[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 601767] Re: Maverick; latest nvidia-current causes video tearing in agp cards
Would also like to add - there are several bugs concerning sluggish behavior and incorrect rendering with libcairo2 and the 256 nividia drivers. Absolutely none of this occurs with the 195 drivers, the gui, compiz, ect. are all normal, there are no rendering issues using the default ambience theme. Yet another reason to consider offering as one of the alt. choices, though horizontal tearing, which is unacceptable, remains the main reason. The latest video drivers are not always the greatest for all, it's true in windows where it's trivial to change drivers, same in linux where switching is not so easy. -- Maverick; latest nvidia-current causes video tearing in agp cards https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/601767 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to nvidia-graphics-drivers in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

I have totally given up on running Ubuntu on this laptop. I have installed first Fedora 13, and now Debian Lenny. Once properly installed, the screen issues no longer occur, except that both of those systems try to run the screen in 1600x1200 mode, so that installing a custom xorg.conf is also necessary under those distros. Some distros, such as AntiX, have a boot-time option to select the initial screen resolution. IMHO ALL distros should do this. I *may* try future betas on this laptop, but don't intend to install Ubuntu on it again. -- [K8M800] Lucid 10.04 live-CD login failure, Screen origin shifted to center, screen wraps, ttyN screens don't work, on Averatec 3280 running Lucid https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/495553 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-openchrome in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

Hi Benjamin. This is the first I've heard of this bug, so I'll try to take a look at it as soon as I can. Please note that just checking for the NV-CONTROL extension is not sufficient, because some screens may be using the NVIDIA driver while others use different drivers. If the extension exists, you can use XNVCTRLIsNvScreen to query if a given screen is using the NVIDIA driver. However, please don't do that. I'm also seeing this seg fault, particularly annoying because I would otherwise run Twinview. I've also tried the Nvidia packages NVIDIA-Linux-x86-96.43.16-pkg1.run and NVIDIA-Linux-x86-96.43.18-pkg1.run and also tried with the older kernel 2.6.32-21-generic - no joy, except that, with the Nvidia 96.43.18 package, there is no seg fault, but instead, the log file ends with: ... (II) NVIDIA(0): Initialized GART. (II) NVIDIA(0): kernel module enabled successfully (II) NVIDIA(0): Memory mapped (EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to allocate/map the primary surface! That sort-of sounds like another driver is loaded, but no, there is no other driver loaded. Still, Xorg dmesg has this to say: [ 511.284620] Xorg:3820 conflicting memory types e800-e8d8 write-combining-uncached-minus [ 511.284626] reserve_memtype failed 0xe800-0xe8d8, track write-combining, req write-combining With 2.6.32-21 and 96.43.16, the log ends like this - with similarity to other combinations, Segmentation fault at address 0xc: ... (II) NVIDIA(0): Memory mapped (II) NVIDIA(0): Using built-in logo image. Backtrace: 0: /usr/bin/X (xorg_backtrace+0x3b) [0x80e937b] 1: /usr/bin/X (0x8048000+0x61c7d) [0x80a9c7d] 2: (vdso) (__kernel_rt_sigreturn+0x0) [0x7ad410] Segmentation fault at address 0xc Caught signal 11 (Segmentation fault). Server aborting This is on an NV11 [GeForce2 MX/MX 400] dual display, with an AMD Sempron processor. I've also tried this same card and software on an older Athlon machine, but same results. -- Xorg segmentation fault with Nvidia (ver. 96) driver https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/610446 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
