[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 661248] Re: Nvidia GeForce 8600M GT doesn't work with nvidia-current 260

2011-05-01 Thread Alfred Homan
It simply does not work with kernel 2.6.32.
Affected all ubuntu systems 10.04 LTS.
Changing nvidia driver does not help at all.

This is clearly not an nvidia-graphics-drivers but a regression in the linux
kernel or kernel options.
Guys who build kernel for the ubuntu should just make a diff on 2.6.32 and find
out what has been broken.

Affected hardware:

Asus M2N-68 (AMD on AM2) / NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GT (pci-e)
Acer Aspire 5920G (Intel Core 2 Duo T7300) / NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT (pci-e)
some AMD 64 system / NVIDIA GeForce 7200 GS (pci-e)
N86PV-GS (AMD on AM2) / NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GTX (pci-e)

Solution I use for now:

sudo apt-add-repository deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ lucid main
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install linux-headers-2.6.32-21
sudo apt-get install linux-headers-2.6.32-21-generic
sudo apt-get install linux-image-2.6.32-21-generic

Me too

The display attempts to show a desktop, but cycles between a plain
background and then a background with expected desktop icons (and then
back to a plain desktop, ad infinitum). Booting into safe mode works as
expected with a message about Unity.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 773004] Re: Kernel oops during shutdown process

2011-05-01 Thread Sergey Chebotar
Hi Mike, thank you.
Downgraded to LTS because of this oops, system overheating and video lags.
Definetly this driver doesn't work well.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 769288] Re: Desktop is never stable, always flickering [drm:intel_prepare_page_flip] *ERROR* Prepared flip multiple times

2011-05-01 Thread Jeremy
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 765813 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/765813

I have a problem that may be the same as yours. I just upgraded to 11.04
from 10.10 and I've tried both Unity and [currently using] Classic GNOME
2. When I mouse over icons in Avant Window Navigator or click indicator-
applets, the screen goes CRAZY, crashing emerald my display. I have
tried this with no fglrx, the included fglrx and ATI's new drivers, with
Compiz and without compiz, with Emerald and with Metacity and it doesn't
make a difference. I thought it was a bug with compositing but it seems
to happen even when compositing is off.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 772207] Re: version 173.14.30 is buggy for GeForce FX 5200

2011-05-01 Thread Rudi Daemen
Same problem here using a Nvidia Quadro FX 880M card.

Driver is activated but not currently in use.

Using glxgears, it said it did about 4000 fps on the command line but on
the display the gears are only moving at about 1 frame every 5 seconds.
glxinfo states direct rendering is enabled.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 737972] Re: drm:i915_hangcheck_elapsed] *ERROR* Hangcheck timer elapsed... GPU hung

2011-05-01 Thread Will Bickerstaff
mic I see the same, typically when I bring up the find box in chromium
(ctrl+f), but not always. If I notice the display freeze quick enough
and switch to a VT wait a few seconds and switch back before my display
gets garbled I can occasionally rescue it. I'm not sure this is
particular to chrome/chromium though as I've had similar experiences
when using inkscape.

Dmesg has:
[35115.968171] [drm:i915_hangcheck_elapsed] *ERROR* Hangcheck timer elapsed...
GPU hung
[35115.969488] [drm:i915_do_wait_request] *ERROR* i915_do_wait_request returns
-11 (awaiting 797622 at 797620, next 797623)
[35115.969634] [drm:i915_reset] *ERROR* Failed to reset chip.

I'll catch those other logs next time it happens.

nvidia driver. I will mark this fix released.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 649809] Re: the session settings manager can try starting before the login screen one exits

2011-05-01 Thread theclaw
I think I found the reason for the bug, however I don't have a
satisfactory solution.

It seems that when removing / renaming the file '.Xmodmap' (which is
located in the user's home directory) so that gnome doesn't find it
anymore when logging in, gnome-settings-daemon gets started correctly.
Found this out my successively removing dot-files in my home directory
until it worked (very frustrating).

However, now I don't have .Xmodmap anymore :-(

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 747729] Re: fglrx crashes X server on startup

2011-05-01 Thread Beat Müller
After some more trying I found the following facts: Default kernel is
vmlinuz-2.6.38-8-generic-pae,
but when I use vmlinuz-2.6.38-8-generic (i. e. without this physical address
extension) it works
perfectly. Are there boot option which prevent a fglrx crash?

If someone gives me some hints I could try more stuff, since I am not too
experienced with kernel
fiddling.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 773471] Re: No brightness on LCD monitor (Acer Aspire 5732Z)

2011-05-01 Thread Wolfgang Kufner
I have just found a fix for my system. Add this ppa:
https://launchpad.net/~kamalmostafa/+archive/linux-kamal-mjgbacklight
to your sources e.g. with:
sudo apt-add-repository ppa:kamalmostafa/linux-kamal-mjgbacklight
then reload the package information and upgrade your system (e.g. with synaptic)

This should give you a new kernel and gnome-power-manager. Shut down and
boot.

For my system this kernel gives me full hotkey backlight control. I hope
it works for you too. Let me know how it goes.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 659473] Re: gitk crashes entire X session

2011-05-01 Thread shorty
I have the same problem.
Running Ubuntu 11.04 (Natty) with the ubuntu-classic desktop (gnome) and the
nouveau driver.

I also installed the xserver-xorg-video-nouveau
(1:0.0.16+git20110323.8378443b-0ubuntu0sarvatt) from the x-edgers ppa but the
Screen still crashes (Image is frozen but cursor still follows mouse
movements).
I have to reboot the machine.

Any thoughts?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 772207] Re: version 173.14.30 is buggy for GeForce FX 5200

2011-05-01 Thread Michael Pelley
I have the same problem - Drive installed but not activated. I have a Dell
XPS L501X with the nVidia GeForce GT 435M.

* glxgears post over 4,500 fps but on the screen they don't move at all (they,
_can't_ be going that fast, can they?).
* NVIDIA X Server Settings info:
 * driver 270.41.06
 * GLX Information: Direct Rendering - yes, Version 1.4
 * OpenGL Information: Version 4.1.0 NVIDIA 270.41.06

I can run both Unity and Classic but I have no 3D effects at all. The
plain old Alt-Tab gives very poor resolution of the running apps.

The video card, via gkrellm, seems to indicate that the GPU is running
about 10C higher under 11.04 versus 10.10.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 774373] Re: xorg crashes after the execution of a x application

2011-05-01 Thread Phoenix87
I can provide this additional piece of information: when the screen
freezes i switch to tty1, login to my account, and sudo killall Xorg. I
can hear Xorg restarting because speakers play the usual login screen
sound. But the screen is completely black (it is still turned on, but
completely black). The tty's are just fine, i can read and write on
them.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 771716] Re: middle click emulation not working

2011-05-01 Thread Marcus Wanner
Using a Kensington Orbit Trackball here and don't want to hack my
xorg.conf. It's not a new user thing to do, and just because everyone
here is assumed (rightly, I hope) to be competent enough to do so does
not mean that everyone using ubuntu will be able to. I'm not seeing why
having this enabled by default is bad...why wouldn't a user want this?
It's not like one is going to continually accidentally hit both buttons
at once, or even occasionally. I never have. Having a GUI to configure
this (as part of gnome-mouse-properties as someone else suggested) would
be acceptable.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 669253] Re: Nvidia proprietary driver unable to initialize

2011-05-01 Thread CSkau
apport information

** Tags added: natty ubuntu

** Description changed:

I installed a fresh Ubuntu 10.10 and installed the proprietary driver
(nvidia-current) suggested by the system.
Upon reboot it fails while starting GDM, leaving me with a blinking cursor in
tty7.

I'm able to jump to tty1 and log in.
The cause is that installing said driver (naturally) changes the driver in
xorg.conf to nvidia, as should.
But since this module fails, X fails and GDM fails.

The relevant lines from dmesg are:

[ 392.594219] NVRM: failed to copy vbios to system memory.
  [ 392.596521] NVRM: RmInitAdapter failed! (0x30:0x:820)
  [ 392.596542] NVRM: rm_init_adapter(0) failed

In my xorg logs I'm seeing:

To patch it up I simply use Intel as a fall back driver on the first
'device' in the xorg.conf.
Doing so I'm able to start X and GDM.

I've tried installing both Ubuntu's and Nvidia's own drivers (256 and
  260).

I've reproduced this on two fresh installs of 10.10 on the same machine,
and many times over on the latest install.
