[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 312756] Re: support graphics card hot switch
Hello, I also have an ASUS notebook (M51Ta-AS060C, see above for description) and also wrote to ASUS to ask them to make a new update of their BIOS including the possibility of hybrid graphic selection, so that I could deactivate the integrated graphic card and have full 3D acceleration. And they wrote me this: Dear Friend, Thank you for contacting ASUS Customer Service. My name is Shearly and it's my pleasure to help you with your problem. We doesn't support to disable the integrated graphic card in bios to use linux with 3d acceleration. By the way, we doesn't support linux OS. Thanks for your understanding. If you have any problem, please contact with me. Now that I read your message I will complain again! [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 312756] Re: support graphics card hot switch
Thanks to Narciso Cerezo comment I wrote again to ASUS: Dear Shearly Xu, I would like to complain again about this issue I had with the computer I bought from ASUS. I must tell you with all the respect that I am your customer because I bought your computer for the hardware it has, not because I had Vista inside. And I deserve some listening. The only two requests I make are: (1) Please include the possibility to select which of the two graphic cards I want to use in the BIOS (so that it is possible to disable the integrated or the discrete graphic card); and/or (2) publish specs/apis/etc so the linux community can create the appropriate patches/drivers. Thank you very much and please pass my request to someone that can listen and take some actions in ASUS or please let me contact someone else to make my request. Thanks again, rm I think it is a good idea for each of us to do the same with their notebooks vendors so that some resonance is heard about our freedom to choose what OS to use. @Narciso Cerezo: sorry I copied and pasted some of your ideas, but I think they couldn't be more representing of what I also feel and want. -- support graphics card hot switch https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/312756 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg-server in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

@rmartinez my comments here are in the public domain ;) feel free to copy them, I'm glad they were useful. I agree we all should do the same and write to the manufacturer support team. Let's wait a little for Asus to answer, but if they don't or their answer is the same, I think it could be a good idea to create some website/blog (or better use Albert Vilella's blog on the subject if he wants) to give some advice to potential buyers that want to use linux on hybrid graphics laptops. Something like a list of manufacturers with the kind of support they have (BIOS settings, public specs, drivers, etc). That way people will have more information on what to buy (and what to NOT buy) if they want to use linux. -- support graphics card hot switch https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/312756 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg-server in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 506247] Re: Compositing cannot be re-enabled after upgrade
This is also true for me! I've installed nvidia-current and nvidia-current-modialiases and resinstall xserver-xorg-core but there is an error if I launch glxinfo : $ glxinfo name of display: :0.0 Error: couldn't find RGB GLX visual or fbconfig So Compiz, Cairo-Dock with OpenGL, Blender or other tools which use GLX doesn't work. If I install nvidia-glx-195, nvidia-195-kernel-source and nvidia-195-modaliases (which were on nvidia vdpau ppa) the output of glxinfo is now correct until I reboot my computer. But after the reboot, Xorg crashes and I've to remove these beta Nvidia drivers (195). I know that this package has to be updated (bug #494166 ) but this is the only solution I find if I want to use newest drivers from deb packages. I don't have tested older drivers from repositories like the 185 yet. (these drivers has not as well adapted to my graphic chipset but I can test if you want). Well, I guess I'm talking to myself, but the problem is between the EDID of the monitor and the Ubuntu drivers for the i865 graphics controller: when I leave the monitor off during boot and grub loading, turn it on afterwards, then the monitor is recognised and fully functional. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 505915] Re: logout at resume and swap usage (suspend to ram)
I think I have found something. First, I use nvidia-173 (not 180) since I have an old FX5200. Second, the problem happened frequently with a dual screen xorg.conf (separate X screen). With a standard (single screen) configuration, the problem seems to disappear (10 resumes in a row...). I will investigate soon with twinview to see if I can have a correct dual screen setup without the logout on resume bug. I don't understand why it was related to memory and swap usage, from my observations. -- logout at resume and swap usage (suspend to ram) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/505915 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to nvidia-graphics-drivers-173 in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 420594] Re: [i845] xorg hang video driver 2.8.1-1ubuntu1
Due to an ABI change in Xorg 1.7, the older binary packages built against 1.6 won't work, so new packages have to be recompiled for 1.7. And unfortunately I wasn't able to easily compile the older driver versions on Lucid. I didn't investigate yet how much work it'd take to work around this problem, since I'm focused on the Karmic freeze issue right now, but the better solution may in fact be to roll back the X server itself to 1.6, or reinstall Karmic for testing purposes. When you say it boots to a black screen with KMS, do you mean even before X starts the system freezes? Have you tried leaving KMS on, but removing 'splash' from the command line? Does it hang right away, or when it starts X? And if it hangs starting X, what happens if you disable auto-login? Can you then get to the login screen? If you can reproduce a hang even before X starts, then we can rule out the X intel driver. It'd mean it's definitely a kernel bug. BTW, module version = 2.3.2 is referring to the input device driver, evdev. The current intel driver version in Lucid is 2.9.1. -- [i845] xorg hang video driver 2.8.1-1ubuntu1 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/420594 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 406865] Re: [GM45] 3D applications fail to run in WINE
Have you change or set some custom xorg parameters with previous attempts? Otherwise it can very well be that the build of the driver you got is indeed broken, which is not that unlikely to happen with daily builds. You can wait a few days for the next few builds to see if they fix the issue, but I'd really suggest that if you want to stick with ubuntu and have wine working to give lucid a try (alpha 2 is scheduled to be released tomorrow), which is likely to be considerably more stable than daily builds even if in alpha stage. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 502237] Re: Xorg crashes after GDM when switching users
I found today another feature: two users logged on, user A clicked Switch User, GDM appears, selected user B, entered pass, clicked ok and got returned to the same session, the one of user A :-) Tried the same again and this time session from user B crashed and got thrown back to GDM. Logged user B, switched back to A, tried switching back to B, and again got returned to user A. Returning to the same session after GDM seems to be working, the problem is switching to other users. And yes, I have to be very, very careful not to leave some applications runnning when switching users because xorg crashes on returning to that session. Mplayer, opengl apps, even flash in browser all greatly increase the chance of a crash. Had similar problem on 9.04, but there I blamed for this the fast-user-switch-applet and skipped from 8.10 directly to 9.10. And here it is again, cannot switch users. Ubuntu 8.10 works fine, tried all available nvidia drivers, it has to be some xorg based bug/feature. -- Xorg crashes after GDM when switching users https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/502237 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg-server in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 507233] [NEW] NVIDIA - Xorg crashes (empty backtrace) with segfault OR general protection in ld-2.10.1.so
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg Nvidia binary driver version 185 on a GTX260M. Crashes are seemingly random (anywhere from 30 seconds to 2 hours logged in), but always present with no backtrace in Xorg.0.log.old and either a segfault or general protection in ld-2.10.1.so. 173 driver does not crash, but is excruciatingly slow. I tested the 190 and 195 drivers, but they do not fix the problem. They have been completely removed from the system. Any help would be greatly appreciated. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 464031] Re: Cannot do screen capture of xclock window
I've now seen this bug on Fedora 12 as well. It is not a problem unless desktop effects are enabled. Without desktop effects, running xwininfo and clicking on the title bard gives the same window id as it does if you click ont he clock face. With desktop effects enabled you get two different window ids.I'm attaching two screen shots, both taken using commands like xwd -screen | convert - xxx.png xclock-face.png is the image captured by clicking only in the face of hte clock. xclock-title.png is the additional image area that is captured if the click is done in the title bar. Looks to me like the problem may be in compiz-fusion or similar component rather than in the underlying graphics driver. ** Attachment added: xclock-face.png http://launchpadlibrarian.net/37868499/xclock-face.png -- Cannot do screen capture of xclock window https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/464031 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to fglrx-installer in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 507305] [NEW] Unable to slow mouse sufficiently
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xinput I seem to be unable to slow the mouse 'speed' to a level that feels comfortable in the recent releases. In past releases of Kubuntu, I was able to remove variability of pointer movement speed depending on distance mouse distance travelled by setting threshold to zero, then adjust the speed using 'accelNum' and 'accelDenom'. This no longer seems possible, because setting the 'accel' fraction lower than 1.0 seems to have the same effect as setting it to 1.0. Using the set-ptr-feedback to set the following: accelNum is 5 accelDenom is 10 threshold is 0 results in the same movement speed as setting it to: accelNum is 10 accelDenom is 10 threshold is 0 I understand this may be an unusual way to change mouse speed, as it's always in the 'accelerated' state, but I am not aware of a way to change the base mouse speed and turn off acceleration completely. This also seems to he the only way to set the mouse speed with no acceleration in the Mouse - System Settings GUI menu. The mouse is identified as: Logitech USB Gaming Mouse id=8[XExtensionPointer] by xinput. Any clue, other than my opening a report specifically for that issue? -- Some GL apps won't run: libGLU.so.1: No such file or directory https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/506547 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to mesa in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
