2009-10-25 Thread Brendan_P
I found 8.10 to have a stable ati enviroment. Been a slippery downhill slope
from their for ati users

Hey guys. I'm going to be just a little bit off topic, but it seems that
this is the only place where this critical issue is being debated. I'm
disappointed not to find any reviews (along with suggestions) of this
issue on any tech site.

I've discovered Ubuntu right when Jaunty came out, and to my (un)luck, i
have a Toshiba laptop with an ATI Mobility Radeon 2600 HD. So i have the
same problems as you guys. I applied the backfill patch, but soon got
fed up with the still-sluggish environment, and the difficulty in doing
routine tasks that require more than just a bit of video power (tabs,
IDEs, videos etc) , that on Windows were not a problem.

So i decided to put Ubuntu for a nap until it was properly fixed. I had
it as a second booter, but mainly used Windows and reguraly checked for
updates on this issue..

Now, after a very nightmareish night of trying to install Visual Studio,
that ended up tearing down the whole syhen stem (i'm not a beginner but
this is ridiculous), i've decided to leave leave windows behind and make
the best out of a linuxbased OS.

The problem is, i really really wish this issue would go away. I know i
can simply disable desktop effects, but that doesn't mean that i have
full videocad support, and the system will still lag when i need it the
most. That's why i invested in a better laptop after all.

So what should i do? Is this problem persistent throughout other linux
distros? Is Debian or Fedora or another one free of this bug? Or can i
successfully go back prior to Jaunty, to an older version, and not have
problems with all the new apps? (i'm scared by the thought of constantly
having dozens of New Updates that i'm not allowed to touch)

I need alternatives, and i apologise if it's off topic, but i really did
not find what i was looking for anywhere else.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 460297] [NEW] [i855GM] Xorg freeze during installation and live CD

2009-10-25 Thread manuel kefalonia
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

Can't install or run live CD of Ubuntu Karmic RC.
During installation X freezes at 2nd or 3rd step.
During live CD session system hangs after few seconds/minutes, after I have
clicked on something.
I managed to disable desktop effects and it still freezes.
I assume it's X crashing because it's almost identical (possibly duplicate) to
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/447892.
However I can't even install the system from Desktop CD.
Other similar bugs: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/451910
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/456902

lspci -nn | grep VGA
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation 82852/855GM
Integrated Graphics Device [8086:3582] (rev 02)

Can't attach Xorg log because I don't have Karmic installed (or at least
I don't know of a way). Jaunty would crash frequently too, even after
workarounds from forum (newer kernel, Xorg swat/edgers etc.). It didn't
crash so quickly though, anyway still using Hardy.

Mouse pointer still working after freeze, keyboard locked (no Alt+F1 or
CapsLock), SysReq+Alt+K closes X but can't restart it. All I can do is
restart my Asus laptop with SysReq+Alt+REISUB.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 460315] [NEW] [i915][Karmic-RC] gdm crashes in a loop after fresh install

2009-10-25 Thread Elephantman
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

Just installed Karmic from RC desktop CD.
Install goes fine, the live CD boots and X works with no issues in the install
process. Once the install is finished, we go for first reboot.
All seems normal until GDM tries to load. At this point in time, I get the
mouse cursor and sometimes de loading icon, and the screen looses signal and
the same thing starts over again in an infinie loop. At a guess, I'd say xorg
crashes when launched by GDM.
Immediate consequence is that I can not finish the install of Karmic on this
machine (that's using ubuntu since years) so it's critical.

If I trigger it just before gdm tries to load, I can get into a terminal. I've
tried successfully to run 'startx', there Gnome loads up. All attempts to
restart GDM result into the same infinite loop.
Since the i915 module doesn't seem to be correctly loaded, I tried Insmod like
this : insmod -f
/lib/modules/2.6.31-14-generic/kernel/drivers/gpu/drm/i915/i915.ko. Returns

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 413168] Re: Karmic upgrade not shutting off backlight after time

2009-10-25 Thread Alex Murray
@Milos - the patched version of xorg-server in my PPA has been
superseded by the official Ubuntu package, so there is no need to use my
PPA (hence why it doesn't offer any upgrade because the version in the
official PPA is newer). For me this issue is fixed by the official
package in the Ubuntu repo.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 400934] Re: [i945] (UXA) Intel Corporation 82945G/GZ Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:2772] (rev 02)

2009-10-25 Thread Pablo Almeida
No, that's not the same issue here. Running from the live CD, it freezes right
after desktop shows, even before I can move the mouse. I tried to upgrade from
Karmic Alpha 6 (in which I can use it for minutes till it freezes), with
effects disabled, and then enable them, but it really always takes less than 30
seconds to freeze.
But, even with effects disabled, Blender still crashes Ubuntu, just like it did
on Jaunty.

Adding this to my xorg.conf, solved my problem:

But now with the last NVIDIA and Ubuntu updates, i removed this section,
and system still runs fine.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 460322] [NEW] [Karmic] Slow window resizing under KDE

2009-10-25 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

The reaction to window resizing using the KDE desktop is very slow in
Karmic (October 25, 2009; all updates installed). Moving the mouse
cursor to the borders of a resizable window, the resizing cursor almost
immediately appears. But actually resizing the window (i.e. clicking on
the border and moving the mouse) happens with a delay of 3 to 4 seconds.
There is no timing problem for opening, closing or moving windows.

Window resizing also works fine when using GNOME instead of KDE.

your comments. Now, when I upgrade to Karmic, I will know what to expect. I
am just another user, not a developer.

I share your frustration, and I very much appreciate knowing what's
happening with other users in the same situation.

IS ANYBODY READING THIS THREAD ??

I am wholehearted by ubuntu and Karmic is perfect but I can't understand,
that so much effort of the community is sent to hell just because of such
 stupid bug.
This is probably the most important reason, why Microsoft is still
 winning so much.

Solution:

sudo rm /usr/lib/xorg/modules/libglx.so sudo cp
/usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so /usr/lib/xorg/modules/

The problem was, that libglx.so in /modules directory was a symbolic
link to old 180.44 glx library but this in /modules/extensions was
correct.

Grungekid, I'm sure you can get some help at http://ubuntuforums.org.
At bugs.launchpad.net we focus on improving ubuntu by getting rid of
bugs, and this particular bug report is completely unrelated to your
problem.

That being said, you seem to have a valid bug and we would appreciate
if you would report it. However at this time, we need to know that
this is still a problem in the latest development version. If you
install the release candidate now (or the final version soon), you can
report the problem to the package xserver-xorg-video-ati. See
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bugs?field.tag=no-screens for a few bug
reports for similar problems. Make sure you attach the files
/var/log/Xorg.0.log, /etc/X11/xorg.conf (if it exists), and the
output of the two commands `lspci -vvnn` and `dmesg`.

If you want to read more two good starting points are:

I also share this frustration. Perhaps someone from ATI can give some

from our vendor lists.

I am going to try to point this out to the folks at Theinquirer and Theregister

can increase the interest level at ATI.

About the performance issue :
I founded this comment :

It explains why it's slow with KMS on my computer (video : Intel 845G). KMS is
incompatible with XVideo on this GPU (but KMS works normally with XVideo with
Intel GMA945 on my laptop). I create bug #460399 about this issue.

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 305301] Re: [RC410] Xpress 200M hangs when resuming from suspend with DRI

2009-10-25 Thread subchee
I've made some tests, here are the results:

test#1) I've booted up my most current Karmic with default options (ro
splash in grub.conf) and then I switched to tty1 and stopped the gdm with
sudo stop gdm command. After that I ran sudo pm-suspend command. My
notebook went to spleep, but it couldn't wake up at all. Just a blank screen
appeared and I couldn't switch to another tty. The LED of the caps lock key
was blinking.

test#2) I've booted up the same system with ro text options in the
grub.conf. I didn't do anything special, just took a look at the output of
the lsmod | grep ati command. I realised, that ati_agp is loaded. After
that, I ran the sudo pm-suspend command. The notebook went to sleep, and
surprising, it was waken up successfully when I pressed the power key. :-)

After it waked up, I started the Gnome with startx. When the Gnome was
started, I switched to tty1 and stopped it with sudo stop gdm command. I
ran sudo pm-suspend and my computer went to sleep. But after that, it
couldn't wake up, I had only a black screen and a blinking caps lock led,
such as in test#1. :-(

I hope this informations could help to fix this bug.

Best regards,
 Szabolcs

2009/10/23 Mark umberst...@googlemail.com

I've been having this problem too, on my Amilo LI1718 (Intel chipset
 variant of the X200M).

Just clean installed the Ubuntu RC and it took 7 attempts for xsplash to
kick in (requiring a powering off and on of the laptop every time), and
 suspend/resume still doesn't work.

 Joy...

I've explicitly installed X.Org X server -- Nouveau display driver

Now only the screen resolutions 1024 x 768 and 800 x 600. Before I
had used the default driver (X.Org X server -- NV display driver), which
had identified the correct screen resolutions. See bug ID: Bug #437437

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 460539] [NEW] black screen in ubuntu 9.10 rc

2009-10-25 Thread Samuel1988
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

I've been followed developments in the Ubuntu 9.10 versions of its Alpha
and Alpha 6 from the screen has become black and some slowness on the
part of the effects of compiz, but this is only in this way, when compiz
is on. Something similar happened when I decided to upgrade the drives
on my Radeon 9250 ati in ubuntu 9.04 from this site https: / /
launchpad.net / ~ xorg-edgers and also screen went black and the sign of
slow in compiz effects.

2009-10-25 Thread Franz Apeltauer
The above log is from 8.04, because I do not have a usable kubuntu 9.10
yet. Maybe the debug output still helps, even though the error does not
occur there. I will add the 9.10 X.log as soon as possible.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 444123] Re: karmic beta live cd no display output (no X, no tty)

2009-10-25 Thread SqUe
Hi I am affected from the same bug. Tested with an earlier alpha version
and the current karmic RC with 32bit and 64bit. After the boot menu ,
the ubuntu logo flashes and it disappears showing a cursor blinking, no
feedback no nothing. In jaunty it works perfectly.

CPU: Phenom II x3 720be
M/B: M4A79 deluxe
GPU: ATI 3850 512MB

The only similarity that I can find is the AMD platform.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 41301] Re: Mouse clicks stop working sporadically

2009-10-25 Thread JMM
I have similar equipment to Mike C and the same bug.
Sony Vaio SZ240P
Linux jordan-vaio 2.6.28-16-generic #55-Ubuntu SMP Tue Oct 20 19:48:24 UTC 2009
i686 GNU/Linux

I have been using Ubuntu since 5.04, and have only seen this bug with
9.04. Oddly I did not see it for a while after installing 9.04, but
rather it only starting in the last month or so. Too bad I didn't keep
track of which kernel.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 460580] [NEW] package nvidia-glx-96 96.43.13-0ubuntu5 failed to install/upgrade:

2009-10-25 Thread kirun
Public bug reported:

nvidia-graphics-drivers-96
nvidia-graphics-drivers-96-dev

ended up both installed after upgrade. Possibly because I ran:

sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

before the

update-notifier-kde -d

and before a reboot.

sudo apt-get remove nvidia-glx-96-dev

seems to have given me a booting system.
