I have Ubuntu 10.10 a new'ish Vaio laptop with an NVIDIA 310m and have had all the same problems - it worked in 10.04 and then didn't when I upgraded to 10.10 - Blank screen and then 'no screens available', etc. I've just fixed it with the following...I've tried to detail things as much as possible. But please bare in mind you will need your laptops custom EDID before starting. Here we go: A) Go to the Synaptics Package Manager, do a search for NVIDIA and remove everything. B) Download NVIDIA-Linux-x86-256.53.run from the NVIDIA Linux website and save it somewhere C) Open up a terminal and type Code: /etc/init.d/gdm stop D) now type Code: sudo bash E) then navigate to the folder where you saved your NVIDIA driver F) Type Code: ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86-256.53.run G) Click yes to everything H) restart and boot up in safe mode (hit shift after bios) I)edit your Xorg .conf file by opening up a terminal and typing Code: sudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf J) If you like remove everything in it and paste in the following (you may have to change the customedid path and also your busID) and save: Code: Section Device Identifier Device0 Driver nvidia VendorName NVIDIA Corporation Option ConnectedMonitor DFP-0 Option CustomEDID DFP-0:/etc/X11/nvidiaedid.bin BusID PCI:1:0:0 EndSection K) open the terminal again and type: Code: sudo gedit /etc/default/grub/ and change the line to the following: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=quiet splash nomodeset L) Now often when restarting every is faced with the no screens problem, I think this is due to nouveau being a pain, so open up your terminal again and type Code: sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf and in this file at the bottom add the following Code: blacklist nouveau ---works for me -- Black screen after installing Nvidia drivers on 10.10 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/660596 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg-server in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 584674] Re: Lucid fresh install doesn't go beyond login. Possible Savage driver problem.
I've just upgraded from 10.04 to 10.10; now I'm experiencing a problem which is, superficially at least, very similar. I'm using gdm however. Upon entering the correct password at gdm, the screen blinks and the gdm login screen is built up again. Another similarity is that this is also with the SAVAGE driver (I haven't yet tried using another driver package, I'll do that as soon as I can. I need to go and catch some sleep now, and will be traveling all day tomorrow.) In order to start investigating the problem, I have booted into recovery mode from the grib menu, then chosen netroot in the Reciovery menu. If I type 'startx' as root, it works. If I 'su - nb' first, the type 'startx', the screen goes dark with an Input Not Supported box from the monitor. The Xorg log file from the case that doesn't work (attached) is very similar to the case that does work. The only possibly-significant difference is the final line [ 2295.773] (--) SAVAGE(0): Chose mode 14f at 85Hz. which doesn't have an equivalent in the Xorg log file for the case that works. ** Attachment added: Xorg.0.log file from failed 'startx' attempt https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-savage/+bug/584674/+attachment/1713540/+files/Xorg.0.log_nb_doesntwork -- Lucid fresh install doesn't go beyond login. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 614993] Re: 10.04 - 10.10 upgrade fails: pkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breaks: xserver-xorg-video-v4l demoted to universe
Why is this bug marked as fixed? It still exists when upgrading from Lucid-Maverick, the upgrade cannot be calculated unless xserver-xorg- video-nouveau is first removed. This is a BUG. I should not have to look up this bug report and search through all the comments just to figure out how to complete an upgrade... At the *very* least this issue needs to be mentioned in the release notes if no automated fix is possible. -- 10.04 - 10.10 upgrade fails: pkgProblemResolver::Resolve generated breaks: xserver-xorg-video-v4l demoted to universe https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/614993 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg-server in ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 667546] [NEW] xrandr fails to find (any) output on r800
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: x11-xserver-utils I reinstalled a system previously running 10.04 with 10.10, and went about configuring for panning in the usual way as of xrandr: /etc/X11/xorg.conf added: Section Screen Identifier Screen0 Device Card0 MonitorMonitor0 SubSection Display Viewport 0 0 Virtual 3200 2400 Depth 24 EndSubSection EndSection Then, I run: # xrandr --output DVI-0 --panning 3200x2400 and I get: xrandr: cannot find output 0x47 Forgetting about panning for a moment: # xrandr --output DVI-0 xrandr: cannot find output 0x47 I've enclosed the output of xrandr --verbose, but what I think is the relevant line is: DVI-0 connected 1600x1200+0+0 (0x49) normal (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 367mm x 275mm Identifier: 0x46 So basically, for some reason, the DVI-0 connection's identifier is 0x46, but xrandr wants to use 0x47. For everything, it appears: # xrandr --output VGA-0 xrandr: cannot find output 0x47 My video card is a Radeon 5750, so it's a R800. apt-cache policy as requested in the bug reporting guidelines didn't seem to work. I'm up-to-date as of today (10/27/10). [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 647461] Re: Xorg freeze with fglrx driver update
I had recently dist-upgrade from lucid to maverick and I had same error in my /var/log/Xorg.0.log (dlopen: /usr/lib/xorg/extra-modules/modules/glesx.so: undefined symbol: PictureScreenPrivateKeyRec) - Empty black screen after the splash screen at normal startup. Before dist-upgrade, i used fglrx (catalyst 10.9) without problem. After researchs, I discover some dependancy errors with packages like xserver-xorg or xserver-xorg-core. Versions was build for lucid (why? I don't know). So I tried : sudo dselect dist-upgrade -- propose to remove my old lucid package (lucky me) sudo aptitude install fglrx -- install fglrx and (a lot of) dependancy. Maybe sudo apt-get install fglrx is enough, I don't know, I don't try this first. At this point, I could boot in recovery mode, lauch failsafeX, use an empty xorg.conf, restart X, log in, and hug my so missed desktop. I already knew this situation after upgrading fglrx with packages from amd/ati. The undefined symbol problem was solved. Finally, I followed instructions to remove fglrx (ubuntu restricted) : http://wiki.cchtml.comindex.phpUbuntu_Lucid_Installation_Guide#Removing_the_Driver and followed instructions to build and install fglrx (amd/ati) : http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubuntu_Lucid_Installation_Guide#Download_the_latest_Catalyst_package. 3D acceleration back. Solution. Add the following to your command line in the boot up script: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=quiet splash nohz=off Will turn off the CPU Effects.
