It's gdm/kdm/other DM open this log file and keep it open; so they'd
need to watch it and truncate it regularly.

"According to Google", it seems that BIOS 11CA fixes the issue on the
Samsung NC10. I'll try it today and give you some feedback. For now, I
have the issue with BIOS 07CA.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 458781] [NEW] bluetooth mouse fails to reconnect

2009-10-22 Thread Jamin W. Collins
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-input-mouse

Initially my bluetooth mouse connects and appears to work quite well.
However, after the mouse has sat idle for a period of time moving it
again has no effect on the X cursor. However, I can clearly see from
the laptop's bluetooth LED that the system is receiving movement data.

Tailing the Xorg.0.log file revealed the following entries when the
mouse stops functioning:

(EE) BELKIN MOUSE: Failed to reopen device after 10 attempts.
(II) config/hal: Adding input device BELKIN MOUSE
(**) BELKIN MOUSE: always reports core events
(**) BELKIN MOUSE: Device: "/dev/input/event10"
(WW) BELKIN MOUSE: device file already in use. Ignoring.
(II) UnloadModule: "evdev"
(EE) PreInit returned NULL for "BELKIN MOUSE"
(EE) config/hal: NewInputDeviceRequest failed (8)

Once this occurs, functionality can be restored by switching to one of
the text consoles (VT1-6) and back to X, at which time the following
entries appear in the Xorg.0.log:

(II) Open ACPI successful (/var/run/acpid.socket)
(II) NVIDIA(0): Setting mode "1920x1200_50"
(II) NVIDIA(0): ACPI display change hotkey events enabled: the X server is new
(II) NVIDIA(0): enough to receive ACPI display change hotkey events.
(--) SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad: touchpad found
(II) TPPS/2 IBM TrackPoint: Device reopened after 1 attempts.
(II) ThinkPad Extra Buttons: Device reopened after 1 attempts.
(II) Sleep Button: Device reopened after 1 attempts.
(II) Power Button: Device reopened after 1 attempts.
(II) AT Translated Set 2 keyboard: Device reopened after 1 attempts.
(II) Video Bus: Device reopened after 1 attempts.
(II) Macintosh mouse button emulation: Device reopened after 1 attempts.
(II) BELKIN MOUSE: Device reopened after 1 attempts.
(II) BELKIN MOUSE: Device reopened after 1 attempts.
(WW) BELKIN MOUSE: Refusing to enable duplicate device.
(II) BELKIN MOUSE: Device reopened after 1 attempts.
(WW) BELKIN MOUSE: Refusing to enable duplicate device.
(II) BELKIN MOUSE: Device reopened after 1 attempts.
(WW) BELKIN MOUSE: Refusing to enable duplicate device.
(II) BELKIN MOUSE: Device reopened after 1 attempts.
(WW) BELKIN MOUSE: Refusing to enable duplicate device.
(II) BELKIN MOUSE: Device reopened after 1 attempts.
(WW) BELKIN MOUSE: Refusing to enable duplicate device.
(II) BELKIN MOUSE: Device reopened after 1 attempts.
(WW) BELKIN MOUSE: Refusing to enable duplicate device.
(II) BELKIN MOUSE: Device reopened after 1 attempts.
(WW) BELKIN MOUSE: Refusing to enable duplicate device.
(II) BELKIN MOUSE: Device reopened after 1 attempts.
(WW) BELKIN MOUSE: Refusing to enable duplicate device.

The mouse will remain functional until it has once again sat idle for a
while. I assume the mouse is entering some form of power saving mode.

Under Jaunty, the mouse would reconnect after these idle periods without
issue.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 455614] Re: don't mess with the pc file

2009-10-22 Thread Robert Ancell
(Note that this is not critical as anything using libSM should work in
an Ubuntu system as it currently stands as the headers are still
includable and ld will automatically link against libICE via libSM)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 455614] Re: don't mess with the pc file

2009-10-22 Thread Robert Ancell
The change in Ubuntu should be fixed because it is:
a) inconsistent between OSs
b) removes dependency information (pkg-config cannot detect that libSM will not
work without libICE)
c) cannot handle libICE headers being installed in a different location (e.g.
by overriding PKG_CONFIG_PATH for a test version).

*sigh* I was expecting this. This is a bug in the xorg-video driver for
ATI. It's not an issue of notify-osd. notify-osd just runs fine, either
composited or non-composited, under intel and nvidia. I'll reassign this
to the correct package.

Best regards ...

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 454366] [NEW] libnotify notifications appear as weird tartan patterns

2009-10-22 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

before upgrading to 9.10, pidgin would show received messages in a
libnotify popup. Now, instead of showing received messages, it pops up
a random tartan pattern instead.

Running "notify-send hello" in a terminal produces the same effect.

No text is visible, just a pattern of horizontal and vertical lines of
apparently random colours.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 458697] [NEW] [Karmic] Xorg crashed with SIGSEGV during gdm login with high resolutions

2009-10-22 Thread Simon Déziel
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

When I have a high resolution (1280x1024 +) screen hooked to my computer
I'm unable to pass the gdm login (X restarts after username+password). I
have those error in /var/log/kern.log :

[ 57.477288] mtrr: base(0x4400) is not aligned on a size(0x3aa000) boundary
[ 57.631701] [drm] Using v1.4 init.
[ 60.812018] [drm:drm_reclaim_locked_buffers] *ERROR* reclaim_buffers_locked()
deadlock. Please rework this
[ 60.812027] driver to use reclaim_buffers_idlelocked() instead.
[ 60.812032] I will go on reclaiming the buffers anyway.
[ 94.560032] [drm:i810_wait_ring] *ERROR* space: 65520 wanted 65528
[ 94.560101] [drm:i810_wait_ring] *ERROR* lockup

I can have a graphical session only when I change my monitor for one
with a low resolution (1024x768) but I still have this error :

[ 21.055357] mtrr: base(0x4400) is not aligned on a size(0x18)
boundary
[ 21.317786] [drm] Using v1.4 init.
[ 21.944021] eth0: no IPv6 routers present
[ 24.812023] [drm:drm_reclaim_locked_buffers] *ERROR*
reclaim_buffers_locked() deadlock. Please rework this
[   24.812036]  driver to use reclaim_buffers_idlelocked() instead.
[ 24.812041] I will go on reclaiming the buffers anyway.

I have already reported this bug (LP #456814) but with an older xorg-
server package and now I have a easy method to reproduce it.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 285192] Re: nvidia-settings crashed with SIGSEGV in g_closure_invoke()

2009-10-22 Thread wolfen69
This is still happening in 9.10 RC (64bit). When setting up Twinview via
nvidia-settings, I get "failed to parse existing x config file
'/etc/X11/xorg.conf'

I really hope this is fixed before final release. This is a major bug
that will affect all users with nvidia cards and dual monitors.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 458625] [NEW] restrictive & unalterable resolutions & low refresh rates

2009-10-22 Thread BavarianPH
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

This is an addendum to "restrictive & unalterable resolutions & low
refresh rates" Bug # 450055 -

Many of us would like the developers & maintainers to give more
attention to this bug.

Resolution, refresh rate & speed of the video / graphics of a PC is of
the utmost importance!

I have installed the x-updates from 10/17/09 (1ubuntu2~xup~3) fro Intel,
also mesa-drivers.

Speed is ok for me, except for watching onl movies.

Resolutions & refresh rates have not improved.

The black frames around windows have returned, I could live with that,

but screen flicker at 75 Hz is painful to my eyes, & tiresome as well.

I do not know how to get the attention of Bryce Harrington, I have
e-mailed him,

but I am not aware of proper protocol to follow with the Ubuntu
community.

Anyway, here are some more attachments, but it looks like video will be
regressed in Karmic Koala.

BavarianPH,

Ubuntu forever!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 444123] Re: karmic beta live cd no display output (no X, no tty)

2009-10-22 Thread Sebastian Bengtsson
Have done some more testing and concluded that it actually boots all the
way to the desktop.

After boot is finished and the cd spinns down I can hit Alt-F2, type sudo
reboot, and the reboot is initated.
Tried with another monitor (TFT, previously only tried with CRT). Same results.
The TFT monitor complains about "scanning out of range" when I push it's
auto-adjust button. The CRT did not say that (although it has the ability to do
so).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 457977] Re: gdm random crashes

2009-10-22 Thread Panagiotis Skintzos
I get same error messages in :0-greeter.log and a strange thing has started for
couple of days now in Karmic:
When boot starts, while usplash is on and I see the usplash ubuntu image, I
hear the gdm login sound but all the login UI elements are not visible. I have
to go in a terminal and restart gdm (usually 2 or 3 times) in order to see any
input element in the greeter. Perhaps a gdm bug instead?
Besides that I started to get random X crashes while working. Don't use compiz
just metacity compositing and an nvidia card.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 60448] Re: .xsession_errors file grows out of control & saturates disk space

2009-10-22 Thread mlaverdiere
Here's a suggestion (keeping in mind that I'm not a developer,
programmer or anything alike - I'm just an "advanced user"): What about
a cron job that would run a script a regular interval (let's say each
hour), and delete any oldest content of the .xsession-errors file that
exceeds any reasonable amount of files pace (out of nowhere, I would say
10MB - that's already a pretty heavy log!).

Again, my reasoning is that I prefer to have a functional and healthy
system with a partial error-log file than a complete error-log file that
I won't be able to access because it has rendered the system unusable...

Of course, there may some more elegant solution... Anyway, thanks for
helping.

2009-10-22 Thread bodwick
Cristian - does 'xset dpms force off' switch the backlight off?
If so try switching the gnome screensaver to 1h and in power management set
turning off the screen in 5min or some other value less than 1h. On my machine
the screensaver blanked the screen with backlight on and didn't allow gnome
power manager turn it off.

Could someone @canonical add a word of caution to the release notes? If

Also note that the files that ubuntu-bug automatically attached may have
misleading information - in order to get X to start so I could file the
bug I had to revert to the xserver-xorg-video-intel package found in the

Xorg.0.log.borked is the log from the failed attempt, which I made

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 458588] [NEW] X fails to start with "i810 module not found" error

2009-10-22 Thread Paganini
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

After updating to the most recent xserver-xorg-video-intel found in the
x-swat PPA (uploaded on the 19th of October I think) X fails to start
with this error:

(EE) Failed to load module "i810" (module does not exist, 0)

This may be related to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source
/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/431955, which has the same error message.
However I am running Jaunty and not Karmic.

I'm on an IBM Thinkpad X40 laptop with an Intel 82852/855GM Integrated
Graphics Device [8086:3582] (rev 02)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 374780] Re: [RV250] thinkpad t40 with ati radeon rv 250 (M 9000) freezes

2009-10-22 Thread Martin Spacek
I just did a full update of my karmic installation on my Thinkpad T41.
Turning on compiz *still* causes screen corruption, with full system
lockup soon after. I also just tried booting from the karmic release
candidate live cd (off of USB), which still defaults to having compiz
turned on. Again, I get screen corruption, followed by a full system
lockup soon after. This is embarrassing. We're 7 days aways from the
final release, and this is still happening.

Compiz needs to default to off until this is fixed. Affected systems are
probably any with the low-end Radeon RV250 chipset (== Mobility 9000) or
less. It would probably be safest to include systems with Mobility 9200
chipsets as well. This needs to happen now!

There's no need for compiz on these systems anyway - graphics are
wonderfully fast with it turned off - finally on the order of Windows XP
fast. We can turn an absolutely critical bug into a great enhancement
for these older laptops. What does it take to get this done?

That looks just like it. I've seen it in web pages too (since I'm
looking out for it).

And it looks like launchpad has added the tracker for us :)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 458571] [NEW] Fullscreen scaling mode by default on intel GMA with KMS

2009-10-22 Thread psvo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

When I use KMS on my notebook with 16:10 LVDS, Xorg defaults to
fullscreen scaling mode. That causes incorrect aspect ratio for non-
native 4:3 modes (they are scaled to 16:10).

After running `xrandr --output LVDS1 --set "scaling mode" Aspect` is
works as without KMS. E.g. 4:3 modes are displayed with black bar on
sides.

This default setting is especially annoying when running fullscreen
games and is hard to solve for unexperienced users.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 286424] Re: nvidia-settings crashes when user clicks Save To X Configuration File

2009-10-22 Thread kit
Sorry if this comes up as a double post, but...

Now it is clear the xorg.conf is missing just one line can this be
retagged hundredpapercuts whatever so at least one developer fixes it
for the final Karmic release? Could adding that single line cause a
regression for anything else?

Jonathan,

I agree the problem is probably lower-level but i fail to see how it can be
related to xserver-xorg-input-keyboard? I can understand how it was first
assigned there but since the problem even affects a shell started by sshd my
guess is it's even lower-level than xserver-xorg-input-keyboard?

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 443318] Re: Konsole LAG/Freezes when Typing - Kubuntu Karmic

2009-10-22 Thread Gustavo A . Díaz
Great, but... is that for sure? Is amazing how nice all works here in
OpenSUSE 11.2... and I don't want to change of OS really, always used Debian
based distro, but so far I don't have choice...
How this get fixed before final release.

And btw, I don't think is related to Konsole at all. Cause the freezes that
the OS have (when this happen I can't even restart, logout or switch to
console with Ctrl+Alt+Fx), the small freezes when typing on a
konsole/yakuake/terminal/whatever/... So, i have my doubs... but likely
nobody is helping to debug (yeah, I repeat it again...) is hard to be sure
of what I causing the problems in this notebook model (to be exactly, mine
is Acer Aspire 5520-5281). Also there is no much info on the logs about it.

Thanks.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 374780] Re: [RV250] thinkpad t40 with ati radeon rv 250 (M 9000) freezes

2009-10-22 Thread Alisdair Tullo
I tested the 9.10 (Karmic) Release Candidate as a Live CD on my ThinkPad
T42 (which was running Ubuntu 8.10 with no problems).

The desktop startup noise plays, and the panels appear with no icons.
The desktop background has not loaded. At this point the display
freezes, including the mouse pointer, and the machine is unresponsive to
anything but a hard reset.

I tested this twice more in case it was a random glitch, and the same
symptoms appeared.

I tried booting using a 9.04 Live CD and did not encounter the problem.

2009-10-22 Thread John Gilmore
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 378391 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/378391

This is *not* a duplicate. The original bug was about an unintentional
regression. That has been fixed. This is a complaint about what
appears to be an intentional regression (making tap-to-click work as
before, BUT ONLY IF YOU TURN IT ON IN MOUSE SETTINGS). We can and
should debate what to do about this -- but it's a DIFFERENT PROBLEM and
doesn't deserve to be discarded into the the "we fixed that" pile.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 286424] Re: nvidia-settings crashes when user clicks Save To X Configuration File

2009-10-22 Thread oranges
Greetings, just wanted to let you guys know, I solved this problem by
doing:

a) sudo nvidia-xconfig <- it should detect the missing "default
display/screen" entry and create a new file for you to write in.

then do...

b) sudo nvidia-settings and do the usual thing to save your settings.

That's all I did - it worked.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 413296] Re: Nvidia binary driver won't build with 2.6.31-rt kernel

2009-10-22 Thread Iain Bucław
@Trulan, how was NViDIA installed before hand?

The first time you tried and failed was probably because you had
residual pieces of a previous NViDIA installation still present (ie:
from manual installation from the nv site), and so it was more likely an
X11 failure rather than a driver failure. As your keyboard was still
responsive, that further rules out an issue with the driver. (The real
issue here is that after the change from init_MUTEX to semaphore_init,
the system goes into a deadlock, and only a REISUB or Hard shutdown will
get you out of it).

Regards
Iain

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 458306] [NEW] X server locks up when Acrobat Reader is started

2009-10-22 Thread Martin Ling
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

If I run acroread, the X server locks up immediately. The Acrobat window
never appears. Usually the cursor still moves, but the display doesn't
update. In one case the cursor stopped moving too. Either way, I can
still use Ctrl-Alt-Fn to switch VTs, and restart the X server, but the
problem seems to be always repeatable.

The machine is a Dell Latitude D610, with an ATI graphics chipset, using
the radeon driver.

2009-10-22 Thread Daniel Holbert

Just to clarify -- that doesn't sound like this bug "has been fixed".
It sounds like you worked around the bug on your own machine, but the
bug remains in un-worked-around installations of Ubuntu.

@froller:
> appending gksu before the menu command gives

True... but that's unrelated to this bug.

> Of course one needs to remove the /etc/X11/xorg.conf

To clarify -- if it weren't for this crasher bug, one should *not* need
to do that. nvidia-settings is smart enough to read your existing
xorg.conf and modify it -- the problem here is that it *crashes* when
doing that, if the xorg.conf is missing a particular declaration. (which
it apparently is on stock Ubuntu installs -- see comment 64, comment 69)

appending gksu before the menu command gives the appropriate permissions
to write to the file. Of course one needs to remove the
/etc/X11/xorg.conf file first so the program can save as new.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 397617] Re: brightness no more working on karmic (KMS)

2009-10-22 Thread Drew Snellgrove
There seem to be a number of people, including Macbook users, reporting
that their backlight is non-functional in Karmic. This bug seems the
most relevant and most comments seemed to point to this one as well.

I'm using a Macbook 2,1 and don't have a usable backlight, leaving me
stuck at max brightness (AAAH, my poor eyes!). The backlight existed
and worked with Hardy, Intrepid, and Jaunty (with a couple issues that
aren't relevant here).

$ xbacklight
No outputs have backlight property
 $ ls -a /sys/class/backlight/
. ..
$

This occurs when using kernel linux-image-2.6.31-14-generic (current
Karmic default) or linux-image-2.6.32-020632rc5-generic (most recent
from the kernel ppa)

Also tried xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.9.0-1ubuntu2 (current Karmic
default) and 2:2.9.0+git20091019.751e0a3e-0ubuntu0tormod2 (from xorg-
edgers ppa).

Using 'nomodeset' when booting either kernel drops me into a terminal
login that flickers unendingly.

It's been mentioned a couple times this was fixed through a kernel patch
but I'm unsure if it's made it into linux-
image-2.6.32-020632rc5-generic. Is there anything else I can do to try
and help pin down this bug?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 456902] Re: Karmic stops responding a few minutes after log in

2009-10-22 Thread Adam J. Lincoln
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xorg

After a do-release-upgrade -d from jaunty to karmic beta, I am getting
  "lock ups".

If I don't log in and just leave gdm idling, the machine doesn't freeze.
If I switch to a virtual console and use that, no freeze. I can ssh in
just fine and do all kinds of stuff with no lock ups. But once I log in
- via gdm, I can go about 5-10 minutes until the machine:

- 1) stops responding to all mouse/keyboard input
+ 1) stops responding to all mouse/keyboard input EDIT 2 Oct
2009: In all freezes, the keyboard stops responding and mouse clicks do
nothing. Recent freezes have left the mouse pointer movable, but some of the
first freezes I saw left the mouse pointer immovable.
  2) CapsLock will not toggle
- 3) sshing in doesn't work anymore
+ 3) sshing in doesn't work anymore EDIT 2 Oct 2009: This may
not be the case. The freezes occurring over the last couple of days have left
ssh still operating.
  4) alt+sysrq+reisub will cause a reboot, and the screen usually blanks after
the 'i' is put in to send SIGKILL to all processes.

I have the 82845G graphics chipset, and i915 is shown in the output of
lsmod. As the problem only occurs when I'm in X, and as it doesn't
matter whether I'm in GNOME or a failsafe xterm session, I suspect the
  graphics driver.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 458230] [NEW] Xorg freezes computer

2009-10-22 Thread Oded Arbel
Public bug reported:

X randomly freezes, and the computer has to be restarted. When that
happens the keyboard does not response (NUM lock does not change the NUM
lock led even), but I can still log in remotely to the server over SSH.

2009-10-22 Thread Stuart P. Bentley
Unfortunately, no. As stated, this was on the LiveCD, and I can't have a go
at reproducing it since the computer that caused the error is now out for
repairs.
