[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 647270] Re: package fglrx 2:8.723.1-0ubuntu5 failed to install/upgrade: ErrorMessage: subprocess new pre-installation script returned error exit status 1
OK, I'm now on 10.10 and this issue appears to have been resolved ultimately. I believe the issue is that my graphics card probably never should have existed in our plane of reality. Even under Windows driver support for it was nigh nonexistent, so I suppose I should not have been so surprised by its absence in Linux as well. ASUS AH3650 SILENT/HTDI/512M Radeon HD 3650 512MB 128-bit GDDR2 AGP 4X/8X HDCP Ready Video Card When this card came out pretty much everyone in their right mind had switched to motherboards with PCI Express slots. All of ATi/AMDs drivers for this range of chipsets presume a PCI Express installation. But someone at either ASUS or SAPPHIRE, possibly both as they each offer a version of this graphics card, came up with the brilliant idea of offering this as an AGP card for those such as myself who had aging hardware that just needed a good graphical kick in the pants. I was happy to grab it as a replacement for my old AIW Radeon 8500DV. But alas, it was never quite what I expected. So I've ordered new hardware and will be putting together a new system within the next week as my primary Ubuntu workstation. Once that's done this system will be relegated to file serving duty using FreeNAS or something instead. Ultimately fglrx doesn't like this graphics card and neither does anything else. It is truly a forgotten bastard child. -- package fglrx 2:8.723.1-0ubuntu5 failed to install/upgrade: ErrorMessage: subprocess new pre-installation script returned error exit status 1 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/647270 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to fglrx-installer in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 663526] Re: X crashes on VLC open file dialog
Unfortunately, this bug report only shows the VLC output. To further isolate the problem, some more tests can be done, notably: 1/ Try to use VLC with a different video output method, especially the plain X11 output. # vlc -V x11 If that works fine, then it's most certainly a bug in the XVideo driver. 2/ Try to playback without the VLC user interface: # vlc -I dummy MyMovie.mkv If that works fine, then it means the user interface is triggering the crash. This is unlikely to be caused by Xorg itself, but could be a problem with the desktop environment or the window manager. In any case, you should provide the Xsession log. ** Changed in: xorg (Ubuntu) Status: New = Incomplete -- X crashes on VLC open file dialog https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/663526 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 657976] Re: [Intel GMA 945/950] Unity Interface Is Extremely Slow (Ubuntu Netbook 10.10)
Personally, I completely agree with silverstar. The bug is really critical in my eyes and shall be resolved as soon as possible. It's not a good thing promoting a somewhat finished product that doesn't quite work as expected. I guess you'd scare away lots of unexperienced linux newcomers that may try the new final (allegedly stable!) version. Block the bug would basically mean Ubuntu 10.10 is not usable on quite a lot of netbooks for another 6 months (worst case). I wouldn't risk that. Just think bad publicity here. I'd gladly offer my help if I just knew anything about mutter and the intel graphics stack. :-| All the best, folks! -- [Intel GMA 945/950] Unity Interface Is Extremely Slow (Ubuntu Netbook 10.10) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/657976 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is the registrant for xf86-video-intel. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 663469] Re: Strange vertical lines in command line
Very odd. The first 10 or 12 letters on the line seem immune from this behaviour, and moving the cursor backwards over the letter removes the lines, but skipping to the front of the line and moving over the letters again forward doesn't remove them. Both in xterm and emacs. I presume this isn't actually an xterm thing, but something to do with xorg? Same bug applies for me with a new installed Ubuntu 10.10. Nvidia Gtx 460 and core i7. I can reproduce the behaviour mentioned by Reason (killing and restarting gnome-settings-daemon as root). Changing to the the nouveau driver didn't fix the problem for me. Haven't tried the crappy workaround so far. I have reinstalled Ubuntu at least three times with different configurations without success. Also I have a parallel Ubuntu installation upgraded from 10.04 to 10.10 which does not show the bug. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 640214] Re: X failed on Intel B43 machine
debdiff against mesa_7.6.0-1ubuntu4 targetting karmic-proposed containing the required mesa side of this fix for 3D support. It is currently building in this PPA: https://edge.launchpad.net/~sarvatt/+archive/sru2 ** Patch added: mesa_7.6.0-1ubuntu4.1.debdiff https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mesa/+bug/640214/+attachment/1703217/+files/mesa_7.6.0-1ubuntu4.1.debdiff ** Description changed: I have a machine with Intel B43 chipset but can not using X, looks like intel-agp and i915 module is not loaded. --- SRU JUSTIFICATION NOTES --- IMPACT: A new revision of the B43 chipset has been released and the corresponding drivers were not updated to recognize them until recently due to the rarity, but machines are now in the wild that contain them. Without this change the drivers will not recognize these devices at all and fail to load. RESOLUTION: Adding the pci id's to the corresponding drivers, letting them know they are B43 chipset devices that it already knows how to work with. TEST CASE: 1) Boot any ubuntu release on a device containing this chipset, which can be verified with lspci -v and seeing if 8086:2E90 or 8086:2E92 is listed. 2) Verify that i915/intel-agp are not listed in lsmod, and xserver-xorg-video-intel is the driver in use in /var/log/Xorg.0.log 3) Update packages 4) Reboot and verify i915 and intel-agp are listed in lsmod, and intel is the driver in use in /var/log/Xorg.0.log REGRESSION POTENTIAL: Extremely low, no new code paths are added for these specific devices. The changes only add the new device to the corresponding drivers and they are functionally no different than the previous B43 devices supported already. No new code paths are added or changed to make these work. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 657976] Re: [Intel GMA 945/950] Unity Interface Is Extremely Slow (Ubuntu Netbook 10.10)
Just to throw in my 2 cents, this report is the one that is stopping me to update to Maverick my Asus Eee PC 1005PE netbook. UNR in Lucid is pleasant to use. Now, I think that it would be nice if someone of the affected people could try to log in with a normal Gnome session, and tell here if in that case the netbook is snappy. This would restrict the problem, freeing the xorg-intel drivers from suspect (and convince some people to upgrade nevertheless). -- [Intel GMA 945/950] Unity Interface Is Extremely Slow (Ubuntu Netbook 10.10) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/657976 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is the registrant for xf86-video-intel. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 607399] Re: Loading the nvidia driver causes kernel oops in maverick
That’s indeed a kernel oops, though it is a NULL dereference rather than a page fault. Unfortunately your Call Trace got cut off so it’s difficult to say whether it’s related. Did you hard-reboot immediately after the crash? Next time, wait a few seconds and press Alt-SysRq-s to give the kernel a chance to sync its filesystems to disk [1] before rebooting. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 663526] Re: X crashes on VLC open file dialog
Video output works fine with any method. Only crash I noticed is in Advanced open dialog. I enclose Xorg.0.log.old that can help debuging. I have backed up Xorg.0.log, but it starts just after the end of .old log (when new X server is starting), so I'm not enclosing it - you can still request it. After crash, only few lines appeared in dmesg (it was after log close, so it probably didn't cause the crash): [ 223.900154] [fglrx] IRQ 49 Disabled [ 224.339003] fglrx_pci :01:00.0: irq 49 for MSI/MSI-X [ 224.339613] [fglrx] Firegl kernel thread PID: 7815 [ 224.339854] [fglrx] IRQ 49 Enabled [ 224.543218] [fglrx] Gart USWC size:1188 M. I don't know, what caused screen to be black or whether it is tied to VLC, but I know it isn't the proper behauvior. I had some trouble installing this driver on 10.10 and read about problems with it, so I tried to step back a bit to 10.04. First installed it on a 1GB stick without persistence, the driver seemed to install fine though it asked me to reboot which is of course kind of pointless without persistent storage. I put the live image on a 4GB stick with 3.1GB persistent storage. I tried the installation of the driver again, but it failed as you can see here. That's before it got a chance to ask me to reboot. Murz, please file a bug using ubuntu-bug xserver-xorg-video-ati while running the -ati driver. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 657976] Re: [Intel GMA 945/950] Unity Interface Is Extremely Slow (Ubuntu Netbook 10.10)
I confirm that Ubuntu Netbook Edition 10.10 works slow on a Asus EEE PC 1201N (nVidia ION with fast graphics hardware) with 2 GB ram. This is what I saw: - Icons from the left toolbar (applications) loose the pictures when computer go sleep, suspend mode or when user session is switched to another session, and appear all like a TV when all programation ends (just a bunch of non-sense different color pixels mixed) - When selecting the file explorer, first is shown the icon labels for files and folders, but for the pictures I must wait even minutes (only 1st.time, the second time and so are faster, like if where cached in memory) - Performance (FPS) is worse than normal Ubuntu edition - Because all of this, UNE consumes the battery more quickly that normal Ubuntu MY SOLUTION: I switched to the normal Ubuntu Edition 10.10, and now everything is much better. Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. While we appreciate the difficulties you are facing, it would appear that the CD image (ISO file) you downloaded could be corrupt. There is an easy way to verify the integrity of the Ubuntu ISO files you download. Could you please visit https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM follow the instructions and report back as to whether or not the MD5SUM verified?
