Sorry, perhaps I've filed this in the wrong place. My card works well in
both Jaunty and Karmic. kdetv worked on Jaunty, but no longer works in
Karmic. tvtime works in Karmic, so I know that it's not a problem with
the card itself.

I just did a fresh install and everytime that I would open a "program"

driver, no luck. I just now tried your (Marcelo) idea of disabling
visual effects, and it has seemed to work so farI can open programs
now..hopefully they get a fix for this.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 351222] Re: KDM cannot be started with the nvidia driver

2009-11-05 Thread Salva
Thanks Bruce for your feedback! I will open a new bug Tomorrow. Today I spent
some time testing what could be the source of the problem, so I decided to
install gdm to check if this issue also appears, or not, using gdm.
After testing that, what I can say is that it seems that there is something
wrong in kdm while interacting with X and nvidia drivers (maybe only in 64
bits?) because this is not happening at all in gdm (gdm works like a charm in
my kubuntu karmic 64 bits with nvidia 185 driver).
As a kde user, and fan ;), I would rather prefer to use kdm than gdm, which
requires to install a lot of gnome packages that otherwise I wouldn't need, but
I am afraid that I will have to use gdm for a while until this bug is fixed. As
I said before I will open a bug to see if this problem can be fixed as soon as
possible, but using gdm can be a good temporal workaround.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 379228] Re: screen starts flashing and freezes or crashes X

2009-11-05 Thread James D. Hasselman
Ubuntu Version: 9.10
Architecture: 64-bit
Graphics Card: GeForce 8600 GT
Driver Version: 185.18.36

I first noticed this bug after installing Ubuntu 9.10. Upon booting for
the first time Ubuntu recommended that I install the NVIDIA graphics
driver in order to take full advantage of my graphics card. I have a
similar experience with this bug and I shall provide you a list of steps
that you can take to reproduce it.

What I expected:
When I release the mouse under a black notification box, the window should
remain transparent until I move the mouse away. Then the system should
continue to function normally.

What happened:
Well, I was dragging an application window around my desktop and I happened to
release it while the mouse was under one of the black notification windows and
my screen began to flash violently and eventually my system locked up
completely forcing me to do a hard reboot.

Steps to reproduce:
1.  System -> Administration -> Hardware Drivers
2. Install/Activate NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (version 185)
3. Reboot
4.  System -> Preferences -> Appearance
5. Go to the Visual Effects tab and click Extra
6. Close the Appearance window
7. Open an application or folder of your choice. It doesn't matter what it
is, the point is that you need a window which can be dragged
8. Do something that causes a notification window to appear. I had my buddy
IM me.
9. When the notification window pops up grab a window and drag it until the
mouse "hand icon" is under the notification window. The notification window
should become transparent at this point.
10. Release the window
11. Close your eyes if you have a seizure disorder (not joking)

I would provide you with log files, but none of them seem to have
anything useful. If you would like them anyway please let me know and I
will provide them.

Temporary Fix:
Disabling desktop effects altogether eliminates this problem since there is no
way to make a notification window turn transparent.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 438346] Re: [i915gm] [jaunty, karmic] X freezes every day or so

2009-11-05 Thread Kirk Bridger
These symptoms seem to describe the problem I'm seeing with a recent
upgrade from 8.10 to 9.04, and then to 9.10 on my Toshiba Tecra A3. The
Jaunty freezing was worse so I moved almost immediately to Karmic.
Freezing seems random, though at least once a day. It can occur when
clicking, or even just moving the mouse. Sometimes the cursor remains
responsive to movement but not clicking. Network access is available so
I've just tried restarting gdm with the debug=batch command. Will dump
the next time I see a freeze as per
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/Freeze

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 476157] [NEW] LOOSING CONTROL OF EXTERNAL MONITOR. IMPOSSIBLE TO MIRROR SCREENS.

2009-11-05 Thread Eduard Carcole
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

This problems happens in Laptop Panasonic CF-R8 with Ubuntu 9.10 amd 64.

If I start the computer with no secondary monitor connected.
After logging in I connect the external monitor.

Then I use the keyboard to switch screens (fn+f3).

Then, my external monitor shows a nice orange color.
The screen of the laptop shows different icons (for example the ones for help
or Network manager become suddenly different). May be I saw those icons before
when running a safe mode?

And I loose control of the screens completly.

The keyboard combination (fn+f3) has no effect and it is impossible to
switch screens.

If I open the "Display" and try to mirror screens or try to switch off
the monitor of the laptop, there is no no response.

I use this computer for presentations in meetings, so this is a very important
issue for me.
I really need to be able to connect an external monitor and mirror screens.

But

If I restart the computer with the monitor connected, everything works fine.
But I cannot see the contents of the Desktop folder in the screen.
This is a secondary problem, not so important.

I did not have this problem with Ubuntu 9.04 i384, and I keep it
installed for security reasons in my computer, so I use when I have to
do a presentation.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 385445] Re: [i915GM/GMS/910GML and GM965/GL960] Monitor does not turn back on and computer hangs when laptop lid is closed

2009-11-05 Thread brott
Just to note, KMS is awesome aside from this issue. Got rid of a lot of
the flickering I had in Jaunty. Now that I disabled KMS, the flickering
is back. I tried it with the x-edgers repo updates to my video drivers,
but still no dice (rolled back after). I have not tried the 2.6.32 RC6
kernel but was tempted.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 385445] Re: [i915GM/GMS/910GML and GM965/GL960] Monitor does not turn back on and computer hangs when laptop lid is closed

2009-11-05 Thread brott
I have a Dell Inspiron 630m laptop. lspci -nn | grep VGA
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation Mobile
915GM/GMS/910GML Express Graphics Controller [8086:2592] (rev 03)

I had a similar issue after upgrading to Karmic. When I closed the lid
(set to blank screen), and then reopened, the screen would remain black.
Only way to recover would be to reboot or suspend and resume. I have
tried a few different solutions (setting close lid event to nothing, and
a few others that I can't remember).

I found that disabling KMS fixed the issue. (From GRUB at boot, press
e, edit the kernel line and add "nomodeset" at the end - minus the
quotes - after the ro quiet splash part). If that works, and you want
to add it permanently, sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst , find your
kernel, and add nomodeset to the kernel line at the end.

Can anyone else with this issue try this and confirm/deny?

2009-11-05 Thread Christopher Tozzi
As a workaround, I've discovered that switching to EXA acceleration
seems to work. To do that, open the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf and make
sure you have a section that looks like:

Section "Device"
Identifier "Configured Video Device"
Option "AccelMethod" "exa"
EndSection

Then restart X and you should be able to enable desktop effects without
a freeze.

Unfortunately, UXA acceleration continues not to work. If there's any
information I can provide to figure this out, please let me know.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 474917] Re: nvidia drivers 185.xx compile into kernel 2.6.28 instead of 2.6.31 on update from jaunty to karmic

2009-11-05 Thread manzdagratiano
Hmmm yes I don't understand why the build failed in the other bug, since
it succeeded in my case too, and for the 2.6.28 kernel. However, if
2.6.31 does become the default kernel when installed, then the infamous
gdm-respawn-flickering-problem should invariably show up; in my case gdm
started fine and the graphics were up - it is powermizer which plagued
me. I did not check which kernel I was booted in though, since the
system skips the menu on reboot. But if I were in 2.6.28, that would
imply 2.6.31 was not set as the default kernel - also strange!

2009-11-05 Thread Marcelo Lotif
Yeah, I know... In my case, I had luck to have time to disable desktop effects
before it locks my machine again...
I have an usable computer, but without the effects. As soon as I enable them,
it's a matter of seconds to get the system frozen.

Well, I don't have the knowledge to say that these are the same or not,
but I think they are somewhat related.

it was after the dpkg-reconfigure. looking at the output of
dkpkg-reconfigure it looks like it cleaned up whatever was there
previously. ie. there isn't a directory for the previous kernel

yup, that's sounds right

no, because in that bug the build failed. in my case the build
succeeded but for the 2.6.28 kernel.

if I'd booted into 2.6.28 things would've been fine. but when 2.6.31
installed it became the default kernel.

is there a way for a new kernel install to trigger a rebuild or a
reconfigure of another package?

2009-11-05 Thread manzdagratiano
Yup; seems to me to be exactly the case as in bug #438398 :) Indeed I
believe the nvidia build does not fail even when against the older
kernel, but the fact that it would be built against the older kernel
before the new linux-headers thereby requiring the older one to remain
in place is the irritant.

I've looked through the dpkg.log and found that this was indeed the
case. Still it's kinda annoying the upgrade from jaunty to karmic
failed because of it, leaving me with an unstable and unclean system.
Got that fixed now though :-)

Thanks for your help and time.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 447403] Re: Tapping upper right corner no longer produces middle click in Karmic

2009-11-05 Thread Franko Burolo
I agree with Narj. This default behaviour hurts my productivity, too.
And I felt very unconfortable using my touchpad until I found the above
solution... Which is not quite an obvious way to do it, for most people.

And I must say I am quite bored with this new tendency in Ubuntu of
considering the average user an idiot. First they disabled ctrl-alt-
backspace combo by default, now they disabled the scroll-to-change-
workspace feautre, along with this one. What's next? Seems like that,
instead of teaching new users, somebody here is trying to conform
GNU/Linux to their ignorance.

Make the defaults you want, all right, but at least give us a more handy
way to change it back the way we used to like it.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 474917] Re: nvidia drivers 185.xx compile into kernel 2.6.28 instead of 2.6.31 on update from jaunty to karmic

2009-11-05 Thread Bryce Harrington
manjul, ok thanks for getting back to us. We can focus this bug report
on Daniel's version of the issue.

Daniel, looking at your make.log it seems to be working successfully and
it mentions it's building against 2.6.31, so it doesn't quite indicate
where things failed... Was that make.log what was there before, or was
that from after when you ran dpkg-reconfigure?

It is starting to sound like perhaps there is a race condition. I.e.,
at time of install while you're upgrading to 2.6.31, the 2.6.28 kernel
is installed so DKMS builds against that. You reboot into 2.6.31 and X
can't find an nvidia.ko for this version of the kernel.

So, I think this might be a dupe of bug #438398. Does that sound
accurate?

Hi Salva,

Yes it would be better to file a new bug. It looks like your issue is
different from the original one reported here - from your kdm.log it
seems you are having some sort of X crash. Please gather a full
backtrace - see http://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Backtracing for guidance.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 440233] Re: fglrx fails at startup because of missing amdpcsdb.default + removal leaves bad settings in Xorg.conf

2009-11-05 Thread DAP
I have solved my problem.
Deleting /etc/ati and reinstalling the ati driver did not help. although the
/etc/ati directory got created, there was nothing in it.
swapping hard disks, creating a clean install of Ubuntu, updating & installing
the hardware driver, then copying amdpcsdb and amdpcsdb.default to the /etc/ati
directory of the old hard drive, got something that would boot and work, but
with that annoying AMD testing use only bug in the lower right hand corner.

uninstalling the hardware driver, copying the entire /etc/ati from the
clean install then re-installing the hardware driver FINALLY got me a
working system.

2009-11-05 Thread The Founder
I read though those bug reports, but the problem is that this one is
differing in the fact that the machine completely locks up.

One of them below says the guy can move the mouse, the other one only
happens when he rotates the cube, our bug is a true hard core lockup
where you can't do anything.. and ours happens right on startup into
Gnome.

I honestly think this one isn't the same as those... maybe related some
how.. but it's not the same bug... I can't even get to the cube to

Hmm, that is interesting. I was waiting for the 9.10 release because KDE 4.2
wasn't there yet. KDE3 was working pretty well for me and I didn't feel KDE4
was ready for prime time until 4.3.

Once 9.10 was out the upgrader took me straight to that version with no notice
or option to go to 9.04

I guess I didn't think about the LTS releases, I was looking at the KDE
releases...

something to think about

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 472406] Re: xorg consumes up to 25% of CPU after upgrading to Ubuntu 9.10

2009-11-05 Thread manolo
SLVEDDD

Albert, thank you very much! The nightmare terminated, although the
solution has been not so immediate!!!

I've been trying to upgrade to kernel 2.6.31 as you suggested but after
installing through Synaptic and rebooting, my surprise to find out that the new
kernel did not appear into the Grub2 menu list !!!
Also, after installing the new kernel for the first time, I realised that
neither Synaptic marked that kernel as "installed". Actually no kernel was
marked as "installed". Actually, as far as I can remember, a couple of days ago
Synaptic notified about that 2.6.31 kernel upgrade: I ran the upgrade but,
AFAICS, it didn't installed it.

So, getting back to the point, after installing the 2.6.31 once more I decided
to run 'sudo update-grub' which retrieved the new kernel but actually did not
updated /boot/grub/grub.cfg
So I've been trying to "manually" add the 2.6.31 line into the grub2 menu. My
first try was 'sudo gedit /boot/grub/grub.cfg' but it didn't saved my changes
because of "read only file system" !??!?!?!
I also tried to open gedit as super user (I run the 'su' command first) but
still no way to save changes for the same reasons.

So my last try was to modify grub.cfg using 'pico' from command line:
sudo pico /boot/grub/grub.cfg

and I did was able to save the f*ck|ng changes!!! In detail I added the lines
related to 2.3.31 just copying the lines related to the old kernel and
modifying a very little bit accordingly :)
My grub.cfg is attached to the present post.

Hope it helps Ride and all the others experiencing this problem too.
Albert, thank you one more :)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 424613] Re: [i945GM] GPU lockup with intel 2:2.8.1-1ubuntu1

2009-11-05 Thread Leann Ogasawara
The patch noted in comment #3 and #4 is now upstream in linus' tree.
This patch however is not in the Karmic kernel tree.

ogasaw...@yoji:~/linux-2.6$ git show 0ef82af7253c1929a3995f271b8b0db462d1a0c3
commit 0ef82af7253c1929a3995f271b8b0db462d1a0c3
Author: Chris Wilson
Date: Sat Sep 5 18:07:06 2009 +0100

drm/i915: Pad ringbuffer with NOOPs before wrapping

According to the docs, the ringbuffer is not allowed to wrap in the middle
of an instruction.

G45 PRM, Vol 1b, p101:
While the “free space” wrap may allow commands to be wrapped around the
end of the Ring Buffer, the wrap should only occur between commands.
Padding (with NOP) may be required to follow this restriction.

Do as commanded.

[Having seen bug reports where there is evidence of split commands, but
apparently the GPU has continued on merrily before a bizarre and untimely
death, this may or may not fix a few random hangs.]

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 351222] Re: KDM cannot be started with the nvidia driver

2009-11-05 Thread Salva
I have realized that what I said before is not completely true: "It's
something weird because when I reconfigure the kernel and then reboot it
works but only for the first time, then the problem comes back again,
what I don't understand why".

Actually, either I don't understand what is going on or this is a random
error that only happens around half of the times, but reconfiguring the
kernel doesn't seem to help.

2009-11-05 Thread Bryce Harrington
Actually nevermind, the original report included the apt logs. So
looking at them one error jumps out:

Not sure whether that is a hard failure or a warning, but interesting.

2009-11-05 Thread Bryce Harrington
Hmm odd. Both of those make.log files show essentially the same output,
and both seem to indicate that nvidia.ko did in fact successfully build
both times.

I wonder if it is just a timing issue (as described in bug #438398)
where X tries to boot before DKMS has finished building the driver.
I'll check with mario. It would definitely be interesting to see your
dpkg.log.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 440233] Re: fglrx fails at startup because of missing amdpcsdb.default + removal leaves bad settings in Xorg.conf

2009-11-05 Thread DAP
I am also having this issue.
ATI 4850HD
64 bit ubuntu.

I know the root cause of my troubles: I foolishly tried to install the ATI
driver from the ATI website (version 9.10)
I tried to uninstall it and was stuck with dead keyboard and my monitor in
sleep mode.
I SSHed into my computer and re-installed the broken ATI driver, that got me
something that would at least boot.
tried uninstalling again, this got me to a boot that gave me errors, but
allowed me to boot in safe video mode.
In safe video mode, I re-installed the hardware driver via the "Hardware
Drivers" option.
This left me stuck with the "missing PCS defaults file
/etc/ati/amdpcsdb.default".
I copied the "amdpcsdb.default.dpkg-bak" file to "amdpcsdb.default", and got
something that boots, but now I am stuck with a bug in the lower right corner
of my screen that says:
"AMD
 Testing use
   only
Unsupported
   hardware"

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 472406] Re: xorg consumes up to 25% of CPU after upgrading to Ubuntu 9.10

2009-11-05 Thread Albert Damen
The xorg logs for both Manolo and Ride show you are using the old Jaunty kernel
(2.6.28) and drm is not properly working. Please make sure you boot with the
new Karmic kernel (2.6.31) and see if that solves the problem.
If the karmic kernel still has this problem, please attach xorg.0.log and dmesg
output with the Karmic kernel.

worked for them because it has a separate powermizer setting.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 475955] [NEW] Missing display resolutions sins upgrade

2009-11-05 Thread Uffeg
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: x11-xserver-utils

I did a update of my previous version to 9.10 and after that I can't
change my screen resolution to more than 800x600 dpi. I tried to switch
over to 640x480dpi but then it went black for a few seconds, after that
it went back to 800x600dpi. With the earlier version I had at least
1024x768dpi as default screen resolution

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 474917] Re: nvidia drivers 185.xx compile into kernel 2.6.28 instead of 2.6.31 on update from jaunty to karmic

2009-11-05 Thread manzdagratiano
Apologies for the delayed reply - I have been tied up all day; also for
the multiple issue report (I was not aware of the 180/185 nomenclature
issue). The trouble is that after the powermizer havoc I was unable to
work on my system, and I could not afford that at the time, so I had
reformatted it with jaunty. Hence no log saved (bummer!). The driver
indeed did fail to build against the kernel; the install had happened
properly since the graphics were up. The only thing I can appeal is that
this bug should be easily reproduced upon an upgrade; I dare not try it
at the moment because I would not have the time to deal with the issues
at the moment. I hope the log from Dan Quinlan above is useful.
