[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 607551] Re: nvidia drivers not working

2010-08-21 Thread Thomas
For all people affected, please check the latest /var/log/Xorg.0.log for
error output. For the new xserver 1.9 series the nvidia driver is
incompatible at all, see following link for a description and a
workaround: https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/621003

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 585651] Re: [LUCID] Cannot install on eDP laptops such as HP Elitebook 2540p or 8440p

2010-08-21 Thread Cima
I have the same problem on a 8440p. I could install and I am using
ubuntu adding on grub the options 'xforcevesa' and 'i915.modeset=0'
(both). But I can only use the safe graphics mode.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 601441] Re: [i845G] Running Firefox crashes X

2010-08-21 Thread kurt belgrave
Well i guess that is good news, alot of people that are using your chipset are
getting serious problems in lucid.
You can look at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Bugs/Lucidi8xxFreezes.
If you can confirm xubuntu users are not affected by this then , i can suggest
other users to try this.
Cheers

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 601441] Re: [i845G] Running Firefox crashes X

2010-08-21 Thread kurt belgrave
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Please execute the following command, as it will
automatically gather debugging information, in a terminal:

apport-collect 601441

This will help us to find and resolve the problem. Bear in mind that you
may need to install the python-launchpadlib package from the universe
repository. Additionally, when prompted to give apport-collect
permissions for Launchpad you will need to give it at least the ability
to Change Non-Private data as it will be adding information to your
bug report. Thanks in advance!

When reporting bugs in the future please use apport, either via the
appropriate application's Help - Report a Problem menu or using
'ubuntu-bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more
about this functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 380126] Re: [Karmic] Touchpad not recognised correctly, synaptics driver not in use

2010-08-21 Thread Daniel Hollocher
Hey folks,
Based on this question
https://answers.launchpad.net/dell-recovery/+question/121518 I applied a
driver patch to a kernel that I had already been putting together for different
reasons. It might be a bit tricky to figure out how to install it, but it is
in this ppa: https://launchpad.net/~chogydan/+archive/ppa/

You will have to add the maverick version of the ppa, and then add the
linux-ck-image and the linux-ck-headers package of version 2.6.35-17ck

I'm just a volunteer, so I don't plan on maintaining this. The best
thing would be to test it out, and if it works get it incorporated
upstream.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 607490] Re: Xorg fails with NVIDIA(0): Failed to allocate primary buffer: out of memory.

2010-08-21 Thread Krzysztof Matusik
This bug affects me exactly the same way as described by Søren Holm.
The card is geforce 7600GS.
Kernel- 2.6.35-17-generic x86_64
I'm not having this problem when using old kernel from lucid (2.6.32) with new
nvidia driver from maverick.

I'm attaching some logs.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 619453] Re: tv_connector option is ignored

2010-08-21 Thread Aidan Skinner
Annoyingly, this works occasionally with the time honoured Turning It
Off And Turning It On Again technique. I can then reboot as often as I
like and it stays working, but powering off and powering on again will
cause it to fail.

So maybe some sort of state initialisation going wrong?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 620478] Re: xorg crashes randomly with seg fault

2010-08-21 Thread Stephan
As I just had another crash (exact same backtrace), I found that it correlates
also to these entries in syslog:

[ 2610.985055] NVRM: Xid (0007:00): 6, PE0001
...

Interestingly, this problem is logged several times without crashing
(might correlate with those micro-freezes I mentioned?),
but eventually the NVRM: Xid precedes the death of X and kdm
(in this case with a 7 second delay, hm)

That machine worked pretty stable until some days ago, but at this point
it is not usable for work: on one hand crashes happen frequently,
but I cannot see it correlate to any specific action that I could avoid.

All this implies that I'm more than willing to provide additional information
for analysing the problem.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 607490] Re: Xorg fails with NVIDIA(0): Failed to allocate primary buffer: out of memory.

2010-08-21 Thread jolo
@Krzysztof Matusik I just checked this. There is a nvidia kernel loaded

j...@jolo-desktop:~$ lsmod | grep nvidia

nvidia 10195198 0

agpgart32075 2 nvidia,via_agp

j...@jolo-desktop:~$ dmesg | grep nvidia

[ 14.357302] nvidia: module license 'NVIDIA' taints kernel.

[ 17.315761] nvidia :01:00.0: PCI INT A - Link[LNKA] - GSI 11
(level, low) - IRQ 11

[ 18.244266] nvidia :01:00.0: putting AGP V2 device into 4x mode

[ 20.430668] nvidia :01:00.0: putting AGP V2 device into 4x mode

[ 21.652614] nvidia :01:00.0: putting AGP V2 device into 4x mode

[ 22.818040] nvidia :01:00.0: putting AGP V2 device into 4x mode

[ 23.871694] nvidia :01:00.0: putting AGP V2 device into 4x mode

[ 24.922755] nvidia :01:00.0: putting AGP V2 device into 4x mode

In the meanwhile I found another workaround. Instead of adding nopat in
/etc/default/grub and update-grub, I added just one space in /etc/default/grub
between quiet and splash
and I did the ussally update-grub.

# If you change this file, run 'update-grub' afterwards to update

# /boot/grub/grub.cfg.

GRUB_DEFAULT=0

#GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=0

GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT_QUIET=true

GRUB_TIMEOUT=10

GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR=`lsb_release -i -s 2 /dev/null || echo Debian`

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=quiet  splash

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=

Thus with two spaces instead of one space in /etc/default/grub between quiet
and splash the nvidia error seemd to be fixed for me. I also added this file as
an
attachment.

2010-08-21 Thread jolo
@Søren Holm I just tried your suggestion several times. Thus with only
one space between quiet and splash, and editing mode in grub while
booting, change nothing, and press CTRL-x to boot. It does not work for
me every time. It seems the new version 256.44 of the Xorg nvidia driver
sometimes failed to load in Maverick. So I am not sure anymore whether
one of the workarounds actually works or not.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 616023] Re: nVidia card : X won't start since 1.9 update, no screens found

2010-08-21 Thread vanchuck
I was able to work around this issue today by editing the xorg.conf file
to use the 'nv' driver, which at least allowed me to boot regularly.

I then used the Administration Hardware Drivers applet to install the
(latest) nvidia-current drivers, which allowed me to restart fine. I now
have full nvidia drivers, and my xorg.conf is identical to what it was
before the upgrade.

I'm going to assume the Hardware Drivers applet updated one of the
relevant packages or performed some other magic that made it work, but I
have no idea what it was.

apologies for the double-comment, but I just re-opened my xorg.conf to
find that the ignoreABI had been added! Presumably by Hardware Drivers

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 607490] Re: Xorg fails with NVIDIA(0): Failed to allocate primary buffer: out of memory.

2010-08-21 Thread Krzysztof Matusik
Guys,

I've just tried to start system (into X) several times with or without
grub-editing without success (the out of memory error). The computer
was powered off before starting.

Then I've added nopat in grub command line- X system started as it
should.

Then I've rebooted without adding nopat parameter- and system started
correctly again.

No clues what's going on...

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 36812] [NEW] Keyboard layout change on hotkeys press instead of release and do not work well with shortcuts

2010-08-21 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug by Nick Andrik (andrikos):

I have Ctrl+Shift set to layout switch and press ctrl+shift+N (to open
new Terminal or new tab in Opera) -- as a result I have my keyboard
layout switched. This happens because Ubuntu (or XOrg?) change layout on
key press instead of release and do not match layout hotkeys with
application shortcuts. MS Windows do. If layout change hotkeys is
pressed with another key this must be treated as application shortcut
and layout must not be changed. Combined with shortcut bugs in some
Linux applications [Bug 2561] this makes keyboard shortcuts nearly
unusable in default bilingual configuration.

2010-08-21 Thread Nick Andrik
Hello Oded,

I think it is a good idea to subscribe the team in this bug report in order to
have their opinion.
And, btw, we should probably move the bug to the appropriate package (it is not
in the control-center it is in xorg)

This time nothing with NVRM: Xid.
Unsure if this means that these are two different bugs.
At least now we know that the workaround from bug 526857 comment 5
is no solution for this problem.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 607551] Re: nvidia drivers not working

2010-08-21 Thread José Alburquerque
It turns out that I did upgrade the X packages to 1.9 (I was confused by
the 1.8.99... version number). I'm sorry Harry, your first suggestion
was right from the beginning. As far as the workaround, sadly, it
didn't work. I'm attaching the Xorg log in case it provides any useful
information. At least now I know that downgrading the X packages will
probably fix the problem. Thanks.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 36812] Re: Keyboard layout change on hotkeys press instead of release and do not work well with shortcuts

2010-08-21 Thread Alexander Pavlov
Let just me stress the importance of this bug once more, cause English-speaking
users may not readily appreciate it.
A large part of non-English people use at least two keyboard layouts: one for
their native language and one for Latin script: web addresses, programming,
whatever. A common way to switch layouts (wherever it comes from) is pressing
Ctrl+Shift or Alt+Shift. If you use any of these in Ubuntu, you lose it for all
shorcuts. Ctrl-shift arrows don't work, etc etc.
We are talking about huge productivity impairment - the loss of keyboard
shortcuts - in all apps systemwide, for whole countries.

and Shareaza while using Wine looks more intense than they have to be.
I have made a regression test in Wine and found that this commit trigger
the problem:

c29cf0591976f96c3adb30c3c3b6db59f4983251 is the first bad commit
commit c29cf0591976f96c3adb30c3c3b6db59f4983251

winex11: Add support for 32-bit DDBs.

I have reported the bug to Wine (
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=23098 ) but after testing on a
Radeon HD3450 running FGLRX and with a Radeon HD 4670 and the open
source driver (xorg-x11-drv-ati-6.13.0-1.fc13.x86_64 and Mesa 7.8.1)
they were unable to reproduce the problem, when I was using Ubuntu 10.04
I didn't have this issue (Only when I installed the xorg-edgers PPA). So
my conclusion is that this must be an issue in the Intel driver.

There are screenshots in the Wine bug and some more information.
