[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 456902] Re: [i845G] Karmic stops responding a few minutes after log in

2010-01-06 Thread Geir Ove Myhr
The Xorg driver in Jaunty supports both EXA and UXA AccelMethods, and
EXA was the default in Jaunty. Which one do you use for testing? In
later versions, only UXA is supported, so that should be chosen for the
testing as well.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 494627] Re: nv driver crashing with segmentation fault in libpthread.so.0

2010-01-06 Thread Michael Vogt
Reopening, the crash is fixed with the patch but it turns out that the
colors are all wrong (just as Aaron wrote in his mail). I don't really
know why it worked well for me in my testing yesterday, but today the
colors are all wrong.

I think the best fix is to revert my patch and fix it in the xserver
itself, I attach a patch for this.

This patch for xserver-core fixed the crash for me. The colors are also
correct (when reverting the stub gamme_set back to NULL) because xorg
uses the old-sytle colormap code in this case.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 298422] Re: [i945] [SVideo] (Needs 2.7.0) TV Format changes don't work

2010-01-06 Thread Steffen
I am also using karmic Koala with 2:2.9.0-1ubuntu2, and have the same
problem as Gray. I can not change the format to PAL.

When i am typing in:

xrandr --output TV1 --set mode PAL

the output is:

X Error of failed request: BadName (named color or font does not exist)
Major opcode of failed request: 149 (RANDR)
Minor opcode of failed request: 11 (RRQueryOutputProperty)
Serial number of failed request: 25
Current serial number in output stream: 25

Anyone who have have an explanation, why the works for Andreameroni, and
not for me?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 377402] Re: [K8M890]Square cursor with Ubuntu 9.04 livecd, during VNC connection

2010-01-06 Thread Bartosz
Hello Nelsson.
- resolution problem existed in 9.04 too and was solved by adding following
line to xorg.conf: HorizSync 30.0-100.0
I think your monitor was not recognized by Xorg. What model do you have? Attach
Xorg.0.log file with option HorizSync 30.0-100.0 and without it.

- missing graphics in several programs
Attach the photo/screenshot of the application that have missing graphics.

- square mouse cursor was present when upgraded to 9.04, but was fixed by a
patch (don't know which one though).
Please check which patch fixed your problems with square mouse cursor.

2010-01-06 Thread Daniel60
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 471646 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/471646

Hello,

Exactly the same issue with Kubuntu Live CD :

When I boot the karmic Koala beta Desktop CD, the KDE splash screen loops.
During the first loop all icons appear up to the [K]. Then the screen turns
black and the KDE splash screen starts over, displaying the first icon. From
now on it loops endlessly: 1st icon - black screen - 1st icon ...
Probably the X server crashes again and again.
No response to keyboard or mouse except the following keys:
Ctrl-Alt-F1 (does not display text terminal #1 as expected, but weird blocks of
color).
Ctrl-Alt-F7 returns me to the KDE splash screen loop

I think KDE won't work with my computer 'standard' chipset which is Via s3g
Unichrome IGP KM400/KN400/P4M800[S3 Unichrome]
Note that is ok with Gnome version.

I have the same issue. Used unetbootin usb flash drive to install 9.10.
Same thing happens in livecd now, first boot mouse buttons worked 90% of
installation now they don't work at all except right mouse button
randomly. Touchpad and external usb mouse do the same thing.

Acer aspire 5100.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 297143] Re: Xorg eats processor cycles while waiting for slow Internet

2010-01-06 Thread oliver
Not sure if this relates to this bug or something new, but on a fresh
install of karmic, whenever I open thunderbird, xorg almost grinds to a
halt.

Thunderbird just needs to be open, It be doing absolutely nothing (my
inbox is an IMAP box with IDLE enabled however).

Switching virtual desktops takes anywhere between 2-4 seconds! I can see
redraws of any application's UI mostly and even just typing an e-mail
message is slow and tedious.

Closing thunderbird makes my system return to normal operating speed.

(The same, though a little less slow, happens when running nxclient)

Both happen with compiz effects enabled and disabled, albeit when
disabled it's less noticable.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 300028] Re: [intrepid] Can only login using failsafe Gnome: unable to open file '/usr/share/apps/kxkb/ubuntu.xmodmap' for reading

2010-01-06 Thread Chad Miller
Hi all. I have the correct solution for you who find your Compose/Multi
key not working. The gist is that KDE put its fingers in the fray, and
when you removed some KDE program, it left behind commands in
'conffiles' that empty your modmap additions.

The /etc/X11/Xsession.d/80ubuntu-xmodmap file is created by kdebase-bin
. Make sure you can remove 'kdebase-bin' package, and its conf files.
Either of:

$ sudo dpkg -P kdebase-bin
$ apt-get remove --purge kdebase-bin

If you can rid your system of it, you may continue. If not, then this
doesn't apply to you.

(AFAICT) That conffile was somehow orphaned not long ago. Even though
you remove the package, the orphaned conffile may still exist. Check.
If '/etc/X11/Xsession.d/80ubuntu-xmodmap' still exists and

$ dpkg -S /etc/X11/Xsession.d/80ubuntu-xmodmap

says nothing owns it, then you may remove it.

After you log in next time, your compose key should work.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 432814] Re: Action for middle and right click is reversed since jaunty

2010-01-06 Thread Yuri Khan
OK, I looked a little further, here’s my understanding.

* The touchpad is first configured with xorg.conf, hal policies and the code in
xserver-xorg-input-synaptics.
* When GNOME starts, the gnome-settings-daemon kicks in. It has a mouse plugin
that resets TapButton# settings every once in a while, and on each change of
the tap_to_click gconf setting. It does that by changing the Synaptics Tap
Action property, replacing the 5th, 6th and 7th values with (0,0,0) or (1,3,2)
to disable or enable tap-to-click, respectively.
* The Synaptics Tap Action property is documented in synaptics(4): “order:
RT, RB, LT, LB, F1, F2, F3.” So, 1-finger tap is set to button 1 (left),
2-finger tap to button 3 (right), and 3-finger tap to button 2 (middle).
* The xserver-xorg-input-synaptics patch 104_always_enable_tapping.patch is
irrelevant because it would only affect the initial setup, which is overridden
by gnome-settings-daemon mouse plugin.
* The xserver-xorg-input-synaptics patch 105_correct_multifinger_click.patch is
irrelevant because it is commented out, and because it dealt with gestures like
“put 2 or 3 fingers on the touchpad and click the physical left button” rather
than “tap with 2 or 3 buttons”.
* The Jaunty version of gnome-settings-daemon does not include the tap-to-click
code, which explains why the bug appeared in Karmic.

I have created a patch for gnome-settings-daemon that adds three gconf
settings and passes their values into Synaptics Tap Action property,
and submitted it to the GNOME Bugzilla at
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=598820#c10 .

Can confirm this bug on girlfriend's father's computer upgraded from
9.04 to 9.10 - will attach Xorg logs in one moment. Having looked
through system logs I can see that various things are still working -
NetworkManager for example, disconnected from the wireless network and
then attempts to reconnect, there are still reports from PulseAudio,
Avahi et al.

2010-01-06 Thread Alex Wardle
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Please attach your X server configuration file
(/etc/X11/xorg.conf) and X server log file (/var/log/Xorg.0.log) to the
bug report as individual uncompressed file attachments using the
Attachment: box below. Could you please also try to run without any
/etc/X11/xorg.conf and let Xorg autodetect your display and video card?
When you do please also attach the /var/log/Xorg.0.log from this
attempt. Thanks in advance.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 502055] Re: screen freezes after working for awhile but cursor still moves around

2010-01-06 Thread Alex Wardle
Akria: Since this is a problem with xorg please could you open a new bug
and report your bug there. The reason this needs to be done is because
in xorg there are a lot of bugs that show the same symptoms but have
different causes therefore until we are sure that it is a duplicate it
would be useful to have it as a separate bug. Thank you

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 280805] Re: nvidia graphics driver 177.80 on geforce 8400 makes fan spin all the time

2010-01-06 Thread jpborjas
I'm running Karmic (9.10) and a Dell Latitude D630. I was running NVidia
drivers 173 and my BIOS was version A08. My fan was spinning loudly
mostly when the machine came back from suspend mode, but not
exclusively, as it would get loud at random times during the day. The
GPU temp was 60, and the cores where 38 and 37. I used one of those
pressurized air cans and cleaned the fan without opening the case (it
was very dirty). I upgraded the BIOS to A15 (latest), and upgraded the
NVidia drivers to 195.30 (latest stable). Now, I'm running a whole bunch
of processes to try to get the fan to spin loudly, and even though my
temps are GPU 72, Core0 68, Core1 67, the fan is not loud at all, and it
hasn't been for the past 30 mins, so I think the problem went away.

Can you guys post your temperatures? When you say Low or High, how much
is that? I'm trying to see what value I should set my GPU high temp
alarm.

Open Office's icons do not show up. In mine sweeper it only shows the
brown closed squares, but if Open Office is the active window and the
window is moved over minesweeper's window, the squares in minesweeper
show like they should. The cursor is the white box with random-colored
pixels on top of minesweeper's window.

I'm experiencing this same problem. If I suspend either by closing the
lid or by choosing suspend from the menu then upon resume the screen
will flicker occasionally and eventually will fill with a solid color,
usually black. The system remains completely responsive but the screen
won't update. Restarting gdm doesn't fix this. Switching between
consoles and back doesn't work.

This is on an EEE PC 1005HA running Karmic 9.10 with kernel

Hello,

Same issue here: Assertion failed in
../../../../../../../../drivers/2d/lnx/fgl/drm/kernel/hal_rs780.c at
line: 53. It was due to RAM failures (frequency too high). When issue
was solved, not more such crash. Conclusion: run memtest86+ to be sure
it does not come from a RAM issue.

Could you please also try to run without any /etc/X11/xorg.conf and let
Xorg autodetect your display and video card? When you do please also
attach the /var/log/Xorg.0.log from this attempt

I was going to state that I did not know how to run without any... but
it appears to these novice eyes (mine) that that's what my system is
already doing, hence you already have that Xorg.0.log in the first
instance. Hope this helps.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 503944] [NEW] erratic cursor movement with multi touch

2010-01-06 Thread dan
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-input-synaptics

Using Acer Aspire 5735Z.

Touchpad works fine unless it picks up 2 or more fingers which then
cause the mouse cursor to jump erratically all over the screen
constantly until it is back to 1 finger (not the same as known bug where
cursor jumps to place on release of finger)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 377402] Re: [K8M890]Square cursor with Ubuntu 9.04 livecd, during VNC connection

2010-01-06 Thread Nelsson
I've tried now several versions of openchrome-driver, including Jaunty's
0.2.903 svn 713, Karmic's 0.2.903+svn758-0ubuntu0 and 904+svn826 source
from openchrome.org. Currently using Lucid's xserver-xorg-video-
openchrome (1:0.2.904+svn812-1ubuntu1). All of the mentioned packages
give the same problems (square cursor missing graphics). I'm using
XAA, not EXA (I've heard EXA is more likely to have weird graphics
problems).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 28052] Re: Improve mouse sensitivity and acceleration settings

2010-01-06 Thread Psy[H[]
with all the tools now available in X, it would be great to have the
following properties in gnome-mouse-properties:

speed (general linear speed multiplier)
acceleration (non-linear speed modifier)
threshold (distance before acceleration)

And name them correctly, because it is misleading when threshold slider
is named sensitivity, to put it mildly.

also current visualization in g-m-p is very unhandy. Slider does not give any
useful information, nor it gives the ability to set proper values. A text field
is needed to see and modify numeral values.
For example I have to use gconf-editor to set acceleration strictly to 1 in
order to disable it, because there is no way to tell which value is set with
slider.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 477256] Re: [i855] Xserver freezing on Toshiba Satellite A10 (Intel 82852/855GM)

2010-01-06 Thread Gianfranco
I can confirm the random freeze behavior with Ubuntu 9.10 on a Toshiba
10 Satellite, just freshly installed. Started googling the problem and
found this bug report.

X freezes (gnome) from time to time and only a full power-reboot fixes
the problem. Mouse can be moved but nothing else. Can't access ttys with
Ctrl+Alt+F1 , , Sound still works (had internet radio on). Happens
regardless of programs running, sometimes none, sometimes just Firefox.

greping the logs shows a lot of render errors, but I have no idea wether

Thank you for verifying that the problem is still present in Lucid. I

When you upgrade, the old kernels are not uninstalled. That is why you
had several kernels to choose from. 2.6.32-9 should be the standard
Lucid kernel. I think the hint is called a tooltip. It's okay to use
64-bit. I have that on my laptop as well (on the test/daily-use
partition which used to have Karmic and now has Lucid, I have a 32-bit
Jaunty one for work that I set up and customised and don't want to
 change).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 502055] Re: screen freezes after working for awhile but cursor still moves around

2010-01-06 Thread Terry O'Brien
Thanks for your input Akria. I don't know why it attempts to reconnect to
wireless as it is connected permanently to broadband via ethernet cable. And I
notice when I click on the icon (installed on the top toolbar) for signing in
to hotmail, the screens shakes slightly and a flash of a green line appears
around the edges - at its worst this has appeared as a series of green line
boxes, but that hasn't happened for awhile.
I will wait to hear back before creating a new bug report.

Actually, that's awesome! That means that there is a kernel commit
that triggers this bug (this is also the case for some freezes on 845G
and 855GM that I'm troubleshooting. And since you have your standard
Jaunty kernel that works well, you may be able to help identify the
bad commit by testing some other kernels. That would be a very big
step towards resolving this bug.

 How do I
get rid of the other choices so it will just boot without stopping at
 that menu?

I assumed you install deb-packages with file names
linux-image-2.6.31-14-generic_2.6.31-14.48_i386.deb and similar to
install the extra kernels. To remove them completely from your
system, run `dpkg -P linux-image-2.6.31-14-generic` and similar. To
get a list of kernel packages installed on your system, run `dpkg -l |
grep linux-image`.

Is there some way to let me know if this bug gets fixed so I
can upgrade and so I can move up to Lucid in April? Dave

Write down the bug numbers of the bug reports on these links:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bugs?field.tag=945g%20freezefield.tags_combinator=ALL
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bugs?field.tag=945gm%20freezefield.tags_combinator=ALL
(bug reports are removed from this list as bugs get closed). Check on
them in April and see if the have beeen fixed. At least some of them
will be the same problem that you have.

To check which kernel version introduces the freezes, there are
prebuilt mainline kernels at [1], see [2] for more info. We may be
lucky that the commit that introduced freezes on either 845G or 855GM
is the same one that introduces them for you. To test that, install
the kernels with freezetest8 and freezetest9 in the filename from [3],
if freezetest8 does not freeze but freezetest9 does, the problematic
kernel change is the same as for 845G. If not, install the one with
599 and 600 in the filename from [4]. If 599 does not freeze bug 600
freezes, it's the same commit as for 855GM.

The Karmic kernel 2.6.31-14-generic corresponds to mainline kernel
2.6.31.4. See [5] for a full list.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 504064] [NEW] Garbled screen when using the nv driver in lucid, with an NVIDIA GeForce 8800GS.

2010-01-06 Thread Luke Yelavich
Public bug reported:

 affects ubuntu/xserver-xorg-video-nv

I get garbled screen colours when using an NVIDIA/XFS GeForce 8800GS
video card with the xorg nv driver in Lucid. The 190 nvidia drivers from
the nvidia-vdpau PPA work fine, although they seem to randomly reset my
machine (another bug that I haven't fully tracked down yet.) The NVIDIA
180 drivers in karmic also work fine, and do so for hours at a time
without any screen garble, which leads me to believe that this is not an
overheating problem.

The nv driver for karmic works fine with the card in question. The card
I have has 2 DVI inputs. I get garbled colours both via DVI - VGA
adapter and VGA cable to monitor, and DVI cable direct to the monitor's
DVI port. Photo taken from my phone is attached to show whats going on,
as well as lspci and xorg log. No proprietary NVIDIA drivers, either in
X/userspace, or kernelspace are installed or loaded.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 504065] [NEW] Touchpad is not detected on Philco PHN 10103

2010-01-06 Thread Nighto
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-input-synaptics

Hi there, I just bought a Philco PHN 10103 netbook. It came installed
with Mandriva 2009, which I wiped in order to install Ubuntu 9.10 i386
desktop.

However, the touchpad is not working, it is not detected.

Searching the forums for this specific model, I could find a solution at
a portuguese forum - http://ubuntuforum-pt.org/index.php?topic=59696.0 -
which suggests the following:

Create an xorg.conf by sudo X -configure

At xorg.conf, insert the following lines after the last section InputDevice:
Section InputDevice
Identifier SynapticsMouse1
Driver synaptics
Option SHMConfig on
EndSection

At the end of the file, on the section ServerLayout, add the following line:
InputDevice SynapticsMouse1 AlwaysCore

It didn't worked, however. This model is not very popular, so I don't
know what else to do. All relevant files are on pastebin:

dmesg - http://pastebin.com/f617f8709
lshal - http://pastebin.com/f156f00b3
lspci -vvnn - http://pastebin.com/f669192b9
cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log - http://pastebin.com/f5eb08644

uname -a returns

Any suggestions? I wouldn't like to use with an USB mouse.

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 28052] Re: Improve mouse sensitivity and acceleration settings

2010-01-06 Thread Bryce Harrington
Thanks for your note, and I think you have some good points.
But note that the ubuntu-x-swat team does not maintain the gnome tools,
just the underlying bits. I'd encourage you to bring your feature ideas
to the gnome-desktop team.

On Wed, Jan 06, 2010 at 10:37:06PM -, Psy[H[] wrote:
with all the tools now available in X, it would be great to have the
 following properties in gnome-mouse-properties:

 speed (general linear speed multiplier)
 acceleration (non-linear speed modifier)
 threshold (distance before acceleration)

And name them correctly, because it is misleading when threshold slider
is named sensitivity, to put it mildly.

also current visualization in g-m-p is very unhandy. Slider does not give any
useful information, nor it gives the ability to set proper values. A text
field is needed to see and modify numeral values.
For example I have to use gconf-editor to set acceleration strictly to 1 in
order to disable it, because there is no way to tell which value is set with
 slider.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 504093] [NEW] Intel GMA965 fails to detect monitor modes

2010-01-06 Thread Polaris67
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

xserver-xorg-video-intel appears to have depreciated in functionality
since 9.04 version. It no longer finds appropriate video resolutions,
restricting the output to either 640x480 or 800x600 and labels the
monitor under display as unknown. Manually setting modelines in
xorg.conf works sporadically and eventually results in a non-usable
display due to out-of-range errors, even if the settings in xorg.conf
are in range of the monitor. All resolutions were correctly detected
under 9.04, and this problem is present in both upgrades and clean
installs.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 151674] Re: compiz+nvidia: tearing in xvideo (totem/mplayer/VLC/XINE)

2010-01-06 Thread ross
I also get tearing with Compiz turned off.

Nvidia ION, Driver version 190.53, Ubuntu 9.10.

The only way I have got tearing to go away is add a section to xorg.conf
to disable compositing.

I have tried something similar to Murky's solution without success. I
didn't follow his instructions exactly though, so I might give that a
whirl and will let you know if I have any success.

Nevermind, it seems 0xf06 inexplicably stops working after a while (see
discussion on the second page of the forum link i posted before)

I have yet to try the final vga mode suggested (0x317) and am presently
seeking advice in the forum.

Also, while I am out of ideas, I'll keep myself assigned anyway...

HOWTO: Jaunty Intel Graphics Performance Guide

is probably what pfxcore is referring to. See:

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1130582

I don't remember having much luck when I was trying to follow the
suggestions; perhaps you might do better

I'm usually using lucid lynx 10.04 which isn't much different than
karmic koala 9.10 on intel performance. When it's running. Lucid is
Alpha level, unstable, and prone to booting to black screen and desktop
hangs, seems to be typical of Ubuntu development code as they try new
things.

2010-01-06 Thread HisDudeness
I read the entire Thread and came up with the exact same problem
history.

export LIBGL_DRIVERS_PATH=/usr/lib32/dri brought me one step closer,
but I guess there are further problems with 32bit libraries down the
road. I'm getting:

Unhandled exception: C++ exception(object = 0x0033fab4, type =
0x1054ceec) in 32-bit code (0x7b843d22).

now, followed by a RegisterDump and a Backtrace:

as setting the 32bit DRI get me one step further, are there any other
options at this point to set more to 32bit libs? Setting up a shell
script to export the right stuff would be manageble, I guess..

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 441565] Re: netbook-launcher crashed with SIGSEGV in radeonSwapBuffers()

2010-01-06 Thread Chris Irwin
@Tormod Volden. I had a fellow at my LUG today having this issue. He has
an R200 based chip (Radeon Mobility 9000). This is an Ubuntu Karmic
Nebook install, all updates as of today.

The updated mesa from x-swat's x-updates did not solve the issue.

The only solution we found was to create an xorg.conf file to set
NoAccel to true. It works and is stable now, but is rather extremely
slow.

What other information do you need from his machine? Any other things
you would like to try?
