[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 601767] Re: Maverick; latest nvidia-current causes video tearing in agp cards

2010-08-03 Thread Doug McMahon
Would also like to add - there are several bugs concerning sluggish
behavior and incorrect rendering with libcairo2 and the 256 nividia
drivers.

Absolutely none of this occurs with the 195 drivers, the gui, compiz,
ect. are all normal, there are no rendering issues using the default
ambience theme.

Yet another reason to consider offering as one of the alt. choices,
though horizontal tearing, which is unacceptable, remains the main
reason.

The latest video drivers are not always the greatest for all, it's true
in windows where it's trivial to change drivers, same in linux where
switching is not so easy.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 555350] Re: [gm45] Glitches appears sometimes on screen. Intel GMA 4500MHD

2010-08-03 Thread grigori
I still seem to have this Problem on a Lenovo 510SL which uses an Intel
GMA 4500HD. Just a short screen flicker. Like in the video. First i
thought it had to do with overheating, but frequency of the occurring
flicker stayed the same, no matter how warm the laptop would get.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 610628] Re: Please merge 261-1 (main) from Debian unstable (main)

2010-08-03 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package xterm - 261-1ubuntu1

---
xterm (261-1ubuntu1) maverick; urgency=low

  * Merge from debian unstable (LP: #610628). Remaining Ubuntu changes:
- Revert the libutempter change because it's in universe. (LP: #539473)
- Enabled URL highlighting
- Add 100_uxterm_utf8_title.patch: Set utf8Titles to true by default
when using uxterm, so that it displays utf8 directories in titles
properly. May cause issues with apps that use control sequences for
updating the xterm titlebar - users should use xterm or set utf8Title
to false in this case. (LP: #320388, #408496)

xterm (261-1) unstable; urgency=low

  * New upstream release
+ fix regression in renderFont logic, from patch #260 changes
  (closes: #587428)

xterm (260-1) unstable; urgency=low

  * New upstream release
+ extend renderFont resource to allow deferred switch to TrueType fonts
without affecting existing resource settings (closes: #585620)
+ change configure script default for --enable-broken-st (i.e., the
brokenStringTerm feature) to normally enable it. If the corresponding
resource is enabled, this feature eliminates an apparent freeze of xterm
when sending mis-encoded data to the screen (closes: #584801)
+ undo a change to limit-check in ScrnRefresh in patch #257, which broke
  fastScroll feature (closes: #584841)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 495553] Re: [K8M800] Lucid 10.04 live-CD login failure, Screen origin shifted to center, screen wraps, ttyN screens don't work, on Averatec 3280 running Lucid

2010-08-03 Thread Peter Belew
I have totally given up on running Ubuntu on this laptop. I have
installed first Fedora 13, and now Debian Lenny. Once properly
installed, the screen issues no longer occur, except that both of those
systems try to run the screen in 1600x1200 mode, so that installing a
custom xorg.conf is also necessary under those distros.

Some distros, such as AntiX, have a boot-time option to select the
initial screen resolution. IMHO ALL distros should do this.

I *may* try future betas on this laptop, but don't intend to install
Ubuntu on it again.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 348052] Re: Race condition in /usr/bin/xvfb-run causes concurrent invocations to fail

2010-08-03 Thread Steffen Neumann
Hi,

I am unsure whether this is fixed in xvfb 2:1.7.6-2ubuntu7.2,
because I am experiencing the symptoms that xvfb fails to start
with multiple concurrent invocations on a single host.
(We're using xvfb-run in job scripts submitted to the gridengine queueing
system,
which schedules as many jobs as cores on one host).

I have attached the output of sh -x xvfb-run, please let me know
if I missed something obvious, or whether I should provide more information,

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 590547] Re: unreadable text in virtual terminals with nvidia binary driver on lucid

2010-08-03 Thread Joe Niski
Apparently this was a problem with my Grub2 configuration , caused by
installing StartupManager, which set the GRUB_GFXMODE parameter in
/etc/default/grub. Commenting that line and running update-grub took
care of the problem.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 605414] Re: Nouveau in Ubuntu does not work on NVIDIA GeForce 8200M

2010-08-03 Thread Dante
10.10 does not work, as a thick black line can be seen under the Ubuntu
loading screen during bootup. However, if I go to the old menu at boot-
up I can launch the Live environment, with the consequence of it
becoming non-functional as soon as I start any application. Visual
corruption can be seen in the same area as where the black line was
during boot up.

Also, I am attempting to recover the xorg logs (after having found out how to
transfer them from the live enviroment to my hard-drive, but sadly the tar.gz
file is corrupted. I should figure it out by tomorrow though.

Thanks for your patience!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 528467] try using other versions of the kernel from ppa

Hi b52. I guess that using kernels with versions 34 and higher should fix this.
You can get it from ppa kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/ Try grabbing
35*, it is stable now. This problem does not happen to me since I installed a
34 version:
uname -a
Linux 2.6.34-020634-generic #020634 SMP Mon May 17 19:27:49 UTC 2010 x86_64
GNU/Linux. My uptimes are long now, occasionally I have to reboot because of
some power outages. Hope it helps
I did turn off screensaver/monitor sleep and use xset dpms 300 300 300
instead in the beginning of every X session

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 613135] [NEW] Can't install fglrx on UNE 10.10 Alpha3 RC ISO

2010-08-03 Thread Tom Pino
Public bug reported:

I would send a screen shot if I could find the app.

I am lucky to be able to find anything as the launch panel is completely
useless. it does have some white blobs and the one that represents
Hardware Drivers wiggles occasionally.

Entire panel currently flickering.

On an installed version I would install the xorg.edgers ppa and would be
able to see this desltop properly.

Was hoping that the fglrx would do the trick but it will not install

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 612742] Re: primary monitor on nvidia dualhead setup won't wake afer sleep.

2010-08-03 Thread Tim
After a bit more testing, I think this actually might be a hardware
issue with my monitor. Testing with a different monitor and the problem
has disappeared so far.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 585765] Re: Ubuntu 10.04 random freezes

2010-08-03 Thread Captain Chaos
Further to my comment #124, I can report that after disabling irqbalance
(about three weeks ago) I have not had random freezes any more. It
definitely seems to be a factor on my system (quad core Intel Core2, 4
GB RAM, 2 NVidia Geforce 8800 GTX's).

Perhaps others could try whether this makes a difference?

C,

That's the hope. Please install the new driver and remove your KMS-
enabling workaround (so you boot into UMS) and report back. I've added
specific instructions for how to do both at [1]. Let me know if you have
any questions.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 605979] Re: Buttons rendered wrong (with white background) with nvidia-current

2010-08-03 Thread Aaron Plattner
Hi Benjamin. This is the first I've heard of this bug, so I'll try to
take a look at it as soon as I can.

Please note that just checking for the NV-CONTROL extension is not
sufficient, because some screens may be using the NVIDIA driver while
others use different drivers. If the extension exists, you can use
XNVCTRLIsNvScreen to query if a given screen is using the NVIDIA driver.
However, please don't do that. I'd much rather just fix the driver if
it's broken then have a driver-specific workaround in place that we need
to get rid of eventually.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 575405] Re: vnc screen does not refresh

2010-08-03 Thread Patrick
Ditto on that. Remote desktop is not usable on 10.04.

I have tried both AMD and Nvidia cards as well as several different
clients. My conclusion it is server side based on the host machine.

I really wish this bug is addressed quickly, I was counting on using
Remote Desktop for all my machines.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 610446] Re: Xorg segmentation fault with Nvidia (ver. 96) driver

2010-08-03 Thread james
I'm also seeing this seg fault, particularly annoying because I would
otherwise run Twinview. I've also tried the Nvidia packages

 NVIDIA-Linux-x86-96.43.16-pkg1.run
and
 NVIDIA-Linux-x86-96.43.18-pkg1.run

and also tried with the older kernel

 2.6.32-21-generic

 - no joy, except that, with the Nvidia 96.43.18 package, there is no
seg fault, but instead, the log file ends with:

 ...
 (II) NVIDIA(0): Initialized GART.
(II) NVIDIA(0): kernel module enabled successfully
 (II) NVIDIA(0): Memory mapped
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to allocate/map the primary surface!

That sort-of sounds like another driver is loaded, but no, there is no
other driver loaded. Still, Xorg dmesg has this to say:

 [ 511.284620] Xorg:3820 conflicting memory types e800-e8d8
write-combining-uncached-minus
 [ 511.284626] reserve_memtype failed 0xe800-0xe8d8, track
write-combining, req write-combining

With 2.6.32-21 and 96.43.16, the log ends like this - with similarity to other
combinations, Segmentation fault at address 0xc:

...
(II) NVIDIA(0): Memory mapped
(II) NVIDIA(0): Using built-in logo image.

Backtrace:
0: /usr/bin/X (xorg_backtrace+0x3b) [0x80e937b]
1: /usr/bin/X (0x8048000+0x61c7d) [0x80a9c7d]
2: (vdso) (__kernel_rt_sigreturn+0x0) [0x7ad410]
Segmentation fault at address 0xc

Caught signal 11 (Segmentation fault). Server aborting

This is on an NV11 [GeForce2 MX/MX 400] dual display, with an AMD
Sempron processor. I've also tried this same card and software on an
older Athlon machine, but same results.
