[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 56912] Re: (needs x11 protocol update) Impossible to configure more the 4 keyboard layouts
What is the status of this? I would like to have more than four keyboard layouts---it is one of the few things that make me nostalgic for Windows! I have my system set up for English, Greek, French and Spanish keyboards. I mostly use English and Greek, but on occasion I use the Spanish and French, but once-in-awhile, I might want to type up a quote from say, German. Since I'm up against my limit, I have to go to the character map and find my umlauted vowels and sharp S. Since this is a pain, is there anything I can do to help so that make more layouts available to users? -- (needs x11 protocol update) Impossible to configure more the 4 keyboard layouts https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/56912 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to x11proto-core in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 367442] Re: [CLE266][regression] Jaunty and Intrepid screen xserver won't start
OK. Built it successfully. And checked it! 1) Commented out the "no accel" option 2) Added modeSwitch new option Still there is the problem with disappearing windows. When I drag a window by clicking and holding the title bar in the right-bottom direction it disappears looking like being eaten from above and left side of the window. After several tries the system finally freezes, although it's possible to access it by SSH. Not everything is refreshed. Like the notification area in the upper- right corner. There is a half a Volume Indicator icon in place of Ubuntu One icon. The login screen was distorted and looked like a puzzle, although most part of it was visible. But I was able to scroll the screen when using Chromium Browser. It looked perfectly! [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 367442] Re: [CLE266][regression] Jaunty and Intrepid screen xserver won't start
Tried to install Ubuntu using the alternate CD: I installed the base system and the ubuntu-desktop using aptitude. But I was unable to build a debug version of Openchrome driver (SVN). When trying to "configure" the package I get the error saying that Xorg Server is not installed amongst other three packages the names of which I cannot recall right now. Four packages missing altogether that were not available in the repository. Building Openchrome driver failed. The Live CD 9.10 installation was a real nightmare, too. I used a "safe graphics" installation only to see that my graphics card was blinking the whole screen not able to load the X Server (the graphics). I fixed this by issuing the following command: # /etc/init.d/gdm stop Then, as always, I added the "noaccel" option to the xorg.conf file and everything went smooth after all. I hope the above information helps in finding the bug. NOW, let me try the "modeSwitch" "new" :) -- [CLE266][regression] Jaunty and Intrepid screen xserver won't start https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/367442 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-openchrome in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

Unfortunately this bug seems to be still with us. Fresh install of Karmic on a Lenovo T61, everything up to date. Get the dreaded INFO: task i915/0:365 blocked for more than 120 seconds. message. It seems random, but on reflection I think it happens when I hit a key or move the mouse after the machine has powered down the display because of no mouse/keyboard activity. ** Description changed: - Enabling reflection plugin results in random freezes (about 2-3 per - hour) + Enabling reflection plugin results freezes. Either random (about 2-3 per + hour), or the freeze is instant and prevents logging on to the desktop + until compiz can be disabled from the shell. I have a Lenovo Thinkpad X61 with Intel GM965 graphics adapter. I have migrated my home from another Lenovo (T60) with fglrx adapter, and the dot compiz directory had the issue. After two days of looking for the cause of the random freezes, reproduced both in 32 & 64 bits Ubuntu, with and without wireless drivers as pointed out by some people, the main cause looks like related ONLY with this compiz plugin. Disabling this plugin solves the problem Steps to reproduce: 1. Be sure your driver adapter is GM965 (fglrx worked fine) 2. apt-get install compiz-fusion-plugins-extra ccsm 3. ccsm 4. Enable reflection plugin (no special options) 5. Work as usual... after a while the system should crash -- sometimes in less than 5 seconds. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 486056] [NEW] Setting up dual-head of exactly 2048 pixels wide ends up with a black screen. Setting it up with more than 2048 pixels crashes X
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg External monitor positioned to the left of LCD. When width is less than 2048 pixels, everything works as expected. Crash with more than 2048 pixels could be from a Compiz problem (this GPU cannot handle more than 2048 pixels). With less than 2048 pixels (I am using the external monitor at 800x600) it works flawlessly. Placing external monitor on top of (or, presumably under) the LCD works (not reaching the 2048 pixel limit). Unfortunately external monitor is a CRT and this arrangement won't fit on my desk. You have been subscribed to a public bug: When playing video in Movie Player or VLC, it does not scale up to fill the window (or screen, when full-screen). gxine kind-of can, but has flickers of horizontal lines across the entire screen even when the video window is small. In Movie Player, the zoom functions don't change the image size. Full-screen playback worked fine in Ubuntu 9.04. The PC is using the sis driver. Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 482656] [NEW] Ubuntu 9.10 freezes presumably because of ATI video
You have been subscribed to a public bug: I've installed Ubuntu 9.10 for the first time at my laptop RoverBook Voyager H570L. After I logged in it loads GNOME when I try to run an application (and sometimes without my activity) it freezes completely (even mouse doesn't move, NumLock doesn't work, no combination like Ctrl+SysRq+... help). In fail safe mode GNOME works just fine. The only trouble I've found is that System -> Administration -> System Monitor shows the window which is completely unreadable, it is even impossible to understand, what is tries to show as it look like lots of vertical and horizontal lines of different colors. Though I can move the window (dragging the top line) or close it (clicking the place where the cross should be). In OpenDoc artifacts on buttons appear. So may be there is a problem with videocard. But anything else works fine, the resolution is correct, I can play video. The videocard is ATI M7 Mobility Radeon 7500 What can I do to make it work in not failsafe mode? ** Affects: xserver-xorg-video-ati (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Incomplete ** Tags: freeze -- Ubuntu 9.10 freezes presumably because of ATI video https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/bugs/482656 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-ati in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 485700] [NEW] kdm does not start (karmic, kde 4.3.3)
You have been subscribed to a public bug: Binary package hint: kdebase-workspace I have upgraded my Karmic from KDE 4.3.2 to 4.3.3. Everything worked like a charm. But on Nov, 17 there was a Ubuntu upgrade (Kernel 2.6.31.15, Xorg, ...). After that I've done a reboot an my system hang at starting the login manager (KDM). I have the same behavior on my laptop an on my pc. My laptop uses intel graphics and kernel based mode setting. I can't reach any console. The screen is blank or has some stripes. The only thing I can do is a shutdown via power button. On my pc I get the message that x could not be startet and some options will be shown with low screen resolution. If I choose the failsafe one the KDM starts as usually and the screen resolution is changed to full (1980x1200). The pc has a NVidia graphics card build in. If I choose the GDM as default everything woks fine. No errors, no freezes. What is happend? It seems that KDM has some troubles but why? [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 485651] [NEW] Karmic + KDM + NVidia = Can't boot (low graphic mode)
You have been subscribed to a public bug: Binary package hint: kdm My configuration: - Kubuntu Karmic - KDM, KDE - NVidia driviers (proprietary) Since an update that I made a couple of weeks ago, the system has not been able to startup properly: - Rarely: everything is fine and KDE is started - Often: I get a "low graphic mode" dialog after the first boot phase (the low graphic mode is displaty when KDM is loaded I think) - Very Often: I get a blank sreen and I can't do anything (seems frozen, even CTRL+ALT+F1 doesn't always display the terminal) After searching in the forums, it seems that this is a frequent problem: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=8320709 (except that the solution that would be to install the latest kernel didn't solve the problem for me) http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=8344549 http://ubuntu-ky.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1315126 Replacing using GDM instead of KDM worked for me (and I think that I'm not the only one). Please read a duplicate: https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/438000 The issue was best summarized by dhenry: "The problem is that "xrandr" and "gnome-display-properties" will systematically setup the external monitor next to the LVDS, without checking if it's possible. Those tools should not do this if hardware does not allow it. The problem is that those tools are not aware that compiz is running (which reduces the hardware limit to 2048x2048), and so try to create the too large frame buffer (which is legal without compiz)." -- [i945gme] attaching external monitor: laptop display is black, external monitor too, with frozen mouse coursor https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/419328 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is the registrant for xf86-video-intel. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

reply to comment #62: Here is what I did: - booted up with VGA cable disconnected from laptop - logged in as ordinary user - turned off visual effects in preferences - killed compiz-decorator process (not sure this step is necessary) - connected the VGA cable - ran xrandr --auto: this went OK (no crash) - ran display prefs to use dual-head mode; this went fine. - removed the VGA cable - logged off then on again - turned on visual effects - connected the cable - ran display preferences and X crashed (black screens, external screen is on, it is showing an immobile mouse pointer in the left middle). However, it is ridiculous that Windows users can switch their graphics card on the fly, but Ubuntu users are expected to both install/remove some software package and alter the graphics card setting in their bios. Ubuntu provides the user with no hint that you could actually make the graphics card switching work by removing some package, and even if it did this would be hard for a regular user to understand. I'm an experienced user, and I thought for a year that my other graphics card might be broken. -- mesa doesn't work when fglrx is installed https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/442574 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to fglrx-installer in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 419328] Re: [i945gme] attaching external monitor: laptop display is black, external monitor too, with frozen mouse coursor
--Can someone please confirm that disabling compiz (or mutter, or anything other than metacity) makes the --problem go away? For me it works better without compiz, but... Activating the external screen with my self-configured hotkey does not work the first time after reboot (false resolution or black screen with movable mouse), i have to press it twice, but after that i can connect / disconnect my external screen, change resolution etc. without any problems. Having desktop effects enabled is similar: depending on the external screen that I connect(!) the system crashes or is just not working after the first try, but can be activated with the second try and after that it is also working flawlessly... -- [i945gme] attaching external monitor: laptop display is black, external monitor too, with frozen mouse coursor https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/419328 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is the registrant for xf86-video-intel. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 313701] Re: [KM400]black screen after logout
Ok, short answer: yes and no. Full story: I've updated my copy of the openchrome source to svn revision 817. I ran './configure --enable-debug --prefix=/usr' and then proceeded with make. I uninstalled the xserver-xorg-video-openchrome package and installed the self-built openchrome driver with checkinstall. Then the machine was rebooted. Things that worked before still worked, so I could log in to my desktop with GDM. I suspended the machine, resumed it and logged out. I got the, to me, familiar black screen instead of the GDM login screen. The corresponding Xorg.0.log file is attached as Xorg.0.log.before. Then it hit me that I did not, as requested, put in the Option "ModeSwitch" "new" in the xorg.conf file. I went to a console and logged in, added the necessary Option line to the Device section and did a 'sudo restart gdm'. Amazingly, life got back into my dead login screen: the backlight turned on and I could see, well, colors. I've attached a picture I took with my camera of the screen so show what I mean (gdm_restart.jpg). The corresponding log file is attached as Xorg.0.log.after. So, this Option does make a big difference. Unfortunately the display is unreadable. I then rebooted the machine to report on this issue here, but unfortunately I could log in at all anymore, since the login screen was garbled and mostly black. I made a picture of this as well (gdm_boot.jpg). I couldn't even get to a console anymore, and had to reboot in single mode to comment out the Option "ModeSwitch" "new" line in xorg.conf. After a reboot, everything is back to the way they were. Thank you for your continuing effort!
