[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 682287] Re: Black Screen at Start
apport information ** Tags added: apport-collected natty needs-reassignment regression- update ubuntu ** Description changed: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-sis I have an old acre aspire 3500 with sis graphic video card. When Ubuntu start with 2.6.35.26-generic and screen resolution is 1024x768 the computer show only black screen. However, I noticed it is in working condition because if I blindly hit Ctrl+Alt+Delete and then press enter, the computer proceed with normal shut down. But if the Ubuntu start with 2.6.35.23-generic and the screen resolution is 1024x768 it works fine without the black start-up screen. Therefore, I changed the monitor to the next available resolution which is 1024x576 and did restart I found that the computer is working normally. I tried the recommendations in bug 584339 and add sisfb to grub and install v86d but without any success. Please inform what I can do to restore the screen resolution to 1024x768 without black screen at start. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 710144] Re: Xsession: unable to launch X session --- not found; falling back to default session.
This bug appeared to me after I upgraded to Natty 11.04, from 64 bit version of 10.10. I tried Ivan Firago's suggestion (chmod -x /usr/bin/which) and it DID work, but since some programs need it, like firefox's lauching script, that will not solve the problem for me. @Bryce Sorry to take so long to get back to you. It almost never happens when I first hit the site, but while I'm navigating. The time it takes varies. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 778758] Re: The apport hook discourages new bug reports
Perhaps if the hook added a tech-supported tag to bugs that had already gone through tech support so that those bugs can rise to the top? Or if you could import an AskUbuntu question into a bug report so it feels like asking on AskUbuntu is an important step in the bug reporting process. (Yes, copy-paste does most of that, but I think psychologically it's very different.) I'm not sure how that all would be implemented, but it's not a bad idea. It's frustrating as a user to run ubuntu-bug to report a bug, then be told to go to askubuntu, then be told there that it's a bug and you should report it. However, I also want developers to spend their available time fixing real bugs. Right, this came out of a discussion I had with Jorge in Dallas. A huge proportion of the people filing bugs against X post-release are more motivated to get a quick workaround to get their machine working. Once they have a workaround they're less interested in expending time with the additional testing, git-bisecting, and diagnostics needed to root cause a problem. So... we get into the situation of fixing hardware one machine at a time, which doesn't scale that well. Further, these users get annoyed because pretty much only developers answer X bug reports on launchpad, and there are very few developers and they're very busy so it's common that users report a bug and not get a response for a long time (if ever). By the time a developer does cycle through to them, the user has either found some other way to work around the problem or given up, and so the bug is unworkable. I believe we serve these types of users better by directing them out of launchpad to forums or support sites where they're more likely to get a timely response and guidance to published workarounds... or yeah, it's a bug, file it in launchpad. If we can leverage askubuntu.com better, we can solve both needs - users get faster replies and quicker help working around problems, and developers don't have to dig through as much noise to find the bugs that really need fixing. Although, I'll admit I hadn't considered that the compiz folks might prefer to have all bug reports filed, even support requests and such. It would be pretty trivial to conditionalize this dialog to not run for compiz/unity bugs. ** Changed in: xorg (Ubuntu) Assignee: (unassigned) = Bryce Harrington (bryce) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/778758 Title: The apport hook discourages new bug reports ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 774978] Re: xserver seg'd [945GM]
Bryce: My problem is I can't trigger this on demand; it happens once in a while. The machine was originally installed years ago and has been upgraded through alpha's and beta's too natty; it's running Unity single headed on the laptops intel LCD. It mostly just runs pidgin watching irc and a terminal or two, and synergyc gluing it's keyboard to my other machine. I have a firefox that sits there and gets the occasional link I click on in irc, and it does seem to be related to firefox when it crashes. The firefox is in a separate workspace to the right of the one I'm in most of the time (I run 3x3 workspace). The page it failed last time on was http://www.bmreports.com/bsp/bsp_home.htm although that's happy at the moment. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 556782] [NEW] [rs690m] Graphics corruption with ati x1200
You have been subscribed to a public bug by Brian Visel (eode): [Edit:] This bug has been around for almost a year now, and has gotten rather long, so this is a brief summary. There is a memory corruption issue that affects users of the rs690m, to varying degrees. For many, if not most, it makes the desktop unusable. There is a workaround: Regression: This workaround now only provides 2d graphics [natty]. [code] sudo su echo options radeon modeset=0 /etc/modprobe.d/radeon-kms.conf exit [/code] Note that this doesn't totally fix the issue. Also, on Natty, it causes the system to fall back to software rendering, thus preventing compositing. Freedesktop.org has marked the bug as 'Fixed', although at present Launchpad doesn't reflect this, and the code still needs to be compiled by someone and tested. A new bugreport will need to be opened on freedesktop.org if it doesn't work. If you are having the same (or more) problems with lucid, this is probably a dupe of bug #556782 -- The graphics striping around moving windows, etc are graphics memory corruptions or bad addresses in memory. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 779163] [NEW] Random Xserver Crashes while playing Video
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-intel have been getting some random X crashes on my laptop. everything this happens. The system freezes for some seconds then am thrown into a black console. I can switch to console (tty1) but even when I try to restart kdm from there. all I see is a black screen even though the command tells me kdm is suppose to be running. although the issue is pretty random and hard to reproduce I do notice that it happens more when my system is under load. every time I have experienced it I am either watching a video via vlc or on a skype video call. when this happens the only way to recover is to do a reboot. after which I might not experience it again for days. I have attached an xorg log which I saved just before rebooting ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 11.04 Package: xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.14.0-4ubuntu7.1 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 2.6.38-8.42-generic-pae 2.6.38.2 Uname: Linux 2.6.38-8-generic-pae i686 NonfreeKernelModules: wl Architecture: i386 CompizPlugins: No value set for `/apps/compiz-1/general/screen0/options/active_plugins' CompositorRunning: kwin DRM.card0.DP.1: status: disconnected enabled: disabled dpms: Off modes: edid-base64: DRM.card0.HDMI.A.1: status: disconnected enabled: disabled dpms: Off modes: edid-base64: DRM.card0.LVDS.1: status: connected enabled: enabled dpms: On modes: 1366x768 edid-base64: AP///wAw5FICAAATAQOAHxF4CmsVl1lWjCgeUFQBAQEBAQEBAQEBAQEBAQEBEhtWeFAADjAgIDUANq4QAAAZ/gBMRyBEaXNwbGF5CiAg/gBMUDE0MFdIMS1UTEQzAOo= DRM.card0.VGA.1: status: disconnected enabled: disabled dpms: Off modes: edid-base64: Date: Sat May 7 19:34:26 2011 DistUpgraded: Fresh install DistroCodename: natty DistroVariant: kubuntu DkmsStatus: bcmwl, 5.100.82.38+bdcom, 2.6.38-8-generic-pae, i686: installed vboxhost, 4.0.6, 2.6.38-8-generic-pae, i686: installed GraphicsCard: Intel Corporation Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:0046] (rev 02) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller]) Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company Device [103c:1423] InstallationMedia: Kubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal - Release i386 (20110427) MachineType: Hewlett-Packard HP ProBook 4420s ProcEnviron: LANGUAGE=en_GB LANG=en_GB.UTF-8 LC_MESSAGES=en_GB.UTF-8 SHELL=/bin/bash ProcKernelCmdLine: BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.38-8-generic-pae root=UUID=4a934f0a-a1fc-4d83-bd38-6499005b6a6a ro quiet splash vt.handoff=7 Renderer: Unknown SourcePackage: xserver-xorg-video-intel UpgradeStatus: No upgrade log present (probably fresh install) dmi.bios.date: 06/10/2010 dmi.bios.vendor: Hewlett-Packard dmi.bios.version: 68AHH Ver. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 779164] [NEW] dual display does not work under natty narwhal
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg with Maverick Meerkat (10.10) dual display works perfectly. The laptop and large panel monitors have independent resolution. Using Natty Narwhal (11.04) I cannot get this configuration to work. When I do plug in the second monitor I do see windows on both screens, but the windows spill over the edges into nowhere land. Drag and click mouse commands mostly do not work at all. I really like this new release, but I may have to return to 10.10 if this problem is not resolved soon. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 778083] [NEW] Switching workspaces does not always redraw everything necessary
You have been subscribed to a public bug: This bug may be related to metacity, but I am uncertain of that. Since I upgraded to Natty, I've been having a problem when logging in with the Gnome desktop (the Unity desktop is not available for me because my graphics card has no available 3D driver). I've defined eight workspaces, arranged in a 4x2 fashion. When I switch workspaces, using CTRL-ALT-{left,right,up,down}-arrow, sometimes something (I suspect metacity) does not redraw everything that needs to be drawn. Especially window borders belonging to windows that are located on the previous workspace are sometimes left over on the new workspace, but only on top of windows located there, not on the background. This is, however, not always the case, and I cannot seem to figure out when it does and does not happen. If I trigger a complete screen redraw, for example from a terminal by triggering the visual bell, then everything is restored to how it is supposed to look. I've attached four images: one of the workspace at (1,2) (on which I'm filling in this bug report), one of the Gnome Terminal at (2,2) and one of the Gnome Terminal at (1,2). When I'm viewing workspace (1,2), then switch to (2,2) using CTRL-ALT-down-arrow, wait a second (keep on pressing CTRL and ALT) and then switch to (1,2) using CTRL-ALT-left- arrow, then I get (part of) the borders of the Gnome Terminal on (2,2) drawn onto the Gnome Terminal at (1,2). As stated, I'm not sure which package is responsible (for all I know, perhaps the graphics driver is buggy and does not draw everything that it's told to, although I don't have any other drawing problems). ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 11.04 Package: metacity 1:2.30.3-0ubuntu8 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 2.6.38-8.42-generic 2.6.38.2 Uname: Linux 2.6.38-8-generic i686 Architecture: i386 Date: Thu May 5 21:21:53 2011 ProcEnviron: LANGUAGE=en_US:en PATH=(custom, user) LANG=en_US.UTF-8 SHELL=/bin/zsh SourcePackage: metacity UpgradeStatus: Upgraded to natty on 2011-04-16 (18 days ago) ** Affects: xorg-server (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: apport-bug i386 natty -- Switching workspaces does not always redraw everything necessary https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/778083 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg-server in Ubuntu. ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
