[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 502485] [NEW] [Radeon Xpress 200M] white screen after VT switch with VESA driver
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-vesa I'm currently running X with the VESA driver while debugging a suspend issue, and came across a freeze in the VESA driver on my hardware. Steps to reproduce: 1) Boot to login screen (gdm) using VESA driver 2) Switch to VT1 (Ctrl+Alt+F1) and back to VT7 8 times. 3) Try to switch to VT1 again, screen freezes and fades to white. Machine does not respond to ping. I have tried this over and over again, it always freezes on the 9th attempt, no more, no less. Also, putting the machine in suspend can trigger it if I have already switched VT's 8 times, otherwise a suspend/resume cycle seems to reset the GPU so that I can successfully switch another 8 times! Pretty weird bug. Please let me know if I can provide any more information. PS: Ignore the Xorg log attached by apport, it's from a new session (of course). I think that these are different problems, one reason being that the lockup I experience can sometimes take an hour to appear, whereas bug 447892 seems to cause lockups almost immediately. I can test the custom kernels you mention and see what happens. Presumably, if 800 works, I don't need to test the other two? ** Description changed: Binary package hint: xorg Found using the Lucid alpha 1 liveCD This is one of the weirdest bugs I've ever seen, but the macbook 2,1's mouse cursor is being controlled by the accelerometer, such that the best way to use the mouse is to tilt the laptop. For Olie everything up to 599-git522bb74 works without freeze and the kernels from 600-git7abf3aa and above would freeze. Could you double check that 600, 799, and 800 works without freeze for you? It is entirely possible, but it means we have more work to do on this one, and I would like to be sure before we start. I would also really like to see some test of Lucid. It would be too bad if it turns out that some later changes fixes this in Lucid, and we go through a lot of trouble for nothing (it is unlikely that this can be fixed with a Karmic update). -- [i855] Xserver freezing on Toshiba Satellite A10 (Intel 82852/855GM) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/477256 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

The important ones are linux-image-2.6.31.1-855gmtest599-git522bb74_gomyhr1_i386.deb 02-Jan-2010 12:43 30M linux-image-2.6.31.1-855gmtest600-git7abf3aa_gomyhr1_i386.deb 02-Jan-2010 10:18 30M The first (599) kernel is the last kernel without the identified commit and the second (600) is the first with the commit. If your problem is the same as Olie's, 599 will work without freeze and 600 will freeze. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 420594] Re: [i845] xorg hang video driver 2.8.1-1ubuntu1
Yep, froze after about an hour or so. Tried batchbuffer dump see attachment to subsequent post. This is 2.6.33rc2 on i845G. Preliminary steps: sudo apt-get install intel-gpu-tools sudo INTEL_DEBUG=batch /etc/init.d/gdm restart then got the hang. I tried this: sudo mount -t debugfs debugfs /sys/kernel/debug datestr=$(date +%Y%m%d) mkdir dri_debug-$datestr sudo cp -r /sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/i915* dri_debug-$datestr sudo intel_gpu_dump > dri_debug-$datestr/intel_gpu_dump.txt dmesg > dri_debug-$datestr/dmesg.txt cp /var/log/Xorg.0.log dri_debug-$datestr/ sudo cp /var/log/gdm/\:0.log dri_debug-$datestr/gdm.log sudo tar czf dri_debug-$datestr.tgz dri_debug-$datestr/ and got: mount: debugfs already mounted or /sys/kernel/debug busy mount: according to mtab, none is already mounted on /sys/kernel/debug but it did create: je...@linux:~$ ls -l dri* -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 388052 2010-01-02 13:39 dri_debug-20100102.tgz Of any use? Anything else needed for next hang? to be attached on reboot of hung machine since that's where the tgz is. Can't get gdm going from ssh or from Crtl-Alt-F1 will cycle power. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 445719] Re: [i945] another happy X freeze in karmic [i945GM]
We have had several reports of freezes (GPU hangs) on i945 chipsets (945G, 945GM and 945GME, all of which uses the GMA950 graphics core) in Karmic. I would like to get some testing going so that we may identify the cause and give upstream all the information they need (and possibly some they do not need) so that they can fix this before Lucid is out. I have set up a wiki page to coordinate the effort: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Lucidi945Freezes . There is a list of test that I think will be useful in order to isolate where the problem is and a table where you can fill in your test results. If we're lucky there is only one underlying problem, and we will probably get consistent test results. Otherwise, different test results may group the problems in different categories. I realize that doing all the tests can be quite time consuming (it calls for tests on both Karmic and Lucid), and if you are only able to do some of the tests it would be nice if you could fill in those cells in the test result table. My initial guess is that the bug is in mesa, since it seems to be related to 3D operations. It would be nice if we could also get some testing of different mesa versions, but I'm not aware of any that are pre-built yet. ** Tags added: 945gm freeze -- [i945] another happy X freeze in karmic [i945GM] https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/445719 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 406460] Re: [i845] xorg hang on video driver 2.8.0
Geir, good point. A lot of water goes under the dam when running Ubuntu development levels. Karmic during development from late June into (I think) August had problems on i845. Bryce had some suggestions and tried his suggestions. Late in Karmic development a linux-image update fixed the problem for me. Karmic release level and updates to 2.6.31-16 I haven't had a problem. The pc has running currently multi boot Lucid, Karmic, Jaunty, DebianLXDE, and Slax. Only one that hangs up is Lucid. Lucid started out O.K. for me, no surprise, early in development not much had changed yet. Lucid around 2.6.32-5 got black screen on boot. I do try combinations of default, "vesa", and nomodeset in attempts to get going. Based on your suggestions, downloaded the freeze .deb's with Karmic, copied to Lucid, then did recovery command line dpkg -i. No luck with them. Decided to do a re-install in case some of the fix attempts were clouding the issue. Even the Lucid live CD at level 2.6.32-7 boots to black screen unless I key in an xorg.conf. The installed 2.6.32-7 booted to black screen. Recovery mode command line sudo apt-get update, sudo apt-get dist-upgrade to 2.6.32-9 boots to black screen. Based on your subsequent suggerstions, downloaded 2.6.32rc1 with Karmic, copied to Lucid, then did Lucid recovery command line dpkg -i. Hooray, it booted! Tried rc3, rc4, rc5, rc6, rc7. Each booted. 2.6.32-7 and 2.6.32-9 still boot to black screen. Trying 2.6.33rc2 booted O.K. several times. Ran for over an hour and then the screen froze. Command line still worked so I got ubuntu-bug xorg apport report, Xorg.0.log, .xsession-errors. Not sure if anyone has any use for these. At this point I could try for a buffer trace or whatever it is called, there is a complex Wiki procedure which I may/may not have any luck with. ssh in from another pc, the whole bit. It's a bit complex for my level of linux command line experience because the Wiki directions don't match what happens on the screen. Not sure if anyone has any time to analyze the trace anyway. I could try some of the rc's to see if they would hang up. This is time consuming because 2.6.33rc2 ran for over an hour before freezing screen. At that point I'm shooting in the dark because I don't know which ones may have had a change of interest. That could take days of my "spare" time between shoveling snow, preparing a computer class demo of Ubuntu, OpenSUSE, Fedora, Debian, Slax, Knoppix, usb boot, etc. Hmmm. Thanks for your interest. I'm running Asus M2V-MX motherboard with K8M890CE. Ubuntu 9.10. My problems also came after an upgrade from 9.04 to 9.10. I haven't yet tried a clean install of 9.10. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 502055] Re: screen freezes after working for awhile but cursor still moves around
What you need to do is do what you did last time and when you have selected 'File System' then go to the folder called 'var' then to one called 'log' and there should be a file called Xorg.0.log. You then need to attach this file. For the second file do the same but when you get to 'file system' click on 'etc' then 'X11' and then choose the file called xorg.conf . To run without xorg.conf you will need to type this into the terminal: sudo mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf ~/Desktop/xorg.conf This will move the xorg.conf file to your desktop which will be useful if we need to restore it. Hope these steps will help, Alex -- screen freezes after working for awhile but cursor still moves around https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/502055 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg-server in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
