[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 601366] [NEW] Xorg freeze
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg So, my X session suddenly became stuck. I was moving around the mouse cursor with the touchpad when it froze. I was using Firefox and about to click on a tab. I happened to have had an opportunity to log into this laptop from a desktop (via ssh) and poke around. I first killed the gnome-session. No go. Then, I tried killing X. It wouldn't die -- a ps revealed D, as in it was waiting on a device (it wasn't clear which device). I killed the parent gdm process, but X was still around and the screen still frozen. Since killing X was impossible (and therefore CTL-ALT-F1 not an option), I did a sudo reboot to reboot the system. I should note that I had logged off my session and logged on a few times. I don't usually do this. I was hoping to get the touchpad wheel scrolling to work better (it's too slow) in my VNC client, but logging off and on didn't help. (FWIW, I'm wondering if this is related to my previously reported https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-screensaver/+bug/587668 regarding blank screen freezes.) $ lsb_release -rd Description:Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Release:10.04 $ apt-cache policy xorg xorg: Installed: 1:7.5+5ubuntu1 Candidate: 1:7.5+5ubuntu1 Version table: *** 1:7.5+5ubuntu1 0 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 10.04 Package: xorg 1:7.5+5ubuntu1 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 2.6.32-23.37-generic-pae 2.6.32.15+drm33.5 Uname: Linux 2.6.32-23-generic-pae i686 Architecture: i386 Date: Sat Jul 3 06:11:01 2010 InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx - Alpha i386 (20100213) Lsusb: Bus 002 Device 003: ID 064e:a103 Suyin Corp. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 601370] [NEW] unable to change scaling mode (thinkpad t410, lucid, intel arrandale graphics)
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel I have a T410 that I want to use for a presentation. Because the built-in LCD has a higher resolution (1440x900) than the projector, I want to set the LCD resolution to something lower (likely 1024x768), and then mirror its contents on the projector. The problem I run in to is that when I set the resolution on the LCD to 1024x768, the screen contents are stretched to fit the entire screen. Since the aspect ratios differ (4:3 for the projector, and 16:10 for the LCD), this display is distorted on the LCD. I've tried changing the scaling mode with xrandr, as follows: $ xrandr --output LVDS1 --set scaling mode Center But that does not fix the problem. While it does not report any errors (either on the console, or in Xorg.0.log), it also does not change how the display. Alpha 2 linux 2.6.35-6 still has the same problems, on i845G requires i915.modeset=0 in linux boot line and Driver vesa in xorg.conf otherwise X hangs big time. Alpha 2 CD Live did boot without these workarounds. It had one recovered crash which I reported, didn't copy the bug #, seemed to be the usual Gtk failure. Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg I created an /usr/lib/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-logitechmouse.conf file, and it is working fine, but since a configuration file does not belong in the /usr directory, I tried moving it to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-logitechmouse.conf. [Report] Binary package hint: xserver-xorg When I first installed Lucid on my T500 I believe everything seemd to be fine with the display. Recently though the screen has started giving flashes -- as though there was some form of sync problem for the display. The flashes are of irregular frequency and occurrence. I haven't yet seen any pattern to the behaviour. They are however exceptionally annoying. I believe I am using the Intel chipset graphics device -- I am not actually aware of how to switch to using the alternate graphics hardware, but I am told it is not worth bothering with, so I haven't. I am using the Compiz window manager so I guess the problem could be there rather than with Xorg. There is no xorg.conf file so there is no overide of the default behaviour. I am not sure what programs to run to give useful output for this problem. @jean-Baptiste Wait a minute, I remember... u...@ubuntu:~$ sudo dpkg-divert --remove /usr/lib/libGL.so.1.2 That is the command I issued after inspecting my command history, libGL.so.1.2 must have been the package I removed from being diverted to fglrx. I must tell you, I did an in place upgrade from 9.04, ran all the updates, then to 9.10, all the updates, then upgraded to 10.04, all in a couple of days, fyi. Someone told me to remove fglrx, so I tried couple things which didn't work, u...@ubuntu:~$ sudo dpkg --purge fglrx --force-depends fglrx and u...@ubuntu:~$ sudo apt-get remove --purge *fglrx* and u...@ubuntu:~$ sudo dpkg --ignore-depends=fglrx --purge fglrx those didn't work I then did u...@ubuntu:~$ dpkg -l '*fglrx*' which currently shows: Desired=Unknown/Install/Remove/Purge/Hold | Status=Not/Inst/Cfg-files/Unpacked/Failed-cfg/Half-inst/trig-aWait/Trig-pend |/ Err?=(none)/Reinst-required (Status,Err: uppercase=bad) ||/ NameVersion Description +++-===-===-== ii fglrx 2:8.723.1-0ubuntu4 Video driver for the ATI graphics accelerators ii fglrx-amdcccle 2:8.723.1-0ubuntu4 Catalyst Control Center for the ATI graphics accelerat un fglrx-control none (no description available) un fglrx-control-qt2 none (no description available) un fglrx-kernel-source none (no description available) ii fglrx-modaliases2:8.723.1-0ubuntu4 Identifiers supported by the ATI graphics driver un xorg-driver-fglrx none (no description available) And I don't remember exactly what it showed earlier, but I know the top line was different, not ii, but a captial U and a lower case i possibly, I could be wrong, but I do remember it being a capitol letter, don't remember what it was or which letter. I think it was telling me that fglrx was installed, but not correctly, since I couldn't enable compiz, it was like it was half way installed, and it wouldn't let me uninstall fglrx. Here's more fyi: u...@ubuntu:~$ lspci -nn | grep VGA 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: ATI Technologies Inc RV770 [Radeon HD 4850] [1002:9442] -- package fglrx (not installed) failed to install/upgrade: subprocess new pre-installation script returned error exit status 1 - inst_path_default or inst_path_override does not exist in /etc/ati when ATI Drivers are previously installed https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/565407 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to fglrx-installer in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
