For the most part all the error messages in dmesg are generic "the gpu locked up" type stuff; the one bit that stands out as unusual is: [ 5486.401830] [drm:init_ring_common] *ERROR* render ring initialization failed ctl head tail start however even that looks a bit generic. You said you recently upgraded to natty, was that the same day you experienced this error? Was there any chance you had upgraded but not yet rebooted? [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 719831] [NEW] Strange artifacts related to the xorg's intel driver
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel Here the details: 1.) Some areas in the GUIs of my wine applications appear as black areas. This bug has been reported here (https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=30157) and here (http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=24430) and appear to be related to Xorg's Intel driver (2.12). 2.) The pull-down menus of the main panel or any window's menu fail to appear after a first click. It usually needs a second click to show up. I have a notebook with integrated Intel core GPU and a discrete ATI Radeon GPU (HD 5600 series). The two issues mentioned above only occurred while using the integrated Intel core GPU. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 719826] [NEW] pc will not boot after update to linux 2.6.38
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg I am running Ubuntu 10.10, linux 2.6.37-12 and tonight(2/15/2011) I updated via Update Manager. This update contained the packages to introduce a new linux image 2.6.38. Upon completing the update, I was asked to restart to complete the installation. I restarted. I received a message "mountall: disconnected from Plymouth" and was presented a login prompt. I rebooted, and the same problem occurred. I went to a backup of my syste, from 2/4/2011, restored my system, and then redi all the updates. When I rebooted, the same problem occurred. I restored from backup again, but did not include the seven software packages related to the new kernel. The update was successful. I was able to boot since I was still on 2.6.37-12. When I had the trouble booting into 2.6.38, I tried re-installing all the plymouth packages to no avail. It would seem that I am missing a package in this update. While the error message differs, this might be a dupe of or related to bug #711422 If you are able to reliably reproduce this crash, please install the following PPA and run it for a day or so: https://edge.launchpad.net/~raof/+archive/aubergine This PPA adds a reference check to avoid a similar invalid memory situation, and so might solve this bug as well. Please report back whether it fixes your issue or not. If you have NOT been able to reliably reproduce the crash recently (within the last day or so), you don't need to install the PPA, and don't need to comment here. ** Changed in: xorg-server (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete => New ** Changed in: xorg-server (Ubuntu) Status: New => Incomplete -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg-server in ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/716251 Title: Xorg assert failure: *** glibc detected *** /usr/bin/X: corrupted double-linked list: 0x08da5930 *** ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 705464] Re: Ubuntu 10.04 doesn't set hardware acceleration on ProSavageDDR video card
apport information ** Tags added: apport-collected ** Description changed: I have a PC with Ubuntu10.04 and video card S3 VT8375 [ProSavage8 KM266/KL266] and I'm trying to run some 3D games with at least a satisfactory performance, but I can not. I know that this chipset hasn't a good 3D support in Linux, but I did a test with Linux Mint Debian (LMDE) and the video came with a very acceptable performance, as this comparison: $ glxgears (On Ubuntu 10.04) 299 frames in 5.0 seconds 347 frames in 5.0 seconds 373 frames in 5.0 seconds 378 frames in 5.0 seconds $ glxgears (On LMDE) 1249 frames in 5.0 seconds 1147 frames in 5.0 seconds 1107 frames in 5.0 seconds 1278 frames in 5.0 seconds Furthermore, I discovered that Ubuntu doesn't use the correct driver for the card for 3D acceleration and do insist on doing software acceleration, which is slower than hardware acceleration: $ glxinfo | grep render (On Ubuntu) direct rendering: Yes OpenGL renderer string: Software Rasterizer $ glxinfo | grep render (On LMDE) direct rendering: Yes OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI ProSavageDDR 20061110 AGP 1x x86/MMX/SSE2 ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 10.04 Package: xorg 1:7.5+5ubuntu1 Uname: Linux 2.6.32-27-generic i686 Architecture: i386 Date: Thu Jan 20 11:53:32 2011 InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 10.04 LTS "Lucid Lynx" - Release i386 (20100429) ProcEnviron: LANGUAGE=pt_BR:pt:en LANG=pt_BR.utf8 SHELL=/bin/bash SourcePackage: xorg Symptom: display system: distro: Ubuntu codename: lucid architecture: i686 kernel:2.6.32-27-generic + --- + Architecture: i386 + DistroRelease: Ubuntu 10.04 + DkmsStatus: Error: [Errno 2] Arquivo ou diretório não encontrado + GdmLog1: Error: command ['gksu', '-D', 'Apport', '--', 'cat', '/var/log/gdm/:0.log.1'] failed with exit code 1: cat: /var/log/gdm/:0.log.1: No such file or directory + GdmLog2: Error: command ['gksu', '-D', 'Apport', '--', 'cat', '/var/log/gdm/:0.log.2'] failed with exit code 1: cat: /var/log/gdm/:0.log.2: No such file or directory + LiveMediaBuild: Ubuntu 10.04 LTS "Lucid Lynx" - Release i386 (20100429) + Lsusb: + Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub + Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub + Bus 002 Device 002: ID 15d9:0a37 Dexon Mouse + Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub + Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub + Package: xserver-xorg-video-savage 1:2.3.1-1ubuntu1 + PackageArchitecture: i386 + ProcCmdLine: BOOT_IMAGE=/casper/vmlinuz file=/cdrom/preseed/hostname.seed boot=casper initrd=/casper/initrd.lz quiet splash -- locale=pt_BR console-setup/layoutcode?=br console-setup/modelcode?=abnt2 + ProcEnviron: + LANG=pt_BR.UTF-8 + SHELL=/bin/bash + ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 2.6.32-21.32-generic 2.6.32.11+drm33.2 + Tags: lucid lucid + Uname: Linux 2.6.32-21-generic i686 + UnreportableReason: This is not a genuine Ubuntu package + UserGroups: adm admin cdrom dialout lpadmin plugdev sambashare + dmi.bios.date: 09/01/2004 + dmi.bios.vendor: Award Software International, Inc. + dmi.bios.version: F8 + dmi.board.name: P4M266A-8235 + dmi.chassis.type: 3 + dmi.modalias: dmi:bvnAwardSoftwareInternational,Inc.:bvrF8:bd09/01/2004:svn:pn:pvr:rvn:rnP4M266A-8235:rvr:cvn:ct3:cvr: + system: + distro: Ubuntu + codename: lucid + architecture: i686 + kernel: 2.6.32-21-generic ** Attachment added: "BootDmesg.txt" https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/bugs/705464/+attachment/1852518/+files/BootDmesg.txt -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-savage in ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/705464 Title: Ubuntu 10.04 doesn't set hardware acceleration on ProSavageDDR video card ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

Tempted to set back to fixed until there is some stronger evidence the problem still exists. However, setting to incomplete to give folks a chance to try again. Hmm, seems not so easy to reproduce. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 714280] Re: The error was 'BadLength (poly request too large or internal Xlib length erro'.
Not sure if this is driver-related, but I am using the Nouveau driver for my Nvidia Geforce 9600GT, with the experimental Mesa DRI2 driver installed. I am not running Unity, because Compiz currently crashes with the Nouveau DRI2 Gallium3D driver—not sure about the naming here. ;) The crash should be very easy to reproduce: on an up-to-date installation of Natty, install Emerillon, run it and see it never starts. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 716596] Re: Corruption during boot-up
Yeah what I've seen tends to look either like uninitialized memory, or chopped up bits of the screen from a previous login. I can't say for sure if it's a regression since this is pretty much a freshly built box, however I've used the video card in another system with maverick and didn't see this behavior. Hmm, come to think of it, I don't recall seeing it the past couple of days since updating to latest bits, so perhaps the issue has gone. "It was very confusing, multiple dialogue boxes and I kept just pressing 'Report problem' on all of them until I got this bug report (I think the other reports were the same as this)." Ah, sorry it was confusing. Doesn't sound like the tool was actually crashing though, just that you had a build up of reports. Perhaps some of them couldn't be filed for one reason or another, which can be irritating, but that's just sort of how the reporting tool works unfortunately. "The errors appeared after a reboot, the system has been freezing randomly with 11.04... I'll leave the bug status as 'Incomplete' for now, since I'm not sure of the details. Next time it happens I'll record exactly what happens and re-open." Thanks. Actually, the fact that it's been randomly freezing is the clue I need. I will forward this bug report upstream. In the future if you run into another freeze, please do record exactly what happens - that can be very useful information - and if possible file a *new* bug report (we can dupe it to this one if it's identical). My suspicion is that this is a "random freeze" type of bug and will be impossible to narrow to a specific set of steps to reproduce. But the more automatically captured gpu dumps we get, the better our chance of solving it. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/718767 Title: [i945gme] GPU lockup 1d5b69ea (ESR: 0x0001 IPEHR: 0x7272) ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 716596] Re: Corruption during boot-up
It is probably something else that I am seeing. I have plymouth showing up, but since I do not have radeon in the initrd it is only for a fraction of a second. With 2.6.38-1-generic, 2.6.37-12-generic, 2.6.36-1-generic and 2.6.35-22-generic I see the flash of white lines after plymouth, on 2.6.34-5-generic I see it before plymouth, and with 2.6.32-26-generic it is clean. The last two observations can be due to the boot sequence not being very deterministic. I am not gonna repeat all the rebooting for the statistics :) The radeon driver is a snapshot from September. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 718742] Re: Cyborg R.A.T.7 Right Click Issue
This is not a Bug, I'll explain. Okay, figured out the problem. After installing KDE and trying it out there i did not notice the problem as easily. It was still there but not as inherent as it is in Gnome. The problem: We need a new feature request for gnome. The problem is not necessarily the mouse itself, but it is. This mouse has 4 DPI settings. Up to 5600 Dots Per Inch. At that high of a Resolution, the slightest breath will cause the mouse to move a pixel or ten. What is happening is as i'm right clicking it's near humanly impossible to keep the mouse still at such a high resolution. It may appear that you did not move the mouse, but you actually have a couple of pixels. Gnome will have to have the context drawing menu redesigned for such mice with high resolutions or need an option to offset the drawing of the context menu by 3-4 pixels diagonally southeast of the actual pointer so that options are not being selected with the button release of the right click. Something has to be done as more and more mice are having higher and higher resolutions. The only other way this could be fixed is to add an option to not select an option with a release of a right click or delay it's ability to do so by 0.5 or 1 seconds. There is a problem, but it's not a bug, it's a feature request. So please close this bug. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 353126] Re: Compiz / vnc screen refresh with nvidia-restricted driver/VirtualBox/ATI fglrx driver using X.org
I can confirm this is still an issue with Ubuntu 10.10 x64 and ATI/AMD Proprietary FGLRX graphics drivers installed. Linux brutus 2.6.35-25-generic #44-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jan 21 17:40:44 UTC 2011 x86_64 GNU/Linux With Visual Effects enabled, I get no client-side visual refresh from VNC (using ubuntu's built-in vino server) although commands are being processed. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 718742] Re: Cyborg R.A.T.7 Right Click Issue
Apport did not like my manual installation of nvidia drivers. But this problem existed before they were installed. Just an FYI. And if you need me to do or run anything let me know. I'll paste results here. Another thing I noticed was when I run the command XEV. It only registers one button press and one release as I actually do it on the mouse. So in XEV it appears to work correctly. Seems to be related to Gnome. I will install KDE Window manager and report back with results to see if it affects that as well to help narrow this problem down. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg in ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/718742 Title: Cyborg R.A.T.7 Right Click Issue ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 718742] Re: Cyborg R.A.T.7 Right Click Issue
apport information ** Tags added: apport-collected ** Description changed: Okay, we are half way there Ubuntu. I started another bug report which would lock focus to the last X-Window the Cyborg R.A.T.7 gaming mouse had a button press on. That has been fixed with the following in .xmodmap file or xorg.conf file. Section "InputClass" Identifier "Mouse Remap" MatchProduct "Saitek Cyborg R.A.T.7 Mouse" MatchDevicePath "/dev/input/event*" Option "ButtonMapping" "1 2 3 4 5 6 7 2 9 10 11 12 0 0 0" EndSection Now the focus issue is fixed with direct mapping, but there is still a problem. When you right click whether it be on a desktop or x-window of any kind to bring up the context menu. It is acting as if the right click is doing a button press, button release, then a button press and button release again, all with one actual full click and release causing you to accidentally select the first context menu option without having a chance to scroll down. The only way to not accidentally select the first menu option is to HOLD down the right click and not release until you are over your correct context menu option. To describe further. Currently I have to create the habit of clicking the right mouse key and HOLD while scrolling down to the correct context menu I wish to select, then upon release it selects the item. The way this should work is upon "button release" of the right click, the context menu should come up, not upon the "button press". Then the menu should pop up and you should not be holding any buttons down at all, scroll to your desired option in the context menu, then LEFT click your option. - I'm not sure which package this belongs to, but it sounds like it could - be an xorg package of some sort. + I'm not sure which package this belongs to, but it sounds like it could be an xorg package of some sort. + --- + Architecture: amd64 + DistroRelease: Ubuntu 10.10 + InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 10.10 "Maverick Meerkat" - Release amd64 (20101007) + NonfreeKernelModules: nvidia + Package: xorg 1:7.5+6ubuntu3 + PackageArchitecture: amd64 + ProcEnviron: + LANG=en_US.utf8 + SHELL=/bin/bash + ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 2.6.35-25.44-generic 2.6.35.10 + Tags: maverick + Uname: Linux 2.6.35-25-generic x86_64 + UnreportableReason: The drivers from nvidia.com are not supported by Ubuntu.
