[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 585765] Re: Ubuntu 10.04 random freezes

Could you try to use acpi_skip_timer_override kernel option as suggested
by Hqxriven at
http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=9612800&postcount=731 ? It seems
to be working for me for now - 3 hours uptime.

2010-07-20 Thread Tim Hallett
Thanks Mike, I'll give the modprobe command a try. If the module is really
loaded in 2.6.35 then it should come online.
Hopefully the wireless driver integration will be up to the usual standards by
time of release.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 608036] [NEW] nvidia-current 195.36.24 fails to start X server when no display connected

2010-07-20 Thread Craig Hansen
Public bug reported:

nvidia-current 195.36.24 has completely different and fatal behavior
(compared to nvidia-173) when started with no display attached to the
graphics card. For some bizarre reason Nvidia has changed the default
behavior (from assuming by default a "CRT" output with 1kx768
resolution) to now refusing to start the X server. This makes a remote
session using "vino" or other VNC server impossible.

The original behavior, that of starting the X server, can be obtained by
adding the line:

Option "ConnectedMonitor" "CRT"

to either the "Device" or "Screen" section of the /etc/X11/xorg.conf
file.

Be warned that running nvidia-xconfig will erase this line from the
configuration file if you run it, and
running "nvidia-xconfig --virtual" will not insert it.

Below is a section of release notes for a related package that has the relevant
details obtained from
http://lists.pcbsd.org/pipermail/testing/2010-March/003860.html
This was at one time available from
http://www.nvidia.com/object/freebsd_195.36.08.html
but not any more.

* Altered NVIDIA X driver behavior in the case that no display
devices are connected to the GPU.Previously, in this case, the
NVIDIA X driver would pretend a CRT was connected to the GPU. Now,
the NVIDIA X driver will not automatically pretend that any CRTs
are connected. If the X driver does not detect any connected
display devices, the X server will fail to start.
To restore the old behavior, use the ConnectedMonitor X
  configuration option; e.g.,
Option "ConnectedMonitor" "CRT"
Alternatively, if display is not desired, Quadro and Tesla GPU
users can enable "NoScanout" mode, which bypasses any mode timing
validation or use of display devices; this is configured with:
Option "UseDisplayDevice" "none"

 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 574654] Re: Typing in Kile causes high Xorg CPU usage

2010-07-20 Thread Jonathan Thomas
That switching to software rasterization improved performance is proof
that something in the X stack is causing the poor performance, as the Qt
raster renderer is pure software, except for pushing the pixels to the
server. The proprietary nvidia drivers are notorious for having crappy
glyph rendering performance, so I'd suspect that the issue most likely
lies there.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 557684] Re: X11 starts on VT 8 instead of VT 7

Actually, xorg does not control what vt it starts up on. And really I
don't think there is any real "rule" that X must be running on one
particular VT vs. any other. 7 is conventional but I don't think it's
required. Anyway, not an X bug.

While it sounds like a legitimate issue, it seems to be kubuntu specific

Perhaps you should speak to the kubuntu folks if it needs implemented at

   Status: Confirmed => In Progress

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: kdebase-workspace

So far I have reproduced this on three machines. If user with admin
privs logs out, no problems. If a user without admin privs logs out the
logout fails to a VT that says (process:310) GLib-WARNING **:
getpwuid_r(): failed due to unknown user id (0).

Trying to switch to a different VT is not successful.

This does not happen when a non-admin user logs out from Gnome (when
  using KDM).

The systems in question all have various Intel video. There was one
report on #kubuntu-devel that the problem was not reproducable on a
  system with nVidia.

Touching the power button results in the plymouth "splash" screen coming
  up and a normal shutdown.
+
+ TEST CASE:
+
+ Create a non-admin user. Log into Kubuntu using this non-admin user.
+ Log out. Log in again. Log out. See the system hang. Restart X.
+ Install the updated package. Restart X. Log into Kubuntu as a non-
+ admin user. Log out. Log in. Log out again. See the system not hang.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 584339] [NEW] Old SiS video needs v86d for Lucid Plymouth

2010-07-20 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

The bug I was having with Lucid is best described at
http://idyllictux.wordpress.com/
A black screen persists for most of boot-up, showing no progress; then an ugly
blast of colored lines followed by a Plymouth screen for a second or two before
going to a login screen. What's expected
is to see the Plymouth screen and a progression of dots as things proceed.

My elderly laptop has the following video:
lspci | grep -i vga
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] 661/741/760
PCI/AGP or 662/761Gx PCIE VGA Display Adapter

My kernel is as follows:
cat /proc/version
Linux version 2.6.32-22-generic (bui...@rothera) (gcc version 4.4.3 (Ubuntu
4.4.3-4ubuntu5) ) #33-Ubuntu SMP Wed Apr 28 13:27:30 UTC 2010

I had earlier solved a different Plymouth problem, a nasty hangup at fsck, by
upgrading mountall, which now is:
mountall --version
mountall 2.15
Copyright (C) 2010 Canonical Ltd.

The blackscreen at the first part of Plymouth was finally solved simply
by using synaptic to install the v86d package. No other tweaks were
necessary to get past the black screen phenomenon and see the
progression of dots as things proceed. This may have brought boot-up
down to 56 seconds from 60 as well. Incidentally, the synaptic install
does its own initramfs revision to incorporate v86d. In my case I don't
get vesafb or uvesafb, but at least the black screen is gone.

You have been subscribed to a public bug:

I have a CRT monitor (1280x1...@85hz) and LCD (1920x1...@60hz) in dual
head configuration. In `Monitor Preferences` I have both monitors (in
Karmic these monitors were identified, after upgrade to Lucid both are
Unknown). I can setup both monitors to have correct resolution and
frequencies, everything works ok until I power off the CRT monitor for
some time. After I power on the CRT monitor, this monitor has often 60Hz
and I have to setup 85Hz again with System->Monitor Preferences. In
Karmic was the same behaviour, but it occured rarely. After upgrade to
Lucid, it occures after some minutes or tens of minutes the CRT is
powered off (I didn't found some pattern yet, first I thought that it
happens after some inactivity and activating sleep mode, but this
happened even I watched a movie with CRT off, there was no sleep mode
between off and on).

AFAIK since Karmic, there is no need to configure xorg.conf, I changed
there nothing (not in Karmic, not in Lucid), here is current xorg.conf
content (interesting these 1205px instead of 1200):

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 590672] [NEW] Blue pixels upon boot

2010-07-20 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

With no apparent cause, when booting from time to time one gets a bunch of blue
pixels on top of a black background before arriving to the KDE login screen in
Ubuntu Lucid Lynx. Ctrl+Alt+Backspace to restart the k graphical manager has no
effect, even when it was previously activated for this distribution. Ctrl+F1
does not grant access to a console terminal. the only course of action is
rebooting. From time to time, this black screen with blue corrupted pixels will
be shown and the the login screen will come up, while other days it just gets
stuck.
The system is an Intel dual core PC with an NVIDIA 8400 GS series video card
and propietary current drivers, running a fresh install of Ubuntu Lucid Lynx
10.04 with KDE installed on top and a "Z X city" theme for the login screen.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 605414] Re: Nouveau in Ubuntu does not work on NVIDIA GeForce 8200M

2010-07-20 Thread Dante
I'd like to nominate this as a serious issue; this is effectively
'bricking' a good deal of computers (mostly laptops) and I've
encountered 5 people (and that's just today!) who have the same card. As
the unit is soldered straight to the motherboard it makes replacement is
a damn sight tricky...

2010-07-20 Thread Alexey Shvetsov
I can reproduce this bug on gentoo with 2.6.34 and 2.6.35-rc5 kernels
both with and without patches from
https://patchwork.kernel.org/patch/108282/
https://patchwork.kernel.org/patch/109959/

Actualy with patches kms framebuffer still garbaged (it filled with
rainbow stripes so i assume that timings for LVDS matrix still wrong)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 574814] Re: virtual console broken

2010-07-20 Thread AlainKnaff
It turns out that this is related to kms.

Each of the following 3 actions "fixes" it:

1. Add nomodeset to kernel boot options, or
2. Add radeon.modeset=0 to kernel boot options, or
3. Add "options radeon modeset=0" to a modprobe.d config file

Using workaround #3 allowed me to get debug output of the problem. I
stopped X, removed the radeon module, and then inserted it using
modprobe radeon modeset=1. This instantly blanked the virtual console
that I was typing in, and logged the messages below:

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 607551] Re: nvidia drivers not working

2010-07-20 Thread José Alburquerque
Hey Harry, thanks for the suggestions. I tried
uninstalling/reinstalling the nvidia-current package with no success. I
also tried to run the nvidia-xconfig tool, also unsuccessfully. I don't
think I'm using too recent xorg packages because I've just been updating
this system regularly. To make sure, I'm attaching a list of the xorg
packages installed on this system.

Sadly, to see anything, I have to go into safe mode, remove the nvidia
packages, make the xorg.conf use a failsafe driver and then reboot.
Incidentally, it's how I was able to file this bug report, except that
after I booted up and logged in to my gnome session, I installed the
nvidia packages so I could run 'ubuntu-bug nvidia-current' in a terminal
so I'm not sure all the information coincides with the problem. If I
can figure out how to get the crash and then file the bug in the crashed
state I would do that if the information in this bug is not enough.
Thanks again for the suggestions.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 607926] [NEW] video players (totem, vlc) crash during video mode change when using Xv and compiz

2010-07-20 Thread Jeff Epstein
Public bug reported:

If video is playing during a video mode change, the player application
will crash, under certain conditions.

To reproduce: Using Lucid, nvidia drivers 195, and compiz. Play any
video in any video player, such as totem or compiz. While the video is
playing, change video mode, either via gnome-display-properties, or
xrandr (in some cases it may be necessary to change video mode twice).
The video player will crash.

What I expect to happen: The video player doesn't crash.

Notes: This only happens if compiz is in use; the bug is not present
with metacity. It only happens if Xv is used for video; if you turn off
Xv via gstreamer-properties, totem will not crash during mode switch
(although vlc still will; presumably, it ignores that particular
setting). This didn't happen under Jaunty with a similar configuration,
and so is a regression. So this looks like some ugly interaction between
Xv, compiz, and nvidia.

Additional note: The player will also crash if it is active during a
suspend-to-RAM/resume operation, presumably because resume involves a
video mode change. In that case, however, there is an additional
problem, which is that after the resume (only if a video player was
running at the time of suspend!), Xorg consumes huge amounts of RAM and
CPU time, and system responsiveness is seriously degraded, requiring a
complete system restart (restarting Xorg does not suffice). I don't know
if this is a different symptom of the same bug or a separate bug.

The error message produced by totem when it crashes is:

The program 'totem' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadAlloc (insufficient resources for operation)'.
  (Details: serial 507 error_code 11 request_code 133 minor_code 19)
  (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)

I will be happy to provide more detailed information of any sort.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 554569] Re: [lucid] Blank screen with KMS on Thinkpad X201 with Arrandale (i915)

2010-07-20 Thread Daniel Schröder
@Ray Wang
Thanks for the reply. Now I tried as you explained and I also selected the
right kernel at the boot procedure. So here's what happend:
No black screen anymore (yeah) but a blinking cursor remains for ever. However,
now the brightness keys are working.
Really got frustrated by this "bug"... :o(

  Laptop: Sony Vaio model: VPCY2190X
Ubuntu Release: 10.04 x64 Live USB as made by the USB Creator tool from
Ubuntu 10.04 x64

I am trying to boot Ubuntu off a live USB stick (no disc drive), but get a
kernel panic or a non-responsive system on every boot.
If I allow the startup process to continue without interference to change
options, I eventually end up with a blank screen, no response to mouse or
keyboard except for ctrl-alt-del, which preforms a shutdown. ctrl-alt-f1 will
not bring up a terminal either. When I turn on the 'nomodeset' boot option I
can see the boot splash, can ESC out of it and see boot text. However, I get
what appears to be corrupted, colored text for a split second and then kernel
panic (caps & scroll lock blinking) with black screen. The other options in
the live boot option screen do not seem to make an appreciable difference.

With my moderate amount of linux experience, I'm going to postulate that
this is a graphics chipset driver issue because of the display
corruption and the fact that 'nomodeset' at least improves the boot
experience. The graphics chipset is an Intel chip:

Mobile Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD
  Mobile Intel® GS45 Express Chipset

I hope that I am in error in reporting this bug, but I have tried all the
tricks that I could think of to get it to boot and have failed.

@Danial, hi, it's very easy, #97 is just a normal deb package, what you
need to do is just run "sudo dpkg -i linux-
image-2.6.32-24-generic_2.6.32-24.39_i386.deb" (if your arch is i386),
and please be noticed that when you reboot, please select the newly
installed kernel entry. :-)

Geir, it hasn't been touched because we have a surfeit of Arrandale bugs
and lots of patches which may or may not fix the issue -- it is just a
matter of workload currently.

But I do now have an Arrandale laptop (at last!) and lots of bugs to try and
reproduce.

2010-07-20 Thread Geir Ove Myhr
In addition to bug 596082, there is also bug 599626 which is very similar. In
that case I gave up and moved to the linux package, since I couldn't find a way
to extract relevant logs. That hasn't been touched for the last two weeks,
though, but I'm afraid this may go the same way eventually. Here are a few
things you may try:
- The things I asked for in the other two bug reports, in case it actually
works for you.
- If you can trigger the bug using `xrandr -q` instead of opening the monitor
dialog, could you try if you get any messages on-screen by running `sleep 5;
xrandr -q` and switching to VT1 with Ctrl-Alt-F1 before 5 seconds? Maybe some
messages will show up on screen then.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 607817] [NEW] Xorg Segfault on boot of latest kernel ( ATI drivers )

2010-07-20 Thread Jeremy Loffredo
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati

Came to work today to be greeted by the classic gray screen with the "X"
cursor.

I did a hard reboot, as none of the typical key combos were working.

On reboot, I was given the message "plymouth main process (###) killed
by SEGV signal 1

This booted me into a root terminal.

Exploring the logs I found a number of messages in multiple logs
related to an Xorg segfault ( kern.log, messages, Xorg.failsafe.log,
syslog)

After reading a related bug item, I tried removing quiet splash from
the boot config, but this did not work either. It looked like
everything booted fine, but I only saw a black screen. The mouse was
not present and the system did not seem to respond to key presses.
Also was not given a login screen.

My next step was to boot to a previous kernel, which worked.

Original booted kernel (Problem)

'Ubuntu, with Linux 2.6.32-23-generic' --class ubuntu --class
gnu-linux --class gnu --class os {
recordfail
insmod lvm
insmod ext2

root=/dev/mapper/Primary-Filesystem ro nomodeset acpi_backlight=vendor

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 589250] Re: Unable to resolve function glX...

2010-07-20 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
Right. The current alternatives system via ld.so.conf.d is easier to
maintain and a bit less fragile than our previous system.

It does have the problem that software with a fixed search path, or that
doesn't use the linker, will not work. For those, I suggest the symlink
workaround. We can't easily or reliably provide this workaround in the
packages, but it's safe for systems where you know the hardware.

I'm marking this as Wont Fix for this reason.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 607783] [NEW] VGA port not working on Dell Latitude E6510 (arrandale, Intel Core i5)

2010-07-20 Thread Corona
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

I cannot hook up an external monitor or beamer to my Dell Latitude E6510 using
the VGA port. When I open the "monitors" dialogue, the screen goes black if
there is a VGA cable plugged in. Only alt-sysrq-REISUB works to restart the
computer.
The chip is an intel one (intel core i5), not nvidia.
I tried the xorg-edgers PPA to see if newer packages fix the problem, but that
is not the case.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 599019] Re: Error with Nouveau 10.04 driver with nVidia Corporation C51 [GeForce 6150 LE] (rev a2)

2010-07-20 Thread Indie
I've got the same graphics card and I'm experiencing exactly the same
problem with the nouveau driver under 10.04

When I boot the ubuntu-desktop ISO I get a 'messed' up version of the
desktop of a previous boot of karmic. The system locks up and the only
way out is through Alt-SysRq.

Even just booting to the terminal with the 'single' option to grub I
get:

nouveau :00:05.0 GPU Lockup - switching to software fbcon

I managed to get 10.04 'working' by installing it from the mini.iso,
blacklisting vga16fb and nouveau and installing nvidia-current.

Don't know if it could be related but mine has a problem with S3 -

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 541492] Re: MASTER: [i845] GPU lockup (apport-crash) (Should KMS be blacklisted?)

2010-07-20 Thread mrickma
Hi Tim,
unfortunately I do not have your hardware, so I have to imagine what I would
do. First I would blacklist all (!!!) drivers found in the
/lib/modules/xxx/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/rt2x00 directories of Brian Rogers
kernels, where xxx is e.g. 2.6.35rc5-nopatch1-generic for one of his latest
build. I.e. you make a file /etc/modprobe.d/rt2870.conf containing
blacklist rt2x00lib
blacklist rt2x00pci
...
and so on, including the rt2800usb and reboot.
If one of these steps works you are done and do not have to continue.
If your wlan stick is not recognized, unplug it and plug it in again.
If that has not worked load the module by hand, i.e. sudo modprobe rt2870sta
(the module's name is rt2870sta also usb_core claims to have loaded the rt2870
driver)
If that has worked you may add rt2870sta to /etc/modules
if not I don't know.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 607732] [NEW] Xorg using up CPU and only reboot solves problem

2010-07-20 Thread ByteSoup
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

Originally raised as a question here:

https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-
intel/+question/116345

Problem symptoms:

Visting a given webpage results in a java process that increases its
CPU% to 100%. When the browser is closed and the java process is killed
the "Xorg" process uses up much more CPU than average, approximately
30-70%. The whole desktop responds very sluggishly and all applications
are slow to open and respond. dropping out to a tty session
(CTRL+ALT+F1) and restarting gdm just sees the problem return. If I stop
gdm and wait approximately 15mins and then restart gdm everything goes
back to normal. Also if I leave the desktop for a very long time
(approximately 1 hour) things do settle down again and the
responsiveness of the desktop resumes to normal.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Boot up PC and login to desktop as normal
2. Login to VPN
3. Open firefox
4. Visit the problem website (internal site at my work, if I find a public one
that invokes the same issue then I'll post it here)
5. Use top to see the java process ramp up to 100% CPU, let this settle for a
couple of minutes
6. Close firefox and kill the java process
7. Try to use some desktop applications, keep an eye on the terminal session
running "top" and make a note of how much CPU is used each time you try to
start another application (i.e. another terminal)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 541492] Re: MASTER: [i845] GPU lockup (apport-crash) (Should KMS be blacklisted?)

2010-07-20 Thread mrickma
Folow up to comment #173
Yesterday evening I had a GPU hang after 24h of squeezing the i845. First
symptom was that totem player was shutting down without comment after it had
opened an video which I had already watched before. Then I logged out and
instead of showing the login screen the computer became unresponsive. I still
could shutdown via ACPI. Unfortunately had no ssh installed so I could not draw
an i915_error_state. I try to attach the critical part of syslog.
I have one freze at a total uptime of 69h on two i845 based computers now with
the 2.6.35rc4-131+ge467e10+nopatch-generic or 2.6.35rc5-nopatch1-generic
kernels and updated drivers. This is certainly much better than what I got with
the 2.6.34-v9patch-generic kernel and standard lucid drivers

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 569271] Re: [RS780 KMS] no poweroff on halt with KMS enabled

2010-07-20 Thread bsgcic
I have 5 HP Touchsmart TX2 laptops. On all of them, when I do shutdown,
the system appears to shutdown but does not actually turn off. This did
not happen in Karmic. It started with 10.04 Lucid. I tried the upstart
job in comment #3. Has no effect. Have to manually press and hold the
power switch in order for each laptop to actually turn off. I have all
updates applied.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 554839] Re: Using multimedia/function keys clears xset repeat settings

2010-07-20 Thread kevind
I have it too on Xubuntu 10.04 and ASUS Eee PC 1001PX.

I use xmodmap to fix keyboard layout a little, then `xset r 105` to set
repeat for the left arrow, which is former Ctrl key. It works, but after
I press one of the several (not all) of the keys with special function
with Fn modifier, repeat is disabled again. These keys include for
example two brightness shifting keys and NumLK.
