[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 446632] Re: blender-bin crashed with SIGSEGV in GPU_state_init()
The fix for this bug should now be included in Lucid, so I'm closing this bug report. For the other crashes you are experiencing with blender 2.5, this bug report should serve as a model for a new bug report. mistr has written up how to git-bisect mesa in order to find the bad commit at [1] . Our experience with this bug is that once the triggering commit is found, upstream can fix it quickly. Of course it is possible that the crashes with 2.5 are not due to mesa but an ati driver or something else, but that should be clear from the full backtrace. The hangs you are experiencing may be a GPU freeze (see [2]) or a kernel problem. Also in this case, a bisect is usually what is needed to resolve the problem (but possibly of the linux kernel or the ati driver). This should also be reported in a new bug report. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 501018] [NEW] LCD backlight won't stay off
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg Currently on lucid beta, also experienced this on karmic for sure and possibly earlier. Gnome's screensaver is off, and power management is set to turn off the monitor after ten minutes. xset dpms force off turns off the screen and backlight for approximately a minute, before the display turns back on. Seemingly randomly, the 10 minute timer only blanks the screen rather than also turning off the backlight. This occurs under metacity and compiz. This is a single lcd on an intel-video laptop; I also see seemingly identical symptom on two desktops with nvidia video cards running dual- head desktops under both metacity and compiz (proprietary driver, under karmic and jaunty), and on a singleheaded radeon 9250 (open driver, karmic), (1) where the display's may be sit for days without turning off the backlight despite the power options being configured, (2) xset dpms force off turning the backlight off, and then back on to a full display after a minute or so. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 456902] Re: [i845G] Karmic stops responding a few minutes after log in
I have compiled three Ubuntu Jaunty kernel packages based on Brian Rogers' findings upstream at made them available at http://www.kvante.info/845Gfreeze/ . They may also work in Karmic, but I'm not sure. If you have the same problem as Brian, 2.6.30-freezetest1 should work without the freezes and 2.6.30-freezetest9 should freeze. I also included another kernel, 2.6.30-freezetest8, which is the same as freezetest9 except the last (and suspicious) commit is not included. If 2.6.30-freezetest8 doesn't freeze and 2.6.30-freezetest9 does, we know what commit triggers the problem and upstream can hopefully use that to fix this bug. If freezetest8 also freezes there is some more bisecting to do. In order to test the kernels, it is enough to download the linux- image*.deb packages. (the linux-headers packages are not necessary for testing). They install side-by-side with the each other and the other packages on your system, so you can download all three to a folder and do an `dpkg -i linux-image*.deb`. You can then choose which kernel to test in the Grub boot menu. When you are done testing you may remove the test kernels with `dpkg -P linux-image-2.6.30-freezetest1 linux- image-2.6.30-freezetest8 linux-image-2.6.30-freezetest9`. I may set up a wiki page for reporting test results, but for now feel free to report the results in a comment here. -- [i845G] Karmic stops responding a few minutes after log in https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/456902 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is the registrant for xf86-video-intel. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 447892] Re: [i855GM] Freeze shortly after X startup on Intel i855
I have compiled three Ubuntu Jaunty kernel packages based on Brian Rogers' findings upstream for bug 456902 (similar to this but for 845G chipset) and made them available at http://www.kvante.info/845Gfreeze/ . They may also work in Karmic, but I'm not sure. This may turn out to be the same problem as bug 456902, and if it is the freezetest1 kernel should not trigger the freezes, while the freezetest9 kernel should. I have also made freezetest8 which is the commit before freezetest9. If this works and freezetest9 doesn't, we know what the bad commit is and upstream can hopefully use that to fix this bug. If freezetest8 also freezes there is some more bisecting to do. In order to test the kernels, it is enough to download the linux- image*.deb packages. (the linux-headers packages are not necessary for testing). [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 361456] Re: [RS690] fglrx HDMI overscan in both 720p and 1080p modes
Despite the bug being closed, i hope I can bring some new light on this. I've obtained a new display today; Samsung SyncMaster P2450 - 1920x1080. It replaces an older 1920x1200 display. The new display has native HDMI, the older only had DVI-D, and i used it with an HDMI-to-DVI adapter to make it work, but it worked fine. My gfx card is a Radeon HD4650, likewise with a native HDMI port. After some unrelated bugs with usplash, I've run my head into this - that the edges of the screen are cut off. Mind, this is not a TV display, but a regular PC display. After pulling out some newly grown grey hairs, I succumbed to installing the ATI fglrx drivers, and discovered that the screen cutoff is related to overscanning (set in Display Settings Scaling Options). Setting it to a low value (underscanning) makes the entire desktop vibsible, but making it match the screen edges precisely seems impossible. There is still the problem that even though I can line the desktop up mostly well witht he screen edges, the pixels still seem blurred, and this is unaceptable. Uninstalling fglrx reverts the overscan settign back to max, cutting off the screen edges again. Since Bryce H. asked for a triage 5 minths ago with the recently updated drivers then, I'd assume that the bug is not fixed. I'll try to be of assistance if more needs to be done. - p -- [RS690] fglrx HDMI overscan in both 720p and 1080p modes https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/361456 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to fglrx-installer in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

1. Running the installer in Safe graphics mode seems not only to run the installer in safe graphics mode, but also to install either karmic or lucid alpha in a safe graphics mode in which the freezes don't occur. Some packages, like Gnometris (Quatropassel in Luicd) behave strangely in safe graphics mode, to an extent that makes them unuseable. Other are hardly affected. 2. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 501099] [NEW] system hangs when using dual head and fglrx
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg-driver-fglrx System randomly hangs when using dual monitors. X server becomes completely unresponsive, unable to switch to tty (ctrl+alt+f1). Strangely, if there was audio playing, it continues fine. The hang usually occurs when watching video on one screen and doing something else on the other. I have repeated the crash using VLC and Totem. The hang has also occured when running a virtual machine one one head and something else on the other. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 501064] Re: nvidia-glx-71 a.k.a. nvidia-legacy not longer in repository
Unfortunately Nvidia didn't update their driver 71.xx to add the support for recent releases of the xserver that Ubuntu uses. There is nothing we can do to solve this problem because the driver is proprietary and we don't have access to its source code. We plan on replacing the driver with the open source nouveau driver which (in the future) will support 3D acceleration. ** Changed in: nvidia-graphics-drivers-71 (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed = Won't Fix -- nvidia-glx-71 a.k.a. nvidia-legacy not longer in repository https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/501064 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to nvidia-graphics-drivers-71 in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 456902] Re: [i845G] Karmic stops responding a few minutes after log in
On Mon, Dec 28, 2009 at 1:30 PM, Mark Ellse wrote: 1. You can use the alternate CD to install, so that the installer doesn't start X at all. 2. Anyone know of a way, with Karmic or Luicid, to invoke safe graphics mode on bootup of an installed system so that the system is live long enough to do the kernal testing suggested by Geir? You can boot into recovery mode from the Grub boot menu. If you already have downloaded the files you can choose root shell from the recovery menu. If you need to download them, you may choose netroot (but then you may need ethernet instead of wireless). The easiest way to test is probably to use Jaunty. It should not have these freeze problems with the standard kernel. You can then install the kernels without problems and then boot the test kernels to check if the system freezes.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 501144] [NEW] [HD3870] black flicker on login, starting totem, starting app with wine, games (opengl?), WITHOUT compiz
Public bug reported: ubuntu version: Ubuntu 9.10 (doesn't really matter, have this bug since 8.04) fglrx version: 2:8.681-0ubuntu1 After having read many reports about flickering when compiz is enabled (and my problems with it) I completely uninstalled it.
