[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 608036] [NEW] nvidia-current 195.36.24 fails to start X server when no display connected
Public bug reported: nvidia-current 195.36.24 has completely different and fatal behavior (compared to nvidia-173) when started with no display attached to the graphics card. For some bizarre reason Nvidia has changed the default behavior (from assuming by default a "CRT" output with 1kx768 resolution) to now refusing to start the X server. This makes a remote session using "vino" or other VNC server impossible. The original behavior, that of starting the X server, can be obtained by adding the line: Option "ConnectedMonitor" "CRT" to either the "Device" or "Screen" section of the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. Be warned that running nvidia-xconfig will erase this line from the configuration file if you run it, and running "nvidia-xconfig --virtual" will not insert it. Below is a section of release notes for a related package that has the relevant details obtained from http://lists.pcbsd.org/pipermail/testing/2010-March/003860.html This was at one time available from http://www.nvidia.com/object/freebsd_195.36.08.html but not any more. * Altered NVIDIA X driver behavior in the case that no display devices are connected to the GPU.Previously, in this case, the NVIDIA X driver would pretend a CRT was connected to the GPU. Now, the NVIDIA X driver will not automatically pretend that any CRTs are connected. If the X driver does not detect any connected display devices, the X server will fail to start. To restore the old behavior, use the ConnectedMonitor X configuration option; e.g., Option "ConnectedMonitor" "CRT" Alternatively, if display is not desired, Quadro and Tesla GPU users can enable "NoScanout" mode, which bypasses any mode timing validation or use of display devices; this is configured with: Option "UseDisplayDevice" "none" ** Affects: nvidia-graphics-drivers (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: regression -- nvidia-current 195.36.24 fails to start X server when no display connected https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/608036 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to nvidia-graphics-drivers in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 574654] Re: Typing in Kile causes high Xorg CPU usage
That switching to software rasterization improved performance is proof that something in the X stack is causing the poor performance, as the Qt raster renderer is pure software, except for pushing the pixels to the server. You have been subscribed to a public bug: The bug I was having with Lucid is best described at http://idyllictux.wordpress.com/ A black screen persists for most of boot-up, showing no progress; then an ugly blast of colored lines followed by a Plymouth screen for a second or two before going to a login screen. What's expected is to see the Plymouth screen and a progression of dots as things proceed. My elderly laptop has the following video: lspci | grep -i vga 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] 661/741/760 PCI/AGP or 662/761Gx PCIE VGA Display Adapter My kernel is as follows: cat /proc/version Linux version 2.6.32-22-generic (bui...@rothera) (gcc version 4.4.3 (Ubuntu 4.4.3-4ubuntu5) ) #33-Ubuntu SMP Wed Apr 28 13:27:30 UTC 2010 I had earlier solved a different Plymouth problem, a nasty hangup at fsck, by upgrading mountall, which now is: mountall --version mountall 2.15 Copyright (C) 2010 Canonical Ltd. The blackscreen at the first part of Plymouth was finally solved simply by using synaptic to install the v86d package. No other tweaks were necessary to get past the black screen phenomenon and see the progression of dots as things proceed. This may have brought boot-up down to 56 seconds from 60 as well. Incidentally, the synaptic install does its own initramfs revision to incorporate v86d. In my case I don't get vesafb or uvesafb, but at least the black screen is gone. ** Affects: getdeb.net Importance: Undecided Status: Invalid ** Affects: xserver-xorg-video-sis (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Old SiS video needs v86d for Lucid Plymouth https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/584339 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-sis in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

After upgrade to Lucid, it occures after some minutes or tens of minutes the CRT is powered off (I didn't found some pattern yet, first I thought that it happens after some inactivity and activating sleep mode, but this happened even I watched a movie with CRT off, there was no sleep mode between off and on). [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 574814] Re: virtual console broken
It turns out that this is related to kms. Each of the following 3 actions "fixes" it: 1. Add nomodeset to kernel boot options, or 2. Add radeon.modeset=0 to kernel boot options, or 3. Add "options radeon modeset=0" to a modprobe.d config file Using workaround #3 allowed me to get debug output of the problem. I stopped X, removed the radeon module, and then inserted it using modprobe radeon modeset=1. This instantly blanked the virtual console that I was typing in, and logged the messages below: Jul 20 19:27:28 hitchhiker kernel: [ 148.952280] [drm] radeon kernel modesetting enabled. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 607551] Re: nvidia drivers not working
Hey Harry, thanks for the suggestions. I tried uninstalling/reinstalling the nvidia-current package with no success. I also tried to run the nvidia-xconfig tool, also unsuccessfully. I don't think I'm using too recent xorg packages because I've just been updating this system regularly. To make sure, I'm attaching a list of the xorg packages installed on this system. Sadly, to see anything, I have to go into safe mode, remove the nvidia packages, make the xorg.conf use a failsafe driver and then reboot. Incidentally, it's how I was able to file this bug report, except that after I booted up and logged in to my gnome session, I installed the nvidia packages so I could run 'ubuntu-bug nvidia-current' in a terminal so I'm not sure all the information coincides with the problem. If I can figure out how to get the crash and then file the bug in the crashed state I would do that if the information in this bug is not enough. Thanks again for the suggestions. ** Attachment added: "installed xorg packages" http://launchpadlibrarian.net/52224094/xorg.txt -- nvidia drivers not working https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/607551 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to nvidia-graphics-drivers in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 607926] [NEW] video players (totem, vlc) crash during video mode change when using Xv and compiz
Public bug reported: If video is playing during a video mode change, the player application will crash, under certain conditions. To reproduce: Using Lucid, nvidia drivers 195, and compiz. Play any video in any video player, such as totem or compiz. While the video is playing, change video mode, either via gnome-display-properties, or xrandr (in some cases it may be necessary to change video mode twice). The video player will crash. What I expect to happen: The video player doesn't crash. Notes: This only happens if compiz is in use; the bug is not present with metacity. It only happens if Xv is used for video; if you turn off Xv via gstreamer-properties, totem will not crash during mode switch (although vlc still will; presumably, it ignores that particular setting). This didn't happen under Jaunty with a similar configuration, and so is a regression. So this looks like some ugly interaction between Xv, compiz, and nvidia. Additional note: The player will also crash if it is active during a suspend-to-RAM/resume operation, presumably because resume involves a video mode change. In that case, however, there is an additional problem, which is that after the resume (only if a video player was running at the time of suspend!), Xorg consumes huge amounts of RAM and CPU time, and system responsiveness is seriously degraded, requiring a complete system restart (restarting Xorg does not suffice). I don't know if this is a different symptom of the same bug or a separate bug. The error message produced by totem when it crashes is: The program 'totem' received an X Window System error. This probably reflects a bug in the program. The error was 'BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)'. (Details: serial 507 error_code 11 request_code 133 minor_code 19) (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously; that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it. To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.) [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 554569] Re: [lucid] Blank screen with KMS on Thinkpad X201 with Arrandale (i915)
@Ray Wang Thanks for the reply. Now I tried as you explained and I also selected the right kernel at the boot procedure. So here's what happend: No black screen anymore (yeah) but a blinking cursor remains for ever. However, now the brightness keys are working. Really got frustrated by this "bug"... :o( -- [lucid] Blank screen with KMS on Thinkpad X201 with Arrandale (i915) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/554569 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is the registrant for xf86-video-intel. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

If I allow the startup process to continue without interference to change options, I eventually end up with a blank screen, no response to mouse or keyboard except for ctrl-alt-del, which preforms a shutdown. ctrl-alt-f1 will not bring up a terminal either. When I turn on the 'nomodeset' boot option I can see the boot splash, can ESC out of it and see boot text. However, I get what appears to be corrupted, colored text for a split second and then kernel panic (caps & scroll lock blinking) with black screen. The other options in the live boot option screen do not seem to make an appreciable difference. With my moderate amount of linux experience, I'm going to postulate that this is a graphics chipset driver issue because of the display corruption and the fact that 'nomodeset' at least improves the boot experience. The graphics chipset is an Intel chip: Mobile Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD Mobile Intel® GS45 Express Chipset I hope that I am in error in reporting this bug, but I have tried all the tricks that I could think of to get it to boot and have failed. - --- + --- Architecture: amd64 DistroRelease: Ubuntu 10.10 DkmsStatus: Error: [Errno 2] No such file or directory InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 10.10 "Maverick Meerkat" - Alpha amd64 (20100630.2) MachineType: Sony Corporation VPCY2190X Package: xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.11.0-1ubuntu2 PackageArchitecture: amd64 ProcCmdLine: BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.35-6-generic root=UUID=34d429a1-414a-4d00-ae97-31d2243fe69f ro nomodeset xforceve

Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati Came to work today to be greeted by the classic gray screen with the "X" cursor. Exploring the logs I found a number of messages in multiple logs related to an Xorg segfault ( kern.log, messages, Xorg.failsafe.log, syslog) After reading a related bug item, I tried removing quiet splash from the boot config, but this did not work either. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 589250] Re: Unable to resolve function glX...
Right. The current alternatives system via ld.so.conf.d is easier to maintain and a bit less fragile than our previous system. It does have the problem that software with a fixed search path, or that doesn't use the linker, will not work. For those, I suggest the symlink workaround. We can't easily or reliably provide this workaround in the packages, but it's safe for systems where you know the hardware. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 607783] [NEW] VGA port not working on Dell Latitude E6510 (arrandale, Intel Core i5)
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel I cannot hook up an external monitor or beamer to my Dell Latitude E6510 using the VGA port. When I open the "monitors" dialogue, the screen goes black if there is a VGA cable plugged in. Only alt-sysrq-REISUB works to restart the computer. The chip is an intel one (intel core i5), not nvidia. I tried the xorg-edgers PPA to see if newer packages fix the problem, but that is not the case. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 541492] Re: MASTER: [i845] GPU lockup (apport-crash) (Should KMS be blacklisted?)
Hi Tim, unfortunately I do not have your hardware, so I have to imagine what I would do. First I would blacklist all (!!!) drivers found in the /lib/modules/xxx/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/rt2x00 directories of Brian Rogers kernels, where xxx is e.g. 2.6.35rc5-nopatch1-generic for one of his latest build. I.e. you make a file /etc/modprobe.d/rt2870.conf containing blacklist rt2x00lib blacklist rt2x00pci ... and so on, including the rt2800usb and reboot. If one of these steps works you are done and do not have to continue. If your wlan stick is not recognized, unplug it and plug it in again. If that has not worked load the module by hand, i.e. sudo modprobe rt2870sta (the module's name is rt2870sta also usb_core claims to have loaded the rt2870 driver) If that has worked you may add rt2870sta to /etc/modules if not I don't know. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 607732] [NEW] Xorg using up CPU and only reboot solves problem
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel Originally raised as a question here: https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video- intel/+question/116345 Problem symptoms: Visting a given webpage results in a java process that increases its CPU% to 100%. When the browser is closed and the java process is killed the "Xorg" process uses up much more CPU than average, approximately 30-70%. The whole desktop responds very sluggishly and all applications are slow to open and respond. dropping out to a tty session (CTRL+ALT+F1) and restarting gdm just sees the problem return. If I stop gdm and wait approximately 15mins and then restart gdm everything goes back to normal. Also if I leave the desktop for a very long time (approximately 1 hour) things do settle down again and the responsiveness of the desktop resumes to normal. Steps to reproduce: 1. Boot up PC and login to desktop as normal 2. Login to VPN 3. Open firefox 4. Visit the problem website (internal site at my work, if I find a public one that invokes the same issue then I'll post it here) 5. Use top to see the java process ramp up to 100% CPU, let this settle for a couple of minutes 6. Close firefox and kill the java process 7. Try to use some desktop applications, keep an eye on the terminal session running "top" and make a note of how much CPU is used each time you try to start another application (i.e. another terminal) ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 10.04 Package: xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.9.1-3ubuntu5 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 2.6.32-23.37-generic 2.6.32.15+drm33.5 Uname: Linux 2.6.32-23-generic x86_64 NonfreeKernelModules: wl Architecture: amd64 Date: Tue Jul 20 13:20:57 2010 DkmsStatus: bcmwl, 5.60.48.36+bdcom, 2.6.32-22-generic, x86_64: installed bcmwl, 5.60.48.36+bdcom, 2.6.32-23-generic, x86_64: installed bcmwl, 5.60.48.36+bdcom, 2.6.32-21-generic, x86_64: installed virtualbox-ose, 3.1.6, 2.6.32-22-generic, x86_64: installed virtualbox-ose, 3.1.6, 2.6.32-23-generic, x86_64: installed InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 10.04 LTS "Lucid Lynx" - Release amd64 (20100429) MachineType: Dell Inc. First symptom was that totem player was shutting down without comment after it had opened an video which I had already watched before. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 554839] Re: Using multimedia/function keys clears xset repeat settings
I have it too on Xubuntu 10.04 and ASUS Eee PC 1001PX. I use xmodmap to fix keyboard layout a little, then `xset r 105` to set repeat for the left arrow, which is former Ctrl key. It works, but after I press one of the several (not all) of the keys with special function with Fn modifier, repeat is disabled again. These keys include for example two brightness shifting keys and NumLK. -- Using multimedia/function keys clears xset repeat settings https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/554839 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-input-evdev in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
