[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 459639] Re: [Karmic] X server starts randomly in failsafe when starting from cold boot

2009-12-08 Thread Klaus Steinberger
I found the reason for this behavior. It is a bug in teh upstart script
/etc/init/gdm.conf

Inside the script there is a test which dm should be started. If not gdm
it exits, but it exits with EXIT_STATUS=1, which then triggers the start
of the failsafe session.

I append a patch for gdm.conf which solves the problem. Also kdm.conf
has the very same bug and should be patched too.

Sincerly,
Klaus

** Package changed: xorg-server (Ubuntu) = gdm (Ubuntu)

The inital bug was afaik present before failsafe-x enabling. With the
last update the fails went up to 100% and the symptoms changed
somewhat, so thats when the GDM problem showed.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 493768] Re: update from 9.10 to 10.04 via update manager leaves system un bootable

2009-12-08 Thread Bryce Harrington
Hi bigdavesr,

Please attach the output of `lspci -vvnn` and `dmesg`, and attach your
/var/log/Xorg.0.log (and maybe Xorg.0.log.old) file from after reproducing this
issue. If you're using a custom /etc/X11/xorg.conf please attach that as well.

[This is an automated message. Apologies if it has reached you

Note that your system uses syslog. All of kdm's internally generated messages

Surprise, with the new GDM package I have a usable notebook again. It
seems, the patch does what it should. Thank you for all the help. But I
think, such a bug should be found before so many users get an unusable
system.

Thanks

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 494064] [NEW] X leaks memory while team fortress 2 is running in wine

2009-12-08 Thread CShadowRun
Public bug reported:

While i have team fortress 2 running, even if it's just sitting idle at
the menu, X continually leaks memory. Here's some examples from top

Just after restarting X, and starting TF2:
PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEMTIME+ COMMAND
18952 cshadowr 20 0 3440m 696m 45m R 16 8.7 0:33.55 hl2.exe
16685 root 20 0 694m 85m 22m S0 1.1 0:37.16 Xorg

After leaving it overnight:
PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEMTIME+ COMMAND
18952 cshadowr 20 0 3367m 696m 45m S 15 8.7 97:40.81 hl2.exe
16685 root 20 0 1907m 1.3g 23m S0 16.2 12:16.79 Xorg

I have 8GB of RAM, so 16.2% is about 1.3GB of RAM for Xorg. On occasions
i've seen it go up to 80, 90%, making the computer eventually just
freeze.

Closing team fortress 2 does not free the memory and X still leaks
regardless of if compiz is running.

I know that it may be team fortress 2, wine, or X that is causing the
problem. But as it's X that is actually leaking, i figured i would file
a bug against X.

Thanks :)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 353126] Re: Compiz / vnc screen refresh with nvidia-restricted driver/VirtualBox/ATI fglrx driver using X.org prior to release 7.5

2009-12-08 Thread Agustin
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: compiz

- When using the nvidia-restricted driver and compiz desktop effects the
- vnc server will not refresh the screen. This is being caused by the
- xserver not getting damaged by the nvidia-restricted drivers. Linked
- bugs confirm this is not an issue on intel chipsets or nv driver.

  Steps to reproduce:
- Enable desktop-effects (default) with nvidia-restricted driver

+ Enable desktop-effects (default) with nvidia-restricted, virtualBox's display

+ Enable remote desktop

  Results:

are no updates to the screen.
+ You see a screen snapshot of your desktop but if you click a menu item there
are no updates to the screen.
  Notes:
If you close and restart the vnc session, you get an updated snapshot but
still no refreshes.

  Workarounds:
Use the -noxdamage argument with vncviewer. This is really inefficient and
bandwidth hungry since the whole screen refreshes.
- Kill compiz and use a different wm (metacity).

This bug has been confirmed by many others with linked reports. Might be
an issue with xorg since there is a report of ATI drivers with similar

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 490922] Re: Garbled screen after updating x11-common

2009-12-08 Thread Thomas Dreibholz
I can confirm the same problem on my ThinkPad W500 using the internal
Intel graphics. After an upgrade to the latest version of x11-common,
the X11 server becomes unusable when started. Restarting (even after
removing batteries and AC adapter) does not solve the problem. Going to
a console login is not possible, since the graphics output is completely
garbled. SSH to the system remained possible, so that I have been able
to downgrade to 7.4+3ubuntu7. Since that, the system again works as it
should.

The importance of this bug should be set to the highest priority, since
this bug makes a system unusable.

keys. This works unless a modifier such as alt is also pushed after fn in which
case
they always control brightness.

This only happens if you push the fn key then alt. If alt is pushed
first the behavior is as expected.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 493707] Re: [Q45] Flickering corruption with KMS and DVI output

2009-12-08 Thread Geir Ove Myhr
It turns out that the corruption does not occur when the 2007FP
monitor is replaced by a 2001FP. It is not, however, that particular
2007FP which is broken, since I have tested two different ones. I'm
attaching relevant log files for the 2001FP session.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 360806] Re: [RC410] monitor sometimes powers down at startup

I am also getting this bug.
I have karmic and the latest driver packages as I have added
https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/drivers-only to my repository.

Sometimes my monitor just turns off while booting up, then I have to restart.
I never tried xfix considering that I don't have any xorg.conf

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 493384] Re: xorg crashes at start with nvidia drivers. Karmic Koala. Nvidia Drivers.

2009-12-08 Thread Julien Soubielle
1: When Kubuntu usplash is loading, the screen becomes black before the
end of the loading, sometimes there's a little flash on the screen, then my
monitor says : there's no signal.

A window appears with : Ubuntu is running in low graphics mode. Your
screen, graphics card, and input device settings could not be detected
correctly. You will need to configure these yourself.

When i press ok, there's different choices (create a new xorg conf, backup
confi). If i choose : open console, sometimes there is a black screen,
sometimes the login window appears and i can use Kubuntu.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 494166] [NEW] Nvidia-glx is removed by a new xorg 7.5 [lucid]

2009-12-08 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

When trying to install the new xorg 7.5 / xserver 1.7 lucid is going to
uninstall nvidia-glx.
This in turn means no Nvidia proprietary drivers.

This is due to the fact that the package
xserver-xorg-core_1.7.2-2ubuntu2_amd64.deb
conflicts with the virtual package xserver-xorg-video-5
and the package nvidia-glx-185_185.18.36-0ubuntu9_amd64.deb
provides the very same package xserver-xorg-video-5.
It should provide xserver-xorg-video-6, just like the new nv driver does:
xserver-xorg-video-nv_2.1.15-1ubuntu1_amd64.deb

This is a big problem as lucid alfa1 is about to be released.
Nvidia graphic cards are quite common among linux users.

Lucid ubuntu 10.04 pre-alfa1_amd64, fully updated
xserver-xorg 2:1.72-2ubuntu2
nvidia-glx 185.18.36-0ubuntu9

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 494167] [NEW] Karmic going into low graphics mode after latest updates

2009-12-08 Thread Thiago Galesi
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

After applying the latest updates to my Kubuntu installation, Xorg
stopped working

It would complain about going into low graphics mode but then going
into low graphics mode would not work

It would also show this message: (EE) Microsoft Comfort Curve Keyboard 2000:
failed to initialise for
relative axes. but this is a false indication, no error is actually shown in
the logs if the keyboard is umplugged but Xorg malfunctions in the same way

If I edit xorg.conf to use the vesa driver, it will complain about going
into low graphics mode but then going into rescue mode works. (with
vesa graphics as expected)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 494180] [NEW] Third level keys do not work for apple keyoard layouts.

2009-12-08 Thread michael
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

Binary package hint: xorg

Description: Ubuntu 9.10
Release: 9.10

xorg:
  Installed: 1:7.4+3ubuntu10
  Candidate: 1:7.4+3ubuntu10
  Version table:
 *** 1:7.4+3ubuntu10 0
500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com karmic-updates/main Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
 1:7.4+3ubuntu7 0
500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com karmic/main Packages

The third level key on my macbook pro does nothing expect produce a erro sign
for one key if the layout is set to any of fallowing:
  apple_laptop -- Labled Apple Laptop
  macbook78 -- Labeled Macbook/MacbookPro
  macbook79 -- Labeled Macbook/MacbookPro (Intl)

This is incorrect behavior which does not correspond to either windows or mac
os x keyboard handling on these machines.
Setting the layout to pc105 -- Generic 105-key (Intl) produces the correct
results.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 491483] Re: Since failsafe-x was enabled in karmic it starts if gdm is disabled and kdm is used. (low graphics mode error)

2009-12-08 Thread Philip Guyton
I also have just tried out the proposed gdm fix and am all up and
running again. Thanks to all who have helped with this one. My
situation was Ubuntu install where I added kubuntu-desktop and chose
kdm, hence gdm and kdm co-resident. As laptop had intel graphics I got
as others with intel graphics have commented only garbled console and no
X. Initial workaround for me was to remove the splash option in grub
interactively. But now all working fine. Thanks again.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 483113] Re: Super user key shortcut does not work (=get captured) when you try to use it in System -- Preferences -- Keyboard Shortcuts

2009-12-08 Thread s3a
Given that no one answered my question, enough time passed for Debian
Squeeze to update its packages from sid so I can now open the keyboard
shortcut preferences window but I still can't use either one of my super
user keys as my open a terminal shortcut.

I attached my /var/log/Xorg.0.log and my /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old files
as a .odt file.

** Attachment added: /var/log/Xorg.0.log and /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old contents
