[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 475131] Re: Graphics display shuts off intermitantly
I can confirm a similar problem on a similar setup. The only difference is the screen never turns on - it just stays black. Or perhaps I'm too impatient. :) I cannot Ctrl+Alt+1 to switch to a virtual terminal and I must hard reboot. This occurs if I have no xorg.conf or if I have one using the ati or radeon drivers. And this is on the 64 bit Karmic. If I use the 32 bit live cd, however, everything seems to work fine! (Uses built-in xorg configuration, using ati and radeon drivers.) So it must be a 64 bit issue? I'll post some files, from the 32bit liveCD session and from my 64bit install. -- Graphics display shuts off intermitantly https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/475131 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is the registrant for xserver-xorg-driver-ati. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 440233] Re: fglrx fails at startup because of missing amdpcsdb.default + removal leaves bad settings in Xorg.conf
I my case, I think the true problem is related to the incompatibility of this driver with ATI RV3XX Series card, which explain the No devices detected. See : https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu-release-notes/+bug/284408 After manually installing all /etc/ati/ missing files, amdpcsdb was generate automatically after aticonfig invocation. But since the fglrx module could not be load properly just before... All these are useless. Having a driver from ATI which supports old GPU series, compiles and runs with recent kernel and xserver, is not for now... Anyway and at least, the Xorg team did a very good work with the free radeon driver. It is a little bit slower, but after having found a good balance between the driver performance and Compiz Settings, it works quite well. :) -- fglrx fails at startup because of missing amdpcsdb.default + removal leaves bad settings in Xorg.conf https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/440233 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to fglrx-installer in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

Clean installed after a patchy dist upgrade with seemingly random application crashes. Landed at the failed boot, black screen and blinking login text. jumped through various virtual terminals with ctrl+alt+F1-F6 until one stopped flashing and permitted normal operation. Then I used FTP to download the 190.42 package as described by Lapdog on this page http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1305459page=3 though I did add in a step sudo service gdm stop before running the package in step 7 This permitted the machine to boot normally when I rebooted and touch wood, has behaved since. Installing the Nvidia driver like this means next Kernal update I may have a problem again (I think?), is there a step I can take now to head that off and have normal behaviour from the pesky machine? -- upgrade breaks graphic drivers and x, preventing login or startx https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/464591 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 305301] Re: [RC410] Xpress 200M hangs when resuming from suspend with DRI (needs KMS)
I will investigate this. However, I have a commented lene # CONFIG_DRM_I915_KMS is not se in my kernel config. I skipped it, since I thought it was pertinent to intel chips. Interesting, people reporting it not to work and brings more issues. In my case, besides the fact that the laptop boots SLOWER, the kernel is fast and nice. Could that misbehaving thing be a KMS option? I will try to build with KMS and will compare. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 345119] Re: [i965 X3100] X freezes randomly, only mouse pointer still functional
Blacklisting i915 kernel module is not enough. With the i915 module blacklisted, and the initramfs image updated, the i915 module still gets loaded somehow. It looks like Xorg forces the module to load when it starts up. These are the commands I used to disable the i915 kernel module: sudo -i echo blacklist i915 /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-i915.conf echo blacklist intel_agp /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-i915.conf cd /lib/modules/2.6.31-14-generic/kernel/drivers/gpu/drm/i915/ mv i915.ko i915.ko.old update-initramfs -u reboot My /etc/X11/Xorg.conf file is empty. With the i915 module not loaded, I have a functioning Xorg that doesn't freeze. I am still running xserver-xorg-video-intel driver, but I don't get xv video playback. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 467967] Re: [KM400]KDE not working after Karmic upgrade
Bartosz, I'd previously tried the Jaunty kernel to no effect. However, I noticed that there were a bunch of updates for Xorg via apt which I've upgraded to and then tried again. There was also a new minor kernel release which I've also installed. NormalUser is my usual account. TempUser is an account I created for testing in case this was happening due to a bum KDE config. So, here is what I found: 1. The two Karmic kernels do not allow me to log in and in out of 3 attempts hangs the machine. [both users] 2. Neither kernel allows console logins (via drop-down option) from the login window. [both users] 3. I can get to the recovery root shell. startx loads X and then hangs the system. 4. The Jaunty kernel also does not allow me to log in. [both users] 5. However, I could reach the console via the console login option. 6. startx using NormalUser failed. 7. startx using TempUser succeeded. I used the output from Xorg.0.log to create a xorg.conf file in /etc/X11/. (see attached) 8. startx using NormalUser now succeeded. KDE apps are a little unstable though. 9. Toggling back to the console window shows that DRI was automatically disabled. (see attached) I noticed on your linked wiki page that there's a binary driver from VIA for 9.04. Will this work with 9.10? Are there plans to add this to the restricted drivers list? Will you be releasing a .deb with DRI disabled? [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 399636] Re: [i915gm] karmic 2.6.31-2 and -3 lid closing blacks screen until reboot on thinkpad r52
I have a workaround, use it with precaution: 1. sudo bash 1.1 apt-get install vbetool 2. cd /etc/acpi 3. mv lid.sh lid.sh.orig 4. cat lid.sh.new #!/bin/bash if [ ! $(cat /proc/acpi/button/lid/LID/state | grep open) = ]; then vbetool dpms on fi 5. ln -s lid.sh.new lid.sh In nutshell, replace the current lid.sh with the snippet above (it comes from gentoo as far as I remember). Note that this step may harm your computer; if a new ubuntu supported lid.sh is installed by system manager, some unseen problem can occur -- [i915gm] karmic 2.6.31-2 and -3 lid closing blacks screen until reboot on thinkpad r52 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/399636 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 411139] Re: Touchpad re-enabled and SHMConfig reset to false
Dear Bryce, I will do that check when I upgrade to Ubuntu 9.10. The problem remains, but only exists if I do not plug in an external mouse. I expect it has to do with the touchpad being Alps and having an eraser button on the keyboard, but I am not sure. It is quicly triggered if I both move the eraser button and slide my finger across the touchpad at the same time. But as you say, let me check if the problem remains with 9.10 then I'll refile. For now I just always have a mouse plugged in to the laptop, or else keep my fingers far away from the touchpad. One question, though: is there a particular way I should upgrade that will make sure any problematic .conf or other files are not retained from 9.4? Thanks. Sincerely, Russell -- Russell R. Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 475917] Re: [i945GME, nomodeset] mouse cursor invisible
I discovered why one of the users was unaffacted upon login: She had no ~/.config/monitors.xml file (where gnome-display-properties saves it settings). Once she manually used gnome-display-properties, the cursor started disappeared, and on her next login it was invisible. After removing ~/.config/monitors.xml, her new logins have a cursor. So a workaround to this bug is to never use gnome-display-properties, only xrandr. And rm ~/.config/monitors.xml if you have used it before. I'm not sure if this bug should be marked as affecting gnome-display-properties - whatever resolution it requests, the video driver should still be responsible for showing a cursor. -- [i945GME,nomodeset] mouse cursor invisible https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/475917 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 479323] [NEW] External monitor suddenly gets wrong resolution on laptop (nvidia).
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg This worked fine up until sometime between Nov 2, 2009 and Nov 7 2009. By working fine, I mean that nvidia-settings correctly detected the resolution and the name of an external monitor, using the 185 driver. Now, all external monitors show up as CRT-0, and have a low resolution of 1024x768 in nvidia-settings. Switch back to kernel 2.6.31 from 2.6.32 does not fix it; neither does upgrading to nvidia-drivers 190.32 from 185. Investigation reveals that /var/log/Xorg.0.log contains the line: NVIDIA(GPU-0): Unable to read EDID for display device CRT-0 This problem occurs on two different external flat panels with 1900x1200 resolution, which both worked just last week. Finally, I installed read-edid, and executed the command sudo get-edid | parse-edid The EDID for the builtin flat panel is just fine, but is followed by: Reading next EDID block VBE/DDC service about to be called Read EDID Performing real mode VBE call Interrupt 0x10 ax=0x4f15 bx=0x1 cx=0x0 Function supported Call failed The EDID data should not be trusted as the VBE call failed Error: output block unchanged parse-edid: IO error reading EDID I really don't know what could be causing this, but perhaps this change: xorg-server (2:1.6.4-2ubuntu4) karmic; urgency=low * Add 188_default_primary_to_first_busid.patch: X can abort if multiple video devices are present, and none are marked as primary. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 473114] Re: Iiyama monitor's native resolution does not display properly
OK, now home, tried workarounds, and can confirm that this does indeed seem to be a duplicate of bug #444139. I did the following: First I enabled KMS as per comment #3 in bug #444139, which helped things noticeably, I was able to go to Normal visual effects without a crash, and still had my background, so that was definite progress. Window animations were still very slow, however. OK, so I upgraded xserver-xorg-core to the 1.6.5 version in Debian, and this did not fix the problem. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 305301] Re: [RC410] Xpress 200M hangs when resuming from suspend with DRI (needs KMS)
gene, your e-mail address is not exposed, unless some people answer to the bug mail instead of posting comments via the web interface (please use the web interface) and quotes your e-mail and includes your e-mail address (please never quote mail if you absolutely have to use mail instead of web). In all cases, the web interface will try to hide all e-mail addresses from people who are not logged into launchpad. subchee, you in particular should stop quoting everybody. It also makes the report long and unreadable. gene, I915 is only for Intel cards. Your kernel is probably built with KMS support, you just need to enable it as explained in the wiki. Comment 13 also fixed my problem, https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager- applet/+bug/467749, which I incorrectly assigned to NM. The computer is a Lenovo R51, http://www.charlescurley.com/Lenovo.R51.html. The display does seem a bit slower, but not enough to be a problem. I had Compiz enabled when I tested this change, and it seemed to work fine for the few minutes I had it enabled. I then turned off Compiz, and then could not turn it back on (no drivers).
