[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 459639] Re: [Karmic] X server starts randomly in failsafe when starting from cold boot
I found the reason for this behavior. It is a bug in teh upstart script /etc/init/gdm.conf Inside the script there is a test which dm should be started. If not gdm it exits, but it exits with EXIT_STATUS=1, which then triggers the start of the failsafe session. I append a patch for gdm.conf which solves the problem. Also kdm.conf has the very same bug and should be patched too. Sincerly, Klaus ** Attachment added: gdm.conf.patch http://launchpadlibrarian.net/36567645/gdm.conf.patch ** Package changed: xorg-server (Ubuntu) = gdm (Ubuntu) -- [Karmic] X server starts randomly in failsafe when starting from cold boot https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/459639 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg-server in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 494064] [NEW] X leaks memory while team fortress 2 is running in wine

Here's some examples from top Just after restarting X, and starting TF2: PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEMTIME+ COMMAND 18952 cshadowr 20 0 3440m 696m 45m R 16 8.7 0:33.55 hl2.exe 16685 root 20 0 694m 85m 22m S0 1.1 0:37.16 Xorg After leaving it overnight: PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEMTIME+ COMMAND 18952 cshadowr 20 0 3367m 696m 45m S 15 8.7 97:40.81 hl2.exe 16685 root 20 0 1907m 1.3g 23m S0 16.2 12:16.79 Xorg I have 8GB of RAM, so 16.2% is about 1.3GB of RAM for Xorg. On occasions i've seen it go up to 80, 90%, making the computer eventually just freeze. Closing team fortress 2 does not free the memory and X still leaks regardless of if compiz is running. I know that it may be team fortress 2, wine, or X that is causing the problem. But as it's X that is actually leaking, i figured i would file a bug against X. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 490922] Re: Garbled screen after updating x11-common
I can confirm the same problem on my ThinkPad W500 using the internal Intel graphics. After an upgrade to the latest version of x11-common, the X11 server becomes unusable when started. Restarting (even after removing batteries and AC adapter) does not solve the problem. Going to a console login is not possible, since the graphics output is completely garbled. SSH to the system remained possible, so that I have been able to downgrade to 7.4+3ubuntu7. Since that, the system again works as it should. The importance of this bug should be set to the highest priority, since this bug makes a system unusable. ** Changed in: xorg-server Status: New = Confirmed -- Garbled screen after updating x11-common https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/490922 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

1: When Kubuntu usplash is loading, the screen becomes black before the end of the loading, sometimes there's a little flash on the screen, then my monitor says : there's no signal. A window appears with : Ubuntu is running in low graphics mode. Your screen, graphics card, and input device settings could not be detected correctly. You will need to configure these yourself. When i press ok, there's different choices (create a new xorg conf, backup confi). If i choose : open console, sometimes there is a black screen, sometimes the login window appears and i can use Kubuntu. ** Attachment added: grub.cfg http://launchpadlibrarian.net/36598949/grub.cfg -- xorg crashes at start with nvidia drivers. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 494166] [NEW] Nvidia-glx is removed by a new xorg 7.5 [lucid]
You have been subscribed to a public bug: When trying to install the new xorg 7.5 / xserver 1.7 lucid is going to uninstall nvidia-glx. This in turn means no Nvidia proprietary drivers. This is due to the fact that the package xserver-xorg-core_1.7.2-2ubuntu2_amd64.deb conflicts with the virtual package xserver-xorg-video-5 and the package nvidia-glx-185_185.18.36-0ubuntu9_amd64.deb provides the very same package xserver-xorg-video-5. It should provide xserver-xorg-video-6, just like the new nv driver does: xserver-xorg-video-nv_2.1.15-1ubuntu1_amd64.deb This is a big problem as lucid alfa1 is about to be released. Nvidia graphic cards are quite common among linux users. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 491483] Re: Since failsafe-x was enabled in karmic it starts if gdm is disabled and kdm is used. (low graphics mode error)
I also have just tried out the proposed gdm fix and am all up and running again. Thanks to all who have helped with this one. My situation was Ubuntu install where I added kubuntu-desktop and chose kdm, hence gdm and kdm co-resident. As laptop had intel graphics I got as others with intel graphics have commented only garbled console and no X. Initial workaround for me was to remove the splash option in grub interactively. But now all working fine. Thanks again. -- Since failsafe-x was enabled in karmic it starts if gdm is disabled and kdm is used.
