[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 426582] Re: (32MB) certain windows drawn garbled when XAA is used

2010-01-02 Thread jtniehof
This is still present in Lucid Alpha 1. Bug #416001 appears to be the
same; unfortunately both it and this bug have significant activity so
neither one is easily marked duplicate. See also bug #429251, which
seems to be related.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 477256] Re: [i855] Xserver freezing on Toshiba Satellite A10 (Intel 82852/855GM)

2010-01-02 Thread Irihapeti
Having tested the kernels you compiled for Olie, I can confirm that I am
getting the freeze on 600, 799 and 800, but not 599.

It may simply be that I didn't test the 2.6.31.2 kernel for long enough
- it sometimes takes an hour or so before I get a freeze.

I'm about to install Lucid on the spare partition and see how that
behaves.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 502485] [NEW] [Radeon Xpress 200M] white screen after VT switch with VESA driver

2010-01-02 Thread David Tombs
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-vesa

I'm currently running X with the VESA driver while debugging a suspend
issue, and came across a freeze in the VESA driver on my hardware.

Steps to reproduce:
1) Boot to login screen (gdm) using VESA driver
2) Switch to VT1 (Ctrl+Alt+F1) and back to VT7 8 times.
3) Try to switch to VT1 again, screen freezes and fades to white. Machine does
not respond to ping.

I have tried this over and over again, it always freezes on the 9th
attempt, no more, no less. Also, putting the machine in suspend can
trigger it if I have already switched VT's 8 times, otherwise a
suspend/resume cycle seems to reset the GPU so that I can successfully
switch another 8 times! Pretty weird bug.

Please let me know if I can provide any more information.

PS: Ignore the Xorg log attached by apport, it's from a new session (of
course).

Thank you - that all went well - xorg.conf is now on the desktop - it
has a 'lock' symbol on it, so hope this is not an obstacle?

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 477256] Re: [i855] Xserver freezing on Toshiba Satellite A10 (Intel 82852/855GM)

2010-01-02 Thread Geir Ove Myhr
> Presumably, if 800 works, I
> don't need to test the other two?

No, that shouldn't be necessary.

> The last kernel I can use without lockup is 2.6.31.2

So that means that the freezes start at 2.6.31.3 (and we're not
talking -rc3 here...)? I find that even stranger after looking at the
changelog:
http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-2.6.31.y.git;a=shortlog;h=5eee394f24eca7d1f670ddc9d08a8d02c90e74ca

The only difference between 2.6.31.2 and 2.6.31.3 is a single patch
that fixes typos in what seems to be an unrelated part of the kernel.

Integrated Graphics Controller (with intel_agp) when I play supertux
(0.3.1d-0ubuntu1) and many other games, after some minutes, my X-Window

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 477256] Re: [i855] Xserver freezing on Toshiba Satellite A10 (Intel 82852/855GM)

2010-01-02 Thread Irihapeti
I think that these are different problems, one reason being that the
lockup I experience can sometimes take an hour to appear, whereas bug
447892 seems to cause lockups almost immediately. I can test the custom
kernels you mention and see what happens. Presumably, if 800 works, I
don't need to test the other two?

I understand your point about going through a load of trouble for
nothing, and I'd be happy to test Lucid on this laptop. As it happens, I
have a spare partition on it which I can use for Lucid without upsetting
the Karmic install.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 502445] Re: Macbook accelerometer resets mouse cursor's position

2010-01-02 Thread Kurt Litsch
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xorg

Found using the Lucid alpha 1 liveCD

This is one of the weirdest bugs I've ever seen, but the macbook 2,1's
mouse cursor is being controlled by the accelerometer, such that the
best way to use the mouse is to tilt the laptop. Whenever the laptop
moves slightly, the cursor will reset to a specific X,Y on the screen.
However, the X,Y it resets to is being determined by the accelerometer.

I've tried modprobe -r appletouch (the touchpad driver in macbooks), and
it segfaults and crashes X. modprobe appletouch does the same. It
seems to not be related to the appletouch driver though, since the
problem persisted after modprobe -r (which did work, despite the seg
fault - after restarting X, I could no longer control the cursor with
  the touchpad at all).

- I've attached dmesg, syslog, and Xorg.0.old - sorry for not using
- ubuntu-bug to report, but Xorg.0.old kept flushing after restarting x,
+ I've attached dmesg, syslog, and Xorg.0.log - sorry for not using
+ ubuntu-bug to report, but Xorg.0.log kept flushing after restarting x,
so it wouldn't contain traces from the segfault. Let me know if you
  need anything else.

This bug, while somewhat humorous, still makes Lucid useless in the
meantime and I won't be able to install until it's fixed.

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 477256] Re: [i855] Xserver freezing on Toshiba Satellite A10 (Intel 82852/855GM)

2010-01-02 Thread Geir Ove Myhr
Thank you for testing.

> The last kernel I can use without lockup is 2.6.31.2

Strange... Olie reported on bug 447892 that the last one working for
him was 2.6.31.1 and that 2.6.31.2 would freeze. It is possible that
the problems are slightly different. Could you check the kernels I
have compiled and put at http://www.kvante.info/855GMfreeze/ ? For
Olie everything up to 599-git522bb74 works without freeze and the
kernels from 600-git7abf3aa and above would freeze. Could you double
check that 600, 799, and 800 works without freeze for you? It is
entirely possible, but it means we have more work to do on this one,
and I would like to be sure before we start.

I would also really like to see some test of Lucid. It would be too
bad if it turns out that some later changes fixes this in Lucid, and
we go through a lot of trouble for nothing (it is unlikely that this
can be fixed with a Karmic update).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 447892] Re: [i855GM] Freeze shortly after X startup on Intel i855

2010-01-02 Thread Geir Ove Myhr
I have packaged some more kernels and Olie has tested and found the bad commit.
Turns out it is this one:
http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/stable/linux-2.6.31.y.git;a=commit;h=7abf3aa8294d95e3f0be375f30e8d933f874ada0

On http://www.kvante.info/855GMfreeze/ there are several test kernels. The
important ones are
  linux-image-2.6.31.1-855gmtest599-git522bb74_gomyhr1_i386.deb
02-Jan-2010 12:43 30M
  linux-image-2.6.31.1-855gmtest600-git7abf3aa_gomyhr1_i386.deb
02-Jan-2010 10:18 30M
The first (599) kernel is the last kernel without the identified commit and the
second (600) is the first with the commit. If your problem is the same as
Olie's, 599 will work without freeze and 600 will freeze.

It would be nice to get this confirmed by others, especially kalessin
who is the original reporter of this bug. If you have submitted your own
bug report, please add a comment with your results there. All (tagged)
855GM freeze bugs can be found at [1].

FYI, I still have this problem when using KDM. When I configure GDM it
works fine. Even the updates to Karmic that should affect exactly such a
case when both KDM and GDM are installed did not solve the problem for
me.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 420594] Re: [i845] xorg hang video driver 2.8.1-1ubuntu1

2010-01-02 Thread jerrylamos
Yep, froze after about an hour or so. Tried batchbuffer dump see attachment to
subsequent post.
This is 2.6.33rc2 on i845G.

Preliminary steps:

sudo apt-get install intel-gpu-tools
sudo INTEL_DEBUG=batch /etc/init.d/gdm restart

then got the hang.

I tried this:

sudo mount -t debugfs debugfs /sys/kernel/debug
datestr=$(date +%Y%m%d)
mkdir dri_debug-$datestr
sudo cp -r /sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/i915* dri_debug-$datestr
sudo intel_gpu_dump > dri_debug-$datestr/intel_gpu_dump.txt
dmesg > dri_debug-$datestr/dmesg.txt
cp /var/log/Xorg.0.log dri_debug-$datestr/
sudo cp /var/log/gdm/\:0.log dri_debug-$datestr/gdm.log
sudo tar czf dri_debug-$datestr.tgz dri_debug-$datestr/

and got:

mount: debugfs already mounted or /sys/kernel/debug busy
mount: according to mtab, none is already mounted on /sys/kernel/debug

but it did create:

je...@linux:~$ ls -l dri*
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 388052 2010-01-02 13:39 dri_debug-20100102.tgz

Of any use? Anything else needed for next hang?

to be attached on reboot of hung machine since that's where the tgz is.

Can't get gdm going from ssh or from Crtl-Alt-F1 will cycle power.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 445719] Re: [i945] another happy X freeze in karmic [i945GM]

2010-01-02 Thread Geir Ove Myhr
We have had several reports of freezes (GPU hangs) on i945 chipsets
(945G, 945GM and 945GME, all of which uses the GMA950 graphics core)
in Karmic. I would like to get some testing going so that we may
identify the cause and give upstream all the information they need
(and possibly some they do not need) so that they can fix this before
Lucid is out. I have set up a wiki page to coordinate the effort:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Lucidi945Freezes . There is a list of test
that I think will be useful in order to isolate where the problem is
and a table where you can fill in your test results. If we're lucky
there is only one underlying problem, and we will probably get
consistent test results. Otherwise, different test results may group
the problems in different categories.

I realize that doing all the tests can be quite time consuming (it
calls for tests on both Karmic and Lucid), and if you are only able to
do some of the tests it would be nice if you could fill in those cells
in the test result table.

My initial guess is that the bug is in mesa, since it seems to be
related to 3D operations. It would be nice if we could also get some
testing of different mesa versions, but I'm not aware of any that are
pre-built yet.

If you are using a Linux 2.4 kernel, please make sure
you either have configured kernel sources matching your
kernel or the correct set of kernel headers installed
on your system.

If you are using a Linux 2.6 kernel, please make sure
you have configured kernel sources matching your kernel
installed on your system. If you specified a separate
output directory using either the "KBUILD_OUTPUT" or
the "O" KBUILD parameter, make sure to specify this
directory with the SYSOUT environment variable or with
the equivalent nvidia-installer command line option.

Depending on where and how the kernel sources (or the
kernel headers) were installed, you may need to specify
their location with the SYSSRC environment variable or
the equivalent nvidia-installer command line option.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 406460] Re: [i845] xorg hang on video driver 2.8.0

2010-01-02 Thread jerrylamos
Geir, good point. A lot of water goes under the dam when running Ubuntu
development levels.

Karmic during development from late June into (I think) August had
problems on i845. Bryce had some suggestions and tried his suggestions.
Late in Karmic development a linux-image update fixed the problem for
me.

Karmic release level and updates to 2.6.31-16 I haven't had a problem.
The pc has running currently multi boot Lucid, Karmic, Jaunty,
DebianLXDE, and Slax. Only one that hangs up is Lucid.

Lucid started out O.K. for me, no surprise, early in development not
much had changed yet.

Lucid around 2.6.32-5 got black screen on boot. I do try combinations
of default, "vesa", and nomodeset in attempts to get going.

Based on your suggestions, downloaded the freeze .deb's with Karmic,
copied to Lucid, then did recovery command line dpkg -i. No luck with
them.

Decided to do a re-install in case some of the fix attempts were
clouding the issue. Even the Lucid live CD at level 2.6.32-7 boots to
black screen unless I key in an xorg.conf. The installed 2.6.32-7
booted to black screen. Recovery mode command line sudo apt-get update,
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade to 2.6.32-9 boots to black screen.

Based on your subsequent suggerstions, downloaded 2.6.32rc1 with Karmic,
copied to Lucid, then did Lucid recovery command line dpkg -i. Hooray,
it booted! Tried rc3, rc4, rc5, rc6, rc7. Each booted. 2.6.32-7 and
2.6.32-9 still boot to black screen.

Trying 2.6.33rc2 booted O.K. several times. Ran for over an hour and
then the screen froze. Command line still worked so I got ubuntu-bug
xorg apport report, Xorg.0.log, .xsession-errors. Not sure if anyone
has any use for these.

At this point I could try for a buffer trace or whatever it is called,
there is a complex Wiki procedure which I may/may not have any luck
with. ssh in from another pc, the whole bit. It's a bit complex for my
level of linux command line experience because the Wiki directions don't
match what happens on the screen. Not sure if anyone has any time to
analyze the trace anyway.

I could try some of the rc's to see if they would hang up. This is time
consuming because 2.6.33rc2 ran for over an hour before freezing screen.
At that point I'm shooting in the dark because I don't know which ones
may have had a change of interest. That could take days of my "spare"
time between shoveling snow, preparing a computer class demo of Ubuntu,
OpenSUSE, Fedora, Debian, Slax, Knoppix, usb boot, etc.

Hmmm. Thanks for your interest. Jerry

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 434177] Re: [K8M800]cant setup 1024x800 screen no VGA detected

2010-01-02 Thread Nelsson
I'm running Asus M2V-MX motherboard with K8M890CE. Ubuntu 9.10. My
problems also came after an upgrade from 9.04 to 9.10. I haven't yet
tried a clean install of 9.10.

The patchfile "mode_set.patch" gives this error:
./mode_set.patch: line 1: Index:: command not found
./mode_set.patch: line 2:
===: command
not found
./mode_set.patch: line 3: syntax error near unexpected token `('
./mode_set.patch: line 3: `--- via_crtc.c (wersja 787)'
I have tried running it in several directories after downloading the openchrome
source, but always the same result.

And two other bug reports that might be duplicates:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-openchrome/+bug/377402
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-openchrome/+bug/474151
(and.. finally, sorry for flooding to so many bugs)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 502055] Re: screen freezes after working for awhile but cursor still moves around

2010-01-02 Thread Alex Wardle
What you need to do is do what you did last time and when you have
selected 'File System' then go to the folder called 'var' then to one
called 'log' and there should be a file called Xorg.0.log. You then need
to attach this file. For the second file do the same but when you get to
'file system' click on 'etc' then 'X11' and then choose the file called
xorg.conf . To run without xorg.conf you will need to type this into the
terminal:

sudo mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf ~/Desktop/xorg.conf

This will move the xorg.conf file to your desktop which will be useful
if we need to restore it.

Hope these steps will help, Alex

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 474151] Re: [K8M800]max resolution of 800x600 on MSI k8mm-v

2010-01-02 Thread Nelsson
I'm using Asus M2V-MX -motherboard with K8M890CE, max resolution
800x600. Ubuntu 9.10. The Square Cursor bug (bug 377402) also affecting
the computer. Open Office and several other programs fail to display the
tool icons. The usability of the computer is therefore at minimum.

Option "modeSwitch" "new" or
Option "modeSwitchMethod" "new"

does not make any difference - the same bugs exist.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 227183] Re: no calibration tool

2010-01-02 Thread Peter Antoniac
That rotation issue is an old problem. Did you try to use the
calibration results with the ubuntu driver after?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 447892] Re: [i855GM] Freeze shortly after X startup on Intel i855

2010-01-02 Thread Olie
Thank you. ..490.. and ..500.. works and ..800.. freezes. That helps me
a lot since compiling one version of the kernel takes more than 12 hours
on this machine. I will start bisecting and compiling from here.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 385553] Re: Integrate NEON optimisations for armel

2010-01-02 Thread Loïc Minier
I don't think we want a new upstream version in karmic (back in karmic,
we didn't want to use an unstable upstream version -- 0.15.x -- and
0.16.x came a bit late for the karmic cycle).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 385553] Re: Integrate NEON optimisations for armel

2010-01-02 Thread Loïc Minier
I think this is fixed in lucid which has 0.16.2-1:

pixman (0.15.14-1) experimental; urgency=low

[...]
  * Enable arm simd, we can do runtime detection now.

** Changed in: pixman (Ubuntu)
   Status: Confirmed => Fix Released

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 501746] Re: KDE crash on karmic

2010-01-02 Thread dmoyne
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 419501 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/419501

As I do not know where to report my new problem I refer to add comment on this
bug hoping my bug report will be properly sorted out ; this is a very nasty bug
reported by many other persons previously :
(1) how this bug appeared :
I decided to install KDE 4.3.85 for test by upgarding from KDE 4.3.4 ; when
logging to a new KDE session after the desktop appeared until the icon of the
KMenu a balck screen with an error message about "KNotify4 segmentation fault"
(2) what I did :
as there was no way to issue a bug report with relevant dataI decided to remove
all KDE 4.3.85 and reinstall KDE 4.3.2 the currently supported version on
Karmic, but when tryng to log in to a KDE session the same problem happened.

Can you please propose me a fix ?
Thanks
