It seems likely that this is a duplicate of bug #548891.

If there are any people here who haven't already worked-around this by
running dpkg-reconfigure console-setup, what does the
file /etc/default/console-setup contain?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 574069] Re: [Lucid] Loading nvidia-settings hurts compiz performance

2010-05-03 Thread Sixpounder
Another workaround is a script like this to launch at startup in place
of nvidia-settings:

#!/bin/bash
sleep 5
nvidia-settings --load-config-only

This doesn't kill compiz performances, however I use Google Chrome so I
didn't tested firefox, I'll do it this evening and report here asap

part of dmesg read:
[29429.364045] [drm:i915_hangcheck_elapsed] *ERROR* Hangcheck timer elapsed...
GPU hung
[29429.364065] render error detected, EIR: 0x

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 385723] Re: no backlight support for laptop (hal depreciation regression)

2010-05-03 Thread Konstantin Maslov
@Mario Schwalbe: nvidia-bl-dkms 0.16.7 for lucid works for my sony vaio
vgn-fz11sr.

On fresh Lucid. Just install the package, add line "nvidia-bl
max_level=1026" to /etc/modules and reboot. Does not work properly
without parameter on my laptop. Parameters values that work are from
1024 to 1029 or so...

Just one thing more, I can not set full backlight with hotkeys
(Fn+F5/F6), always one step lower. If I press BrightnessUp key many many
times Smartdimmer still shows 95, the maximum is 100, "cat
/sys/class/backlight/bla-bla-bla" is one step lower the maximum too. All
other backlight functions work just fine.

The problem on VAIOs is that there is no laptop_panel device in hal with
proprietary nvidia driver. There are some scripts to manage backlight
through Smartdimmer on VAIOs and Smartdimmer works fine in latest Ubuntu
distros. But these scripts do not work because hal does not recognize
laptop_panel device.

Backlight management works fine with nouveau driver but this driver has
no 3D acceleration yet.

You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: gdm

Hi, I am running Ubuntu 10.04 (lucid) and I have a problem when logging
out or changing the user.

The first time I reach GDM screen after booting, everything works fine.
I can enter my session and everything is fine. However, if I log out or
try to change the user, the screen resolution changes and in the GDM
login screen, part of my monitor is black (I am attaching pictures so
you can see how it looks). After this happens, the problem is not in GDM
only. If I try to log in again, the problem persists and the screen
resolution is not the correct one.

If I restart GDM service, everything starts working fine again. However,
it is very annoying to reset GDM every time I need to log out/change
user.

I am using an Intel graphic card based on G45 chipset and my monitor is
an LG L222WS. If you need any more information, please let me know.

Thank you very much in advance,
Victor

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 563042] Re: Dual screen crashes X server on Intel 915

2010-05-03 Thread cgrushko
Having the same problem (dual head, etc.) , except -
1. It happens on KDE
2. The same xrandr command on GNOME works fine.

Attached my backtrace, which is identical except some addresses.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 574152] [NEW] 64bit Ubuntu 10.04 Stops Responding

2010-05-03 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: gdm

Fresh installation of Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid 64bit version.

The system appears to simply stop responding at random times.

No mouse response, no keyboard response. Nothing.
The system stops responding for up to a minute or so at a time, and then begins
responding again.

My hardware is an AMD Phenom X4 processor, 7GB ram, ATI Radeon 3200
video.

The system stops responding with the default video driver, it also stops
responding if I install the restricted closed source video driver.
Disabling compiz appears to have no effect on this problem.

No sure what logs people would like to see, but I will be happy to
upload any information as required to try and track this down.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 505494] Re: Mouse events fail frequently and unpredictably, requiring kwin restart

2010-05-03 Thread Xavier Aragon
The KDE bug tracker has the following bug report about a situation which
leads to similar mouse problems as described here. That problem occurs
only if the mouse gestures feature has been turned on.

https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=224712

There is also a method for recovering from the problem without
restarting the X session by issuing the following command, which sends a
fake mouse button 2 release event:

xdotool mouseup 2

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 574336] [NEW] Xorg hangs on Intel Core i5 (Intel HD4500)

2010-05-03 Thread Marius
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

This is fresh install of Ubuntu 10.04 (64 bit) on Intel Core 5 on Intel board.
The installation has not been changed, the X server is running without the
xorg.conf file.
After some time suddenly the Xorg server hangs, mouse and keyboard (USB)
completely hangs too. But the system is available using SSH. The kernel logs:

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 574020] Re: Xorg crashes when opening the console of a VM with virt-manager

2010-05-03 Thread Kuyper
Very interesting: if I use UltraVNC from my Windows box in order to
connect to the virtual machine (which works) and reboot the system by
sending Ctrl-Alt-Del, UltraVNC *crashes* as well!

Maybe there is something very in the vnc code? But why would X crash
then? Strange...

In Lucid configuring as reported on previous comment seems to work.
Only thing not resolved is with buttons:

I have pen-tip as button 1 and lower stylus button as right-click, but the

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 352322] Re: startx from CD boot fails on nvidia card

2010-05-03 Thread Mark Wilby
Done. May not help though. I mentioned in a previous email what I
think was causing the problem for me. Now I am running a full 9.1
installation, so the info you are looking for may not be here.

The boot cd issue has not gone away, but to do so you need to find the
correct BUSID for the primary graphics card and insert that into the
effective xorg.conf. Until that's done you can't start X. I am not sure
if there is a systematic way of making the choice of ID (in my case it
seems to be the highest one.) If not you would have to run a test on
xinit, changing the BUSSID, till you found one that worked.

It is also possible the problem is not just found with nvidia cards
