[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 584167] Re: graphics broken during boot after upgrade to lucid 64bit
** Description changed: After upgrading to 10.04 the graphics during boot are corrupted. They show up but are unreadable. The rest used to work, but started crashing after suspend recently. If I reboot then the garbled graphics show up (you can make out the lines and the Ubuntu logo, but you can't read anything) and it's stuck there. I'm sure the message means to say something important. Last time I pressed F12 and some letters by accident and the login appeared. This seems to work, but the graphics - are still corrupted during boot and if I keep hitting my keyboard like - that something else might break. + are still corrupted during boot. Using a thinkpad t61p nvidia Quadro FX 570M (rev a1), Subsystem: Lenovo Device 20d9 NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver (version current) lucid 64bit ps.: If the periodical fsck came up you also wouldn't be able to make anything out, because of the garbled graphics.. (see bootchart) - pps.: apparently you have to push F12 and then type log, but this might be completely accidental and something else might also work. So annoying. Had showstopping problems like this after everyone of the last 3 upgrades.. + pps.: apparently you have to push F12 and then push i, but this might be completely accidental and something else might also work. -- graphics broken during boot after upgrade to lucid 64bit https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/584167 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to nvidia-graphics-drivers in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 581741] Re: package fglrx (not installed) failed to install/upgrade: subprocess new pre-installation script returned error exit status 1
This affects my Toshiba Satellite Pro laptop with Mobility Radeon HD 3400. Latest ATI driver install + running the command sudo aticonfig --initial -f, seems to have restored the PC to fully working state (including wobbly windows etc). Note: I had failed upgrade, upgrade aborted at the end of the 9.10 to 10.04 upgrade process. I tried fixing broken packages using synaptic. This did not work. Update spotted that I was missing a fglrx package and I let it try this before I installed the bespoke drivers thinking that this long-term bug might have been fixed (I had the same problem on the last upgrade -- again fixed using the ATI drivers). However, this gave same error. Annoyingly, I couldn't find a way of copying the errors shown in details following synaptic's attempt to fix broken packages. No Ctrl-C nor right-click copy-paste was available. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 574449] Re: random flickers on ubuntu lucid desktop
Thanks for the link, Shanmuhanathan T! The YouTube video for the link provided by Shanmuhanathan T seems to demonstrate the problem at hand. A direct link to the video is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sSPS7y6MCXc. Because of the nature of the problem, you need to very carefully observe the lower portion of the screen shown in the video - the area around the blue comment header line - while the clip is playing to see the flicker. I am now trying out the workaround mentioned in Shanmuhanathan T's link, i.e., adding i915.powersave=0 to GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX in /etc/default/grub and then sudo update-grub. Of course, I will need a few days to observe the effect and even then I will only be able to check whether the flickers still occur in that time period. It will not be possible to say that the flickers are gone for good because they don't occur with any regularity anyway. I will report back with my findings. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 353137] Re: missing pixels when drawing connecting lines
The attached images [x11_paint_bug.png] shows how WINE applications (and my custom drawn GUI toolkit - fpGUI) looks like with the default open-source ATI driver. Notice all the lines are not connecting. This bug has now been in Ubuntu since the 8.10 release. Today I installed Ubuntu 10.04 (64-bit) and still this bug is visible there. As soon as I upgrade to the proprietary ATI driver, then the bug is gone. I have created numerous tests to make sure the issue is not in my fpGUI Toolkit, but as I said, the bug is also in all Windows applications run under WINE. A simple test I did was draw a vertical line from the bottom up. The first pixel is never painted with the open-source ATI drivers. In Ubuntu 8.04.3 and earlier, this bug was not there. ** Attachment added: Default ubuntu showing painting bugs. http://launchpadlibrarian.net/49017725/x11_paint_bug.png -- missing pixels when drawing connecting lines https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/353137 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to libx11 in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 559579] [NEW] Thick border appears hollow after expose events with FGLRX driver
You have been subscribed to a public bug: Binary package hint: openoffice.org (description updated 5/22/2010) When using the fglrx hardware-accelerated graphics driver in Linux, thick (4 point) borders sometimes appear hollow in print-preview, i.e., they are rendered as two very thin lines separated by a thick white space. The problem seems related to X expose events (see below). Attached is a demo .ods file and screen-shot showing the incorrect rendering. The screenshot was taken on a 1920x1280-res system, where the symptom occurs constantly. At lower resolutions such as 1280x1024, only the left third or half of the line is solid black, the rest hollow, and expose events cause black portions to be re-painted as hollow (not all white, but hollow). The problem appears only in the first instance of the border, not in other similar borders. Maybe it has to do with the previous row somehow. This -might- be an fglrx driver bug, but such problems do not appear with any other application. The exact way the X server sends expose events to applications might depend on intimate details of the driver and hardware acceleration, and how (or whether) save-unders are implemented. So this might be a problem with oo's rendering/expose- event code. To reproduce this you probably need to have an ATI graphics card and use the fglrx driver. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 584898] Re: [i945gm] Duplicated and missing applets in the applet panel on startup
I think I have seen the same thing a few times on 965GM. Can you confirm that this is indeed a render error, i.e. when you hover the mouse over the icons, it shows tooltips from what should actually be there, not what is shown on screen, and when you click, the action taken is not necessarily from the icon that is shown? My keyboard layout applet is sometimes not visible due to some other icon being duplicated, but I can usually switch keyboard layout by finding the right spot and clicking. Another thing that may hint to where the problem lies, is to turn desktop effects on/off and see if it makes a difference. -- [i945gm] Duplicated and missing applets in the applet panel on startup https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/584898 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 584674] Re: Lucid fresh install doesn't go beyond login. Possible Savage driver problem.
apport information ** Tags added: apport-collected ** Description changed: Binary package hint: kdebase-workspace Description:Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Release:10.04 xorg: Instalado: 1:7.5+5ubuntu1 kdm: Instalado: 4:4.4.2-0ubuntu14 After fresh install from Lucid CD, after typing user/pass at KDM, screen blinks and returns to login screen. Xorg.0.log tells me Fatal error, video driver problem with savage, some framemapping range issue. Doing the following steps work around it, making it a very strange bug: 1. login in console 2. as root, service kdm stop 3. rmmod savage 4. modprobe savagefb (different module) 5. startx It works! Notice that is startx, if I try kdm start, the same problem will happen. If I try failsafe mode (vesa driver) the computer hangs in a black screen. After startx, then no problem, nothing, I can use KDE normally. In previous releases in this same computer, no problem like this whatsoever, not a single video driver issue or Xorg issue. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 568015] Re: Watermark AMD unsupported hardware is displayed
As stated here: http://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_itempx=NTkyMg you will have to: - Download the latest ati driver for your graphics card - Extract the driver by executing the downloaded *.run file with option --extract in your terminal - Go to the extracted folder and find common/etc/ati/control - Copy the file named control into /etc/ati on your file system With the latest control file the watermark should be gone. This solved the problem for me. -- Watermark AMD unsupported hardware is displayed https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/568015 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to fglrx-installer in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 584898] Re: [i945gm] Duplicated and missing applets in the applet panel on startup
I cannot confirm the behavior you're describing. In case of duplicated applets, one of the icons has the expected behavior on click, but the other one is just not responding to any action. So, in the scenario of the attached screenshot, I can't access my wi-fi network manager, even by clicking on the spot it *should* be, one of the bluetooth icons is working but the other isn't doing anything, and same for the sound managr applet. Delyan, are you able to force the NVIDIA proprietary driver to control the backlight? You can do this by adding Option RegistryDwords EnableBrightnessControl=1 to the Devices section of xorg.conf and then restarting. Also, does your backlight emit a buzz or humming noise when the brightness has been changed using the NVIDIA drivers? ** Summary changed: - Backlight controls on ThinkPad T510 and W510 no longer function when using proprietary drivers + Backlight controls of laptops with NVIDIA NVS 3100M no longer function while using proprietary drivers ** Tags added: 3100m nvs ** Summary changed: - Backlight controls of laptops with NVIDIA NVS 3100M no longer function while using proprietary drivers + Backlight controls of laptops with NVIDIA NVS and Quadro FX 880M GPUs no longer function while using proprietary drivers ** Tags added: 880m fx quadro ** Description changed: - The brightness controls on ThinkPad T510s and W510s work while running - Nouveau or when using a text mode VT, but not while running X and using - proprietary NVIDIA drivers. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 584674] Re: Lucid fresh install doesn't go beyond login. Possible Savage driver problem.
As I said before, the fatal error doesn't show up in the log anymore. There is no fatal error anymore. I'm gonna attach the only error that show up in messages. And still, that error only occurs when, after boot up, I login at the console, and modprobe savagefb. So there are 2 modules for savage, savage and savagefb. But the error also happens using xdm, and I can log in normally in xdm. So the error logged is probably not related. Also, maybe unrelated, when I press ctrl+alt+f1 on kdm/xdm to go to the console, the kubuntu logo splash loading screen loading dots and the blue background is still there. I use the console with the dots lighting up and a blue screen, which makes it hard to use the console. Applies to all consoles, not just f1. To note, the screen blink in kdm happens right after the screen is drawn fully white, and it quickly refreshes to the kdm background, and only then the screen goes black - as in the X server being restarted. When I log in using xdm or startx, I can see the same white box being drawn, but its just occupying 1/4 of the screen, and after that the desktop background is drawn, along with the rest of it. ** Attachment added: Messages.
