[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 510004] Re: [lucid regression] random graphics effects after resume from suspend to RAM

2010-02-01 Thread Per Ångström
** Summary changed:

- [lucid regression] strange resume from suspend to RAM
+ [lucid regression] random graphics effects after resume from suspend to RAM

** Description changed:

- Binary package hint: pm-utils
-
On this laptop, resume from suspend to RAM barely works under Lucid,
while it works flawlessly under Jaunty.

These are the most salient aberrations:
  1) The display comes back in a strange pattern of random colors and
characters. It looks like the display is in console mode, but the screen saver
seems to be active, since if I type in my password I will later find the
display unlocked.
  2) To actually get to a sane display, I have found that switching between a
few virtual consoles will eventually do the trick. If I did not blindly type in
my password earlier on, I will now see the screen saver's password prompt.
  3) When I finally get back to Gnome, I find that the desktop background has
changed to an irregular black-and-white pattern.
  4) After resume, the machine thinks it is running on battery, so the display
is dimmed to the lowest setting, and the battery icon is displayed.

I don't find this behavior acceptable, especially since the same
function used to work perfectly on the same hardware in an earlier OS
  version.

You can install the newest driver from the
https://launchpad.net/~xorg-edgers (DDX only repository) which has static
power management code. You can set ForceLowPowerMode in xorg.conf. You can
see more info about possible options for radeon driver using man radeon
command.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 510004] Re: [lucid regression] random graphics effects after resume from suspend to RAM

2010-02-01 Thread Christian Schürer-Waldheim
I doubt that this problem is related to the nvidia driver. I tested a
suspend from the virtual terminal (stopped X and unloaded the nvidia
module) - after resume, the monitor is black with some white rectangles
but switches to standby soon. Switching to a vt with ctrl-alt-f* does
not work. Rebooting the system with ctrl-alt-del works, though.

I have this problem on my desktop and notebook computer - both have a
nvidia card (but different ones). So maybe it is hardware related, but
not the the nvidia-binary driver itself. Suspend/resume worked on both
system without any problems in the last couple of Ubuntu releases.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 514210] Re: [I915GM] slow desktop refresh poor graphics performance

2010-02-01 Thread madbiologist
Your issue seems to be caused by something going wrong with the Direct
Rendering Manager. From your Xorg.0.log:

drmOpenDevice: node name is /dev/dri/card0
[drm] failed to load kernel module i915
(EE) intel(0): [drm] Failed to open DRM device for : No such file or directory
(EE) intel(0): Failed to become DRM master.

and later:

(WW) intel(0): DRI2: failed to open drm device

and later still:

(WW) intel(0): drmSetMaster failed: Bad file descriptor

and later still:

(II) intel(0): direct rendering: Failed
(WW) intel(0): Option NoAccel is not used

and still later:

(II) AIGLX: Screen 0 is not DRI2 capable
(II) AIGLX: Screen 0 is not DRI capable
(II) AIGLX: Loaded and initialized /usr/lib/dri/swrast_dri.so
(II) GLX: Initialized DRISWRAST GL provider for screen 0

Your system has most likely fallen-back to software rendering.

Does anybody know what caused the loading of the i915 kernel module to
fail?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 96676] Re: function keys don't work in gnome-terminal

2010-02-01 Thread NevemTeve
My last suggestion (unconditionally change environment TERM from 'xterm'
to 'xterm-vte') is a bit rude. How could I do it more nicely? If it were
rxvt or xterm, it would be the simplest:

cat ~/.Xdefaults:
XTerm.termName=xterm-vte
Rxvt.termName=xterm-vte

xrdb ~/.Xdefaults

But alas, gnome-terminal seems to not use resources, it has an own XML-
based configuration system.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 515470] [NEW] i810 kernel module doesn't load since version 2.6.31-17-generic-pae or greater

2010-02-01 Thread randomas
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

Since the sistem was updated to kernel 2.6.31-17-generic-pae or greater
(currently 2.6.31-18, and it is what was used to generate bug report), the
system (ubuntu karmic gnome) switched to using the vesa driver to to the i810
driver not loading.
As well as what the apport-bug generated, I've attached the relevant dmesg
section (gives errors about i915).

This is from the xorg.log

 (II) LoadModule: intel
(II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers//intel_drv.so
(II) Module intel: vendor=X.Org Foundation
compiled for 1.6.4, module version = 2.9.0

(II) LoadModule: i810
(WW) Warning, couldn't open module i810
(II) UnloadModule: i810
(EE) Failed to load module i810 (module does not exist, 0)
(II) LoadModule: vesa

this is what I get if I try and modprobe i810 manually:

FATAL: Error inserting i810 (/lib/modules/2.6.31-18-generic-
pae/kernel/drivers/gpu/drm/i810/i810.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or
unknown parameter (see dmesg)

and relevant dmesg
[ 4447.404830] i810: disagrees about version of symbol drm_core_get_reg_ofs
[ 4447.404838] i810: Unknown symbol drm_core_get_reg_ofs

[ 4447.406241] i810: disagrees about version of symbol drm_core_ioremap
[ 4447.406245] i810: Unknown symbol drm_core_ioremap

At the moment the work around for this is to boot into the 2.6.31-16
kernel and everything works fine, but it does seem there's been a
regression in an update. I don't have an xorg.conf file, the system
should be able (or used to be able to) select the right settings
automagically.

Hope this is fixed soon.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 266911] Re: blank screen when starting second session (tested with guest session)

2010-02-01 Thread TuxProbe
Confirming the bug still applies.. Whenever user-change / guest-session
is activated the computer deadlocks, only hard boot will make the day.
I.e., all interrups are blocked - fn + key and power button has no
effect.

Also, i've experienced similar problems when switching out from serial VT to VT
7/8 but beleive this has been fixed.
Same type of deadlock also occurs on occation while resuming from hibernation.
This occurs, I think, when monitors connected while entering hibernation mode
has been disconnected when resuming again.

Attached is the `dmesg | egrep (irq|fglrx|acpi|pci)` and my hardware
is:

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 515498] [NEW] lucid lynx xorg resume from suspend colored blocks nonresponsive

2010-02-01 Thread itismike
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

testing Lucid Lynx on a Dell Latitude D630 laptop. It worked fine with
Karmic Koala (except for the 'goes into suspend immediately after coming
out of suspend, which was fixed about a week ago), but it will not come
out of suspend successfully any more. X shows a black background with
large pixels of color, similar to a Commodore Vic 20 screen. It does
not respond to any keystrokes (ctrl-alt-f1) and forces me to power-cycle
it to reboot. Upon reboot everything is normal. I tried putting it in
suspend by closing the laptop lid and also by clicking the power icon
then selecting Suspend and had the same result. Will try `pm-suspend`
after I submit this and will follow up if it is any different. If I
don't follow-up, assume it froze upon resume again.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 515501] [NEW] Lucid 2.6.32-12 cursor invisible

2010-02-01 Thread jerrylamos
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

Lucid A2 update to 2.6.32-12 and cursor is not visible after boot.
Every time.

Linux version 2.6.32-12-generic (bui...@palmer) (gcc version 4.4.3 (Ubuntu
4.4.3-1ubuntu1) ) #16-Ubuntu SMP Wed Jan 27 18:34:19 UTC 2010
ATI Technologies Inc Radeon Mobility M7 LW [Radeon Mobility 7500]
IBM Thinkpad T40

Alt-F2 sudo gdm restart no effect.

Only way I can get going is to notice slight flicker at top of screen on
Firefox applet, move left slightly hoping the invisible cursor is on top
of System, then Preferences, Display, Alt-D for detect display, Alt-A
for apply, then keep.

No such problem with previous levels of Lucid, Karmic, Jaunty, Intrepid,
Debian, Slax, SliTaz, Fedora, SUSE, ...

Any ideas or info needed?

Jerry

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 301958] Re: [needs-packaging] no working driver for sis 671/771 video cards

2010-02-01 Thread PaulWoodhams
Have the same problem as #56. Just upgraded to 9.10 and re-installed the
package. Resolution on the laptop screen is fine but I can't get any
output on my external monitor. When I first upgraded the external
monitor worked but was unusable with the available resolutions.

Any ideas?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 515470] Re: i810 kernel module doesn't load since version 2.6.31-17-generic-pae or greater

2010-02-01 Thread Moritz Naumann
I think I am running into the same issue.

(II) LoadModule: i810
(WW) Warning, couldn't open module i810
(II) UnloadModule: i810
(EE) Failed to load module i810 (module does not exist, 0)
(II) LoadModule: vesa
(II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers//vesa_drv.so

I also run Karmic and similar hardware (Asus UL30A). I assume the driver which
X is trying to load there is /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/intel_drv.so whch
does exist (and has the same permissions as other drivers):
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 664K 2010-01-10 11:49
/usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/intel_drv.so

However, I realize the i915 module is loaded

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 294972] Re: MASTER: xorg high cpu usage, general system sluggishness

2010-02-01 Thread Jan Cablik
Dear all,
I'm using kubuntu karmic with old nvidia graphics. I was fighting with 100% CPU
usage in xorg very often. I had to install lxde as an alternative to kde, to be
able to use my computer at all.

Few days ago I have finally found my problem - the CPU hungry task was
ica. I don't know why this task is running by default in ubuntu, but
killing it always solves the problem, CPU usage drops below 2%.

the command is:
sudo killall ica

I hope this can help to others,
Jan

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 96676] Re: function keys don't work in gnome-terminal

2010-02-01 Thread Thomas Dickey
I've never come across any useful documentation from the GNOME project.
Just stuff that is targeted at nontechnical end-users.

However, the simplest fix would be setting gnome-terminal's TERM variable
to gnome, and handling the inevitable release-to-release nits with fixes
in the terminal database.

supports it, or the 640x480 mode if it doesn't. Or, I might have a
script that runs from udev whenever a VGA hotplug event is signaled, and
the script wants to figure out what monitor is plugged in first, and
then based on some heuristics, figure out what screen configuration I
want (e.g. one EDID value indicates my office monitor, which should go
above my laptop screen, and another EDID value indicates my home
monitor, which should go on the logical left).

Unfortunately, the xrandr command (or, more precisely, xrandr
--prop) enables the VGA1 output in addition to listing information
about the currently connected outputs. It would be great if there were
an option to query EDID information without causing any side-effects.
As is, this results in double flickering (first, when xrandr decides to
enable some default configuration, and second, when I manually, or my
script automatically, chooses a more appropriate mode to use).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 438346] Re: [i915gm] [jaunty, karmic] X freezes every day or so

2010-02-01 Thread Hephaestus Malleus
This exact same problem happens with me. I'm using Ubuntu Karmic,
kernel: 2.6.31-17-generic. I use an ATI Radeon X800 (Chip R420) video
card using open source drivers, and after using either GIMP or
OpenOffice the whole screen will freeze and only the mouse will move--
though nothing can be clicked. The user is forced to do restart and the
words clearing orphaned inodes are shown during the next boot-up.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 395932] Re: [i855] No Xv support for 82852/855GM (KMS bug)

2010-02-01 Thread Matteo Settenvini
This bug is still valid on Lucid. Since it's a LTS, and given the number
of people owning Intel cards, I think it'll be nice a backport of the
kernel patches needed to fix this bug. Playing a video in Totem with a
resolution above 640x480 hogs my CPU at 100% and makes anything larger
unwatchable. (P4 2.4GHz here, YMMV). Is it feasible?

Sorry for the spam: by the way, my system doesn't boot in Lucid with
nomodeset anymore (Playmouth related? It just hangs on a black screen
before starting Xorg), so no workaround is present at the moment.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 267269] Re: system GUI turn upside down when visual effects changed from none to normal

2010-02-01 Thread BavarianPH
Nvidia drivers related software (nvidia configurators)

change settings for Intel drivers. And so tell the xorg-intel

driver the wrong info.

For all NONE-Nvidia PCs, easy to fix:

If you have simple-ccsm (Simple Compizconfig settings

manager) installed:

(if not install ccsm or compizconfig-settings-manager)

1st right-click on your PC Desktop, use Tab to select,

left-click on Change Desktop Background.

Use Tab again select Visual Effects tab,

use Tab key once again select None.

(Upside down mirrored is difficult to read or select by

mouse. Tab will indicate where you are in a menu).

The Desktop will right itself.

Then use Synaptic Package Manager

(or the Terminal, for those who know how) purge

all Nvidia programs, refresh (apt-get update),

it may be a good idea to reinstall your particular

Video card software which will set configuration

back to where it should have been. Then restart compiz

select your level of Visual Effects. Problem solved!

Perhaps the Ubuntu Masters may build a fail-save,

so that wrong video info can not corrupt configs.

BavarianPH,

Ubuntu forever!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 497149] Re: Packages using DKMS should make use of /usr/lib/dkms/common.postinst

2010-02-01 Thread Anders Kaseorg
I noticed while putting together an updated package for bcmwl that the
template postinst does exit $? after running common.postinst, which
skips the rest of the package postinst including any autogenerated
#DEBHELPER# scripts.

Mario, can I get you to review this patch, which fixes that and does
some additional cleanup of the template postinst?
