[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 351222] Re: KDM cannot be started with the nvidia driver
Thanks Bruce for your feedback! I will open a new bug Tomorrow. Today I spent some time testing what could be the source of the problem, so I decided to install gdm to check if this issue also appears, or not, using gdm. After testing that, what I can say is that it seems that there is something wrong in kdm while interacting with X and nvidia drivers (maybe only in 64 bits?) because this is not happening at all in gdm (gdm works like a charm in my kubuntu karmic 64 bits with nvidia 185 driver). As a kde user, and fan ;), I would rather prefer to use kdm than gdm, which requires to install a lot of gnome packages that otherwise I wouldn't need, but I am afraid that I will have to use gdm for a while until this bug is fixed. As I said before I will open a bug to see if this problem can be fixed as soon as possible, but using gdm can be a good temporal workaround. -- KDM cannot be started with the nvidia driver https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/351222 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to nvidia-graphics-drivers-180 in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 379228] Re: screen starts flashing and freezes or crashes X
Ubuntu Version: 9.10 Architecture: 64-bit Graphics Card: GeForce 8600 GT Driver Version: 185.18.36 I first noticed this bug after installing Ubuntu 9.10. Upon booting for the first time Ubuntu recommended that I install the NVIDIA graphics driver in order to take full advantage of my graphics card. I have a similar experience with this bug and I shall provide you a list of steps that you can take to reproduce it. What I expected: When I release the mouse under a black notification box, the window should remain transparent until I move the mouse away. Then the system should continue to function normally. What happened: Well, I was dragging an application window around my desktop and I happened to release it while the mouse was under one of the black notification windows and my screen began to flash violently and eventually my system locked up completely forcing me to do a hard reboot. Steps to reproduce: 1. System -> Administration -> Hardware Drivers 2. Install/Activate NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (version 185) 3. Reboot 4. System -> Preferences -> Appearance 5. Go to the Visual Effects tab and click Extra 6. Close the Appearance window 7. Open an application or folder of your choice. It doesn't matter what it is, the point is that you need a window which can be dragged 8. Do something that causes a notification window to appear. I had my buddy IM me. 9. When the notification window pops up grab a window and drag it until the mouse "hand icon" is under the notification window. The notification window should become transparent at this point. 10. Release the window 11. Close your eyes if you have a seizure disorder (not joking) I would provide you with log files, but none of them seem to have anything useful. If you would like them anyway please let me know and I will provide them. Temporary Fix: Disabling desktop effects altogether eliminates this problem since there is no way to make a notification window turn transparent. -- screen starts flashing and freezes or crashes X https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/379228 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to nvidia-graphics-drivers-180 in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 438346] Re: [i915gm] [jaunty, karmic] X freezes every day or so
These symptoms seem to describe the problem I'm seeing with a recent upgrade from 8.10 to 9.04, and then to 9.10 on my Toshiba Tecra A3. The Jaunty freezing was worse so I moved almost immediately to Karmic. Freezing seems random, though at least once a day. It can occur when clicking, or even just moving the mouse. Sometimes the cursor remains responsive to movement but not clicking. Network access is available so I've just tried restarting gdm with the debug=batch command. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 476157] [NEW] LOOSING CONTROL OF EXTERNAL MONITOR. IMPOSSIBLE TO MIRROR SCREENS.
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg This problems happens in Laptop Panasonic CF-R8 with Ubuntu 9.10 amd 64. If I start the computer with no secondary monitor connected. After logging in I connect the external monitor. Then I use the keyboard to switch screens (fn+f3). Then, my external monitor shows a nice orange color. The screen of the laptop shows different icons (for example the ones for help or Network manager become suddenly different). May be I saw those icons before when running a safe mode? And I loose control of the screens completly. The keyboard combination (fn+f3) has no effect and it is impossible to switch screens. If I open the "Display" and try to mirror screens or try to switch off the monitor of the laptop, there is no no response. I use this computer for presentations in meetings, so this is a very important issue for me. I really need to be able to connect an external monitor and mirror screens. But If I restart the computer with the monitor connected, everything works fine. But I cannot see the contents of the Desktop folder in the screen. This is a secondary problem, not so important. I did not have this problem with Ubuntu 9.04 i384, and I keep it installed for security reasons in my computer, so I use when I have to do a presentation. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 385445] Re: [i915GM/GMS/910GML and GM965/GL960] Monitor does not turn back on and computer hangs when laptop lid is closed
Just to note, KMS is awesome aside from this issue. Got rid of a lot of the flickering I had in Jaunty. Now that I disabled KMS, the flickering is back. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 385445] Re: [i915GM/GMS/910GML and GM965/GL960] Monitor does not turn back on and computer hangs when laptop lid is closed
I have a Dell Inspiron 630m laptop. lspci -nn | grep VGA 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation Mobile 915GM/GMS/910GML Express Graphics Controller [8086:2592] (rev 03) I had a similar issue after upgrading to Karmic. When I closed the lid (set to blank screen), and then reopened, the screen would remain black. Only way to recover would be to reboot or suspend and resume. I have tried a few different solutions (setting close lid event to nothing, and a few others that I can't remember). I found that disabling KMS fixed the issue. (From GRUB at boot, press e, edit the kernel line and add "nomodeset" at the end - minus the quotes - after the ro quiet splash part). If that works, and you want to add it permanently, sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst , find your kernel, and add nomodeset to the kernel line at the end. Hmmm yes I don't understand why the build failed in the other bug, since it succeeded in my case too, and for the 2.6.28 kernel. However, if 2.6.31 does become the default kernel when installed, then the infamous gdm-respawn-flickering-problem should invariably show up; in my case gdm started fine and the graphics were up - it is powermizer which plagued me. I did not check which kernel I was booted in though, since the system skips the menu on reboot. But if I were in 2.6.28, that would imply 2.6.31 was not set as the default kernel - also strange! -- nvidia drivers 185.xx compile into kernel 2.6.28 instead of 2.6.31 on update from jaunty to karmic https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/474917 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to nvidia-graphics-drivers-180 in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

Yeah, I know... In my case, I had luck to have time to disable desktop effects before it locks my machine again... I have an usable computer, but without the effects. Yup; seems to me to be exactly the case as in bug #438398 :) Indeed I believe the nvidia build does not fail even when against the older kernel, but the fact that it would be built against the older kernel before the new linux-headers thereby requiring the older one to remain in place is the irritant.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 447403] Re: Tapping upper right corner no longer produces middle click in Karmic
I agree with Narj. This default behaviour hurts my productivity, too. And I felt very unconfortable using my touchpad until I found the above solution... Which is not quite an obvious way to do it, for most people. And I must say I am quite bored with this new tendency in Ubuntu of considering the average user an idiot. First they disabled ctrl-alt- backspace combo by default, now they disabled the scroll-to-change- workspace feautre, along with this one. What's next? Seems like that, instead of teaching new users, somebody here is trying to conform GNU/Linux to their ignorance. Make the defaults you want, all right, but at least give us a more handy way to change it back the way we used to like it. -- Tapping upper right corner no longer produces middle click in Karmic https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/447403 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-input-synaptics in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 474917] Re: nvidia drivers 185.xx compile into kernel 2.6.28 instead of 2.6.31 on update from jaunty to karmic
manjul, ok thanks for getting back to us. We can focus this bug report on Daniel's version of the issue. Daniel, looking at your make.log it seems to be working successfully and it mentions it's building against 2.6.31, so it doesn't quite indicate where things failed... Was that make.log what was there before, or was that from after when you ran dpkg-reconfigure? It is starting to sound like perhaps there is a race condition. I.e., at time of install while you're upgrading to 2.6.31, the 2.6.28 kernel is installed so DKMS builds against that. You reboot into 2.6.31 and X can't find an nvidia.ko for this version of the kernel. So, I think this might be a dupe of bug #438398. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 472406] Re: xorg consumes up to 25% of CPU after upgrading to Ubuntu 9.10
SLVEDDD Albert, thank you very much! The nightmare terminated, although the solution has been not so immediate!!! I've been trying to upgrade to kernel 2.6.31 as you suggested but after installing through Synaptic and rebooting, my surprise to find out that the new kernel did not appear into the Grub2 menu list !!! Also, after installing the new kernel for the first time, I realised that neither Synaptic marked that kernel as "installed". Actually no kernel was marked as "installed". Actually, as far as I can remember, a couple of days ago Synaptic notified about that 2.6.31 kernel upgrade: I ran the upgrade but, AFAICS, it didn't installed it. So, getting back to the point, after installing the 2.6.31 once more I decided to run 'sudo update-grub' which retrieved the new kernel but actually did not updated /boot/grub/grub.cfg So I've been trying to "manually" add the 2.6.31 line into the grub2 menu. My first try was 'sudo gedit /boot/grub/grub.cfg' but it didn't saved my changes because of "read only file system" !??!?!?! I also tried to open gedit as super user (I run the 'su' command first) but still no way to save changes for the same reasons. So my last try was to modify grub.cfg using 'pico' from command line: sudo pico /boot/grub/grub.cfg and I did was able to save the f*ck|ng changes!!! In detail I added the lines related to 2.3.31 just copying the lines related to the old kernel and modifying a very little bit accordingly :) My grub.cfg is attached to the present post. Hope it helps Ride and all the others experiencing this problem too. I am also having this issue. ATI 4850HD 64 bit ubuntu. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 474917] Re: nvidia drivers 185.xx compile into kernel 2.6.28 instead of 2.6.31 on update from jaunty to karmic
Apologies for the delayed reply - I have been tied up all day; also for the multiple issue report (I was not aware of the 180/185 nomenclature issue). The trouble is that after the powermizer havoc I was unable to work on my system, and I could not afford that at the time, so I had reformatted it with jaunty. Hence no log saved (bummer!). The driver indeed did fail to build against the kernel; the install had happened properly since the graphics were up. The only thing I can appeal is that this bug should be easily reproduced upon an upgrade; I dare not try it at the moment because I would not have the time to deal with the issues at the moment. I hope the log from Dan Quinlan above is useful.
