Well, I guess I'm talking to myself, but the problem is between the EDID
of the monitor and the Ubuntu drivers for the i865 graphics controller:
when I leave the monitor off during boot and grub loading, turn it on
afterwards, then the monitor is recognised and fully functional. XP
does not have this problem...so this is a development bug if anyone
finds it worthy enough.

--
Monitor initially recognized in Ubuntu 9.10, but then reverts to "Unknown
Monitor" with 800x600 resolution.
