[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 549727] Re: [10.04] Touchpad stops working after login

2010-05-01 Thread Ben Munro
The above fix works for me, but leaves me with a non-accelerating
pointer and unable to scroll with the touchpad.

I found another fix that works better.:

rm -rf /home/ben/.gconf/desktop/gnome/peripherals/touchpad

You need to kill the session (killall gnome-session) and log in again
after you do this. The bug keeps re-occurring and needs to be fixed
every time.

This is on a Hewlett Packard dv6 2113tx.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 522328] Re: [Test xpr-008] Lucid upgrade broke when upgrading from manually installed nvidia proprietary drivers

2010-05-01 Thread beadrifle
See https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/562565

I can confirm this error for NVIDIA Drivers (manually installed) 190.53
and 195.36.24 (the latest). I have an NVIDIA GeForce 8600GM 512 MB. I
have tried Paul's
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/562565/comments/10) and Ryan
Waldroop's methods
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/562565/comments/11) and I can
confirm that both have failed to fix the issue.

NVIDIA Driver version 173.14.22 seems to work fine so far.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 549727] Re: [10.04] Touchpad stops working after login

2010-05-01 Thread Chris Olin
Upgrading from Karmic to Lucid, it seems the xserver-xorg-input-
synaptics package was removed and never reinstalled. When I went to try
Chris Highfield's idea (#9), I noticed the package was a dependency and
was downloaded because it wasn't installed.

Since the other two packages he suggested downloaded and installed, I'll
never know if it was the two programs he suggested or the missing
xserver-synaptics package causing the problem. Nonetheless, it's fixed
now.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 544496] Re: [RS100] desktop became slow after upgrading to Lucid

2010-05-01 Thread razor7
Hi...installed the latest ATi drivers from ATi, and the error persists,
i have auto-login enabled.

HINT: If i restart the xserver (ctrl+alt+backspace) the server restarts
as expected, then after typing my username and password, the desktop
appears really fast (as it must be)

Best regards!

my solution: reinstall complete system and now it works fine. if you are

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 134391] Re: Gutsy Tribe 5: Backlight does not come back on after resuming from suspend

2010-05-01 Thread Victor Pablos Ceruelo
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 189260 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/189260

Hi there,

on lenovo W500 with lenny+backports I have the same bug
(screen blancks but u can recover it by hibernating or restarting system).
This happens by using

echo -n mem /sys/power/state

and by using

echo -n 3 /proc/acpi/sleep

I can sleep and resume almost perfectly,
the only issue is that it suspends twice
(it suspends again after resume 1st time).
This behaviour happens every time I suspend the machine.

I have set in /etc/default/acpi-support
SUSPEND_METHODS=none
but it still suspends twice.

I've too disabled suspend in

/etc/acpi/sleepbtn.sh
/etc/acpi/sleep.sh
/etc/acpi/actions/lm_lid.sh
/etc/acpi/lid.sh

and in gnome-power-manager
but it still suspends twice.

Is there any other place where I can disable suspend
to see where is the problem?

Thanks,

Victor.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 565407] Re: package fglrx (not installed) failed to install/upgrade: subprocess new pre-installation script returned error exit status 1 - inst_path_default or inst_path_override

2010-05-01 Thread blackSP
OK all, forget the previous update, I have managed to execute tjhe
proposed workaround but I'm now facing the following:

According to the driver manager (System-Administration-Hardware Drivers)
the propriatary fglrx driver is available AND enabled. However, when I
want to enable visual effects there's a long driver search resulting in
'desktop effects could not be enabled'.

Running Forlong's compiz-check script
(http://forlong.blogage.de/entries/pages/Compiz-Check) gives the
following output:

---

./compiz-check

Gathering information about your system...

Graphics chip: ATI Technologies Inc Mobility Radeon HD 2400
 Driver in use: radeon

 Checking for hardware/setup problems... [SKIP]

At least one check had to be skipped:

Now what?

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 541511] Re: MASTER: [i855] GPU lockup (apport-crash)

2010-05-01 Thread pvanderploeg
I tried your procedure and it worked. Great. Thank you very much.

2010/5/1 Elena M. Lopez (Nena) lopez.apcl...@gmail.com

 @pvanderploeg,
I have the same issue with my D400 with the same graphics card. I just
tried the workaround listed in posts #33 and #34 in the following thread,
and it worked for me (
 http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1465883page=4).

Basically, what I did was as follows:

Step 1: When booting into the live CD, I pressed Tab, and added the
i915.modeset=1 option to the boot command line.
 Refer to thread/post:
 http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=9203466postcount=33

Step 2: I installed Lucid with no problems, but when restarted, I of
course ran into the same boot issue. So, I needed to make the changes in
 step 1 permanent.

Step 3: I restarted into the live environment again (as in step 1), mounted
my local root partition, and as root, did two things in the /etc/ directory.
  a) permanently added i915 modeset=1 (w/o quotes) to the grub
 configuration file (/etc/default/grub).
  Refer to thread/post:
 http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=9171045postcount=11 (as redirected
 from http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=9203466postcount=34)

b)created the configuration file /etc/modprobe.d/i915-kms.conf and added
the line options i915 modeset=1 (w/o quotes) according to the first
 workaround listed in this thread:
 https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Bugs/Lucidi8xxFreezes

And it now everything works. Finally. And life is good again. If you have
any questions, feel free to PM me through launchpad. Although I am not an
expert, I can at least explain what worked for me, although I couldn't tell
 you why. :)
  ~Elena

This is a MASTER bug report, i.e. not a real bug report, but a tool to help
 manage other bug reports.

Most bug reports on i855 are probably due to the CPU/GPU incoherency
problem that is now consolidated upstream at
 http://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=27187 (which was split off
from a bug report for i845). For now, we mark all automatically reported GPU
lockups on i855 as duplicates of this unless there is a reason not to. There
are some tests you may do to help upstream with this issue, and I will come
back with instructions here. For those of you who know how to patch and
compile a kernel you may look at comment #30 (and #6 for what kind of
feedback they want) in the upstream bug report. Actually, if someone could
volunteer to build an ubuntu-packaged kernel with this patch for others to
 test, that would be nice.

There is a similar master bug report for i845 at bug 541492.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 351186] Re: [M76] [ubuntu 9.04] [ubuntu 9.10] [ubuntu 10.04] slow unminimizing with ati card and desktop effects enabled

2010-05-01 Thread Daniel Castro
Hey dvhart,

I also have applied launchpad-weyland's PPA patch on a Thinkpad W500
with ATI HD 3650 and Ubuntu 9.10 and it solves the slow desktop effects
problem. But I suspect it introduces performance degradation on Xorg.

I had a T61p with Nvidia which worked very good, but it died on me. So I
got the new W500 and loaded 9.10 straight away. Hardware-wise the W500
should be a bit faster than the T61p, but I feel it a bit sluggish in
comparison.

Right after starting or rebooting my computer everything is good, but
after a day of use my Xorg process grows to ~180Mb and start consuming
like ~20-30% of CPU.

Could you let me know if you start experiencing the same thing?

Thanks!

Since the new version of ubuntu/kubuntu (9.04 jaunty) a new bug occurs with
ATI cards and desktop effects enabled.
With fglrx driver, the unminimizing of windows is really slow ... it can take
from 1 to 3 seconds.
Also, the maximizing, unmaximizing and Alt+Tab present the same problem.
The opening of a window present the same bug, freezing the system for 1sec.
This bug is under both gnome and kde (4.2.1)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 572937] [NEW] After upgrade 9.10 to 10.04, using nvidia, KDE4 starts for a second, then dies

2010-05-01 Thread Mark Ellison
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nvidia-current

My machine: AMD64 with NVidia (GF8800) graphics
After upgrade of kubuntu from 9.10 to 10.04
Package versions: nvidia-current 195.36.15-ubuntu2

What I saw:
* booted to kdm ok (and later tested gdm)
* chose kde and logged in
* expected: normal kde4 start with startup icons gradually appearing in a
central panel before desktop appears (as I had before distribution upgrade)
* got: a second of initialisation (background) then black screen and back to *dm

After checking /var/log/Xorg.0.log and /var/log/kdm.log without finding
anything useful, I started an X session from the command line using startx, and
checked .xsession-errors. The most serious looking of the many messages was:
 kdeinit4: preparing to launch /usr/lib/libkdeinit4_ksmserver.so
 unknown program name(3448)/ KStartupInfo::createNewStartupId: creating:
 niedzwiedz;1272707639;697843;3448_TIME0 : unnamed app
Could not open library ksmserver: Cannot load library
 /usr/lib/libkdeinit4_ksmserver.so: (/usr/lib/libGL.so.1: undefined symbol:
 _nv25gl)
ksmserver: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libGL.so.1: undefined symbol:
 _nv25gl

Investigating /usr/lib/libGL.so.1, I found that it was a symbolic link to:
libGL.so.185.18.36 which was a bad idea, as I was running nvidia driver
195.36.15. Ooops. I tried various combinations of package choices from synaptic
(including running nvidia-common which should delete ), but none seemed that
they would clobber the errant libGL.so.1. So I performed the following
work-around:
$ sudo rm /usr/lib/libGL.so.1
$ sudo ln -s /usr/lib/nvidia-current/libGL.so.195.36.15 /usr/lib/libGL.so.1

(on later testing, the second step appears to be unnecessary)

Having made this change, I could start kde without issues.

On another system still running 9.10:
$ dpkg -S /usr/lib/libGL.so.1
diversion by nvidia-glx-173 from: /usr/lib/libGL.so.1
diversion by nvidia-glx-173 to: /usr/lib/nvidia/libGL.so.1.xlibmesa
libgl1-mesa-glx, nvidia-glx-173: /usr/lib/libGL.so.1

which makes me think that nvidia-glx-173 was responsible for the link
into /usr/lib in the first place. Unfortunately, synaptic reports no
equivalent package for 195.36.15, with the files apparently having been
bundled into nvidia-current.

The bug is that this package (nvidia-common) should clobber any link in
/usr/lib resulting from a superseded package (or at least cause that
package to be deleted, deletion of which should remove the link). I can
understand the niceness of alternative drivers sitting on the system at
one time, but if it means that kde won´t start, some clobbering of these
inopportune links should be part of installing the nvidia-current
package.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 572943] [NEW] Regression over Karmic on detection of physical screen size and resolution

2010-05-01 Thread sergio.callegari
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

On a Dell E6500 with intel graphics and a 1920x1080 panel, with kubuntu.

On Karmic, xorg was detecting the correct physical screen size (about
30cm x 20cm) and resolution and thus setting the dots-per-inch
correctly.

On Lucid, the physical screen size is set at over 50cm x 32cm to always
give a dpi of 96, which gives ridiculously small fonts on this machine.
The xorg log indicates

(II) intel(0): Setting screen physical size to 508 x 317

please, avoid hardwiring the dpi to 96 since it makes no sense at all.
Why should my laptop believe that it has a screen as big as a huge TV
set?

If there are machines where edid reports incorrect data, then default to
having some reasonable dpi there, but provide a means so that one can
specify to use edid on his machine.

If this is an upstream bug with intel graphics, please be so kind to
report upstream.
