Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 587136] Re: [gm45] Resume failure in Toshiba Satellite U400 (Backtrace included)

Bryan, Thanks for the very quick reply. I have checked my install log. You can use the --kernelsourcedir option to tell DKMS where it's located, or you could install the linux-headers-2.6.31-14-generic package. [Error] Kernel Module : Failed to build fglrx-8.723 with DKMS [Error] Kernel Module : Removing fglrx-8.723 from DKMS - To know what --kernelsourcedir I could give, I checked man dkms. It says usually this kernel source is in /lib/modules/$kernel_version/build. However, I did not find this folder 'build' in my /lib/modules/2.6.31-14/ at all. I checked another kernel in my system. It has a build folder, but it is pointing to /usr/src/linux-hearders-2.6.32.22, not the one I would need for 2.6.31-14. In /usr/src there is no such folder. I am not sure if I can install this? The problem is, I cannot boot to the 2.6.32-22 kernel at all because I got only a black screen, even in recovery mode. I tried to just copy the build folder from /lib/modules/2.6.32-22/build to the one of 2.6.31-14. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 577566] [NEW] kernel updates ALWAYS breaks video drivers
You have been subscribed to a public bug: Binary package hint: apt Whenever APT or the auto-updater updates the kernel, it always breaks the video drivers (specifically nvidia). This can be problematic to fix, especially if Ubuntu screws up your screen resolutions (ubuntu 8.04), and will require some knowledge to fix even after the video drivers have been reinstalled... This is very troublesome to me as I'm am about to ship out a new computer to a customer with Kubuntu reinstalled. How to fix: 1. Do not update the kernel by default when upgrade is run, add an extra update-kernel parameter. 2. Before updating the kernel, post a big caveat that it could break video drivers when upgrading. 3. If the kernel is reinstalled, the video drivers should be reinstalled as well (or, kernel and video drivers need to be released at the same time, with the kernel update occurring first). This is extremely problematic for those of us who also offer support for new systems, and have to deal with broken video drivers. Just fix it now. Quick hack to apt-get and auto-updaters that require the user to explicitly state they wish to update the kernel, and print a warning with confirmation dialogue before updating the kernel until a better solution can be found to automatically fix drivers and other software that could be affected by a kernel update. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 577566] Re: kernel updates ALWAYS breaks video drivers
First of all, the installer from Nvidia's website is not supported (as it can break the system that we use in Ubuntu) and whenever a kernel is updated you will have to rebuild the module manually. Using only Jockey and Ubuntu's packages should work, provided that the metapackage for your kernel headers (e.g. linux-headers-generic) is installed as you will update the headers when you receive a kernel update. Also, installing the nvidia package without enabling the driver will result in a failure. I'm unable to help you with this problem because: 1) you don't seem to have a clean system any more (as you used the nvidia installer) 2) you didn't provide any logs which could help debugging (such as the output of dmesg, Xorg.0.log, etc.). For future reference, filing a bug report by typing the following command includes (most of) the relevant information: ubuntu-bug nvidia-current As a result, I'm marking this bug report as Incomplete. Of course, should you want to do a clean installation of Ubuntu and to try to reproduce the problem, I'd be glad to help you through the debugging process. ** Changed in: jockey (Ubuntu) Status: New = Incomplete ** Package changed: jockey (Ubuntu) = nvidia-graphics-drivers (Ubuntu) -- kernel updates ALWAYS breaks video drivers https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/577566 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to nvidia-graphics-drivers in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 440233] Re: fglrx fails at startup because of missing amdpcsdb.default + removal leaves bad settings in Xorg.conf
Zhao, You should be aware that the following is two commands: cd /var/lib/dkms/fglrx/8.723/build; sh make.sh --nohints --uname_r=2.6.31-14-generic --norootcheck These are: cd /var/lib/dkms/fglrx/8.723/build sh make.sh --nohints --uname_r=2.6.31-14-generic --norootcheck The first is a change directory command to directory /var/lib/dkms/fglrx/8.723/build. This command will only fail if this directory does not exist. The second is running make in this directory. The key input to make is the file Makefile. It is found in this directory. I assume it is the Kernel module for fglrx which make is is intended to build. Make is much more complex and could fail for many reasons. My guess is make is failing (I assume the /var/lib/dkms/fglrx/8.723/build directory exists). However diagnosing make problems is outside my expertise. I would also expect that the install is running with root privileges and therefore should not have any problems with write privileges creating files etc. Therefore I think your following comment is wrong: I thought maybe it is just too shy to make such a folder there. The contents of the /var/lib/dkms/fglrx/8.723/build directory on my system is (You will note the existence of the files make.sh and Makefile): br...@tardis:/var/lib/dkms/fglrx/8.723/build$ ls -l total 6820 drwxr-xr-x 3 root root4096 2010-05-07 21:44 2.6.x -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 290 2010-05-07 21:44 dkms.conf -rw-r--r-- 1 root root4363 2010-05-07 21:44 drm_compat.h -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 21251 2010-05-07 21:44 drm.h -rw-r--r-- 1 root root4920 2010-05-07 21:44 drm_os_linux.h -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 31451 2010-05-07 21:44 drmP.h -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 15405 2010-05-07 21:44 drm_proc.h -rw-r--r-- 1 root root4834 2010-05-07 21:44 fglrxko_pci_ids.h -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 163326 2010-05-07 21:44 firegl_public.c -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 37809 2010-05-07 21:44 firegl_public.h -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 27696 2010-05-07 21:44 kcl_acpi.c -rw-r--r-- 1 root root5775 2010-05-07 21:44 kcl_acpi.h -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 12172 2010-05-07 21:44 kcl_agp.c -rw-r--r-- 1 root root2610 2010-05-07 21:44 kcl_agp.h -rw-r--r-- 1 root root1578 2010-05-07 21:44 kcl_config.h -rw-r--r-- 1 root root4568 2010-05-07 21:44 kcl_debug.c -rw-r--r-- 1 root root7202 2010-05-07 21:44 kcl_debug.h -rw-r--r-- 1 root root5923 2010-05-07 21:44 kcl_io.c -rw-r--r-- 1 root root6271 2010-05-07 21:44 kcl_ioctl.c -rw-r--r-- 1 root root2703 2010-05-07 21:44 kcl_ioctl.h -rw-r--r-- 1 root root2943 2010-05-07 21:44 kcl_io.h -rw-r--r-- 1 root root1529 2010-05-07 21:44 kcl_osconfig.h -rw-r--r-- 1 root root9660 2010-05-07 21:44 kcl_pci.c -rw-r--r-- 1 root root3558 2010-05-07 21:44 kcl_pci.h -rw-r--r-- 1 root root7519 2010-05-07 21:44 kcl_str.c -rw-r--r-- 1 root root2925 2010-05-07 21:44 kcl_str.h -rw-r--r-- 1 root root1863 2010-05-07 21:44 kcl_type.h -rw-r--r-- 1 root root3448 2010-05-07 21:44 kcl_wait.c -rw-r--r-- 1 root root1793 2010-05-07 21:44 kcl_wait.h -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 3251624 2010-05-07 21:44 libfglrx_ip.a.GCC3 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 3251624 2010-05-07 21:44 libfglrx_ip.a.GCC4 -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 87 2010-05-07 21:44 Makefile -rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 15958 2010-05-07 21:44 make.sh -rw-r--r-- 1 root root2630 2010-05-07 21:44 make.sh.log This is about as much help as I can give. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 561049] Re: after upgrade to lucid, xorg frequently fails to start properly using nvidia-current
This bug is not fixed, and I get the failure far more often than he reports (most of the time it fails to load the nvidia module, and only occasionally can I get it to boot properly). Ubuntu 10.04 is the first version of Ubuntu that seems to support my nvidia graphics card (GeForce GT 320M) (at least I couldn't get it to use the nvidia drivers in 9.10). Attached are Xorg.0.log (a successful nvidia start up), Xorg.1.log (Xorg catching the failure and switching to VESA), and Xorg.2.log (a failed log). Xorg.0.log is in one system boot while Xorg.1.log and Xorg.2.log are in the previous system boot. Also attached is the messages file, which the nvidia driver suggests reading for an error message, but I can't find one that doesn't show up under a successful boot up, as well. I did find in comparing the dmesg and dmesg.0 (the current and previous boot, respectively) that when the failure occurs, it seems the nForce2 driver is failing (nForce2_smbus :00:03.2: Error probing SMB2.) in dmesg.0 while in dmesg no such line can be found. Do you think it could be some sort of race condition on communicating with the nForce2 chipset between the nForce2 driver and nvidia's proprietary graphics driver? (It is a black box, it could be touching who knows what.) ** Attachment added: All of the above-mentioned log files http://launchpadlibrarian.net/49365240/logFiles.tar.gz -- after upgrade to lucid, xorg frequently fails to start properly using nvidia-current https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/561049 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to nvidia-graphics-drivers in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 440233] Re: fglrx fails at startup because of missing amdpcsdb.default + removal leaves bad settings in Xorg.conf
Bryan, Thanks for your explanation. I now see that my /var/lib/dkms/fglrx folder is actually deleted when the installer found error. But I managed to copy it from the source /usr/src/fglrx-8.723. Then I run 'sudo sh make.sh --nohints --uname_r=2.6.32-22-generic --norootcheck' at termnial. I changed the kernel version from 2.6.31-14 to 2.6.32-22 and now I see message 'build succeeded with return value 0'. However, nothing really changed after this 'make'. I have noticed that the file size you listed for libfglrx_ip* are 3MB but the ones I have is only 2MB: -rw-r--r-- 1 root src 2354408 2010-05-30 12:19 libfglrx_ip.a.GCC3 -rw-r--r-- 1 root src 2354408 2010-05-30 12:19 libfglrx_ip.a.GCC4 All the other file sizes are the same. Is it possible that you post these files so that I can give them a try? Post #48 suggests to link /etc/ati to /usr/lib/fglrx/etc/ati. But in my /usr/lib there is no such a folder called fglrx. I also compared my xorg.conf with Post #44. Did not see meaningful differences. In the meantime, I also made a fresh USB installer from a new download of Lucid. I tried to install the driver there and was hoping to get some good copy. But in the end it is the same. I also tried to install the driver using Jockey-gtk as discussed by post #14 and #43. I then ended up the same as using Synaptic, i.e. only a broken fglrxamdccc installed but not the real fglrx driver. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 585765] Re: Ubuntu 10.04 random freezes
I believe I see both of these conditions on the Intel dual-core Atom N330 motherboard. I have a monitor with both DVI and VGA inputs. The board in question uses the VGA input. Fairly frequently, when I switch from DVI use back to VGA use, the screensaver is active. But the system is frozen. Pressing the CAPS LOCK key does not light the caps-lock light on the keyboard. The mouse does not work. At first, I thought USB was dead, but I cannot ssh to the box and a ping after that results in the report the system id down. A front-panel reset is all that revives the system. This is not new with 10.04, but seems very frequent with 10.04 now. A second observation of a different scenario is that at times I seem to be unable to use the keyboard, nor can I use the mouse inside an application window, but I can use the mouse to launch new applications. If I select the System Monitor, for example, it will launch, but I cannot select a specific process. However, I beleive that when I used a right-click, things started working again (memory foggy - it was late). Most, but not all, of my lockups involve Thunderbird email being active, but not all. I also had VirtualBox installed, until I read this thread moments ago. Also, on a probably-unrelated sidenote, I use a ReadyNAS NAS unit. At some point, once of my systems, possibly this one, started waking the ReadyNAS every few minutes. I don't know if the nfs driver is doing something strange on this host, but that was not the normal ReadyNAS behavior on a system that was sitting idle. -- Ubuntu 10.04 random freezes https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/585765 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg-server in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 577566] Re: kernel updates ALWAYS breaks video drivers
Unfortunately that system has already been shipped. It'll be some time before I get around to doing a clean install on any of my existing systems. Regardless, the system had a clean install at first, and when the update utility was allowed to upgrade the system (including the linux kernel header files), the video stopped working. Also, when the system had a clean install, the nvidia package claimed the driver was being built, but it still didn't update the current kernel. The supported drivers do not work well with nVidia cards, and offer a very limited (800x600) resolution which is unacceptable. So there you go. The problem is most likely in the package's build process. I'm sure any log files would tell you something similar. nVidia was the first of the major 3d accelerated video card manufacturers to support linux with stable drivers, ATI came later. Even still, nVidia will remain a favorite among many Linux users, and not supporting the drivers is foolish. While old time linux users won't have much of a problem working around that, newer Linux users will be completely lost and will be scratching their heads wondering why their video stopped working (which is also what happened with my client when the update utility decided it was time to update the kernel again). If anything, a simple fix would be to disable auto-updates of the kernel by default. If a system works, there is generally no reason to update the kernel. Dist-upgrade to 10.4 from 9.10 on my notebook resulted in breaking my wifi card. reverting back to the older kernel fixed everything. Just an example (it's a RaLink card). [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 587636] [NEW] Xorg 100% CPU usage with HTML5 video in Firefox [Radeon KMS]
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati HTML5 videos embedded in web pages in a certain way are unusably slow with Radeon KMS and cause xorg process to use 100% CPU. Examples of web pages with videos that cripple Xorg: http://www.dailymotion.com/openvideodemo http://hacks.mozilla.org/2010/04/account-manager-coming-to-firefox/ http://videos.videoonwikipedia.org/ There is no crash, and situation is recoverable if web page with video is closed and/or video stopped and not in view. There is an upstream bug report here: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=27139 There seems to be a problem with how Firefox uses Xrender and how this is implemented in the Xorg driver, which causes usage of software fallbacks. I would guess this bug causes many web pages with HTML5 video to become unusable in Ubuntu Lucid+Firefox for users of ATI graphics cards with radeon-KMS driver. I found no Ubuntu bug report tracking this problem, so I'm reporting it now. I've got an ATI X1400 (r500) card, but this also affects r600 (from upstream report). [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 556872] Re: [lucid] [nouveau] blank screen on Dell Latitude E6410 (NVS 3100M [10de:0a6c])
The blank screen is caused by the nouveau BIOS code not understanding the 0x3A opcode. Support for this opcode has been added in http://cgit.freedesktop.org/nouveau/linux-2.6/commit/?id=877c1854cbc3f72c5e9948e5ff5a8f7e9d874d2e . This patch has not made it into 2.6.34, but it is in 2.6.34-git16. I can confirm that with the 2.6.34-git16 kernel with nouveau included, the screen no longer blanks on startup, and X works with the non- proprietary nouveau driver out of the box. -- [lucid] [nouveau] blank screen on Dell Latitude E6410 (NVS 3100M [10de:0a6c]) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/556872 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-nouveau in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 541511] Re: MASTER: [i855] GPU lockup (apport-crash)
It is good to see some folk getting 10.04+855GM working using various new kernels, but I expect I am not alone in saying that I am unlikely to load 10.04 on my 855GM Toshiba Satellite A10 (still 9.04 after a poor experience with 9.10 also) until: 1 Upstream release a newer kernel that works really well with 855GM (IF it's possible) and is ... 2 ... cut into Ubuntu 10.04 as a respin, so that I can simply download the CD, install and enjoy I might just about cope with a special install (boot time options re vesa, 915 nosplash etc), provided that an immediately following update pulls the new kernel and leaves the machine perfect from then on! I expect there are many who want to convert from the dark side who would not be prepared to do even that. In the meantime I am actually considering refreshing the Toshiba with a repeat install of 9.04 (I like to do a clean reload every year or so, even with Ubuntu but especially of W... you know what). If 1 and possibly 2 does not happen, I am likely to move the ~8 year old Toshiba back to its original WXP and find someone else who wants it. I never had any screen trouble with it under WXP. I believe 855GM has some fundamental flaws, and it certainly has some limitations that have begun to annoy me as high resolution second screens become available, namely its max 2048x2048 virtual display space. For nice intuitive use, you REALLY do want a second screen that is on the right hand side of the desk also to be VIRTUALLY on the right hand side of the laptop screen, and that cannot happen with 855GM if the second screen is more than 1024 wide (hard to get one as small as that now!!). So for me, perhaps it is time to retire the Toshiba to light duties elsewhere, and move on. Sad for one like me who likes to squeeze the last reasonable drop of use out of everything!! And for me it has been a very good machine. All the best to the gurus working on this! -- MASTER: [i855] GPU lockup (apport-crash) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/541511 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is the registrant for xf86-video-intel. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 567696] Re: [Radeon] [Lucid] [mi] EQ overflowing. The server is probably stuck in an infinite loop
I too am seeing the very same symptoms, it's happened several times. Machine is a Thinkpad T60 with Radeon Mobility X1400. I have KMS turned off with a kernel option because it was causing a lot of problems. Xorg.0.log contained [mi] EQ overflowing. The server is probably stuck in an infinite loop. and a stack trace implicating radeon_drv.so and libglx.so. Next time it happens I'll make sure to keep a copy of the stack trace. Also syslog contains: May 30 20:36:30 jarvis kernel: [60546.074216] Uhhuh. NMI received for unknown reason b0 on CPU 0. May 30 20:36:30 jarvis kernel: [60546.074222] You have some hardware problem, likely on the PCI bus. May 30 20:36:30 jarvis kernel: [60546.074225] Dazed and confused, but trying to continue Seems to happen after a day or so of use, possibly always after a suspend/resume. Suddenly the pointer goes slow and no input works, not even the likes of ctrl-alt-delete nor ctrl-alt-f1. Since GLX is implicated I'm trying turning off compositing to see if it happens again. -- [Radeon] [Lucid] [mi] EQ overflowing.
