[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 486502] Re: [fglrx karmic] Black screen and no response after starting X (Radeon HD3870)

2010-01-10 Thread mclaud2000
I can confirm this bug, on a HD 4830 using Ubuntu karmic AMD64 the only
driver that works for me is the catalyst 9.8 patched for the 2.6.31
kernel. I tried 9.9 through 9.12 and none of them works.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 505415] [NEW] Suspend freezes the screen on Acer Aspire One

2010-01-10 Thread Angel Guzman Maeso
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

When you suspend the netbook and then reanudate you get a freeze screen
(normaly all in a color like black, pink, blue, orange, etc) after 5 o
10 minutes. If you suspend again the same behaviour. If never suspend or
hibernate you never get this problem, but if you suspend one time, you
are lost.

I get the screen again, pressing Fn + F4 (go to suspend again) and when
reanudate the screen works. It's hard work when you suspend because the
netbook freeze the screen each 5-10 min and interrupt your work (and
network connection, then you dont upload a big file or chat well).

If you need some log, just tell me. This bug have been reported without
suspend.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 505427] [NEW] X crash when calibrating (or trying to use) touchscreen [9.10; x86_64; eGalax]

2010-01-10 Thread Herman Kuiper
Public bug reported:

When trying to calibrate (or more precise: when touching the screen for
a certain period; i.e. when moving along the edge during calibration, or
just trying to move the mouse cursor on the desktop), X crashes after a
while [Output from a calibration attempt below]. From searching on the
internet, I found reports which mentioned noapic and/or irqfixup kernel
parameters might fix the problem, but on my server they seem not to make
a difference. Seems similar to bug #155880, but from reading that, that
should've been fixed in the version I'm using?

Not sure if useful (I don't know where to a dbg-enabled version of the evtouch

This backtrace is not while calibrating, but just moving finger along screen.

Is your computer have blank screen with this option?

Attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log file.
If you can from after screen blank (or /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old after reboot).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 312756] Re: support graphics card hot switch

2010-01-10 Thread Narciso Cerezo
Hi, I didn't see the comment by Timo requesting no more DSDT.dsl attachments.
But is very disappointing for me seeing this as declined for Karmic and also
for Lucid (which means that an official solution will not be available *at
least* until October 2010).
After many years of using Ubuntu only I had to use the included Windows 7
since battery lasts 10 hours (one of the main reasons I purchased this laptop)
and also I don't have any kind of visual effects on my desktop (which means
I've lost the transparency effect that was so useful for me).
It should not be considered wishlist as it will surely drive users away from
Ubuntu :(
Hot swapping cards is not really the important thing, I would really be happy
if I could select that at boot time or before the x-session is started.
By killing the nvidia card I now have a little more battery, but it is not
enough and not a solution.

Suggestion by Aaron:
That seems wrong, you shouldn't have intermittent results like that. I
wonder if your monitor is just too slow to respond. Does increasing the
timeout in NVDACi2cInit help? You could try copying the timouts from
G80I2CInit.

I will try this when a get the chance

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 251676] Re: xorg fails to generate a working /etc/X11/xorg.conf on Compaq Armada 7800

2010-01-10 Thread Teej
Hi guys, can you test if this affects Karmic, and if so please execute
the following command, as it will automatically gather debugging
information, in a terminal:

apport-collect 251676

This will help us to find and resolve the problem. Bear in mind that you
may need to install the python-launchpadlib package from the universe
repository. Additionally, when prompted to give apport-collect
permissions for Launchpad you will need to give it at least the ability
to Change Non-Private data as it will be adding information to your
bug report. Thanks in advance!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 505545] [NEW] Kernel mode setting breaks panning on Intel Mobile GM965/GL960

2010-01-10 Thread Chetan Crasta
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

Xrandr's panning feature does not work correctly in Karmic. The mouse
pointer keeps losing its place while moving outside the boundaries of
the viewport. Because of this, certain areas of the display cannot be
reached because the mouse position has been offset (i.e. the mouse
pointer is displayed in a place different from where it should be).

The command I used to enable panning is:
xrandr --fb 4096x1600 --output LVDS1 --mode 1280x800 --panning 4096x1600

Changing the resolutions does not fix the problem.

However, disabling kernel mode setting by adding the option nomodeset to the
kernel command line in GRUB fixes this problem. I also have to change LVDS1 to
LVDS:
xrandr --fb 4096x1600 --output LVDS --mode 1280x800 --panning 4096x1600

I would like to have a panning display in Ubuntu 9.10 without resorting
to nomodeset.

2010-01-10 Thread takashi torigoe
OK.
Results are below. 2009-06-17, 18, 19 are not tested, because there are no i386
image.
From 2009-06-19a, 3D graphics performance is greatly improved.( glxgears fps
increased 500 to 2000. )
I think that, the improvement is because of direct rendering.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 505560] [NEW] boot fails after changing graphics card

2010-01-10 Thread Toni Ruottu
Public bug reported:

When I installed Ubuntu my system had an ATI graphics card. Once I got
to the desktop I used System - Administration - Hardware Drivers to
install a driver for it. Later I wanted to use an Intel graphics card,
so I disabled the ATI card from bios and enabled the Intel card instead.
When booting up the computer again it failed and got stuck in a text
console. I had no idea, why and I was worried that my Intel card was
broken, as one of my friends had got the card working without any
problems.

About a year later I read that the Intel card would support kernel mode
setting, so I gave it another try, but it was still broken. After
spending quite some time asking about the problem in various places I
finally found out that I should remove some packages related to the ATI
card. I think it was removing xorg-driver-fglrx package that finally
fixed the problem and I was able to use my Intel card.

By filing this bug I'm not hoping for a system that would revolutionize
the graphics card infrastructure of the whole Linux eco system or what
ever, but could you please change the system to a slightly more
understandable direction, so getting a new graphics card (that has been
proven to work in Ubuntu!) to work in Ubuntu would take a one day,
instead of a year. Maybe you could put a notification on first boot with
the new card For your new graphics card to work we have to remove some
stuff related to your old card. Sorry for the inconvenience. Press ok to
continue. Or something along those lines.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 504381] Re: [K8M800] Xubuntu does not display propery on Lucid alpha-1 with updates, on Averatec 3280

2010-01-10 Thread Peter Belew
Actually, the test above in #7 was done with ubuntu gnome, not xubuntu
installed.

Also, I just rebuilt the driver with the patch removed (I was able to
ssh in and do the rebuild of the driver), and ubuntu boots with the slit
screen described in bug #495553, but it does run well otherwise.

After re-installing xubuntu and updating it, I can try the patch again,
or possibly an updated patch. Possibly I'll wait until the alpha-2 ISO
appears on this coming Thursday.

2010-01-10 Thread Thomas Dickey
It's also the same bug in konsole (the developers copy from each other
of course).

The bug assumes that after writing to the 80th column that the next control will
affect the next line. It does not (per vt100 compatibility). The only thing
that
takes you to the next line is by writing printable text. Controls affect the
current position (aside from cursor-addressing, etc., of course).

Actually, Olie (bug 447892, comment #68) only reported to have
downgraded -intel and not libdrm. Irihapeti (bug 477256) tested -intel
3:2.8.1-1ubuntu3+karmic. So none of them tested exactly the same as you.
I've asked them to. If we can identify a change in libdrm and/or -intel
that triggers the freezes with recent kernels, upstream should have
plenty to work with.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 475429] Re: [i945] Intel 82945G/GZ Integrated Graphics Controller Freezes when compiz enabled

2010-01-10 Thread Geir Ove Myhr
Thank you again, Takashi. I would like to forward your bug upstream so
that more competent people than me may have a look at it. The developers
at Intel usually get happier if we supply bugs from more recent software
versions. So I'm wondering if you test Lucid (either by upgrading,
testing a LiveCD or installing on a separate partition). Then upgrade to
the xorg-edgers PPA (https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers/+archive/ppa) to
get the latest versions of everything. Finally, make the following
/etc/X11/xorg.conf:

Section Device
 Identifier my-945G
 Driver intel
 Option DebugFlushCaches 1
EndSection

If this configuration doesn't have other serious problems (sometimes
xorg-edgers contain code that are a bit too recent, in that case, use
the ppa-purge program available from that PPA to downgrade again), a
fresh batchbuffer dump may be more useful than the previous one. Also,
run `apport-collect 475492` in order to upload fresh log files here. If
the xorg-edgers PPA doesn't work well enough or you have other problems
with it, you can do the batchbuffer dump and apport-collect without it.

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 500686] Re: [i945g] freezes shortly after loading desktop

2010-01-10 Thread Geir Ove Myhr
It seems that there is something wrong with the kernel package or the
installation of them. Have you tried the suggested workaround which is
to install it again (with dpkg -i) before removing it? If you are
unsure which kernel is running at any point, the command `uname -a`
will tell you which one it is.

Since the 799 kernel did not freeze, it is most likely the commit
after that which triggers the freezes. I'll get an 800 kernel built
to verify that.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 505675] [NEW] Lid switch hangs Dell inspiron 500m with KMS and ForceEnablePipeA

2010-01-10 Thread lmv
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

In a new install of 9.10 on a Dell Inspiron 500m, suspend and hibernate work
out of the box. However, activating the lid switch produces a hung machine with
black screen and fixed pointer.

Followed the suggestions in Bug 138256, but ForceEnablePipeA true does
not affect the behavior.

Booting with the kernel options nomodeset to disable KMS does work
around the problem and the lid switch behaves correctly.

Ok, then:
1 - How to avoid the that evdev fails? Is it neccesary that fails? Why it cant
use the device?
2 - If it dont harmless, it better a warning than a error.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 462349] Re: Mono WinForms apps don't show text on menus and button

2010-01-10 Thread Olivier Bilodeau
I just created a xserver-xorg-video-intel 2.9.1 package compiled against
the current karmic xorg and pushed it into my PPA.

It's easy to install, no need to compile anything or upgrade other
packages aside from the driver itself.

You can grab the .deb and install it from the PPA or add the PPA to your
software sources.

To add the PPA to your software sources:
# sudo add-apt-repository ppa:plaxx/random-fixes
then use whatever mean you prefer to upgrade (apt-get upgrade or synaptics)

I've used the new driver for a few hours without a crash.

PPA URL: https://launchpad.net/~plaxx/+archive/random-fixes

If »Hybrid Graphics« is enabled, you can switch graphic cards by pressing a
button (Windows). Everything but the splash screen works if I boot Ubuntu,
except from switching to the nVidia card.
This is my personal experience, I'm not sure whether this applies to ThinkPad

Moritz, thank you for your answer, and sorry for hijacking the thread.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 447892] Re: [i855GM] Freeze shortly after X startup on Intel i855

2010-01-10 Thread Brian Rogers
Olie, try it with KMS enabled and any AccelMethod setting in xorg.conf
deleted. It's possible it won't freeze with that setup.

If it still freezes, also try installing this version:
https://launchpad.net/~brian-rogers/+archive/graphics-
testing/+build/1437394/+files/xserver-xorg-video-
intel_2.7.99.902+git20090720.bb300738-0ubuntu1+karmic_i386.deb

That build has had more confirmation of stability (with i845, at least)
than the newer version did, so if i855 is still unstable with that, it's
probably an independent bug.

2010-01-10 Thread jhansonxi
I have the same laptop but the touchpad didn't work at all with a new

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 477256] Re: [i855] Xserver freezing on Toshiba Satellite A10 (Intel 82852/855GM)

2010-01-10 Thread Irihapeti
I've installed those versions. After about an hour of active use, it's
locked up, but a little differently from previous freezes. I have set
the clock in the panel to display seconds, so that I can tell easily
when there's a graphics freeze, but this time the clock is still
counting seconds. However, I can't do anything with the screen other
than move the mouse.

During the time it was working, it was extremely heavy on the processor,
maxing out at 100% just about every time I scrolled something in
Firefox. Playing Freecell caused it to use over 700 MB of swap at one
point. So, not really usable, even when working - more like walking
through molasses!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 286424] Re: nvidia-settings crashes when user clicks Save To X Configuration File

2010-01-10 Thread Eddie Washburn
For a Single Head System, you are all right that the xorg.conf file can
and will work correctly if created running in Sudo or gksudo this is
true for the 180. 185. and the new 190. if you are using Ubuntu 64-Bit
9.04 and 9.10 versions.

But this only works for a single-head systems. Once you try to configure a
dual-head card or trying to activate two screens it will not save your changes
at all. Can someone please try running Ubuntu 9.10 latest version, use a
Ge-force 9500gt card and try to configure up 2 screens one for crt and the
other s-video for TV out and you will see what I mean. You cant even configure
a Twinview. The Geforce 9500gt card has 2 DVI and 1 S-video tv-out.
How do you configure a dual head system. I cant even get a clone to work,
where one screen clones the other.

2010-01-10 Thread Daniel Holbert
@Eddie:
It sounds like you've got a completely different issue from the problem
described in this bug (crashes on clicking 'save' in nvidia-settings). This bug
already has over 100 comments (and is still unfixed) -- if it turns into a grab
bag of miscellaneous nvidia-settings complaints, it will become even more
impossible for developers to read than it already is.

Please file a separate bug, or a thread on ubuntuforums.org, for your
issue.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 505359] Re: libgl1-mesa-dev installs a broken link in /usr/lib

2010-01-10 Thread Doug McMahon
Well yes there still can be an issue when building sources off of.

A series of builds of vlc 1.0.4, vlc 1.1-git and mplayer showed
vlc 1.1 is fine as things stand

Both vlc 1.0.4 and mplayer, while finding the headers, will fail to link
to libGL.so

The fix there (as things stand) is to create a new link for the
build(s), after which it can be deleted

sudo ln -s /usr/lib/mesa/libGL.so.1 /usr/lib/libGL.so

What may continue to be an issue is the update to libglu1-mesa-dev which
moved those libs inside of /usr/lib/mesa

for the moment here have reverted libglu1-mesa and libglu1-mesa-dev back
so the libs are in /usr/lib

All the builds now work correctly with opengl output

noting that these are make installs, (checkinstalls), not package
builds, in a package build of vlc 1.0.4 the libGLU.so issue was
irrelevant, libGLU.so isn't linked

As currently set up (updated libgl1-mesa-dev, reverted libglu1-mesa-dev
