downgraded from xorg-edgers to mainstream Karmic xorg and the issue

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 493289] Re: package nvidia-185-kernel-source not installed failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed pre-removal script killed by signal Interrupt

2009-12-07 Thread john mall
Hello Jean-Baptiste,

thanks for your reply.

I agree, the issue might be related to that problem.
And yes, the removal process was interrupted. First when i ran aptitude upgrade
and my x-server
crashed. The second time when i tried to dpkg-reconfigure -a. CPU went to 100%
and after 15min
i just interrupted the process by killing it with ctrl+c.

Any suggestions how i might fix this?
Your help is appreciated!
Thanks in advance.

Greetings,
mantikor

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 491483] Re: Since failsave-x was enabled in karmic it starts if gdm is disabled and kdm is used. (low graphics mode error)

2009-12-07 Thread Sylvain Chamberland
The solution by Philip at post 51 with modifications suggested by Steve
at post 54 worked for me (latest updates, 2.6.31-16 kernel).

I'm using Kubuntu Karmic Netbook on an Acer Aspire One netbook and I
couldn't even see a low graphics mode: there were only random pixels as
if I was trying to set a bigger resolution than the one supported by the
screen.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 493517] [NEW] kdm crashing because of gdm and x11-common 1:7.4+3ubuntu10

2009-12-07 Thread kolAflash
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: x11-common

Since a few days, after updating to ureadahead, my kdm login didn't
worked any more. I could find a workaround to it, but in the end i
didn't found out what all that had to do with ureadahead.

I already posted a lot about this problem here:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=8449299
and here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ureadahead/+bug/484677

So to me is seems like x11-common version 1:7.4+3ubuntu10 and gdm try to detect
if the x-session starts correctly and if not they try to start a failsave
session.
So if you have kdm and gdm installed, because of something gdm and x11-common
doesn't seem to detect the running kdm session and try to start an failsave
x11-session.

By this, you get a black screen with a non blinking cursor on the upper
left.

As a workaround, you can:
- switch to gdm OR
- uninstall gdm OR
- downgrade x11-common to 1:7.4+3ubuntu7

This all happend on a system which was updated from 8.10 to 9.04 to 9.10. I'm
using all the KDE-Stuff (including kdm) but Gnome is installed too.
If you need more information, please take a look at the links I posted. There
is also some stuff from my xorg.log!

Thanks!
kolAflash

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 491483] Re: Since failsafe-x was enabled in karmic it starts if gdm is disabled and kdm is used. (low graphics mode error)

2009-12-07 Thread Manish
I feel Steve Langasek's opinion makes sense (post #54). GDM should not
exit with non zero stauts when it is disabled. If it exits with 0 then
failsafe-x will not start and we won't have issue with KDM.

If GDM is disabled or loaded correctly the failsafe-x should not start.

I know I am mixing many things together but ...

Another question is what if KDM failed to start correctly? Should the
failsafe-x start?

I also find this regression frustrating and unemulated elsewhere. While
I think that user interface progress/change is a good thing, changing
something fundamental like this without either making it opt-in, or
giving people an opt-out is disingenuous at best.

My machine is slow enough without it being made even slower through
software delays.

Please assign as whatever necessary to bring the old useability back.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 485651] Re: Karmic + KDM + NVidia = Can't boot (low graphic mode)

2009-12-07 Thread DerDave
I confirm the bug, since latest updates including xorg and kernel-image-
generic.

I don't think it's driver related, since I'm using *unsupported* fglrx and a
simple /etc/init.d/kdm restart works beautiful...
It really looks like something is loading wrong at boot time, or at the wrong
moment,

Chances are, it's a kdm startup bug, since i read somewhere that gdm
isn't affected.

Hope it helps.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 491856] Re: [965gm] xorg update results in blank screen on boot

2009-12-07 Thread Olaf Ippisch
I have the same problem on two laptops both having intel chipset graphics. I
can get a running
X-server by adding the kernel option nomodeset (which should have the same
result as setting i915.modeset=0).

If I use kdm as the login manager I also get a low resolution warning.
If I select to exit to the console login and enter 'sudo initctl restart
kdm' than kdm starts up normal and with the intel device. If I use gdm
as the login manager then the X-server works normal. (Probably a problem
with the upstart scripts?). In any case I have to use 'nomodeset'.

This problem occured after the update and was not there, when I upgraded
to Karmic.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 493645] [NEW] Xorg has default screen blanking value set to 600secs

2009-12-07 Thread PaulW
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

Xorg appears to have (hardcoded) a default timeout for blanking the
screen, set to 600 seconds (10 minutes)

If the user tries to disable the screen blanking using gnome-power-
manager (all timeouts disabled, no screen turn off) aswell as the
screensaver being disabled, the screen will go blank after 10 minutes
regardless of the setting.

If you set the blank screen timeout to less than ten minutes, then this
setting is used.

The following is returned when running # xset -q

-
Screen Saver:
  prefer blanking: yesallow exposures: yes
  timeout: 600cycle: 600
-

Again, timeout is set at 600 regardless what the user configures within
gnome.

Adding the following to the xorg.conf file solves this issue:

-
Section ServerFlags
Option BlankTime 0
Option StandbyTime 0
Option SuspendTime 0
Option OffTime 0
EndSection
-

Upon restarting gdm (logout to restart X), the values retrieved by #
xset -q are now correct

-
Screen Saver:
  prefer blanking: yesallow exposures: yes
  timeout: 0cycle: 600
-

Now, the screen will not blank after a default of 10 minutes.

This occurs on both amd64 based installs of Karmic 9.10 at my current
location. I've also noticed quite a few threads on ubuntuforums which
are also describing the same issue, but with no resolve.

Can the timeout be set during the compilation of the xorg package? Or
will it require constant modification of xorg.conf file to sort this
issue? (not the best idea for novice users)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 491483] Re: Since failsafe-x was enabled in karmic it starts if gdm is disabled and kdm is used. (low graphics mode error)

2009-12-07 Thread Bela Lubkin
Although the proposed patch will fix this, it isn't the best approach.

The failsafeXServer script should be split off from gdm, made its own package,
and should be aware of all possible login managers.

The man page init(5) has a lovely example:

stop on stopping gdm or stopping kdm

What's wanted is for /etc/init/failsafe-x.conf to say something like:

   start on stopped $(basename $(cat /etc/X11/default-display-manager))

I don't know if Upstart's parsing supports that sort of shell pipeline
substitution.
I also don't know if it is true in all cases that the _service_ (gdm, xdm
etc.)
name and the name of the binary shoved into /etc/X11/default-display-manager
match in this manner. So the above is only a conceptual example.

What is even more wanted is a concept of a generic service in Upstart. Similar
to how several .deb packages can provide a single service (Java plugin, web
browser, etc.); similar to how /etc/alternatives works:

   start on stopped display-manager

and some other parts of the system deal with mapping display-manager to
whatever it's supposed to be.

BTW this problem has entirely to do with gdm's X failsafe script vs. other login
managers, and nothing to do with kernel releases, choice of video driver, etc.
I'm having the problem with xdm + nVidia open source driver (whatever it's
called).

Another possible field workaround, besides switching to gdm or patching one
of the mentioned scripts, would be to _remove_ gdm. This might be difficult,
depending on what else is marked dependent on it.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 485700] Re: kdm does not start (karmic, kde 4.3.3)

2009-12-07 Thread barnex
I can confirm this on my macbook 1,1 with an intel GMA950. X broke after
some update: I also had only stripes on the screen and this even
affected all tty consoles. I could only boot back into a console by
first chrooting from a live CD and removing kdm. The problem seems
indeed xorg/driver related rather than something in KDE, since starting
gnome/fluxbox/... also does also not work.

Booting into a previous kernel (2.6.31-14), which worked fine before the
update also had a broken X after the update.

2009-12-07 Thread Bela Lubkin
Hmmm, in fact I see that the various failsafe* files are part of the
x11-common package, not of
gdm. The simple fact that x11-common is laying files down in directory
/etc/gdm is a warning
flag (I'm mildly surprised that `lintian` doesn't complain about it).

Thanks for your bug report and for your contribution to ubuntu. In order
to determine if this issue is usplash related, please boot your computer
with usplash disabled and then shutdown to see if you can reproduce the
issue? To disable usplash for a single boot, follow these steps:

1. Press Esc during Grub boot delay to access the boot menu.
2. Select your actual Ubuntu boot line and press e to edit it.
3. Select the kernel line and press e to edit it.
4. At the end of the line, remove splash and quiet and press enter.
5. Type b to boot the custom boot line.

Thanks!

I had success with Philip's gdm patch! kdm[1064]: X server died during
startup and kdm[1064]: Failed to start X server. Starting failsafe X

PLEASE refactor this upstart sprawl. This was a very painful bug for
me. As an Intel IGP owner, I wasn't even given a terminal to fall back
to. It would be a shame if this bug reared its head again.

I have fixed packages queued in my ppa for anyone that doesn't want to

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 493707] [NEW] [Q45] Flickering corruption with KMS and DVI output

2009-12-07 Thread Geir Ove Myhr
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

On two computers of the model Dell Optiplex 760, Ultrasmall Form Factor
the monitor shows some flickering kind of corruption when Xorg is
started.

Present when:
- KMS is used, Monitor (Dell 20 2007FP) connected via DVI-I cable to the DVI-I
output of the computer and DVI-D input of the monitor
Not present when:
- UMS is used (i.e nomodeset boot option)
- Monitor is connected using VGA (DVI-I to VGA adapter on computer, VGA input
on monitor)
- When booting a Lucid LiveUSB image
(none of the not-present cases are thoroughly tested, so some of them may be
coincidentally working when I tried it)
Untested (so far):
- Karmic LiveUSB image
- With a different monitor

Since the problem seems to be related to KMS I have tried the standard
Karmic kernel, the mainline build [1] of 2.6.32 and the current Lucid
kernel (2.6.32-7.10-generic) and they all show the problem.

Problem description:
Most times (i.e. not always) when the computer is booted, some colors will have
flickering blue dots at various places. It seems that some of the dots are
always present while others flicker on and off. It seems that some colors are
more susceptible than others, and that shows up as bands of corruption in
gradients (see attached photo of Ubuntu login screen). The exact pattern is a
little bit different from boot to boot, sometimes it is worse and sometimes
better. On a normal single-color brown desktop there are flickering blue
horizontal lines every now and then spanning the whole desktop.
Sometimes also the VTs and the usplash screen shows flickering blue dots on the
black background.

In order to get as much debug information as possible, I'm reporting
this bug with `ubuntu-bug` running the Lucid kernel and the DRM KMS
debug option drm.debug=0x04. [2]

As a side note, the DVI connection is reported as HDMI2 even though it
is a DVI, but that is probably a separate issue.

I was considering not reporting this, since I will only have access to
this hardware for about one more week. However, I opted for filing a bug
report it so that it may solve as a model bug report for others having
the same problem.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 493707] Re: [Q45] Flickering corruption with KMS and DVI output

2009-12-07 Thread Geir Ove Myhr
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

On two computers of the model Dell Optiplex 760, Ultrasmall Form Factor
the monitor shows some flickering kind of corruption when Xorg is
  started.

  Present when:
  - KMS is used, Monitor (Dell 20 2007FP) connected via DVI-I cable to the
DVI-I output of the computer and DVI-D input of the monitor
  Not present when:
  - UMS is used (i.e nomodeset boot option)
  - Monitor is connected using VGA (DVI-I to VGA adapter on computer, VGA input
on monitor)
  - When booting a Lucid LiveUSB image
(none of the not-present cases are thoroughly tested, so some of them may be
coincidentally working when I tried it)
  Untested (so far):
  - Karmic LiveUSB image
  - With a different monitor

Since the problem seems to be related to KMS I have tried the standard
Karmic kernel, the mainline build [1] of 2.6.32 and the current Lucid
kernel (2.6.32-7.10-generic) and they all show the problem.

  Problem description:
- Most times (i.e. not always) when the computer is booted, some colors will
have flickering blue dots at various places.
+ Most times (i.e. not always) when the computer is booted, some colors will

little bit different from boot to boot, sometimes it is worse and sometimes
better. On a normal single-color brown desktop there are flickering blue
horizontal lines every now and then spanning the whole desktop.
Sometimes also the VTs and the usplash screen shows flickering blue dots on
the black background.

In order to get as much debug information as possible, I'm reporting
this bug with `ubuntu-bug` running the Lucid kernel and the DRM KMS
  debug option drm.debug=0x04. [2]
+
+ The corruption is only present in the native mode (0x40 1600x1200). If I
+ select any of the other modes available from xrandr, there is no
+ corruption. At least once the corruption has disappeared after switching
+ to another mode and back again. (`xrandr --output HDMI2 --mode 0x41` and
+ then `xandr --output HDMI2 --mode 0x40`). I can't reproduce this now (on
+ 2.6.32-7), so it may be kernel dependent.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 426582] Re: (32MB) certain windows drawn garbled when XAA is used

2009-12-07 Thread pcr
I just tried a.tom's xorg.conf and it works pretty well with gnome and
visual FX on from pannel board. I only get some black vertical line
reading video in totem with compiz enable (So i will disable it for the
moment).

One other problem is the DynamicPM option enable : When my screen goes
to sleep mode I am unable to restore something ... (if someone else can
confirmed or help i opened a bug :
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-
ati/+bug/489981).

Just one more question to a.tom can you give me the ppa repository in
order to try latest xorg...ati-driver package ?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 485651] Re: Karmic + KDM + NVidia = Can't boot (low graphic mode)

2009-12-07 Thread DerDave
Actually, I solved my problem, which was fglrx-related. Removing
/etc/ati/amdpcsdb was the solution to my error message fglrx: Unknown
EDID version 0. X server failed to start and I was in the situation
described above.

Anyway it looks like this is happening any time X11 fails to start.

Hope you'll find your way !

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 426582] Re: (32MB) certain windows drawn garbled when XAA is used

2009-12-07 Thread a.tom
Tormod, do you have any advices/remarks on these options I've set in the
xorg.conf? I based it on the radeon man file, having only the
information written there.

Guys, you could also test KMS, I tried it on a desktop Radeon 7500 card and had
some slight performance improvement.
It doesn't work on my laptop though.
Here you can add the test results:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-ati/+bug/478493

enabling KMS is quite easy, its just a GDM shutdown, module reload, GDM restart
as written in:

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 485700] Re: kdm does not start (karmic, kde 4.3.3)

2009-12-07 Thread barnex
This might indeed be a duplicate of
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/491483

I did have gdm installed but was using kdm, which might have caused the
problem.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 493778] [NEW] Running a 3d app (eg. glxgears) crashes Linux with Radeon 9200

2009-12-07 Thread Justin Husted
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

This machine ran Jaunty fine with Compiz 3d etc.

When I updated to Karmic, compiz stopped working. It ran with software
rendering. However, glxgears appeared to have hardware acceleration.

Today I updated with the latest karmic updates and tried again -- it was
now fully software rendering in all cases. So, just to give it a shot,
I pulled out an old PCI rage card that was sitting unused in the
computer (this was originally used for dual head, but Xorg started
segfaulting when I enabled dual head sometime around Hardy or Intrepid).
Now, when I run glxgears in Xorg, the screen goes dark and Linux
crashes.

It appears to hard-lock in X11, though behavior varies. Typically the
screen goes black immediately and goes into DPMS sleep. One time the
screen went black, but I was able to ssh in and saw X11 using 100% of
CPU. When I killed X the machine crashed. Another time, X was frozen
except the mouse would update once per second, and the machine crashed
on killing X. All other attempts, Linux has crashed instantly as soon
as I run glxgears.

Linux is completely crashed in these cases, and won't even respond to
SysRq.
