Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 587136] Re: [gm45] Resume failure in Toshiba Satellite U400 (Backtrace included)

2010-05-30 Thread Riccardo Poli
Hi again,

On Sat, 2010-05-29 at 21:19 +0100, Stenten wrote:
 Troubleshooting:
 1) Is there a difference between suspending by lid-close or by selecting
 Suspend from the shutdown menu?

See my previous message. One thing: it is now clear that the problem
does really occur at every other suspend/resume.

 2) Try disabling Desktop Effects and recreating.

This did not help.

 3) Try removing your xorg.conf and recreating. sudo mv
/etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.bak. If you need to restore it,
run sudo mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf.bak /etc/X11/xorg.conf. If for some
reason you don't get a desktop without xorg.conf, you can boot into
recovery mode and select root to get a command line, and then run the
restore commands.

This did not help

 4) Try reproducing on the current mainline kernel [1]. Download and install
the _all headers, amd64 headers, and amd64 image. You can revert by holding
down Shift during boot and selecting the 32-22 kernel and then removing the
three packages in Synaptic (search 2.6.34).

 [1]: http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.34-lucid/

This worked! I have now suspended and resumed both via lid-close/open
and power button several times without a problem.

Hibernate still does not work, but I guess I should submit this as a
different bug.

Many thanks for your help.

Riccardo

Similar issue to Nicholas above, running Lucid X64.
I have a slightly different graphics card looking at the output from lspci:

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Core Processor
Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02)

Freezes up happening intermittently with no apparent pattern, at first I
suspect could be down to a higher load as it was happening with the
GL screensavers but has since occurred whilst using FIrefox and even
happened last night whilst testing the HDMI out on my friends telly and
displaying some photos (I was very impressed how that worked so smoothly
- always been a bit weary of ubuntu+multiple screens!)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 587427] [NEW] dkms fails with newest version of the package fglrx in lucid

2010-05-30 Thread mb74
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: fglrx

After upgrading to latest version 2:8.732-0ubuntu0sarvatt2~lucid dkms fails
with error 6. The consequence is that building the fglrx module fails. When
compiz is enable logging in fails. The reason for this problem is a bug in the
file arch_fglrx_2.6.34.patch.
The first 2 lines contain a patch which doesn't exist.

After I've changes these lines to:

--- a/kcl_wait.c2010-04-13 20:02:46.494496561 +0200
+++ b/kcl_wait.c2010-04-13 19:52:00.054563389 +0200

The bug is fixed.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 584187] Re: [Lucid] Xorg server sometimes fails to start

2010-05-30 Thread Kai Krakow
Note that the proprietary nvidia X drivers load the
associated module themselves, so there's no
 chance of a race here

Well, attached a log and it clearly says the kernel module failed... But
I think this is a remnant of a more generic problem, as the other log
shows (it fails despite no nvidia module involved - it's the failsafe
session).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 440233] Re: fglrx fails at startup because of missing amdpcsdb.default + removal leaves bad settings in Xorg.conf

2010-05-30 Thread Zhao Zheng
Bryan,

Thanks for the very quick reply. I have checked my install log. It looks like
that it is saying it cannot find my kernel:
---
Creating symlink /var/lib/dkms/fglrx/8.723/source -
 /usr/src/fglrx-8.723

DKMS: add Completed.
You can use the --kernelsourcedir option to tell DKMS where it's located, or
you could install the linux-headers-2.6.31-14-generic package.
[Error] Kernel Module : Failed to build fglrx-8.723 with DKMS
[Error] Kernel Module : Removing fglrx-8.723 from DKMS
-
To know what --kernelsourcedir I could give, I checked man dkms. It says
usually this kernel source is in /lib/modules/$kernel_version/build. However, I
did not find this folder 'build' in my /lib/modules/2.6.31-14/ at all. I
checked another kernel in my system. It has a build folder, but it is pointing
to /usr/src/linux-hearders-2.6.32.22, not the one I would need for 2.6.31-14.
In /usr/src there is no such folder. I am not sure if I can install this? The
problem is, I cannot boot to the 2.6.32-22 kernel at all because I got only a
black screen, even in recovery mode.

I tried to just copy the build folder from /lib/modules/2.6.32-22/build to the
one of 2.6.31-14. Now I get a different error in the install log:
---
Creating symlink /var/lib/dkms/fglrx/8.723/source -
 /usr/src/fglrx-8.723

DKMS: add Completed.

Kernel preparation unnecessary for this kernel. Skipping...

Building module:
cleaning build area
cd /var/lib/dkms/fglrx/8.723/build; sh make.sh --nohints
--uname_r=2.6.31-14-generic --norootcheck(bad exit status: 1)
0
0
[Error] Kernel Module : Failed to build fglrx-8.723 with DKMS
[Error] Kernel Module : Removing fglrx-8.723 from DKMS
--

So it now looks like dkms has problem when 'cd
/var/lib/dkms/fglrx/8.723/build'. I checked my folder there in /var/lib/dkms,
there is only one single file dkms_dbversion. I thought maybe it is just too
shy to make such a folder there. So I created the folders /fglrx/8.723/build in
my /var/lib/dkms. Now the install log (/usr/share/ati/fglrx-install.log)
changed to:
--
Errors during DKMS module removal
Errors during DKMS module removal
[Error] Kernel Module : Failed to add fglrx-8.723 to DKMS

It is just not very logical to me. It failed to remove old module. Apparently I
don't have one. But it is still not installing a new one. So in the end I still
cannot have a working driver. Strange thing is the Catalyst Control Center
still works. Problems besides the lagging windows are: (1) I cannot activate
advanced desktop effects; (2) I cannot start blender any more; (3) all the
build in games cannot be started. For example:
-

This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadRequest (invalid request code or no such operation)'.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 577566] [NEW] kernel updates ALWAYS breaks video drivers

2010-05-30 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Binary package hint: apt

Whenever APT or the auto-updater updates the kernel, it always breaks
the video drivers (specifically nvidia). This can be problematic to fix,
especially if Ubuntu screws up your screen resolutions (ubuntu 8.04),
and will require some knowledge to fix even after the video drivers have
been reinstalled...

This is very troublesome to me as I'm am about to ship out a new
computer to a customer with Kubuntu reinstalled.

How to fix:

1. Do not update the kernel by default when upgrade is run, add an extra
update-kernel parameter.
2. Before updating the kernel, post a big caveat that it could break video
drivers when upgrading.
3. If the kernel is reinstalled, the video drivers should be reinstalled as
well (or, kernel and video drivers need to be released at the same time, with
the kernel update occurring first).

This is extremely problematic for those of us who also offer support for
new systems, and have to deal with broken video drivers. Just fix it
now. Quick hack to apt-get and auto-updaters that require the user to
explicitly state they wish to update the kernel, and print a warning
with confirmation dialogue before updating the kernel until a better
solution can be found to automatically fix drivers and other software
that could be affected by a kernel update.

Okay, now back to boxing up this brand new windows-free system for a
customer

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 577566] Re: kernel updates ALWAYS breaks video drivers

2010-05-30 Thread Alberto Milone
First of all, the installer from Nvidia's website is not supported (as
it can break the system that we use in Ubuntu) and whenever a kernel is
updated you will have to rebuild the module manually.

Using only Jockey and Ubuntu's packages should work, provided that the
metapackage for your kernel headers (e.g. linux-headers-generic) is
installed as you will update the headers when you receive a kernel
update. Also, installing the nvidia package without enabling the driver
will result in a failure.

I'm unable to help you with this problem because:
1) you don't seem to have a clean system any more (as you used the nvidia
installer)
2) you didn't provide any logs which could help debugging (such as the output
of dmesg, Xorg.0.log, etc.). For future reference, filing a bug report by
typing the following command includes (most of) the relevant information:
ubuntu-bug nvidia-current

As a result, I'm marking this bug report as Incomplete. Of course,
should you want to do a clean installation of Ubuntu and to try to
reproduce the problem, I'd be glad to help you through the debugging
process.

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 440233] Re: fglrx fails at startup because of missing amdpcsdb.default + removal leaves bad settings in Xorg.conf

2010-05-30 Thread Bryan Smith
Zhao,

You should be aware that the following is two commands:

cd /var/lib/dkms/fglrx/8.723/build; sh make.sh --nohints
--uname_r=2.6.31-14-generic --norootcheck

These are:

cd /var/lib/dkms/fglrx/8.723/build
sh make.sh --nohints --uname_r=2.6.31-14-generic --norootcheck

The first is a change directory command to directory
/var/lib/dkms/fglrx/8.723/build. This command will only fail if this
directory does not exist.

The second is running make in this directory. The key input to make is
the file Makefile. It is found in this directory. I assume it is the
Kernel module for fglrx which make is is intended to build. Make is
much more complex and could fail for many reasons. My guess is make is
failing (I assume the /var/lib/dkms/fglrx/8.723/build directory
exists). However diagnosing make problems is outside my expertise.

I would also expect that the install is running with root privileges and
therefore should not have any problems with write privileges creating
files etc. Therefore I think your following comment is wrong:

I thought maybe it is just too shy to make such a folder there.

The contents of the /var/lib/dkms/fglrx/8.723/build directory on my
system is (You will note the existence of the files make.sh and Makefile):

You can use the --kernelsourcedir option to tell DKMS where it's located, or
you could install the linux-headers-2.6.31-14-generic package.
[Error] Kernel Module : Failed to build fglrx-8.723 with DKMS
[Error] Kernel Module : Removing fglrx-8.723 from DKMS

To know what --kernelsourcedir I could give, I checked man dkms. It says
usually this kernel source is in /lib/modules/$kernel_version/build. However,
I did not find this folder 'build' in my /lib/modules/2.6.31-14/ at all. I
checked another kernel in my system. It has a build folder, but it is
pointing to /usr/src/linux-hearders-2.6.32.22, not the one I would need for
2.6.31-14. In /usr/src there is no such folder. I am not sure if I can
install this? The problem is, I cannot boot to the 2.6.32-22 kernel at all
because I got only a black screen, even in recovery mode.

I tried to just copy the build folder from /lib/modules/2.6.32-22/build to
the one of 2.6.31-14. Now I get a different error in the install log:
 ---
 Creating symlink /var/lib/dkms/fglrx/8.723/source -

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 561049] Re: after upgrade to lucid, xorg frequently fails to start properly using nvidia-current

2010-05-30 Thread ISV_Damocles
This bug is not fixed, and I get the failure far more often than he
reports (most of the time it fails to load the nvidia module, and only
occasionally can I get it to boot properly).

Ubuntu 10.04 is the first version of Ubuntu that seems to support my
nvidia graphics card (GeForce GT 320M) (at least I couldn't get it to
use the nvidia drivers in 9.10).

Attached are Xorg.0.log (a successful nvidia start up), Xorg.1.log (Xorg
catching the failure and switching to VESA), and Xorg.2.log (a failed
log).

Xorg.0.log is in one system boot while Xorg.1.log and Xorg.2.log are in
the previous system boot.

Also attached is the messages file, which the nvidia driver suggests
reading for an error message, but I can't find one that doesn't show up
under a successful boot up, as well.

I did find in comparing the dmesg and dmesg.0 (the current and previous
boot, respectively) that when the failure occurs, it seems the nForce2
driver is failing (nForce2_smbus :00:03.2: Error probing SMB2.) in
dmesg.0 while in dmesg no such line can be found. Do you think it could
be some sort of race condition on communicating with the nForce2 chipset
between the nForce2 driver and nvidia's proprietary graphics driver? (It
is a black box, it could be touching who knows what.)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 440233] Re: fglrx fails at startup because of missing amdpcsdb.default + removal leaves bad settings in Xorg.conf

2010-05-30 Thread Zhao Zheng
Bryan,

Thanks for your explanation. I now see that my /var/lib/dkms/fglrx
folder is actually deleted when the installer found error. But I managed
to copy it from the source /usr/src/fglrx-8.723. Then I run 'sudo sh
make.sh --nohints --uname_r=2.6.32-22-generic --norootcheck' at
termnial. I changed the kernel version from 2.6.31-14 to 2.6.32-22 and
now I see message 'build succeeded with return value 0'. However,
nothing really changed after this 'make'.

I have noticed that the file size you listed for libfglrx_ip* are 3MB but the
ones I have is only 2MB:
-rw-r--r-- 1 root src 2354408 2010-05-30 12:19 libfglrx_ip.a.GCC3
-rw-r--r-- 1 root src 2354408 2010-05-30 12:19 libfglrx_ip.a.GCC4
All the other file sizes are the same. Is it possible that you post these files
so that I can give them a try?

Post #48 suggests to link /etc/ati to /usr/lib/fglrx/etc/ati. But in my
/usr/lib there is no such a folder called fglrx.

I also compared my xorg.conf with Post #44. Did not see meaningful
differences.

In the meantime, I also made a fresh USB installer from a new download
of Lucid. I tried to install the driver there and was hoping to get some
good copy. But in the end it is the same.

I also tried to install the driver using Jockey-gtk as discussed by post
#14 and #43. I then ended up the same as using Synaptic, i.e. only a
broken fglrxamdccc installed but not the real fglrx driver.

I now feel it really hurt to update my Lucid...

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 585765] Re: Ubuntu 10.04 random freezes

2010-05-30 Thread Tech2010
I believe I see both of these conditions on the Intel dual-core Atom
N330 motherboard.

I have a monitor with both DVI and VGA inputs. The board in question
uses the VGA input. Fairly frequently, when I switch from DVI use back
to VGA use, the screensaver is active. But the system is frozen.
Pressing the CAPS LOCK key does not light the caps-lock light on the
keyboard. The mouse does not work. At first, I thought USB was dead,
but I cannot ssh to the box and a ping after that results in the report
the system id down. A front-panel reset is all that revives the system.
This is not new with 10.04, but seems very frequent with 10.04 now.

A second observation of a different scenario is that at times I seem to
be unable to use the keyboard, nor can I use the mouse inside an
application window, but I can use the mouse to launch new applications.
If I select the System Monitor, for example, it will launch, but I
cannot select a specific process. However, I beleive that when I used a
right-click, things started working again (memory foggy - it was late).

Most, but not all, of my lockups involve Thunderbird email being active,
but not all. I also had VirtualBox installed, until I read this thread
moments ago. Also, on a probably-unrelated sidenote, I use a ReadyNAS
NAS unit. At some point, once of my systems, possibly this one, started
waking the ReadyNAS every few minutes. I don't know if the nfs driver
is doing something strange on this host, but that was not the normal
ReadyNAS behavior on a system that was sitting idle.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 484875] Re: Nvidia GPU overheating on Toshiba P100

2010-05-30 Thread WeatherGod
** Also affects: acpi (Ubuntu)
   Importance: Undecided
   Status: New

** Changed in: acpi (Ubuntu)
   Status: New = Confirmed

** Description changed:

- Toshiba Satellite P100 PSP-A3C laptop, Nvidia GeForce Go 7600, running
- Karmic 2.6.31-15, Nvidia proprietary driver 185.
+ *** Problem *
+ Toshiba Satellite P100 PSP-A3C laptop, Nvidia GeForce Go 7600, running Karmic
2.6.31-15, Nvidia proprietary driver 185.

GNOME-Sensors applet reports CPU stable at about 60 C, GPU climbs slowly
up to about 90 C, then the system shuts down.

On 9.04, I had the same problem, but I was able to load a custom DSDT,
after which the fan ran properly, and the system stayed cool, GPU around
65 C. Also stays cool under Windows XP.

I understand that it is not possible to load a custom DSDT under karmic,
  so I need another solution.
+
+ Possible Fix **
+ After some more hacking in DSDT, Yann found that fan control is located in
ACPI EC (embedded controller) address space : VTMP acpi byte in acpi EC bit
field, at offest 0x5E.
+
+ Yann found some similar concerns on some acer laptops (having the same
+ WMI related acpi methods, located in device AMW0), and with a perl
+ script that Yann was able to modify in order to setup a constant fan
+ speed. That perl script is attached to this report.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 201491] Re: Screen DPI detected incorrectly by xdpyinfo

2010-05-30 Thread Phill
I've got a similar issue, but not sure if it's exactly the same cause.
My Xorg.0.log file starts with the right idea and changes its mind at
the end.

Initially it looks OK with these log lines showing correct values:
(II) intel(0): Max Image Size [cm]: horiz.: 38 vert.: 30
(II) intel(0): clock: 108.0 MHz Image Size: 376 x 301 mm
(**) intel(0): Display dimensions: (380, 300) mm
(**) intel(0): DPI set to (85, 86)

Then, towards the end it changes it's mind, only the one line I can see:
(II) intel(0): Setting screen physical size to 338 x 270

(I'll attach the full file after this comment). This gives you about
96x96 dpi I think, which is what xdpyinfo reports.

I use xrandr -dpi 85 to get around the problem (fixes document-viewer
and GIMP), and change the DPI settings in gnome (fixes window fonts).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 585853] Re: [Lucid] Not possible to use xdm, only can use gdm

2010-05-30 Thread Patrick Welche
Now I see how I was lucky in 7:

If you run gdm, kill it, then xdm will work.
Somehow gdm manages to initialise drm, ie avoids:

(EE) intel(0): [drm] failed to set drm interface version.
(EE) intel(0): Failed to become DRM master.

So simply, I had a some stage run gdm = xdm thereafter, no matter what
I tried, would work.

Any clues anyone? (This is an intel (xdriinfo says i965) which I think
means that the X driver needs kernel support. What stumps me, is that
gdm works, therefore the kernel support must be there, and the driver OK
- but what is the difference between the way gdm calls Xorg and the way
xdm calls it?)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 586968] Re: Mouse dies for entire KVM switch when 10.04 / Lucid machine connected to the switch boots

2010-05-30 Thread Michael Lueck
Might be nvidia-graphics-drivers* as both machines have binary nVidia
drivers installed. Not sure if they are exactly the same version though.
The sample files I uploaded were from a ThinkPad G41 which is a few
years old. The other machine was a ThinkPad W700. Both with nVidia chips
and both running the binary drivers via the Ubuntu installer for
Restricted Drivers.

This report is for 915gm chips, not 945 chips. The error message is also a
generic one for an X failure. Please file a new bug report by running
ubuntu-bug xserver-xorg-video-intel in a terminal immediately after a
crash.

It would be better still if it allows you to change to a tty session with
Ctrl+Alt+F1, run sudo service gdm stop then startx and then ubuntu-bug
xserver-xorg-video-intel.

Thank you.

After booting, I stop gdm, then if I do sudo gdm I see a blank screen

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 577566] Re: kernel updates ALWAYS breaks video drivers

2010-05-30 Thread Douglas Moyes
Unfortunately that system has already been shipped. It'll be some time
before I get around to doing a clean install on any of my existing
systems.

Regardless, the system had a clean install at first, and when the update
utility was allowed to upgrade the system (including the linux kernel
header files), the video stopped working. Also, when the system had a
clean install, the nvidia package claimed the driver was being built,
but it still didn't update the current kernel.

The supported drivers do not work well with nVidia cards, and offer a
very limited (800x600) resolution which is unacceptable.

So there you go. The problem is most likely in the package's build
process. I'm sure any log files would tell you something similar.

nVidia was the first of the major 3d accelerated video card
manufacturers to support linux with stable drivers, ATI came later. Even
still, nVidia will remain a favorite among many Linux users, and not
supporting the drivers is foolish. While old time linux users won't have
much of a problem working around that, newer Linux users will be
completely lost and will be scratching their heads wondering why their
video stopped working (which is also what happened with my client when
the update utility decided it was time to update the kernel again).

If anything, a simple fix would be to disable auto-updates of the kernel
by default. If a system works, there is generally no reason to update
the kernel.

Dist-upgrade to 10.4 from 9.10 on my notebook resulted in breaking my
wifi card. reverting back to the older kernel fixed everything. Just an
example (it's a RaLink card). But that's for another bug.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 546578] Re: black screen after a few user switches

2010-05-30 Thread Robert B
This is still a problem for me with gnome-screensaver 2.30.0-0ubuntu2.
I have an Acer Aspire 5740-5513, which various websites say is an Intel
GMA video card.

My workaround is to essentially disable gnomesaver by sudo mv /usr/bin
/gnome-screensaver /usr/bin/gnome-screensaver.bak.

I hope whatever new version of gnome-screensaver comes out fixes this
problem.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 587636] [NEW] Xorg 100% CPU usage with HTML5 video in Firefox [Radeon KMS]

2010-05-30 Thread Øyvind Stegard
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

HTML5 videos embedded in web pages in a certain way are unusably slow
with Radeon KMS and cause xorg process to use 100% CPU.

Examples of web pages with videos that cripple Xorg:
http://www.dailymotion.com/openvideodemo
http://hacks.mozilla.org/2010/04/account-manager-coming-to-firefox/
http://videos.videoonwikipedia.org/

There is no crash, and situation is recoverable if web page with video
is closed and/or video stopped and not in view.

There is an upstream bug report here:
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=27139

There seems to be a problem with how Firefox uses Xrender and how this
is implemented in the Xorg driver, which causes usage of software
fallbacks.

I would guess this bug causes many web pages with HTML5 video to become
unusable in Ubuntu Lucid+Firefox for users of ATI graphics cards with
radeon-KMS driver. I found no Ubuntu bug report tracking this problem,
so I'm reporting it now.

I've got an ATI X1400 (r500) card, but this also affects r600 (from
upstream report).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 585870] Re: GDM logs out randomly

2010-05-30 Thread Michael
This only happened once. I have concluded the crash was caused by a
group of related Inkscape bugs (start at Inkscape bug #300888) that are
known to cause crashes. I'm addressing them upstream.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 556872] Re: [lucid] [nouveau] blank screen on Dell Latitude E6410 (NVS 3100M [10de:0a6c])

2010-05-30 Thread raboof
The blank screen is caused by the nouveau BIOS code not understanding
the 0x3A opcode.

Support for this opcode has been added in
http://cgit.freedesktop.org/nouveau/linux-2.6/commit/?id=877c1854cbc3f72c5e9948e5ff5a8f7e9d874d2e
. This patch has not made it into 2.6.34, but it is in 2.6.34-git16.

I can confirm that with the 2.6.34-git16 kernel with nouveau included,
the screen no longer blanks on startup, and X works with the non-
proprietary nouveau driver out of the box.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 541511] Re: MASTER: [i855] GPU lockup (apport-crash)

2010-05-30 Thread Nick Sharp
It is good to see some folk getting 10.04+855GM working using various
new kernels, but I expect I am not alone in saying that I am unlikely to
load 10.04 on my 855GM Toshiba Satellite A10 (still 9.04 after a poor
experience with 9.10 also) until:

1 Upstream release a newer kernel that works really well with 855GM (IF it's
possible) and is ...
2 ... cut into Ubuntu 10.04 as a respin, so that I can simply download the CD,
install and enjoy

I might just about cope with a special install (boot time options re
vesa, 915 nosplash etc), provided that an immediately following update
pulls the new kernel and leaves the machine perfect from then on!

I expect there are many who want to convert from the dark side who would
not be prepared to do even that.

In the meantime I am actually considering refreshing the Toshiba with a
repeat install of 9.04 (I like to do a clean reload every year or so,
even with Ubuntu but especially of W... you know what).

If 1 and possibly 2 does not happen, I am likely to move the ~8 year old
Toshiba back to its original WXP and find someone else who wants it. I
never had any screen trouble with it under WXP.

I believe 855GM has some fundamental flaws, and it certainly has some
limitations that have begun to annoy me as high resolution second
screens become available, namely its max 2048x2048 virtual display
space. For nice intuitive use, you REALLY do want a second screen that
is on the right hand side of the desk also to be VIRTUALLY on the right
hand side of the laptop screen, and that cannot happen with 855GM if the
second screen is more than 1024 wide (hard to get one as small as that
now!!).

So for me, perhaps it is time to retire the Toshiba to light duties
elsewhere, and move on. Sad for one like me who likes to squeeze the
last reasonable drop of use out of everything!! And for me it has been
a very good machine.

All the best to the gurus working on this!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 567696] Re: [Radeon] [Lucid] [mi] EQ overflowing. The server is probably stuck in an infinite loop

2010-05-30 Thread Barney Livingston
I too am seeing the very same symptoms, it's happened several times.
Machine is a Thinkpad T60 with Radeon Mobility X1400. I have KMS turned
off with a kernel option because it was causing a lot of problems.

Xorg.0.log contained [mi] EQ overflowing. The server is probably stuck
in an infinite loop. and a stack trace implicating radeon_drv.so and
libglx.so. Next time it happens I'll make sure to keep a copy of the
stack trace.

Also syslog contains:
May 30 20:36:30 jarvis kernel: [60546.074216] Uhhuh. NMI received for unknown
reason b0 on CPU 0.
May 30 20:36:30 jarvis kernel: [60546.074222] You have some hardware problem,
likely on the PCI bus.
May 30 20:36:30 jarvis kernel: [60546.074225] Dazed and confused, but trying to
continue

Seems to happen after a day or so of use, possibly always after a
suspend/resume. Suddenly the pointer goes slow and no input works, not
even the likes of ctrl-alt-delete nor ctrl-alt-f1. Since GLX is
implicated I'm trying turning off compositing to see if it happens
again.
