Ubuntu 10.10 here still seeing this bug:
Fatal server error:

Happens a lot when viewing minecraft maps in firefox (large jpg or png
files). Sometimes i can load them, but if I load and reload and switch
tabs and back to the big image tab, it will eventually crash X with the
above message.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 714829] Re: Xorg segfaults during LiveCD installation using preseed file

2011-02-24 Thread Bryce Harrington
Not sure how I associated with 2.5.6 with 1/17. But 2.5.9 (rev 380) on
1/14 is the better match.

I've prepared a ubiquity package with Cyrus Lien change from rev 380
reverted. Robert's testing indicates this seems to eliminate the
problem. I seem to be unable to reproduce the original bug on my 945
mini after multiple tries, so can't confirm the fix.

https://launchpad.net/~bryce/+archive/durian

But I'm hoping Daniel can use my package to confirm reverting the patch
fixes the error.

If it does make the issue go away, I'm not sure it can be classified as
a true fix, since it'll revert the fix for bug #693300 but at least
that's just a cosmetic issue that I guess the Ubiquity guys can figure
out a better fix for.

My graphics card is right now a Matrox Millenium G400 32mb AGP card.. im
not running the drivers from their site as they said i had a never
version of x server than the drivers worked with. So im running those
included in ubuntu 10.10 from the start..

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 714829] Re: Xorg segfaults during LiveCD installation using preseed file

2011-02-24 Thread Daniel Manrique
I have reproduced this on a Lenovo Thinkpad X201 (bug 720238) and Dell
Vostro 3400 (bug 721220) - I just re-checked the Dell just for kicks and
it's sitting here, all crashed, in front of me.

Is there a way for me to test a build with Robert's patch applied? I can
test it across all our certification systems and let you know how it
behaves.

only some of the version number is popped off the end of the version.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 714829] Re: Xorg segfaults during LiveCD installation using preseed file

2011-02-24 Thread Robert Hooker
This should be reproducable on pretty much any atom netbook with a 945
from what I can see, just boot a natty daily livecd and let it sit on
the welcome screen for a few minutes. You can watch /var/log/Xorg.0.log
and the bo map errors will start up before it eventually crashes. I
think I have narrowed it down to this change in ubiquity:

http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~ubuntu-
branches/ubuntu/natty/ubiquity/natty/revision/380#src/panel/panel.c

reverting that change with the attached patch fixes the problem here but
it could use more testing.

2011-02-24 Thread Daniel Manrique
This crash is now happening for us pretty reliably even without our test
configuration, i.e. with a "pristine" image. Bug 720235 details one of
the "look ma, no hands" crashes we had, and I just had another one with
the latest (today) desktop image.

post-crash, here's the i915_gem_objects file asked for by Timo:

Now what seems odd here is that this system has a swap file (picked up
/dev/sda5 from a previous installation attempt), so it would seem to me
that, if a process were gobbling up memory, the system would start
thrashing before X crashed. In my experience this doesn't happen. But
admittedly I have no idea how X handles memory for applications so I
might be way off the mark here.

Since the problem is reproducible on the pristine image, I'll see what I
can do to monitor the list of processes for runaway memory consumption,
and report back here as soon as I have something.

Thanks all for your help!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 579071] Re: savage_drv fails drawpix glDrawPixels demo/test/benchmark

2011-02-24 Thread Tormod Volden
Thanks Dewey. But are you not on maverick, as per comment 15? The libdrm
packages are for maverick, although they may work fine in lucid as well.
I think the RegionEmptyData error indicates that the X server is too old
for the driver, which will also be the case if you are running the
maverick -savage on the lucid X server.

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-input-synaptics

After installing latest upgrades of xorg-input files integrated touchpad dont
react on moves / tips anymore.
FN+F7 to enable / disable (touchpad and) mousebuttons work, left / right
mouse-button work, touch-field dont work.
Glad to have an external USB-mouse found in a box.

This is really a regression to the driver before.

Any tipps to solve this problem ?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 655001] Re: Upgrading to 10.10RC removed fglrx. After reboot X was not usable (only displaying colored dots and stripes).

2011-02-24 Thread Ronald Verbeek
I am not able to reproduce this problem. (Not willing to use my
production laptop to reinstall 10.04 and upgrade to 10.10 again). When I
encounter the same issue again upgrading to 11.04 I will file a new
bugreport.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 636094] Re: Random system freeze [Xalloc: requesting unpleasantly large amount of memory: 0 bytes.]

2011-02-24 Thread Ruslans Tarasovs
It seems that the following change is to blame:
http://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/xserver/commit/?id=e983848ab44b0769f97f6207f1aa8b4f127be6a9

I wonder if NVIDIA drivers are not allocating memory correctly.

I installed these libdrm packages but the savage_drv didn't load

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 714829] Re: Xorg segfaults during LiveCD installation using preseed file

2011-02-24 Thread Bryce Harrington
Fwiw, we've been getting these out-of-memory-leading-to-X-crash bugs for
about a month. The first reported bug I can recall was Mario's bug
#705078 dated 2011-01-19.

I see ubiquity 2.5.6 was uploaded on 2011-01-17. If it is an X client
leaking and we think the installer is a suspect, then the ubiquity
changes in that version would be worth reviewing. In addition to the
ubiquity changes (which sound innocuous from the changelog entries), it
also incuded updates to grub-installer 1.57ubuntu2, netcfg 1.57ubuntu3,
partman-auto 93ubuntu3, partman-target 71ubuntu1, user-setup
1.28ubuntu12, so I guess any of those could be candidates.

Is there a way we can pinpoint what X client is gobbling the memory?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 724514] Re: GPU hang

2011-02-24 Thread Christoph Pospiech
I forgot to add -
- the error is *not* reproducible.
- I was pointed to https://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=301282
  and https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/17920
which appear to be similar if not duplicate bug reports from this report.
The comments on these bug reports seem to indicate that a later intel driver
should fix the problem.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 724342] Re: pointer mode not available with ntrig touchscreen

2011-02-24 Thread Chase Douglas
I'm wondering if this isn't a configuration or package inconsistency. I
suggest trying a daily iso (one that contains all the new xi 2.1 stuff
of course) to see if it works properly. With all our ppas we use, the
install could really be in a wonky state.

P.S. As an example, I downgraded from the xorg-edgers ppa which
downgraded libx11 from 1.3.4 to 1.3.3. My keyboard stopped working. I
had to reupgrade to the xorg-edgers version of libx11 for it to work
again. I still have no idea why.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 723747] Re: Cant login to desktop

2011-02-24 Thread Tormod Volden
My guess is that compiz, while checking if it is possible to run on your
card (which it probably is not), makes X crash.

The XorgLogOld.txt shows that the X server crashed:

Backtrace:

Caught signal 11 (Segmentation fault). Server aborting
[ 213.025]

Does it crash if you run "glxinfo"?

It would help if you can provide information as explained on
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Backtracing at least installing the -dbg
packages and attaching the new Xorg.0.log.old after restarting and
reproducing the crash.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 713666] Re: package nvidia-current 260.19.06-0ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade when running from Live USB

2011-02-24 Thread Ubuntu QA's Bug Bot
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 691985 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/691985

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, the package installation error message
that you have received is actually a failure with lzma and a generic one
at that. The following steps may help resolve the issue. Please
execute the following command, as it will clear your package cache, in a
terminal:

sudo apt-get clean

Then try performing the update again as this may resolve your issue. We
plan to make lzma errors more informative and that work is being tracked
in bug 691985 which I will mark this a duplicate of.

** Tags added: lzma-efail

** This bug has been marked a duplicate of bug 691985
lzma: Encoder error: -2147467259 is too vague and causes unhelpful
apport-package reports

I try to get Natty running with a Intel Core i3 and the integrated graphic card.
But it seems that xorg don't recognize the card. The driver seems loaded
correctly and the i915 module is also loaded

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 712109] Re: Assert failure in hook for xserver-xorg-video-nouveau

2011-02-24 Thread Matt Zimmerman
It looks like there are probably several other bugs of this type in the
hook, e.g.:

upgraded = command_output_quiet(
['head', '-n', '1', '/var/log/dist-upgrade/apt.log'])
if len(upgraded) > 0:

len(None) will generate a TypeError.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 712109] Re: Assert failure in hook for xserver-xorg-video-nouveau

2011-02-24 Thread Matt Zimmerman
This one looks fairly specific to the nouveau hook to me. It's failing
while attempting to attach the result of command_output_quiet, which can
be None, and I bet that's what's happening.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 724342] Re: pointer mode not available with ntrig touchscreen

2011-02-24 Thread Chase Douglas
It would be very helpful to be able to replay events from an affected
device on a different computer. This is possible using utouch-evemu.
Please do the following:

1. $ sudo apt-get install utouch-evemu-tools
2. Determine the /dev/input/event* node for your device
3. Switch to a virtual terminal (VT) by pressing ctrl-alt-f1 or running $ sudo
chvt 1
4. log in to the VT
5. $ sudo evemu-describe (insert event node here) > device.prop
6. $ sudo evemu-record (insert event node here) > device.record
7. Swipe a few times on the trackpad
8. Wait for evemu-record to finish
9. Switch back to X by pressing ctrl-alt-f7 or running $ sudo chvt 7 (If that
doesn't work, try f8 or f9 or chvt 8 or chvt 9)

evemu-record will end when no activity has occurred for about 10
seconds. So after starting the recording, begin swiping within a few
seconds. Then wait until the process finishes.

Attach the device.prop and device.record files to this bug. Check to be
sure they

Thanks!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 724051] Re: upgrade to 1.3.99+git20110116.0e27ce3a-0ubuntu4 breaks touchpad

2011-02-24 Thread Henrik Rydberg
I verified that the fix in the debian package resolves the issue, so
Bilal, if it does for you too, a new package will be on its way shortly.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 724342] [NEW] pointer mode not available with ntrig touchscreen

2011-02-24 Thread Mohamed IKBEL Boulabiar
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-input-evdev

I don't have touch mode (or pointer mode) and can't click on things on my ntrig
screen.
I have a magic trackpad and it works, so this is limited to ntrig touchscreen.
the other part of the uTouch stack works (geis gestures, Ginn)

The /dev/input directory has many duplicate entries for example : [event10 ..
event18] are all "ntrig pen",
and there are many "ntrig touchscreen" too

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 724051] Re: upgrade to 1.3.99+git20110116.0e27ce3a-0ubuntu4 breaks touchpad

2011-02-24 Thread Chase Douglas
It appears this is a bug triggered by a multi-finger, non-mt trackpad.
Trackpads that do not give the number of fingers on the surface and
multitouch trackpads are unaffected.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 724051] Re: upgrade to 1.3.99+git20110116.0e27ce3a-0ubuntu4 breaks touchpad

2011-02-24 Thread Chase Douglas
For those interested, you can reproduce this issue by running:

1. $ sudo evemu-device device.prop
  - This will create a new /dev/input/event* node for the virtual device
2. $ sudo evemu-play (/dev/input/event* node from step 1) < device.record

The device files come from Bilal's attachments above.
