[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 494448] Re: X11 server randomly crashes after gdm upgrade

2010-01-20 Thread Geir Ove Myhr
Gilles, looking at this again, at this time I don't think we can do
anything even with a full backtrace from Karmic, since Lucid will anyway
be close by the time we could have fixed this bug. So what would
actually help is if you could test Lucid and get a full backtrace from
there if the bug is still present there.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 509186] Re: [G35] Screen Goes Black With i915 GPU Hung Render Errors

2010-01-20 Thread Geir Ove Myhr
Thank you for reporting this bug, Brian. Take a look at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/Freeze for more information
about this kind of bug and especially how to get a batchbuffer dump.
Other things that would be useful is disabling any OpenGL stuff and also
try some newer and older mainline kernels from http://kernel.ubuntu.com
/~kernel-ppa/mainline/ (see also
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/MainlineBuilds) to see if any of them
stop the freezes.

It's not a bug, but the way vt100's would work. That seems the most

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 510004] [NEW] [lucid regression] strange resume from suspend to RAM

2010-01-20 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: pm-utils

On this laptop, resume from suspend to RAM barely works under Lucid,
while it works flawlessly under Jaunty.

These are the most salient aberrations:
1) The display comes back in a strange pattern of random colors and characters.
It looks like the display is in console mode, but the screen saver seems to be
active, since if I type in my password I will later find the display unlocked.
2) To actually get to a sane display, I have found that switching between a few
virtual consoles will eventually do the trick. If I did not blindly type in my
password earlier on, I will now see the screen saver's password prompt.
3) When I finally get back to Gnome, I find that the desktop background has
changed to an irregular black-and-white pattern.
4) After resume, the machine thinks it is running on battery, so the display is
dimmed to the lowest setting, and the battery icon is displayed.

I don't find this behavior acceptable, especially since the same
function used to work perfectly on the same hardware in an earlier OS
version.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 510036] [NEW] External screens not handled correctly

2010-01-20 Thread khul
Public bug reported:

Something has changed which makes it impossible to change correctly
between different external screens.

If I boot without any external screen and then connect one, it is
recognised correctly. (In fact, it's switched on as soon as I select the
screen setting dialogue, and the window for the setting appears in the
new screen, which is not so good, in case there is something wrong with
the screen itself.) If I switch off the external screen and re-enter the
screen dialogue I only see the laptop screen, which is fine. However, if
I then connect a different external screen it seems to be identified as
the first screen I connected, and the available resolutions are not
correct. xrandr gives the same result. I also see many errors in syslog
saying unable to read EDID block and no EDID data.

Switching from kernel 2.6.31-17 to 2-6-28-17 the touchpad does not work.
However, I can log in and use the stylus for input (tablet pc). In this
case, the external screens are identified correctly if I switch between
them. So it seems my hardware works OK. (Perhaps I have some odd
setting. I recently ran scratchbox and Xephyr for the first time, and I
had to explicitly specify the DISPLAY to bluetooth-applet since no
applet appeared on the screen. However, I didn't willingly change any
settings for X and the desktop, and bluteooth-applet works fine now
without any intervention.)

I tried following the command specified just below this form to report
this bug (which I noticed just as I was about to submit), i.e. ubuntu-
bug -p xserver-xorg-core. However ubuntu-bug it tells me that the
commands -p/-P are deprecated, so I'll just submit, hoping the
automatically collected information will suffice.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 507813] Re: [i945gme] Xorg crash on an idle netbook (Intel video): [mi] EQ overflowing

2010-01-20 Thread Antti Kaihola
Upgraded my kernel to 2.6.32-10-generic #14-Ubuntu SMP. Also xserver-
xorg-input-evdev got upgraded to 1:2.3.2-3 yesterday. Now the symptoms
changed a little bit (so far only one freeze after the upgrade):

When I hit Alt-SysRq-K after the freeze, I got a hard lock-up with a
frozen mouse cursor on a black screen. All SysRq keys non-functional,

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 327673] Re: glxgears crashed with SIGSEGV due to no GLX on display :0

2010-01-20 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package apport - 1.12-0ubuntu1

---
apport (1.12-0ubuntu1) lucid; urgency=low

  * New upstream release:
- launchpad.py: Add options 'escalation_subscription' and 'escalation_tag'
for handling bugs with more than 10 duplicates.
- crashdb.conf: For Ubuntu, escalate bugs with = 10 duplicates to
ubuntu-bugcontrol and tag them with bugpattern-needed.
  (LP: #487900)
- general-hooks/generic.py: Filter out crashes on missing GLX
  (LP: #327673)
- Add bash completion script. Thanks to Philip Muškovac. (LP: #218933)
- launchpad.py: Drop APPORT_FILES whitelist for download() and instead
just filter out file extensions that we know about (*.txt and *.gz).
  (LP: #444975)
- launchpad.py: Do not put the Tags: field into the bug description, since
they are already proper tags. In download(), convert the real tags back
to the Tags: field. (LP: #505671)
- test/crash: Update expected core dump flags for changed rlimit behaviour
  in Linux 2.6.32.
- launchpad.py: Fix marking of 'checked for duplicate' for bugs with
  upstream tasks.
- launchpad.py, get_fixed_version(): Do not consider a bug as invalid just
because it has any invalid distro package task.
  * debian/local/setup-apport-retracer: Switch to lucid.
  * debian/local/setup-apport-retracer: Do not locally install python-apt and
friends, users can run apt-get install in DC dchroots now.
  * debian/local/setup-apport-retracer: Don't add the retracer PPA for now,
everything we need is in lucid.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 510311] [NEW] Touchscreen working on Lucid Alpha 2, Breaks with Recent Upgrades

2010-01-20 Thread Shaved Wookie
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

Not sure if this is a Xorg bug, a HAL bug, a devicekit bug or a kernel
bug, but here goes:

When I installed Kubuntu Lucid Alpha 2 (alternate cd) on my Dell
Latitude XT my touchscreen worked without any configuration (at least
mouse movement and clicking). It worked the next day after reboot, but
after upgrading all packages on Monday the 18'th and rebooting the
touchscreen no longer works. I'm guessing this has something to do with
the removal of HAL, but the thing that has me curious is that the
touchscreen still seems to be registering in both /dev/input/mouse1 and
/dev/input/mice. Despite this (and the touchpad, pointer nipple and usb
mouse all working) it just doesn't seem to influence the cursor at all.

By the way, by working I'm only referring to using the screen in
single touch, mouse mode, not n-trig's multitouch (although I'm looking
forward to getting that working eventually :)

Thought I should let you guys know as the touchscreens are fairly
unusual technology rapidly becoming more popular.

Let me know what other info I can provide to help.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 380741] Re: fn+f8 swich from trackpad to touchpad broken on thinkpad

2010-01-20 Thread Daniel
I can say that the Fn+F8 Button works on my new set up Lenovo ThinkPad T60 with
Karmic (64bit).
The function is that the thouchpad is switched on or off. The trackpoint always
works.

There is an other behaviour. Karmic has (standard) switched on, that if
keyboard is tipping then touchpad is unabled. This works. But in this
case the off-switched touchpad (with Fn+F8) will always switch on again
when keyboard is used. If you unable this behaviour in the mouse-menu
(touchpad), the Fn+F8 function will work like described at the
beginning.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 475429] Re: [i945] Intel 82945G/GZ Integrated Graphics Controller Freezes when compiz enabled

2010-01-20 Thread g_jen...@swbell.net
I recently upgraded from 9.04 to 9.10 and experienced the same freezing
with the same video hardware. However, I switched the window manager to
metacity, and then continued with research on compiz. When I would run
compiz --replace, there were a multitude of errors listed because it
could not find /usr/lib/libdecorations.so.0. When I looked at the files
installed by the package libdecorations0 on my machine, it showed that
/usr/lib/libdecorations.so.0 was not there. I found a different ubuntu
karmic distribution package for libdecorations0 and installed it
manually. It did have the file and installed it correctly. I then re-
ran compiz --replace and it is working fine, no freeze (its only been a
few hours though).

In doing research about Karmic, there was mention of adding a kernel
option i915.modeset=1, so i set that too. However, I don't know if that
has anything to do with it though.

This bug is about wrong settings after RESUME. If unplug and re-plug the

and we could mark this bug as duplicate of Bug #427168.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 451518] Re: [i945G] karmic: INFO: task i915/* blocked for more than 120 seconds.

2010-01-20 Thread Geir Ove Myhr
Adrian, we treat bugs on different chipsets as different bugs unless
proven otherwise. If I remember correctly, the Q35 is similar to the
965G, but it is quite different from 945G and in the vast majority of
the cases bugs on one chipset does not translate to another (even though
they may have the exact same symptoms). I missed the fact that you had
another chipset when I wrote the comment above.

On other bug reports (bug 450853 and bug 445056), people have reported
that downgrading mesa to the version in my PPA stops the freezes. It
would be nice if you (Steen) could test this as well.

2010-01-20 Thread Geir Ove Myhr
Marco, the main point of downgrading is not to find a better version
of mesa, but to try to identify when in the development cycle the
problems were introduced. So I wouldn't worry about the Blender
behaviour -- we know that a lot of bug in the Jaunty version of mesa
that were affecting blender has been fixed in the Karmic version. The
freeze is a bit more worrying, but if there is a very noticeable
difference in how often the system freezes with mesa 7.5, we may still
be able to find the point where it went from almost good to bad with
respect to the freezes. What we want is to be able to tell the upstream
developers that when they changed this or that, the frequent freezes
appeared. Usually, identifying that is half the work of resolving the
bug.

There is another confirmation at bug 450853 that downgrading to mesa 7.5
helps. The next step is to try and do some bisecting to find the bad
commit. I will come back to that.

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 475429] Re: [i945] Intel 82945G/GZ Integrated Graphics Controller Freezes when compiz enabled

2010-01-20 Thread Geir Ove Myhr
g_jensen, thank you for investigating this and sharing your results. I
think the libdecoration0 problem is different from the one reported
here, though. This is since libdecoration0 is a compiz library, and
this problem has been reported even without compiz when other OpenGL
programs are used. Looking at the lists of files at
http://packages.ubuntu.com/karmic/libdecoration0, it seems that all
packages contain the file /usr/lib/libdecoration.so.0 (not
libdecorations.so.0, but I assume you misspelled it since you
misspelled the package name).

Also, the kernel option i915.modset=1 should do nothing in Karmic
since that is already the default.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 342675] Re: [i945] Kubuntu freezes when I use the keyboard shortcut to start krunner (UXA bug)

2010-01-20 Thread Geir Ove Myhr
People are currently experiencing freezes on i945 in Karmic (and at
least one has verifed it on Lucid as well). However, I think they are
all using Gnome, and the freezes started well after this bug was
reported. It is possible that this bug has been fixed (the one leading
to freezes under KDE) while there is a new one (or more) which leads to
freezes under Gnome.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 445719] Re: [i945] another happy X freeze in karmic [i945GM]

2010-01-20 Thread Geir Ove Myhr
Thank you for the update, Steve. I'm closing this.

I have had one user confirm that his i945 freezes continue under Lucid
(bug 475429) and two Karmic users with i945 confirm that downgrading
mesa to 7.5 helps. But that (or those) bug(s) is probably different from
the one you had.

And why do I think a GPU hang can be a mesa bug? I read
http://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=24825 comment #10 from Carl
Worth, which seems to indicate that. You probably know the details
better than me, but couldn't a dri freeze be a bug in
src/mesa/drivers/dri/i915 in mesa? Or how do you see that it is kernel
level?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 508699] Re: Xorg freeze / Kernel 2.6.32-10-generic freeze

2010-01-20 Thread Thomas Schweikle
Tested the new Kernel 2.6.32-11: same as with 2.6.10: Xorg.0.log is
written, but empty --- in both cases: booting with or without having
booted windows before.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 426582] Re: (32MB) certain windows drawn garbled when XAA is used

2010-01-20 Thread mistr
I now have a definitve answer. I found the Maintanance and Service
Guide for my laptop. It reads: 32 MB of discrete video memory.

At least it shows, that lspci does not report the actual video memory,
and if the Xorg log doesn't report it either, answering this question is
non trivial.

The bug description remains valid.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 408588] Re: [i865] Low screen resolution using Ubuntu 9.10 Alpha 3, Alpha 4, and Alpha 5

2010-01-20 Thread JpJ 808
To summarize this bug up, I think there is a problem in the coding that
allows these intel graphics controllers to read the EDID information
from the monitors...I do not know if code needs to be written for each
EDID, or how the EDID is designed, but the conflict and solution would
seem to lie with the EDID to X programming structure and interface with
the video controllers. (trashanken, I suppose the before/after outputs
might be useful to the developers...that is if 8.04 LTS is working with
your TV today.)

2010-01-20 Thread Teej
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been
any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue
for you. Can you try with the latest Ubuntu release? Thanks in advance.

2010-01-20 Thread Peter Belew
I'm not sure the last Xorg.0.log was valid ... I'm going to start with a
new source tree later this evening and try again.

I ended up with X not starting the last couple of times I tried booting
- I had to start in text mode and start daemons manually.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 510141] [NEW] X screen drawn incorrectly.

2010-01-20 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Updated xserver-xorg and xserver-xorg-common from Update Manager. On restart,
part of the desktop is drawn black.
It seems to affect everything in the background such as windows, but the
foremost objects such as Docky draw fine.

I'm also running NVIDIA proprietary drivers version 190.53.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 404502] Re: [HD 4800] Installed fglrx leads to black screen

2010-01-20 Thread Jim Utter
I performed a clean install of karmic on a lennovo thinkpad t500 and the
detected radeon driver worked just fine but I thought i would try the
restricted driver. Once I installed it and restarted - all I got was a
black screen with a non-blinking cursor in the upper left. I was unable
to switch to any terminals to correct the issue.

I ended up reverting back to the ati driver with the live cd, chroot, and
following the instructions at:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/FglrxInteferesWithRadeonDriver#Problem:%20%20Need%20to%20fully%20remove%20-fglrx%20and%20reinstall%20-ati%20from%20scratch

I thought I'd report the issue but I'm no longer blocked. Kudos for a great
product. i'll stick with the non-restricted stuff.
Thanks!

jim

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 507233] Re: NVIDIA - Xorg crashes (empty backtrace) with segfault OR general protection in ld-2.10.1.so

2010-01-20 Thread Amy Wilson
Hi there, Onigion.

I doubt we will get much in the way of support, because we are being
mighty evil and using a proprietary driver (and I've seen the support
around these places; makes a dedicated supporter cringe), but alas, I am
experiencing the same problem, on the exact same config --- it is
definitely unstable on battery (I've not experienced a crash on AC
power), and one can undergo several crashes after the first (whereupon
it may or may not stop crashing).
