Are you able to reproduce this issue easily? If so, please collect a
full backtrace - see http://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Backtracing for
directions. If not, could you describe the conditions under which the
crash tends to occur?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 526893] [NEW] xterm wrongly handles Unicode on the prompt when printing text

2010-02-24 Thread Dominik George
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xterm

xterm misinterpretes some characters and writes junk text to the
terminal under the followign conditions:

1. The prompt contains special charachters, in this test case german umlauts
2. The text printed from a command (shell built-in, program, script, etc.) does
not end with a line break

Steps to reproduce:

Start xterm or any terminal emulator relying on it (e.g. gnome-
terminal), then create or cd into a directory containing an umlaut (e.g.
Ü11). Run a command that generates a one-line output of text, e.g. echo
-n Hello.

Expecgted behaviour: The output text is printed in front of the next
line's command line prompt with the input mark behind the prompt

Current behaviour: Text is not printed, instead, parts of the prompt are
printed behind it and after the input mark

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 526533] Re: Intel gpu problems

2010-02-24 Thread Geir Ove Myhr
Thank you for taking the time to report this problem in Ubuntu Lucid.
The automatic reporting of this kind of bug is not quite mature yet, so
you may experience a bug in the bug reporting system or a bug in the
intel xorg stack. Could you upload the output of the command `dmesg` and
/var/log/Xorg.0.log from right after apport says the problem occurred?

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 526893] [NEW] xterm wrongly handles Unicode on the prompt when printing text

Sounds like a problem with one of (a) the user's configuration, or (b) the

 Steps to reproduce:

Start xterm or any terminal emulator relying on it (e.g. gnome-
terminal), then create or cd into a directory containing an umlaut (e.g.

indeed any terminal emulator

 LANG=de_DE.UTF-8
 SHELL=/bin/zsh

Is this the actual shell? If so, it should be reassigned to that
package.

zsh is the login shell, but this is about Bash (running from zsh or
native does not matter). The bug is reproducible across multiple
hosts, users, environments.

It is not related to the shell itself. The bug can be reproduced in
Bash, Dash and Csh.

The bug does not show when running in a tty, so it *is* X-related.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 526760] Re: Corrupted screen and degraded performance on Savage/IX-MV

2010-02-24 Thread Tormod Volden
I can confirm the these issues on a Savage Twister card, trying out a
fresh installation of the Lucid alpha-3 candidate. First login screen
was a small box in the middle which did not show the whole screen,
after logging in I was thrown back to login screen which now was fine. I
also got the same assertion dump in the log. Only after making an
xorg.conf with NoDRI I was able to login successfully.

2010-02-24 Thread Marcerino
I have compiled the new xserver-xorg-video-intel (ubuntu Lucid package,
based on 2.9.1) and installed it on my system, but that does not solve
the problem. So if the underlying issue is in the driver, it will still
be there in Lucid. Are there changes to xserver that may alleviate the
problem? Did you have a look at my logfiles, batch buffer dump? Does
that provide a hint?

bash (but not dash or csh as far as I recall) contains code which is

The code in bash has been the subject of occasional bug reports for
some time.

The bug does not show when running in a tty, so it *is* X-related.

gnome-terminal, konsole and xterm all are independent - it's likely that
there is a common cause for this issue which is unrelated to any of these.

You may get some insight on the problem by using script to capture the
output of the shell (to see which characters are sent to the terminal).

That may be different between the Linux console and the X applications.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 526919] [NEW] [Karmic] X crash due to xsetroot in startkde after recent update

2010-02-24 Thread Harald Sitter
Public bug reported:

This report is based on a bug hunt I did on a system maintained by
~ericbouer.

Apparently the system was setup about a week ago and after some recent
update, login was never successful and always resulted in an immediate
bounce back to KDM.

After a lot of investigation it became apparent that
  xsetroot -cursor_name left_ptr
as part of the startkde script was causing a X crash. However, the command
itself could not be used to reproduce the crash, it seems as if only the
preceding commands in startkde make it a deadly one. Removing aforementioned
line prevents the crash, re-adding it makes the crash again 100% reproducible.

Reinstalling x11-xserver-utils, which contains xsetroot, did also not
improve the situation. Only removing xsetroot from startkde makes logins
possible again.

Attached to this report you find:
* gdb-Xorg.txt - backtrace per https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Backtracing X started
with -dumbSched, otherweise trace were unsuccessful
* .xsession-errors of two different users, in one the xprop commands in
startkde were commented out (which turned out to not improve the situation)
* Xorg.0.log, Xorg.0.log.old, kdm.log, dpkg.log
* Output of dmesg and lspci -vvk

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 511001] Re: [i855] Lucid Freeze shortly after X startup

2010-02-24 Thread Geir Ove Myhr
Great! I'd like to send it upstream to the intel developers now and see
if they can get some useful information out of the batchbuffer dump. I
just wonder, which kernel exactly do you mean by 2.6.33-999? Is it from
the drm-intel git tree, from Linus' git tree, from [1], or somewhere
else? The patch (but v7) was applied to the drm-intel tree (head intel-
drm-next) two days ago [2], but if you grabbed it before then it
wouldn't have been there.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 520046] Re: [Karmic] X freezes when attaching external monitor

2010-02-24 Thread Marcerino
Some more tests show that the problem is most likely in the 'DRI'
subsystem; if I add 'option DRI Off' to my /etc/X11/xorg.conf, the
switching works. I also tried NoMTRR and AIGLX Off, as suggested here:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Troubleshooting/Freeze, but that doesn't help.
'DRI' seems to be the main culprit.

Also, the problem only occurs when switching using the 'Display' tool in
System/Preferences (i.e. when X is running). If the monitor is
connecting before logging in (during boot or during the process of
logging out and going to the login screen), the external monitor is
activated automatically and keeps working when X starts.

This problem disappeared when I logged out and the X server was
restarted.

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 516167] Re: 9.10 Desktop 64 bit live cd monitor 'out of range'

2010-02-24 Thread Berto
Hi

I've found a work-around but it doesn't remove the source problem.

I use a cordless keyboard mouse. Once replaced with a corded one, I could
navigate the Live CD to load in Safe Graphics mode.

Thanks

Sorry, can't run this using the 9.10 live cd, hence the 9.04 details...

HDD = 0 (crashed waiting for replacement) MB = GA-M68SM-S2L (BIOS updated
 recently)
Is it possible the architecture is wrong? i386 vs 64bit? I don't think so
seem to remember the alternate cd for 9.04 didn't work before.

Anyway, I have no access to any F-key functions have to wait for
automatic installation. It boots is running, I think, but the monitor dies
 so I can't see anything ;-P
'out of range' message. I know refresh rate is too high - 35.3kHz / 79Hz.
The monitor (LG W2242S) max refresh rate is 75Hz, if I remember correctly.

I've tried booting with monitor power cable unplugged 'CTRL ALT +'
repeated ad nauseum also had no effect.

 Help?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 456902] Re: [i845G] Karmic stops responding a few minutes after log in

2010-02-24 Thread Flabdablet
These boxes are all booting with nomodeset=1 kernel parameters and
1024x768 forced in xorg.conf anyway, per bug 522488.

12:2.7.0 is a doozy! Freezes in the customary fashion before even making
it to the desktop (these boxes are all set to auto-login) on four tries
out of five so far, 15 seconds after on the fifth try. Kind of amusing
to watch the spinning throbber cursor stop spinning but keep moving with
the mouse.

I'm reinstalling 2.8.0 on the 2.7.0 test box. I won't be at the school
playing with these for the next few days, unfortunately.

2010-02-24 Thread Bryce Harrington
Hi mindsweeper,

Thanks for including the attached files. Could you also include your
/var/log/Xorg.0.log (or Xorg.0.log.old) from after reproducing the issue?

Please attach the output of `lspci -vvnn` too.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 387777] Re: no power set make ati mobility hot

2010-02-24 Thread Bryce Harrington
Hi sda1986,

Please attach the output of `lspci -vvnn` and `dmesg`, and attach your
/var/log/Xorg.0.log (and maybe Xorg.0.log.old) file from after reproducing this
issue. If you're using a custom /etc/X11/xorg.conf please attach that as well.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 352353] Re: Regression: xrandr doesn't detect native resolution for external LCD

2010-02-24 Thread Bryce Harrington
Hi gpothier,

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in
it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Can you try with
the latest development release of Ubuntu? (ISO CD images are available from
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/)

If it remains an issue, could you also attach a new /var/log/Xorg.0.log?
Thanks in advance.
