
If you're not comfortable with fixing a broken x-windows install from the
console, I wouldn't recommend going this route...

black desktop.

At first when I installed those packages X crashed when I turned on 3d but I
realized it's because it was still using my self-compiled libdrm that I used to
test old versions of mesa.
When i asked APT to reinstall the libdrm package, back to normal and black

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 425303] Re: [RV730] xorg-edgers: Mist of artifacts in highlight color over menus and buttons

2009-09-29 Thread marmuta
This is odd, grep dri/ /var/log lists nothing because the device is
created as /dev/card0 instead of /dev/dri/card0

I'll attach the output of
sudo udevadm test /class/drm/card0

Is udev supposed to add /dri to the path or should DEVNAME below be dri/card0?
cat /sys/class/drm/card0/uevent
MAJOR=226
MINOR=0
DEVNAME=card0

Anyway, I've added
SUBSYSTEM==drm, SYMLINK{unique}+=dri/$kernel to some rules file
and now I have the device /dev/card0 and a symlink to /dev/dri/card0 and dri
works well. Really well actually, except for this little bug.

No, I just checked. This bug is not present in

And just for the record. With 7.6.0~git20090817.7c422387-0ubuntu6
etracer -a (Extreme Tux Racer) gets a nice and speedy Average FPS:
29.5419. I believe to have seen only less than half that with
7.6.0~git20090928.6829ef74-0ubuntu1~xup~1 though that needs to be
rechecked.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 435570] Re: xorg hangs during karmic install

2009-09-29 Thread Nagappan Alagappan
Alberto,

Found the issue :) Finally !

Steps I followed:

1. Install command line version of Ubuntu
2. Install gnome-session x11-xserver-utils xinit package
3. Uninstall xserver-xorg-video-nv (this was causing the issue, we had 2
monitors connected to this system)

Now everything works fine as expected

Also installed nvidia-185-kernel-source and its dependency package, now
X works fine on 2 monitors.

Thanks

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 425303] Re: [RV730] xorg-edgers: Mist of artifacts in highlight color over menus and buttons

2009-09-29 Thread Tormod Volden
Great debugging there, marmuta. On my system I see this in the udevadm output:
udev_event_execute_rules: no node name set, will use kernel supplied name
'dri/card0'
while you get:
udev_event_execute_rules: no node name set, will use kernel supplied name
'card0'

I know the old Jaunty udev rules would add dri/ explicitly.

This is something that has changed in the main kernel (and in the udev
rules) but not yet in the drm-modules-source.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 433801] [NEW] touchpad overwhelms i8042 with int 12

2009-09-29 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

This bug usually manifests itself as a sticky keyboard, but the
keyboard is fine.

1) if I disable the Internal Pointer Device in the bios of my laptop, the bug
goes away completely.
2) by doing cat /proc/interrupts | grep i8042 I can watch the interrupt count
on int 12 climbing. Even a very light touch on the trackpad (too light to even
cause the cursor to move), will cause about 600 interrupts. A 1/2 or 1/4 second
touch will generate ~600 interrupts and take about 2 to 3 seconds to process.
Any cursor movement using the trackpad prevents any typing for at least 2
seconds.
3) I can reproduce the problem 100% by touching the trackpad while typing. Any
typing is delayed or lost while the touchpad is being touched.
4) The trackpad and the keyboard both share the i8042, so it seems pretty clear
that problem is around here somewhere.

PS. My laptop is a Toshiba Portege M300. I'm running jaunty, but I've had the
problem in feist and hardy too.

2009-09-29 Thread Dimas
I can confirm this in Jaunty using xorg-edgers repos. My VGA is an ATI
Radeon 4870. I have some severe screen corruption, worst than
Giovanni's.

And I have another related problem: the mouse click (and focus) position
is above the cursor. To use anything in Blender's interface I have to
click about 15px below the point I really want to click.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 438850] Re: xterm ignores VT100 widget resources color16 through color255

2009-09-29 Thread Thomas Dickey
Not a bug in xterm, but a limitation of the X libraries.

http://invisible-island.net/xterm/xterm.log.html#xterm_188
Patch #188 - 2004/5/12 - XFree86 4.4.99.6

modify initialization of 256- and 88-colors so that colors beyond 16 are
normally not X resources. This works around a hard-coded limit in Xt
which breaks xterm when 256-colors and luit are both configured (report
by Noah Friedman).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 351186] Re: [M76] [ubuntu 9.04] slow unminimizing with ati card and desktop effects enabled

2009-09-29 Thread Felix Kuehling
I have an alternative patch (no PPA, sorry), that replaces the
backfilling of pixmaps with clearing them. Pixmaps with an alpha channel
will be initialized transparent. Pixmaps without an alpha channel will
be initialized black. That replaces temporary corruption observed with
KDE menus with temporary black squares until the actual menu appears.
Performance should be about the same as with the no-backfill patch but
this one fixes the potential security issues of exposing random memory
contents.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 434416] Re: Xorg grabs all of RAM; UI appears frozen

2009-09-29 Thread Bill Harris
In case it's of help, I've been running top in batch mode on a 15-minute
interval to see if anything funny happens before a freeze. Here's one
such trace from today. If there's another trace you need to help
prioritize or debug this, just ask.

I'm up to multiple freezes per day now and looking for any workaround to
make the computer usable again.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 439138] [NEW] [karmic] Xorg 100% CPU utilization after startup

2009-09-29 Thread Tom Jaeger
Public bug reported:

On my system, Xorg takes up 100% of (one of the) CPUs after startup.
The problem goes away once the X server is restarted. This happens both
with the xserver from the archive and the latest 1.7 snapshot. This
might be a race related to the fact that ubuntu is installed on an SSD.
It seems to be the same problem that is discussed in this ubuntuforums
thread:

http://swiss.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1272691

Here is what I could find out about the problem:

strace reports repeated (failing) calls to

ioctl(5, TCFLSH, 0x2) = -1 EIO (Input/output error)

where fd 5 is /dev/tty7. This translates to a tcflush call in
drain_console().  Backtrace:

So we have a fd in some kind of error state that causes select() to
always return right away. I don't know enugh about how select() works
to identify the problem, though.

I was going to attach an Xorg.log, but strangly enough the problem

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 433801] Re: touchpad overwhelms i8042 with int 12

2009-09-29 Thread Rod Davison
No, I haven't. I'm downloading alpha-6 as I type this. I'll give it a
try. Has any work been done on the touchpad driver between Jaunty and
Karmic?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 351186] Re: [M76] [ubuntu 9.04] slow unminimizing with ati card and desktop effects enabled

2009-09-29 Thread Michel
I think it has been mentioned before but it may be worth mentioning
again.

I have a Radeon HD 3650 chipset and experienced this bug which, in my
opinion, was a show stopper, within 6 hours of the official Jaunty
release. It did shake my resolve to stick with Linux and very nearly
reverted to Windows (sigh!). I only went exclusively Linux about a year
ago.

The only satisfactory answer, for me, was to install ATI latest driver.
It can be downloaded here:
http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/Pages/index.aspx .

This makes my Jaunty Kubuntu work like it should albeit marginally
slower than Intrepid Ibex version. I have not installed the suggested
PPA. I do use compiz and all is fine and with acceptable speed with the
latest driver (which I believe is different from the distro one).

I hope this may help somebody else.

It may help to post your experience with these drivers for other
problematic ATI chip-sets.

Michel
