[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 454366] [NEW] libnotify notifications appear as weird tartan patterns
You have been subscribed to a public bug: before upgrading to 9.10, pidgin would show received messages in a libnotify popup. Now, instead of showing received messages, it pops up a random tartan pattern instead. Running "notify-send hello" in a terminal produces the same effect. No text is visible, just a pattern of horizontal and vertical lines of apparently random colours. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 458625] [NEW] restrictive & unalterable resolutions & low refresh rates
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg This is an addendum to "restrictive & unalterable resolutions & low refresh rates" Bug # 450055 - Many of us would like the developers & maintainers to give more attention to this bug. Resolution, refresh rate & speed of the video / graphics of a PC is of the utmost importance! I have installed the x-updates from 10/17/09 (1ubuntu2~xup~3) fro Intel, also mesa-drivers. Speed is ok for me, except for watching onl movies. Resolutions & refresh rates have not improved. The black frames around windows have returned, I could live with that, but screen flicker at 75 Hz is painful to my eyes, & tiresome as well. I do not know how to get the attention of Bryce Harrington, I have e-mailed him, but I am not aware of proper protocol to follow with the Ubuntu community. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 444123] Re: karmic beta live cd no display output (no X, no tty)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 60448] Re: .xsession_errors file grows out of control & saturates disk space
Here's a suggestion (keeping in mind that I'm not a developer, programmer or anything alike - I'm just an "advanced user"): What about a cron job that would run a script a regular interval (let's say each hour), and delete any oldest content of the .xsession-errors file that exceeds any reasonable amount of files pace (out of nowhere, I would say 10MB - that's already a pretty heavy log!). Again, my reasoning is that I prefer to have a functional and healthy system with a partial error-log file than a complete error-log file that I won't be able to access because it has rendered the system unusable... Of course, there may some more elegant solution... [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 374780] Re: [RV250] thinkpad t40 with ati radeon rv 250 (M 9000) freezes
I just did a full update of my karmic installation on my Thinkpad T41. Turning on compiz *still* causes screen corruption, with full system lockup soon after. I also just tried booting from the karmic release candidate live cd (off of USB), which still defaults to having compiz turned on. Again, I get screen corruption, followed by a full system lockup soon after. This is embarrassing. We're 7 days aways from the final release, and this is still happening. Compiz needs to default to off until this is fixed. Affected systems are probably any with the low-end Radeon RV250 chipset (== Mobility 9000) or less. It would probably be safest to include systems with Mobility 9200 chipsets as well. This needs to happen now! There's no need for compiz on these systems anyway - graphics are wonderfully fast with it turned off - finally on the order of Windows XP fast. We can turn an absolutely critical bug into a great enhancement for these older laptops. What does it take to get this done? ** Changed in: xserver-xorg-video-ati (Ubuntu) Assignee: (unassigned) => Bryce Harrington (bryceharrington) -- [RV250] thinkpad t40 with ati radeon rv 250 (M 9000) freezes https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/374780 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-ati in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 458571] [NEW] Fullscreen scaling mode by default on intel GMA with KMS
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg When I use KMS on my notebook with 16:10 LVDS, Xorg defaults to fullscreen scaling mode. That causes incorrect aspect ratio for non- native 4:3 modes (they are scaled to 16:10). After running `xrandr --output LVDS1 --set "scaling mode" Aspect` is works as without KMS. E.g. 4:3 modes are displayed with black bar on sides. This default setting is especially annoying when running fullscreen games and is hard to solve for unexperienced users. Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 443318] Re: Konsole LAG/Freezes when Typing - Kubuntu Karmic
Great, but... is that for sure? Is amazing how nice all works here in OpenSUSE 11.2... and I don't want to change of OS really, always used Debian based distro, but so far I don't have choice... How this get fixed before final release. And btw, I don't think is related to Konsole at all. Cause the freezes that the OS have (when this happen I can't even restart, logout or switch to console with Ctrl+Alt+Fx), the small freezes when typing on a konsole/yakuake/terminal/whatever/... So, i have my doubs... but likely nobody is helping to debug (yeah, I repeat it again...) is hard to be sure of what I causing the problems in this notebook model (to be exactly, mine is Acer Aspire 5520-5281). [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 374780] Re: [RV250] thinkpad t40 with ati radeon rv 250 (M 9000) freezes
I tested the 9.10 (Karmic) Release Candidate as a Live CD on my ThinkPad T42 (which was running Ubuntu 8.10 with no problems). The desktop startup noise plays, and the panels appear with no icons. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 413296] Re: Nvidia binary driver won't build with 2.6.31-rt kernel
@Trulan, how was NViDIA installed before hand? The first time you tried and failed was probably because you had residual pieces of a previous NViDIA installation still present (ie: from manual installation from the nv site), and so it was more likely an X11 failure rather than a driver failure. As your keyboard was still responsive, that further rules out an issue with the driver. (The real issue here is that after the change from init_MUTEX to semaphore_init, the system goes into a deadlock, and only a REISUB or Hard shutdown will get you out of it). There seem to be a number of people, including Macbook users, reporting that their backlight is non-functional in Karmic. This bug seems the most relevant and most comments seemed to point to this one as well. I'm using a Macbook 2,1 and don't have a usable backlight, leaving me stuck at max brightness (AAAH, my poor eyes!). The backlight existed and worked with Hardy, Intrepid, and Jaunty (with a couple issues that aren't relevant here). $ xbacklight No outputs have backlight property $ ls -a /sys/class/backlight/ . .. $ This occurs when using kernel linux-image-2.6.31-14-generic (current Karmic default) or linux-image-2.6.32-020632rc5-generic (most recent from the kernel ppa) Also tried xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.9.0-1ubuntu2 (current Karmic default) and 2:2.9.0+git20091019.751e0a3e-0ubuntu0tormod2 (from xorg- edgers ppa). Using 'nomodeset' when booting either kernel drops me into a terminal login that flickers unendingly. It's been mentioned a couple times this was fixed through a kernel patch but I'm unsure if it's made it into linux- image-2.6.32-020632rc5-generic. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 456902] Re: Karmic stops responding a few minutes after log in
** Description changed: Binary package hint: xorg After a do-release-upgrade -d from jaunty to karmic beta, I am getting "lock ups". If I don't log in and just leave gdm idling, the machine doesn't freeze. If I switch to a virtual console and use that, no freeze. I can ssh in just fine and do all kinds of stuff with no lock ups. But once I log in - via gdm, I can go about 5-10 minutes until the machine: + via gdm, I can go about 5-10 minutes EDIT 22 Oct 2009: + anywhere from a few minutes to 12 hours or so until the machine: - 1) stops responding to all mouse/keyboard input + 1) stops responding to all mouse/keyboard input EDIT 2 Oct 2009: In all freezes, the keyboard stops responding and mouse clicks do nothing. Recent freezes have left the mouse pointer movable, but some of the first freezes I saw left the mouse pointer immovable. 2) CapsLock will not toggle - 3) sshing in doesn't work anymore + 3) sshing in doesn't work anymore EDIT 2 Oct 2009: This may not be the case. The freezes occurring over the last couple of days have left ssh still operating. 4) alt+sysrq+reisub will cause a reboot, and the screen usually blanks after the 'i' is put in to send SIGKILL to all processes. I have the 82845G graphics chipset, and i915 is shown in the output of lsmod.
