[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 767436] Re: compiz crashed with SIGSEGV in brw_validate_state()

2011-05-03 Thread Bryce Harrington
You should also check your dmesg and
/sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/i915_error_state when you ssh into it when it's
down, in the case that the issue is a gpu lockup.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 766510] Re: [sandybridge-gt1] Fonts and UI elements have artifacts around them and look bad

2011-05-03 Thread Bryce Harrington
Hmm, my old man eyes don't see anything obviously erroneous offhand.
Try using gimp to zoom in on the areas you see as problematic, and
provide some correctly-rendered version of the ubuntu desktop that is
not showing the issue.

I'll set it to invalid; if you definitely think it should be in oneiric,
feel free to reopen. Make sure to tag it 'oneiric' so it'll be included
in our development queue.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 726496] Re: Cannot use Unity or Classic desktop with effects after the latest nvidia+xorg update

2011-05-03 Thread John M
This affects me as well. (Nvidia 7300 LE)

When booting into ubuntu classic (no effects) and then enabling compiz
with `compiz --replace` it causes the same problem. Killing compiz
unfreezes it. Disabling the compiz 'OpenGL plugin' (pretty essential),
also prevents the freeze.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 748768] Re: Why does my mouse point to a place besides where the cursor is pointing?

2011-05-03 Thread Devin
apport information

** Description changed:

  Ubuntu 10.10

I Printed Screen to show what I'm talking about while the problem is ongoing.
But, I opened the picture and it looked normal instead even while the problem
was ongoing. Whenever I boot up the computer it is like this or after I fix it
and then the screen saver starts it reverts back to the problem. The power
management does not cause this problem. The problem was there from the start:
during the installation. I can fix it temporarily by applying a different
resolution and then reverting back to the resolution without saving the new
applied resolution. This fixes both the pointer from pointing at the bottom of
the pointer icon and the whole screen, even besides the background, from being
tiled and cut off at the bottom the same distance that the pointer points
problematically. The screen is also shifted to the left. The left part that is
cut off is shown on the right side of the monitor. But the mouse does not show
on the right side when I put it past the left side, only everything else. The
cut off portion at the bottom does not come out the other side at the top, but
the top menu bar is larger than normal and the Firefox icon has a blue streak
emanating from the end of the blue portion of the Firefox logo straight to the
top. If I enter Configure Display Settings again after it is fixed, it right
away makes the problem again. I expect it to fit the screen without me having
to, temporarily, fix it. I'm using a Dell monitor, model number: E172FPt.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 748768] Re: Why does my mouse point to a place besides where the cursor is pointing?

2011-05-03 Thread Devin
The description of the problem is that you know how there are three
point to the triangle on the mouse pointer? Well, my pointer selects
things that are on the bottom left point instead of the top point. The
screen displays the same proportion off center with the edges that are
cut of appear on the other side of the monitor as in the pictures I
took, despite me adjusting the screen positioning with the buttons on
the outside of the monitor.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 725434] Re: Nvidia drivers lead to extra memory usage for each process using libGL

2011-05-03 Thread Bryce Harrington
So cairo (1.10.2-2ubuntu2) may didn't break wayland, I guess

Regardless, seb128 added a 'breaks' in the packaging against wayland, so
having cairo installed now makes wayland uninstallable.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 754799] Re: [arrandale] external VGA output doesn't output anything (i686)

2011-05-03 Thread Bryce Harrington
[I've marked this bug for inclusion in our oneiric bug queue. While
technically this bug has not been re-confirmed against oneiric, I feel
it is worth continued development attention. We will need to ask that
it be re-confirmed once oneiric is further along, perhaps once we get
closer to alpha.]

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 661248] Re: Nvidia GeForce 8600M GT doesn't work with nvidia-current 260

2011-05-03 Thread Alfred Homan
This is not only System76 issue, it's GTS 250, 9800 GT, 9800 GTX, 8600M,
9200M and probably a lot more.
There's atleast 15 ppl only on the launchpad.

Quotes:

I am having the Exact same issue with my MSI GTS250
I have GeForce 8600m GT on Acer ASPIRE 5920G laptop and have the identical
problem - 2 with 5920g
I'm getting the exact same symptoms (...), but I'm on a GeForce GTS 250
Asus M2N-68 motherboard and a generic 9800GT, all of which worked fine in
Lucid
a similar Problem with my Dell Studio XPS 1340. (...) The 9400m works fine,
but the 9200m is not working

Nvidia site:

http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=2335295
nvidia.ko says my GTS 250 is not supported on 260.19.xx
This is not an Nvidia issue, but a regression in the Linux kernel. The Ubuntu
bug tacking this issue is:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/661394;

First time I faced this problem on 32-bit 10.10 (2.6.35), the only solution was
kernel = 2.6.32.
A few days ago I've tried an absolutely fresh installation of 11.04 x86_64.
No X server neither on default drivers nor latest nvidia drivers.
Had to roll back to 2.6.32 as well.

My system is AsRock N86PV-GS + Athlon 64 X2 + 9800 GTX
On any kernel 2.6.32 dmesg says: probe of :02:00.0 failed with error -1

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 760632] Re: Resizing Konsole crashes the whole system

2011-05-03 Thread mr.goose
Seems NVIDIA is well aware of the issue - and has been for the last
month! Sadly there is little sign of any activity from NVIDIA with
regard to solving the issue.

http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=161180
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=161308

Also seems this bug report has been duplicated here:-
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/772311

Finally, it is possible to hang the system with gnome-terminal too!
Granted, gnome-terminal is not quite as unstable as konsole. But if you
fill the gnome-terminal window (e.g. run ls on a large directory),
then grab the edge of the gnome-terminal window and resize it a bit,
then it will start creating some strange artefacts on-screen. If you
continue resizing then eventually it will hang. Sometimes you will have
to wobble it about a bit. Other times it will hang straight away.

Best wishes, G.

2011-05-03 Thread Bryce Harrington
@Robin, would be interested to hear if one of the mainline kernels
(2.6.37.x or 2.6.39.x) resolves it for you. http://kernel.ubuntu.com
/~kernel-ppa/mainline

This is likely to be a kernel issue, and particularly Joshua's comment
suggests it might be fixed in a newer or older kernel.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 353137] Re: missing pixels when drawing connecting lines

2011-05-03 Thread Graeme Geldenhuys
Yes this bug still exists in Ubuntu 10.04 and Ubuntu 11.04. I have
recently experimented with various X11 setups too. If I use the
FrameBuffer driver (fbdev) the bug is gone. If I use the proprietary
AMD/ATI Radeon driver the bug is gone. It seems only if I use the open
source ATI (ati) or ATI Radeon (radeon) driver then the bug is there. So
maybe that gives some clues as to where this bug is located?

** Tags added: apport-collected natty ubuntu

** Description changed:

  Hi
I've noticed a fairly long startup time.
Looking at Xorg.0.log I notice a lot of entries about EDID quirk.
I think the edid data from the inbuilt monitor is in a different format than
what the intel video driver is expecting.
First bug report and quite new to linux so forgive me if something is missing
or just written the wrong way.
  Thanks

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 703255] Re: Edid quirk entries in xorg.0.log

2011-05-03 Thread Stefano
Hi.
Looking at the xorg.log file I can see that the problem is still there
after the upgrade to Natty.
I've run the apport-collect bug-number from Natty and sent the report.
Thanks
Stefano

 Hey Stefano,

Thanks for your interest in Ubuntu.

Thanks for testing maverick during its development period.
Unfortunately it looks like this bug report didn't get attention during
the maverick development period. But I see there's not been more
comments on the bug since the release, which makes me wonder if this is
 still an issue for you?

If you've not seen this issue since maverick's release yourself, it may
have been solved by kernel or X or other updates that occurred late in
the release; if so, would you mind please closing the bug for us? Go to
the URL mentioned in this bug report, click the yellow icon(s) in the
status column and set to 'Fix Released'.

If you no longer have the hardware needed to reproduce the problem, or
otherwise feel the bug no longer needs tracked in Launchpad, you can set
 the status to 'Invalid'.

If you are the original reporter and still have this issue, just reply
to this email saying so. (Or set the bug status to Confirmed.) If you
are able to re-test this against 11.04 Natty Narwhal (our current
development focus) and find the issue still affects Natty, please also
run 'apport-collect bug-number' while running natty, which will add
fresh logs and debug data, and flag it for the Ubuntu-X development team
 to look at.

My screen freezes from time to time in Natty (didn't happen in
Maverick). All I can do is move my cursor. I have tried going into the

Note: I am not sure if it is a X.org issue, although I was told that it
probably is on askubuntu.com...

+ Tried service gdm restart. Gives black screen (some network related text on

+ Okay. So now as I changed sync to VBlank to false and refresh rate to my
+ screen's, instead of being all calm, everything starts flashing as if I
+ was minimising and unminimising windows, commonly with colour issues

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 600178] Re: Screen tearing when dragging window, in videos and other large screen redraws (on nVidia GPU)

2011-05-03 Thread Guiodic (Guido Iodice)
It seems impossible to have tear-free video playback in Natty.
I tried pretty everithing in nvidia-setting and in compiz. I also set some
enviromental variable in .bashrc as suggested in some wikis.
But using Mutter instead of Compiz, it doesn't tear videos. So, I tried to
downgrade compiz to 0.8.6, but even this version presents tear. I installed
nvidia-173 but tear was still here.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 776198] [NEW] xorg and nvidia give very bad performance on multi display setup after update to ubuntu 11.04

2011-05-03 Thread Andreas
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: xorg

this is a two graphic cards, three monitors setup. I've been using this now for
many years with ubuntu.
After the update to ubuntu 11.04 the entire GUI experience is extremely slow
and lags. This behaviour even occurs with the 'ubuntu standard no effects'
desktop session! very annoying.
If I drag a round a gedit window for example, the xorg process (as visible in
'top') will use up to 99% of my CPU power.
Anyway, since the standard desktop was just working fine with the previous
ubuntu versions, I would expect the latest one to work just fine too.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 706890] Re: dual monitors garbled display on 10.10 with Radeon X600

2011-05-03 Thread Bob Paulson
apport information

** Description changed:

Since I upgraded from Lucid to Maverick (official release with latest
updates), the display with dual non-mirrored monitors does not work. I
  have a Dell Dimension 9150 with 2 GB RAM, Intel Pentium 4 dual-core 3
GHz CPU and a Radeon X600 graphics chip. This worked fine in Lucid and
  Windows XP.

My setup: Samsung 17 SyncMaster 171s VGA 60 Hz on left, and 19 Samsung
SyncMaster 943 DVI 75 Hz on right, both at 1280 x 1024. The Radeon
controller has a VGA and a DVI socket and the two monitors are connected
as indicated. Mirrored monitors display fine. But using System -
Monitor Preferences, uncheck Same image in all monitors, click on
Apply, and the right-hand monitor (19 DVI) completely garbles the right
half of the display from top to bottom. Also tried 60 Hz, no change.

I ran Update Manager to get the latest official updates, googled and
tried various suggestions, such as bleeding.edge xorg stuff, but it
was no help. Not sure if this is supposed to have been resolved or not.
So I downgraded to 10.4 where it works fine.

Would be great to get an answer as to how to fix this problem - thanks.

  - Bob Paulson

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 760632] Re: Resizing Konsole crashes the whole system

2011-05-03 Thread eagles051387
This problem as a previous post i confirmed, if one disable desktop
effects it actually fixes the issue.

On 03/05/2011 09:20, mr.goose wrote:
Seems NVIDIA is well aware of the issue - and has been for the last
month! Sadly there is little sign of any activity from NVIDIA with
 regard to solving the issue.

 http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=161180
 http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=161308

Also seems this bug report has been duplicated here:-
 https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/772311

Finally, it is possible to hang the system with gnome-terminal too!
Granted, gnome-terminal is not quite as unstable as konsole. But if you
fill the gnome-terminal window (e.g. run ls on a large directory),
then grab the edge of the gnome-terminal window and resize it a bit,
then it will start creating some strange artefacts on-screen. If you
continue resizing then eventually it will hang. Sometimes you will have
to wobble it about a bit. Other times it will hang straight away.

 Best wishes, G.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 706890] Re: dual monitors garbled display on 10.10 with Radeon X600

2011-05-03 Thread Bob Paulson
I did a clean install of natty on the affected machine. As with the live
CD/USB, it has the same problem - both monitors are completely garbled
when I enable dual non-mirrored monitors. I ran apport-collect 706890
(again, I have no idea why it only lists Dependencies.txt in the
preceding message, it told me on the computer that it was sending a
whole list of stuff as it did last February under maverick).

So I logged out and logged in again with Ubuntu Classic (no effects) and
it works ok.

2011-05-03 Thread PresuntoRJ
Next time it freezes, I will collet the data and post on this bug. Not sure
how my box will be affected with a recent kernel upgrade, though.

2011/5/3 Bryce Harrington 768...@bugs.launchpad.net

For X freeze bugs on Intel, you need to collect the output of 'dmesg'
and your /sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/i915_error_state file. Both of these
must be collected while the machine is locked up (e.g. by sshing into
 the sick machine over ethernet).

Similarly to other intel related bugs, I will try to post the collected data
when my box freezes again... not sure how it will behave with a newly

2011/5/3 Bryce Harrington 767...@bugs.launchpad.net

You should also check your dmesg and
/sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/i915_error_state when you ssh into it when it's
down, in the case that the issue is a gpu lockup.
