[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 486593] Re: [P4M900]Random X crashes

2009-11-23 Thread Bartosz
When you install the latest openchrome from svn, the previous openchrome
revision will be overwritten.

So just do all steps which was described at:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/OpenChrome#openChrome%202D%20driver%20compilation

and restart machine.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 358643] Re: Xorg crashed with SIGSEGV in DeleteInputDeviceRequest()

2009-11-23 Thread mu3en
@sachin

best response i can give you is, unfortunately, that there are serious
issues with 9.10 karmic in some configurations.

you can add your own xorg.conf in karmic to get things working (pretty
much just as explained above), but for me at least there are still
constant crashes and calibration issues at boot, after suspend, etc...

i should point out that these various issues may not in fact be related
to this bug at all though.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 486722] [NEW] Resolution for login window and user session autoconfigured to wrong resolution on fresh installation

2009-11-23 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: gdm

When I install Ubuntu I am autoconfigured the wrong resolution for my 1024x768
screen (1600x1200). In System-Preferences-Display I can change the resolution
to 1024x768 but the refresh rate is stuck at 0hz (Impossible) and the monitor
is identified as Unknown. After this adjustment the session is in the correct
resolution.
Unfortunately the System-Preferences-Display adjustment does not effect the
login dialogue which is still configured to 1600x1200. This means I am unable
to see all of the features of the display window because they are situated off
the bottom right hand corner of the screen.
Before the Login Screen appears there is the loading screen (Brown with the
lights going along a line under the logo for Ubuntu) and this is also set to
1600x1200.
--
I use Ubuntu 9.10 64 bit.
--

  Version table:

I think this bug deserves attention because it looks unprofessional and impedes
usability. I can't lock screen or put to sleep without logging in because it is
off the screen.
Thank you!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 413296] Re: Nvidia binary driver won't build with 2.6.31-rt kernel

2009-11-23 Thread Cattus
In my system, tho, I'm experiencing complete instability with the
185.18.36 on the 2.6.31-9-rt kernel from Ubuntu Studio 9.10. I'm
experiencing this running a Nvidia Go 7700 with compiz turned on with
'Extra' effects.

Changing to 'None' appears to solve some issues, at least so far I've
noticed in 2 days running the box.

Also, on the default instalation there were problems with artifacts
rendering the system unusable to a complete mess on screen with windows
shaped like triangles flying around.

Turned off powermizer with the PerfLevelSrc=0x fix and problems
remained only on instability like blinking, compiz changing automaticly
to None setting and random freezes that eventually turn into a system
crash once I used a scroll bar for too long.

I'll gladly welcome any advice.

Regards,
Miguel Angelo

Idem dito. Dell Inspiron 6400, screen stays off (black) after closing
and openening the lid, regardless of power management settings. Screen
is restored after a suspend-to-ram/resume cycle.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 487184] Re: Okular with intel graphics driver does not draw view in page thumbnail

2009-11-23 Thread David Benjamin
This also occurs with ksnapshot's region capture mode feature. As both
these involve transparent overlays of things, I imagine this is in fact
the same bug.

Steps to reproduce for ksnapshot:
1. Run ksnapshot
2. Set Capture Mode to Region
3. Press New Snapshot
4. Drag some region of the screen

Expected: Screen gets slightly darker with the region in question left
undarkened and a little resize widget on the border.

This, also, works properly (with some flicker) without hardware
acceleration (ksnapshot -graphicssystem raster)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 484875] [NEW] Nvidia GPU overheating on Toshiba P100

2009-11-23 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Toshiba Satellite P100 PSP-A3C laptop, Nvidia GeForce Go 7600, running
Karmic 2.6.31-15, Nvidia proprietary driver 185.

GNOME-Sensors applet reports CPU stable at about 60 C, GPU climbs slowly
up to about 90 C, then the system shuts down.

On 9.04, I had the same problem, but I was able to load a custom DSDT,
after which the fan ran properly, and the system stayed cool, GPU around
65 C. Also stays cool under Windows XP.

I understand that it is not possible to load a custom DSDT under karmic,
so I need another solution.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 479038] Re: Unable to set lower resolution

2009-11-23 Thread Bryce Harrington
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Please execute the following command in a terminal after
reproducing the issue, and it it will automatically gather debugging
information needed for this bug:

  apport-collect 479038

(You may need to install the python-launchpadlib package from the
universe repository. Additionally, when prompted to give apport-collect
permissions for Launchpad you will need to give it at least the ability
to Change Non-Private data as it will be adding information to your
bug report.)

Also, does it work correctly if you have the projector attached from
boot?

Fwiw, the likely reason that this regressed since 9.04 is because
modesetting (selecting resolutions for different outputs) has moved from
X to the kernel, and so some of the logic may have changed.

Thanks for testing against so many different distros. Can you attach an
xorg.conf and Xorg.0.log and xrandr --verbose from Sabayon or one of the
other cases where it did work?

This sort of sounds like broken edid from the monitor, but that data is
not shown in this Xorg.0.log. Please see
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/ for guidance on collecting and
analyzing the edid to see if the error can be spotted.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 479323] Re: External monitor suddenly gets wrong resolution on laptop (nvidia).

2009-11-23 Thread Bryce Harrington
Thanks for testing this. For what it's worth, I have been suspecting a
recent kernel patch which altered graphics card timings, but I'm not
really sure. It is interesting from that perspective that you booted an
earlier kernel and it did not make the issue go away.

I wonder if something changed somewhere other than the kernel, which
affects being able to read the edid from the graphics card?

Fwiw, there is nothing particularly special about Ubuntu's X.org in
terms of detection of external monitors; it should pretty much work the
same here as upstream and other distros. We sometimes carry some quirks
or other local fixes, but not in this case.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 454128] Re: [KM400] KDE not working on kernel 2.6.31 (DRI problem)

2009-11-23 Thread Franz Apeltauer
Unfortunately I cannot send you the Xorg.0.log for Option ModeSwitchMethod
new. When this option is set, then the PC crashes right after kdm starts. No
response to any key or mouse movement, not even Alt-SysReq-...
After rebooting with ModeSwitchMethod commented out, the Xorg.0.log.old
contains only garbage (parts of dmesg, parts of a cups log, ...)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 484875] Re: Nvidia GPU overheating on Toshiba P100

2009-11-23 Thread WeatherGod
JP, before switching over to the free/open drivers, I would like to forward
this bug report to the nvidia people. They would like to have a particular log
file included in the bug report that can be generated by running: sudo
nvidia-bug-report.sh
It will produce a file called nvidia-bug-report.log in your current working
directory. If you can upload that log file to this bug report, I can then push
this report up to nvidia.

After that, feel free to test out the open/free drivers that are
available.

The kernel patch certainly could have an effect. I tested to make sure

did not rule out that it was introduced somewhere in the 2.6.31-??
series. I suspect that the altered graphics card timings

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 345119] Re: [i965 X3100] X freezes randomly, only mouse pointer still functional

2009-11-23 Thread Sergey A Konyukhov
Ubuntu Karmic.
2.6.32 rc7 (vanilla and Ubuntu's one built manually using working .config from
2.6.31.5 with make oldconfig) doesn't work as it should: no bootsplash, no gdm
start progress, no gnome desktop at all. Only horizontal lines that randomly
appears and a mouse cursor on it.

Furthermore, 2.6.31.5 and some previous and default ubuntu kernels works
right on my machine.

Vesa isn't working on my computer either (bug 401214), but I have

KMS, though, so the kernel option 'nomodeset' and driver vesa may
give you a computer in working order.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 454220] Re: Nvidia fail with DKMS on linux-generic-pae - needs depends on -pae kernel header file package

2009-11-23 Thread lunkwill
Note related bug in jockey:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/karmic/+source/jockey/+bug/451305

I installed linux-headers-generic-pae and did a

dpkg-reconfigure nvidia-185-kernel-source

But I got the Module build for the currently running kernel was skipped
since the kernel source for this kernel does not seem to be installed
error (even though the headers were there). I had to

apt-get remove --purge linux-headers-2.6.31-15

And then, when I did an

apt-get install linux-headers-2.6.31-15-pae

it automatically rebuilt (successfully) the nvidia.ko.

(Also, I note that when xorg fails, it restarts very very quickly and
doesn't ever seem to give up, making it impossible to login to a VT, as
was possible with the earlier init scheme. This should probably also be
considered a significant bug.)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 479038] Re: Unable to set lower resolution

2009-11-23 Thread Ben Andersen
Thanks for your nice response! And also for informing me what might be
the underlying problem. Keep up the good work!!

And you can now close this defect as it works to set the resolution to
1024x768 now! Some fix must have gone in between the time when I
reported this and now. I'll attach the list of installed packages in
case you're curious to see my current versions.. dpkg -l

When I started up with the projector installed I could just select
800x600 or 640x480. It's a Panasonic pt-ae700e. And when starting with
the monitor and switching to the projector and doing Detect screens
nothing happened. It was still the monitors resolutions being displayed.
But anyway, I'm happy. This is far better than nothing!

Thanks!

Ben

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 447892] Re: [i855GM] Freeze shortly after X startup on Intel i855

2009-11-23 Thread Geir Ove Myhr
Another thing that may work (and it is useful for us to know whether it does
for you) is the 'nomodeset' option combined with the xorg.conf from comment
#19. I think this is what acpi=off might be doing (in addition to turning off
power management and other stuff). It seems that on some chipsets the DRI
option in xorg.conf is ignored when KMS is used, (c.f. comment #6). Could you
try the following two cases and upload the resulting Xorg.0.log here?
1. xorg.conf from comment #19 without nomodeset. (My hypothesis: You get a
freeze, so you will have to get the Xorg.0.log via ssh)
2. xorg.conf from comment #19 with nomodeset. (My hypothesis: No freeze)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 486473] [NEW] Mouse starts acting weird.

2009-11-23 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

From time to time my mouse starts acting weird. The pointer still moves
as expected but on clicks it reacts as if the position didn't change
(i.e. wherever I click, the reaction stays the same.)

Since this happens in KDE as well as in XFCE, I think this bug is in
xorg or hald. But I'm not quite sure where exactly.

I'm running an up-to-date kubuntu 9.10 (amd64).

edit: Got some additional information:
GDM won't start. It just pops up a message that says it won't start due to the
Error (EE) HID 046a:0023: failed to initialize for relative axes..
046a:0023 is my keyboard. It has no axis. (Bus 003 Device 002: ID 046a:0023
Cherry GmbH Cymotion Master Linux Keyboard)
KDM starts without an error message.

The mouse position seems not to be caught at one point but at an area (i.e. a
textarea in a chatprogram or the menu of a window).
As I tried to describe: The visible pointer is not caught at all. But when I
click it reacts as if it was in the area where it's caught.

I have no idea how to trigger the bug. It happens while watching movies
or typing (it just happened while I wrote this). It once even happened
directly after the login.

2009-11-23 Thread kalessin
Sorry to disappoint, but I just re-checked and indeed all test data I
submitted so far had set the DRI=off option (as can be seen from the Xorg
logs I posted). This stems from the very first tests I did, and in order
not to introduce to many variables, I left it at that setting. So I can
confirm at least that nomodeset and DRI=off has no apparent positive
effect on my hardware.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 220628] Re: [MASTER] firefox-3.0b5 received an X Window System error: 'BadIDChoice'

2009-11-23 Thread Joel Ebel
Correct. The problem doesn't occur with libxcb1 1.1-1ubuntu1. I did
notice that this is exposed by the fact that we divert /usr/bin/firefox
to /usr/bin/firefox.distrib. The problem doesn't occur if
/usr/bin/firefox-3.0 is called directly. I also discovered a similar
error starting gnome-screensaver with the new libxcb that is not present
with the original version.

 $ gnome-screensaver
gnome-screensaver: ../../src/xcb_lock.c:33: _XCBUnlockDisplay: Assertion
`xcb_get_request_sent(dpy-xcb-connection) == dpy-request' failed.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 459931] Re: karmic - no mouse response while holding down keys

2009-11-23 Thread Boynas
Ok, this happens only while using the touch pad.
This laptop is a Thinkpad T61p, it has a touchpad and on of those red points,
and I have a USB keyboard and mouse connected through the docking station.

Everything works fine exept the touchpad.

even if it is docked or undocked the touchpad loses control for a second
everytime that i press any key in my laptop keyboard or in the external
USB keyboard.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 487347] [NEW] Samsung NC10 touchpad generates hundres of interrupts per minutes

2009-11-23 Thread Jon Grossart
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-input-synaptics

Ubuntu 9.10 fresh install (generally base configuration with no external
hardware connected)
xserver-xorg-input-synaptics 1.1.2-1ubuntu7
Samsung NC10 11CA BIOS

When performing testing to reduce battery drain on my NC10 netbook, I've
been tracking the CPU wake-ups. I was using gnome-power-statistics to
track the CPU.

When the computer was idle, there would be around 40 wake-ups per
second. While using the trackpad, there would be ~475 interrupts for
the trackpad as well as ~150 additional interrupts per second generally
increased (totalling around ~667/second). I even had one instance (not
recorded unfortunately, where it was in the thousands). I compared this
against other laptops running fresh 9.10 installation as well as
desktops running it. Even using a USB mouse, they only generate tens or
less of interrupts per second, not hundreds.

Since other laptops don't show this problem but the NC10 does, I'm
guessing it's a cofiguration/setup issue.

I was looking at Bug #194489, and it seems to be perhaps related, but
somewhat different. If I'm not using the touchpad, it doesn't generate
spurious interrupts, but when I do use it, it seems to be way too high.

synaptics/+bug/194489

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 487352] [NEW] xorg crashes on login with PAE kernel + nvidia

2009-11-23 Thread lunkwill
Public bug reported:

Machine (Dell T1500) seems stable with stock karmic kernel. Switched to
PAE kernel, installed headers so driver can recompile, came up to gdm
login okay. But autologin fails instantly, dropping me back to the
login screen. Logging in fails about 90% of the time -- screen flashes
and I get dropped back to gdm. Once in a while it actually logs in
okay, at which point it seems to be fine.

/var/log/gdm/:0.log.1 shows SIGSEGV in nvidia_drv.so. (will attach).

BTW, ubuntu-bug sucks for reporting xorg problems. Can I please have
the ability to open a text file and type these comments from the
affected machine so I don't have to type an ugly URL into another
machine to get here?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 487361] [NEW] nvidia 7600GS does not boot from install cd or from first boot

2009-11-23 Thread karlrhs
Public bug reported:

The default xorg driver does not show a workable screen from the install
cd or from the standard xorg driver after installation. I needed to
drop to a root console to install the nv 180 driver for my nvidia 7600GS
systems. It was very frustrating because about 20 of my systems use the
nividia 7600GS card. Having no display show up when booting from cd or
after using the text install from the 1st hard drive on every machine
was a pain. I have noticed several bug reports with the nvidia 7600
cards closed or just dropped. This is a true bug in the Karmic final
release. I have tried it on multiple machines.

karlrhs

Its been having boot problems for about a week now, the pale ACER logo screen
appears then goes to a blank screen, also the BIOS setting option dont appear
(F2) so I cant get into BIOS. i've been looking around for solutions such as
re-seating the RAM, putting the BIOS update on a flash pen drive and booting up
holding the FN + ESC keys and tried the ACER Boot disc but none seem to be
working. I have a LINUX disc (UBUNTU) it runs from the disc only so it does not
affect my machine. It first starts up with the options:

1, Try Ubuntu without any change to your computer
2, Install Ubuntu
3, Check disc for defects
4, Test Memory
5, Boot from first hard disk (I tried this and it just goes to a blank screen)

It also has F function options:

F1 = Help
F2 = Language
F3 = Keymap
F4 = Modes
F5 = Accessibility
F6 = Other Options

Press F4 to select alternative start-up and installation modes

I select the first option Try Ubuntu

It runs the Ubuntu load up sequence (takes awhile) then it checks if
everything is [OK]. After this sequence a Error Caution message appears
saying:

Ubuntu is running in low-graphics mode
The following error was encountered. You may need to update your configuration
to solve this.

(EE) NV(0): No valid FB address in PCI config space
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.

The only option i get is to click OK. Then it comes up with a menu
saying

What would you like to do?

1, Run Ubuntu in low-graphics mode for just one session
2, Reconfigure graphics
3, Troubleshoot the error
4, Exit to console login

I ran the first option and a blue screen pops up saying:

there already appears to be an X server running on display :0. Should
another display number by tried? Answering no will cause GDM to attempt
starting the server on :0 again. (You can change consoles by pressing
Ctrl-Alt plus a function key, such as Ctrl-Alt-F7 to go to console 7. X
servers usually run on console 7 and higher)

I press yes and Ubuntu loads. I looked in Hardware Drivers, it comes up
with three drivers:

1, NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (version 180) [Recommended]
2, NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (version 173)
3, NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (version 96)

None of them are Activated and it won't let me activate them. It does
state No proprietary drivers are in use on this system.

I restarted to get back to the options above and chose the third option
Troubleshoot the error. It comes up with more options:

What information would you like to review?

1, Review the xserver log file
2, Review the startup errors
3, Edit configuration file
4, Archive configuration and logs

I clicked option two and one error was found

Fatal Server Error: No screens found.

I am not sure where or what to do next, I was running a Windows 7
professional edition. But it seems to have died on me, Im new to Ubuntu
so im kind of lost.

Now my system is running ubuntu under a resolution of 800*600 (temporary
installation method).
Will permenantly installing Ubuntu Fix this?

I hope the information I gave here is understandable. If you need anymore
information please ask.
