Jenny,
Where exactly did you select Make Default and Apply? Does this generate a

Actually, Geode support is somewhat messy on 10.10 Maverick. However,
Lucid and the upcoming Natty should be OK.

You have been subscribed to a public bug:

After a while (randomly), KDE stops reponding. The mouse still moves, but
clicking on a widget doesn't work. The only thing I could do, is pressing

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 663203] Re: KDE stops responding

I attached a mouse with different branding, a Microsoft mouse.
Previously, I had attached a logitech mouse.

Since then, the problem doesn't occour at all.
But what's the difference between a microsoft mouse and a logitech mouse? Is it
due to the driver?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 667280] [NEW] Changing workspaces crashes video driver

2010-10-27 Thread Marius Vasilescu
Public bug reported:

Changing to another workspace causes the visual effects to crash,
probably it crashes the 2D accel. In Appearance the effects are
automatically changed from normal/extra to none. This didn't
happen in the maverick RC, the issue was introduced by an update.

package: 260.19.06-0ubuntu1 or 260.19.12-0ubuntu1~xup2 (ubuntu-x-swat)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 632594] Re: xvfb 1.9 and/or metacity not working on the buildds

2010-10-27 Thread Bryce Harrington
The build log in comment #6 doesn't really give enough detail to be sure
what the error is, other than just that metacity couldn't be started up:

JAVAHarness

EXECmetacity
KILLXvfb
KILLmetacity
Exception in thread main java.lang.RuntimeException:

So, would be interesting to see a more detailed log, but seems quite
possible it could be the same bug.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 632594] Re: xvfb 1.9 and/or metacity not working on the buildds

2010-10-27 Thread Bryce Harrington
As to the question of how it entered the error path, I can't reproduce
the issue on maverick (pasting in the code and running it on a laptop
seems to work fine for me). However, from the error messages in the
description:

Window manager warning: Failed to contact configuration server; the most
common cause is a missing or misconfigured D-Bus session bus daemon. See
http://projects.gnome.org/gconf/ for information. (Details - 1: Failed
to get connection to session: Cannot spawn a message bus without a
machine-id: Unable to load /var/lib/dbus/machine-id: Failed to open file

...this seems to be suggesting your dbus service is missing. Is that a
possibility?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 661327] Re: User interface stutters / laggy when mouse NOT moving

2010-10-27 Thread Thomas Gebhardt
Obviously we are dealing with (at least two) different bugs here that
cause similiar effects.

The bug that can be expelled with module-udev-detect tsched=0 probably
belongs to pulseaudio rather than to xorg
(BTW: Any hints what's going on here, why does that workaround fix the problem?)

While this was the most annoying bug for me, I sometimes still notice
that the display freezes for some seconds when I try to move the
pointer.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 626974] Re: ABI change in xorg 1.9 breaks legacy nvidia-96 drivers in Maverick

2010-10-27 Thread ludwigmace
Seems that the 96 drivers have been updated every few months, with the
longest delays being 5 and 8 months. This is an older legacy chipset so
I'm OK with the fact that they don't update their drivers immediately
whenever a Linux distribution updates its graphics packages. Last
update was 7/15 to hopefully we'll see something fairly soon.

You can keep an eye on the drivers here:
ftp://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 667383] [NEW] NVIDIA Card Errors on Visual Effects in Maverick 10.10

2010-10-27 Thread Bryan Melissa Festa
Public bug reported:

I am running Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick
Video Card Hardware: NVidia GTX295
Output: Dual Monitor

When Xinerama is configured and attempting to set visual effects to
anything other than None the error: The Composite extension is not
available is thrown.

This is also causing issues running Virtual Box preventing me from doing
work for the school or my office which require a Windows OS. Other
issues are display problems where white boxes are appearing all over the
place. And if attempting to use Avant Window Navigator the GUI goes
into an infinite loop of crashes.

Ubuntu 10.04 worked with no problems. I attempted to use the NVIDIA
supplied driver as well and this has also caused the same results. I
have already reformatted about a dozen times trying to find clean
solutions.

2010-10-27 Thread Michael Walton
Upon making sure everything in what I said was accurate I tried
disabling and reenabling the touch pad again, and it seems to affect my
ability to use anything on the gnome desktop, but if i have an internet
browser window open I can still affect it with my actions. The keyboard
will not even work on anything on the Gnome desktop as well as the
touchpad *or* the wacom touch screen. I just wanted to make sure that
was clear. Restarting X fixes everything though via the
ctrl+alt+backspace.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 296122] Re: XNEST crashes in X_PolyFillRectangle with error config/hal: NewInputDeviceRequest failed

2010-10-27 Thread Graham
Me getting this too on makerick.

Pretty much identical.

I think this has always been a problem as I have used many distros for
many years and Xnest has always been buggy

Using XLIB_SKIP_ARGB_VISUALS=1 (which stops a similar bug in nedit) helps
sometimes
http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-202772.html

Also using smaller window geometry which makes me think is may be linked
to resource allocation (e.g. memory).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 660596] Re: Black screen after installing Nvidia drivers on 10.10

2010-10-27 Thread Rho_T
I have Ubuntu 10.10 a new'ish Vaio laptop with an NVIDIA 310m and have
had all the same problems - it worked in 10.04 and then didn't when I
upgraded to 10.10 - Blank screen and then 'no screens available', etc.
I've just fixed it with the following...I've tried to detail things as
much as possible. But please bare in mind you will need your laptops
custom EDID before starting.

Here we go:

A) Go to the Synaptics Package Manager, do a search for NVIDIA and
remove everything.

B) Download NVIDIA-Linux-x86-256.53.run from the NVIDIA Linux website
and save it somewhere

C) Open up a terminal and type
Code:

/etc/init.d/gdm stop

D) now type
Code:

sudo bash

E) then navigate to the folder where you saved your NVIDIA driver

F) Type
Code:

 ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86-256.53.run

G) Click yes to everything

H) restart and boot up in safe mode (hit shift after bios)

I)edit your Xorg .conf file by opening up a terminal and typing
Code:

sudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf

J) If you like remove everything in it and paste in the following (you may have
to change the customedid path and also your busID) and save:
Code:

Section Device
Identifier Device0
Driver nvidia
VendorName NVIDIA Corporation
Option ConnectedMonitor DFP-0
Option CustomEDID DFP-0:/etc/X11/nvidiaedid.bin
BusID PCI:1:0:0
EndSection

K) open the terminal again and type:
Code:

sudo gedit /etc/default/grub/

and change the line to the following: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=quiet
splash nomodeset

L) Now often when restarting every is faced with the no screens problem, I
think this is due to nouveau being a pain, so open up your terminal again and
type
Code:

sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

and in this file at the bottom add the following
Code:

blacklist nouveau

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 584674] Re: Lucid fresh install doesn't go beyond login. Possible Savage driver problem.

2010-10-27 Thread Norbert Bollow
I've just upgraded from 10.04 to 10.10; now I'm experiencing a problem
which is, superficially at least, very similar. I'm using gdm however.
Upon entering the correct password at gdm, the screen blinks and the gdm
login screen is built up again. Another similarity is that this is also
with the SAVAGE driver (I haven't yet tried using another driver
package, I'll do that as soon as I can. I need to go and catch some
sleep now, and will be traveling all day tomorrow.)

In order to start investigating the problem, I have booted into
recovery mode from the grib menu, then chosen netroot in the
Reciovery menu.

If I type 'startx' as root, it works.

If I 'su - nb' first, the type 'startx', the screen goes dark with an
Input Not Supported box from the monitor.

The Xorg log file from the case that doesn't work (attached) is very
similar to the case that does work.

The only possibly-significant difference is the final line

[ 2295.773] (--) SAVAGE(0): Chose mode 14f at 85Hz.

which doesn't have an equivalent in the Xorg log file for the case that
works.

** Attachment added: Xorg.0.log file from failed 'startx' attempt

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 660596] Re: Black screen after installing Nvidia drivers on 10.10

2010-10-27 Thread Stefan Hattrell
Hi all,

I am having this very issue too with a Geforce 8400GS on Ubuntu 10.10.
Very frustrating and unsure about what is causing it. I've tried the
latest Nvidia drivers from the official website and the ubuntu package
(nvidia-current). Boots up and logs in (can hear the login sound) but no
display. Only fix is to login to the console and remove the drivers and
enable nouveau again.

BTW I've tried all sorts of other fixes to no avail...

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 614993] Re: 10.04 - 10.10 upgrade fails: pkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breaks: xserver-xorg-video-v4l demoted to universe

2010-10-27 Thread hackel
Why is this bug marked as fixed? It still exists when upgrading from
Lucid-Maverick, the upgrade cannot be calculated unless xserver-xorg-
video-nouveau is first removed. This is a BUG. I should not have to
look up this bug report and search through all the comments just to
figure out how to complete an upgrade... At the *very* least this issue
needs to be mentioned in the release notes if no automated fix is
possible.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 667546] [NEW] xrandr fails to find (any) output on r800

2010-10-27 Thread cmetz
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: x11-xserver-utils

I reinstalled a system previously running 10.04 with 10.10, and went
about configuring for panning in the usual way as of xrandr:

/etc/X11/xorg.conf added:

Section Screen
Identifier Screen0
Device Card0
MonitorMonitor0
SubSection Display
Viewport 0 0
Virtual 3200 2400
Depth 24
EndSubSection
EndSection

Then, I run:

# xrandr --output DVI-0 --panning 3200x2400

and I get:

xrandr: cannot find output 0x47

Forgetting about panning for a moment:

# xrandr --output DVI-0
xrandr: cannot find output 0x47

I've enclosed the output of xrandr --verbose, but what I think is the
relevant line is:

DVI-0 connected 1600x1200+0+0 (0x49) normal (normal left inverted right x axis
y axis) 367mm x 275mm
Identifier: 0x46

So basically, for some reason, the DVI-0 connection's identifier is
0x46, but xrandr wants to use 0x47.

For everything, it appears:

# xrandr --output VGA-0
xrandr: cannot find output 0x47

My video card is a Radeon 5750, so it's a R800.

apt-cache policy as requested in the bug reporting guidelines didn't
seem to work. I'm up-to-date as of today (10/27/10).

This worked fine with exactly these configuration steps in 10.04, and if
memory serves in 9.10.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 647461] Re: Xorg freeze with fglrx driver update

2010-10-27 Thread Phenix
I had recently dist-upgrade from lucid to maverick and I had same error in my
/var/log/Xorg.0.log (dlopen: /usr/lib/xorg/extra-modules/modules/glesx.so:
undefined symbol: PictureScreenPrivateKeyRec) - Empty black screen after the
splash screen at normal startup. Before dist-upgrade, i used fglrx (catalyst
10.9) without problem.
After researchs, I discover some dependancy errors with packages like
xserver-xorg or xserver-xorg-core. Versions was build for lucid (why? I don't
know).

So I tried :
sudo dselect dist-upgrade -- propose to remove my old lucid package (lucky me)
sudo aptitude install fglrx -- install fglrx and (a lot of) dependancy. Maybe
sudo apt-get install fglrx is enough, I don't know, I don't try this first.

At this point, I could boot in recovery mode, lauch failsafeX, use an
empty xorg.conf, restart X, log in, and hug my so missed desktop. I
already knew this situation after upgrading fglrx with packages from
amd/ati. The undefined symbol problem was solved.

Finally, I followed instructions to remove fglrx (ubuntu restricted) :
http://wiki.cchtml.comindex.phpUbuntu_Lucid_Installation_Guide#Removing_the_Driver
and followed instructions to build and install fglrx (amd/ati) :
http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu_Lucid_Installation_Guide#Download_the_latest_Catalyst_package.
3D acceleration back. Smiles on my face too.

Thx for reading.

Solution.

Add the following to your command line in the boot up script:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=quiet splash nohz=off

Will turn off the CPU Effects. Not the prettiest solution, your laptop
will get hotter, the battery life will b shorter ... but at least, the
system runs without interruption.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 379313] Re: Handling NextWindow Touchscreen (multitouch)

2010-10-27 Thread WebNuLL
Im waiting for multi-touch too. But i think its difficult to implement.
It can take a long time to bring multi-pointer support to this driver.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 658649] Re: Xorg freeze without reason in Ubuntu 10.10

2010-10-27 Thread Chauncellor
Have been using the crack-pushers xorg ppa and have not had a problem
since.

There must have been a regression that was since fixed.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 575055] Re: Xserver crash when hitting certain keys while scroll lock is activated

2010-10-27 Thread reini
Spoke too soon - the crash is still here in maverick. The workaround
using startx instead of KDM still works, even though that means no
standby, suspend to disk or power management functionality from within
KDE.
