What is CPU usage, when you remove options from xorg.conf file?

Attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log file.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 607490] Re: Xorg fails with NVIDIA(0): Failed to allocate primary buffer: out of memory.

2010-12-14 Thread Daniel Hahler
It was still happening for me, and I investigated into a kernel patch (landed
in 2.6.36.2) yesterday.
This did not help on it's own, but I had to change GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=keep

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 312756] Re: MASTER: support graphics card hot switch

2010-12-14 Thread Martin Gasparek
Hi, I have also tested ./test_off.sh script.
...
Trying \_SB.PCI0.PEGR.GFX0._OFF: works!

But after a while my laptop gets totaly frozen. Only thing that helps is
holding power button 5secs to turn it off.
The problem is I have tried a lot of things to enable/disable/switch VGA. So I
dont know if this will happen on clear install. I will let you know when I find
out.

Good work so far. Thank you

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears
to be a regular (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security
issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to
cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy.
Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 690201] [NEW] Hang check timer elapsed ... GPU hung

2010-12-14 Thread Glen Ditchfield
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel

I've had a few OpenGL programs suffer from frozen screens when they use
a full-screen mode on my EliteBook 8440p laptop. So far I have only
found one way to reproduce the problem.

* Launch Kubuntu's system settings app.
* In the Display and Monitor control panel, select Screen Saver, and choose
an OpenGL Screen Saver. I tried Euphoria and Particle Fountain. Set the
screen saver to start after 1 minute.
* In the Power Management control panel, find a profile assigned to the
Performance profile. Edit the Performance profile to enable display power
management, standby after 2 minutes, suspend after 3 minutes.
* Do nothing for 4 minutes, then touch a key.

For me, the screen lights up showing the last frame of the screen saver
. The cursor is active and changes shape as I move it, as if it were
reacting to the unseen windows on the screen.

Switching to console 1, I see an irregular stream of messages
[drm:i915_hangcheck_elapsed] *ERROR* Hangcheck timer elapsed ... GPU hung
  [drm:i915_do_wait_request] *ERROR* i915_do_wait_request returns -5

Xorg.log ends with
  [ 4163.368] (WW) intel(0): i830_uxa_prepare_access: gtt bo map failed:
Input/output error
[ 4163.371] (EE) intel(0): Failed to submit batch buffer, expect rendering
corruption or even a frozen display: Input/output error.

The Asciiquarium and Blank Screen screen savers don't cause this
problem.

This may be upstream bug

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 308191] Re: Multitouch support not available for Synaptics touchpads v7.2

2010-12-14 Thread pablomme
@Nathan: you can do
 xinput set-int-prop Synaptics Tap Action 8 0 0 0 0 1 2 3
See 'man synaptics' for more info. If you run this from Startup Applications
the settings will get overridden by Gnome's (which doesn't appear to have a way
to configure this) as it sets itself up. What I have is a script to keep
re-applying the settings for 2 minutes:

 #!/bin/bash
 itry=0 ; while ((itry24)) ; do itry=$((itry+1))
  xinput set-int-prop Synaptics Tap Action 8 0 0 0 0 1 2 3
  sleep 5
 done

Still I get some config resets at seemingly random times, so I have the
xinput command at hand to re-apply them when needed..

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 559883] Re: lucid X crashes with dual head configuration when opengl is enabled with intel GM945

2010-12-14 Thread ockels
Same here on Intel 82G33/G31 on a dual screen setup (2 x 1440x900). Both
compiz and kwin are likely not able to display larger resolutions than
2048x2048 with OpenGL. - Crash - Really annoying. A workaround to have
some form of compositing enabled (transparency in widgets etc) is to use
metacity as default window-manager and enable compositing (default is
disabled) by executing :

gconftool-2 -s '/apps/metacity/general/compositing_manager' --type bool
true

A dual screen / large resolution screen setup will then work and you
have nice transparent widgets. Not perfect, but workable for now...

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 687738] Re: nvidia driver seems to have sync to vblank issue

2010-12-14 Thread Bryce Harrington
** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: compiz

This bug is hard to describe and to record in gtk-recordmydesktop.

The issue seems to be a vsync one, as sometimes, when switching
workspace, you get some kind of magnet effect, with distortion for
less than half a second. We can notice as well some X damage issue not
repainted when scrolling fast on a webpage (so part of the page is
  repeated).

- Seems that enabling the force X to sync in the workaround and setting the
sync to vblank in nvidia-settings reduces the issue (not completely fixing it
so).
+ Seems that enabling the force X to sync is the workaround and setting the
sync to vblank in nvidia-settings reduces the issue (not completely fixing it
so).
With unity using that by default, we should take that into account.

  Plan of action:
  - see if we can enable sync to vblank by default on nvidia-settings
  - in the detection plugin, enable the compiz workaround if the driver is the
proprieraty nvidia driver.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 186103] Re: [K8M800] Panel on K8M800 is not supported (Averatec 3280)

2010-12-14 Thread Peter Belew
I built and installed the driver, and rebooted a couple of times. I've
added an archive containing Xorg.0.log and Xorg.0.log.old. There was no
xorg.conf file in /etc/X11.

The main change was that the login screen was no longer at 1600x1200.
The grub2 screen and the final Gnome screen appeared to be at 1024x768.

However, note that the Gnome screen res was previously set with the
SystemPreferencesMonitors dialog to 1024x768 - how do I undo the
setting from that dialog, so that the resolution is determined entirely
by the driver?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 643118] Re: [RV350] xrandr exposes invalid 1360x768 mode

2010-12-14 Thread crjackson
Tom, I know it's been a long time but I've had some serious health
issues. Please tell me what I need to do if more information is needed
at this point. The release shipped with some changes as a result (I
think) of this bug post and others and it seemed to cure my particular
issue.

Is more information required or is the bug considered obsolete now?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 690345] [NEW] Xorg crash when starting any screensaver or putting screen to blank

2010-12-14 Thread Dariusz Panasiuk
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

This HP Omnibook Xe3l is quite old laptop but with 512MB of maximum RAM it is
still fine for basic stuff with Ubuntu.
I wanted to report few things that don't work in hope it will sort also others
problems.
1) Screensaver of any type (even simplest) crashes xorg. It happens also when I
select blank screen as screensaver
2) suspend or hibernation doesn't work at all
3) none of hardware buttons aren't working (www, email, help, suspend)
4) power meter doesn't display battery status

Shell I raise new bug report for each of this things, and if so how do I
run ubuntu-bug against each of those?

Please let me know if you need me to run any commands

many thanks

Dariusz

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 615892] Re: Madcatz Cyborg R.A.T. 7 focus issues

2010-12-14 Thread David Collins
Yarro:

Steps to get RAT 7 working:

1) Open terminal

2) Type (without quotes) sudo gedit /etc/X11/xorg.conf (Enter password
if needed)

3) In the text file that opens up, add this to the bottom:

Section InputClass
Identifier Mouse Remap
MatchProduct Saitek Cyborg R.A.T.7 Mouse
MatchDevicePath /dev/input/event*
Option ButtonMapping 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 2 9 10 11 12 0 0 0
EndSection

4) Save file

5) Restart computer (or just restart the X server if you know how)

6) Use mouse!

Above solution is based on Mitch Walker's comment #17.

You should be able to stop Gnome overwriting your settings if you
disable its mouse plugin by navigating to
apps/gnome_settings_daemon/plugins/mouse/ in gconf-editor and un-
ticking active, then configure manually with a file in xorg.conf.d
(see man sysnaptics for syntax).

Could you point me to the patches/source combo to compile this on other

I'd be okay with us shipping 6.13.99 even if the release doesn't make it

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 685017] Re: Jockey should warn on insufficient disk space in LiveCD environment, else get error package nvidia-current 260.19.21-0ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess in

2010-12-14 Thread Bryce Harrington
Alright, I've sufficiently reproduced the issue and its workarounds now
that I'm comfortable closing the -nvidia part of this bug. I'll update
the description with steps I used to work around it.

I reckon there's 3 separate bugs at play here:

1. usb-creator allows people to specify too large a proportion of usb
drive space to the persistent file, leaving an insufficient amount to do
initrd updates (bug #562312).

2. jockey does not detect the limited system space issue (this bug)

3. casper is not creating the /vmlinuz symlink correctly, which leads
to kernel updates failing (bug #557023)

These all need fixed, but none are -nvidia or -fglrx issues
specifically, so I'm closing out the -nvidia task for this bug.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 685017] Re: Jockey should warn on insufficient disk space in LiveCD environment, else get error package nvidia-current 260.19.21-0ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess in

2010-12-14 Thread Bryce Harrington
** Description changed:

  [Problem]
This is a common issue encountered by users trying to install -nvidia on
systems with insufficient space to install the driver. This can happen for
instance if the user is booting from a usb disk.

It is further noticed that in many cases the system may appear to have
enough space, but it still fails on an out of space issue. It is
suspected that either more space is used than expected, or the amount of
  available space is overreported.

Jockey should check for available space on installation, and should
include a sizable margin (like 2.5x space asked). If the user has less
than that amount of space, it should give a dialog warning them that
  they won't have enough space.

Jockey also needs to be aware that in a LiveCD environment, there may be
ample space available in the reserved persistent space (the casper-rw
file on the usb key), but it needs to have space on the underlying
filesystem too, for creating initrd and storing the kernel image and so
  on.

  [Steps to Reproduce]
  1. Download an ISO
  2. Generate a USB install key using usb-creator. Select the 'Stored in
reserved extra space' option and set it to the maximum available space.
  3. Using df note the remaining free space (496k in my case)
  4. Boot the usb device on a system with NVIDIA or AMD graphics
  5. Go to the applications menu. Select 'Additional Drivers'. Install fglrx
or nvidia (or any other proprietary driver).
  6. Installation of the driver fails. (I see SystemError: installArchives()
failed but might error differently depending on how much space was available).
  7. Shut down system and re-examine usb drive. The persistence file has not
changed size, but other things on the USB drive have increased and used up the
remaining space. (I see initrd.lz.new of size 496k)
+
+ [Workaround]
+ 1. Download an ISO (I tested against the alpha-1 iso image)
+ 2. Generate a USB drive using usb-creator. Do not reserve all the remaining
space. Leave some amount for system updates (I tested on a 4G drive, reserving
1G to persistent storage and the remaining ~2G for system updates, but other
quantities may work as well). This works around bug #562312.
+ 3. Boot the USB drive, select Try Ubuntu (the Live CD environment)
+ 4. Delete the broken /vmlinuz symlink and create /vmlinuz as a new symlink
to /cdrom/casper/vmlinuz /vmlinuz. This works around bug #557023.
+ 5. Do an update (via running 'Check' in Update Manager, or just 'sudo
apt-get update' on the command line). Otherwise jockey will fail with error
about not finding expected versions of Qt or other packages.
+ 6. Now run 'Additional Hardware' (aka jockey), and click 'Activate'. Some
stuff is downloaded and installed... time passes... then it says it is
successfully installed.
+ 7. Reboot. (For some reason I had to specifically select USB in BIOS for
booting, even that was already listed as first thing to try.)
+ 8. Select 'Try Ubuntu' again; it should load up fine now, with fglrx in the
live cd environment, with compiz and unity enabled.

2010-12-14 Thread Bryce Harrington
Hrm, unfortunately even using all the workarounds I still couldn't get
fglrx up. Here's what I tried:

[Workaround]
1. Download an ISO (I tested against the alpha-1 iso image)
2. Generate a USB drive using usb-creator. Do not reserve all the remaining
space. Leave some amount for system updates (I tested on a 4G drive, reserving
1G to persistent storage and the remaining ~2G for system updates, but other
quantities may work as well). This works around bug #562312.

4. Delete the broken /vmlinuz symlink and create /vmlinuz as a new symlink to
/cdrom/casper/vmlinuz /vmlinuz. This works around bug #557023.
5. Do an update (via running 'Check' in Update Manager, or just 'sudo apt-get
update' on the command line). Otherwise jockey will fail with error about not
finding expected versions of Qt or other packages.
6. Now run 'Additional Hardware' (aka jockey), and click 'Activate'. Some
stuff is downloaded and installed... time passes... then it says it is
successfully installed.
7.  Reboot (I had to manually select boot from USB in BIOS for some reason;
didn't have to do that before.)

Everything seemed fine up through this point. The boot graphics were
different than previously, making me think that fglrx had loaded.
However no good... checking dmesg shows that radeon was selected, no
fglrx at all. So I think there's more at play here, but my guess is
that it has to do with the way the filesystems are set up more than it
being an issue with -nvidia or -fglrx particularly. So I'll leave the
-nvidia task closed, but if anyone identifies something that definitely
needs done on either driver, please feel free to reopen.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 164589] Re: Occasional screen-wide blink when using opengl apps (compiz also) and Nvidia cards

2010-12-14 Thread Christopher OBrien
Hi everyone. I'm new to ubuntu perhaps this is common sense and should
be overlooked, but it worked for me. The blinking on my laptop (Asus
G73W, nVidia 460GM -1.5gm) was driving me crazy.

With the nVidia drivers up to date, click

System - Administration - NVIDIA X Server Settings

On the left hand menu, click

nvidia-settings Configuration

Uncheck PowerMizer Monitor, save configurations and quit. This has
completely eliminated the blinking for me.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 686070] Re: black screen (no more gdm/X server) with nvidia propriatery after gfxpayload=keep activation

2010-12-14 Thread Colin Watson
If this can't be fixed, please start assembling a list of affected PCI
IDs and send them to me. Evan's already written code to allow cards to
be blacklisted; I just need to create a home for the blacklist file.

Bryce, please note that gfxpayload=keep is a GRUB setting, not a Linux
kernel setting; although for free drivers the bugs generally do belong
on the kernel.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 585765] Re: Ubuntu 10.04 random freezes

2010-12-14 Thread John Bruno
I found this similar bug report here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/627862 that
exactly describes my version of this bug, I urge people to read the
symptoms of that bug report and subscribe to it only if it exactly fits
your version of the mouse pointer freeze problem.
