[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 783825] [NEW] window's title bar disappears
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg window has no title bar. I can not move or resize the window. Visual Effects is None (By default, I choose Normal, but it changed to None by itself). If I choose Normal again, the title bar appears, but next time I boot my laptop, the problem comes back. I add metacity and compiz to the startup application list, and it solves the problem, but a more serious problem comes that a process with no name but a big pid (1 or 2) runs, then it terminates immediately and a new process (still no name) with a bigger pid runs. It looks like a endless loop, and my CPU gets hot, the display slows down. I know my laptop is an old one with legacy hardware, but Ubuntu 9.10 works fine on it, the display is good, and wireless netcard works fine. Now 10.04 does not support them any more. :-( ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 10.04 Package: xorg 1:7.5+5ubuntu1 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 2.6.32-25.45-generic 2.6.32.21+drm33.7 Uname: Linux 2.6.32-25-generic x86_64 Architecture: amd64 Date: Tue May 17 13:59:00 2011 DkmsStatus: Error: [Errno 2] No such file or directory InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Lucid Lynx - Release amd64 (20100429) MachineType: Hewlett-Packard HP Compaq 6515b (KS256PA#AB2) PccardctlIdent: Socket 0: no product info available PccardctlStatus: Socket 0: no card ProcCmdLine: BOOT_IMAGE=/vmlinuz-2.6.32-25-generic root=UUID=041956dd-d8d5-4745-bfc8-0225d12c1410 ro quiet splash ProcEnviron: PATH=(custom, user) LANG=en_US.utf8 SHELL=/bin/bash SourcePackage: xorg Symptom: display dmi.bios.date: 03/04/2008 dmi.bios.vendor: Hewlett-Packard dmi.bios.version: 68YTT Ver. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 446717] Re: [gm45] Adjusting Brightness in Acer Aspire Timelines causes system freeze in 4810T and 5810T models
Experiencing this issue with Natty 11.04 on a 5810T. I erroneously created another bug report for this issue at this URL https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/783262 Here's the description as my comment here. Feel free to remove the other bug, if this is the proper place. This issue happens nearly every time I press the Function key in conjunction with the left or right arrows. I often intend to press Ctrl + Arrows to move the cursor, but the Function key is adjacent to Ctrl. What happens, the following symptoms are observed. The desktop is preserved as it was at the time of the crash. The system time never advances nor does any other visual indicator update (such as network disconnect, media insert, etc). I can move the mouse about the screen, but the pointer does not change based upon the context and no clicks are registered. No keystrokes are registered. I cannot press Special (Window) + F2 or Special + Escape to bring up any system menus. I have needed to restart the computer to correct this. (I can test again with less drastic steps if anyone wishes to make recommendations.) (I believe the issue is with xorg-server, not various gnome processes.) I am using an Acer Aspire Timeline 5810T, a laptop. Here is a interesting series of steps that will reproduce this issue every time: Boot the computer. At the GDM login screen, prior to logging in... Press Function + Left Arrow and Function + Right Arrow a couple of times. Notice that there is a screen overlay that shows the brightness level in the upper right corner (LCD brightness is mapped to my FN + Arrows) At this point I can still use the mouse and keystrokes are still being registered. Log into the system by selecting a user account and entering a password. You will begin to see the desktop load, accompanied by a login sound. The cursor changes to a waiting icon. At this point, the system ceases to be responsive any further, according to the description provided above. The mouse will still move the wait cursor around the screen. Keystrokes other than Ctrl + Alt + F# are not recognized. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 446717] Re: [gm45] Adjusting Brightness in Acer Aspire Timelines causes system freeze in 4810T and 5810T models
When I examined the function key press using logkeys (http://code.google.com/p/logkeys/) I noticed that a single key press of the Function key alone registers two times. E-1d0E-1d0 The documentation for the logkeys logfile format, indicates that 1d0 is the keycode in hexadecimal format. Perhaps this registration of this keypress two times is contributing to the error? Is the patch mentioned by Martin in comment #60 supposed to remove the instability during brightness adjustments? I'm using kernel version 2.6.38-8 and still experiencing the issue. I am not sure where to check in the /sys or /proc filesystem to determine the number of brightness levels that are supposed to be available to the system, or the current setting. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/446717 Title: [gm45] Adjusting Brightness in Acer Aspire Timelines causes system freeze in 4810T and 5810T models ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

After login, the monitor turns black showing only the mouse pointer (the resolution seems right after login judging by the look of the mouse pointer). In some cases, the login screen doesn't show, but the background shows up and is covered with the correct wallpaper in what seems to be the correct resolution. This however, is not very amusing, when the ability to log in is missing. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg-server in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/776978 Title: everything on screen is garbled apart from the top bar (2 monitors, different resolutions, unity, natty) ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 147943] Re: [MASTER] broken initial stacking (was: compiz hides quick loading windows at login)
I'm using Elementary OS which is based on Ubuntu 10.10. I've upgraded compiz to version 0.9.2.1 following an article on Webupd8. After upgrade and restart, top panel keeps disappearing as soon as it starts for the first time. It reappears by clicking the desktop. Also without clicking the desktop, Its tooltips pop up if I move the mouse pointer to the top left corner of the screen. One interesting thing I discovered is that if I disable desktop icons using ubuntu-tweak or gconf-editor, the top panel stops disappearing and starts visible. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 784168] [NEW] Kernel 2.6.38 doesn't boot showing either a black screen or junk
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-ati This has happened immediately after I upgraded to Ubuntu 11.04. Kernel 2.6.38 is not booting and shows junk on the screen. I tried a USB pendrive (USB pendrive works with Ubuntu 10.10) and I get a black screen. After grub has disappeared the system starts booting, and after some seconds I get a screen screwed up. Cannot switch to virtual terminals and cannot connect via ssh. With the USB pendrive more or less the same happens. After I click start, nothing else appears on the screen and the boot procedure stops. The only way I found to get both systems start is to add nomodeset parameter. With this the system starts. The same system starts with kernel 2.6.35 without the nomodeset parameter. Anyway, since I upgraded to Ubuntu 11.04, I'm experiencing some sudden logouts and frequent complete screen freeze when in dual screen. The Ubuntu kernel team suggested to try kernel 2.6.39-020639rc7-generic. This is working correctly it seems. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 771716] Re: middle click emulation not working
I am exasperated with this change. For every release, I have to chase the behavior of my input devices all over the damn file system to restore them to their previous behaviors. I have no xorg.conf right now. I was under the impression that we have been in the process of moving away from using xorg.conf for anything over the last few years. I used to configure input devices through xorg.conf, and it worked well. I don't think it's been the recommended way to configure devices for about two years. Three releases ago, I had to switch to configure scrolling behavior through hal. That changed to udev in the next release. Then in 10.10, I managed to add middle click emulation using a new method that I think involved adding rules to /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/ (but I can't even remember because every time an Ubuntu release comes out I have to learn a new method), and now that has stopped working. This is absurd. Maybe Ubuntu devs could release/contribute code to a configuration utility that actually allows people to set all of the behaviors of the input devices, instead of the random smattering of functionality like Gnome/KDE provide now? So are we actually back to using /etc/X11/xorg.conf, or was that just an antiquated guess? I would stop upgrading, but I usually get lured in by a new feature. I'm open to suggestions for a new distribution, which I'm guessing would not be Debian based. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-input-evdev in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/771716 Title: middle click emulation not working ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 707794] Re: libqt4-opengl on armel should be compiled with OpenGL ES 2.x support
SRU Justification: Impact: Pyside is not available for armel as it's FTBFS. Fix: The problem is fixed by ignoring the GL_H check (gl.h), as checking for QtOpenGL is already enough to enable the QtOpenGL bindings. The fix is a backport from upstream, and as upstream is releasing a new version in 2, 3 weeks from now, this backport is not needed for debian and Oineric. Testcase: With the patch pyside should be available for ARM. ** Patch added: debdiff that fixes the FTBFS for arm https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/qt4-x11/+bug/707794/+attachment/2132978/+files/pyside_1.0.1-1ubuntu0.1.debdiff -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to mesa in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/707794 Title: libqt4-opengl on armel should be compiled with OpenGL ES 2.x support ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 776772] Re: Fatal Error: No screens found in xorg.o.log
Just wanted to add that I'm still getting one crash per boot. With my current usage this means about one crash per day. The crash usually happens on opening a new tab in Firefox, hitting enter in the CLI to execute a command, or opening a file in Netbeans. After this crash, I have to log in again but then the system is completely stable. It's possible that this could also be hardware related (as in, hardware failure). [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 524281] Re: Tens of wakes per second in [kernel scheduler] Load balancing tick on Core 2 Duo even with only 1 core enabled
That script looks useful, thanks for posting it. I've all turned round on the subject. I ran Ubuntu Classic (no effects) and ran powertop with no apps running. It was significantly better than in Ubuntu 10.10. It was actually really good. The red bar in powertop that shows wakeups-from-idle per second, well I found out it is not always red! It was orange for the first time. I'll just avoid using Unity, which givers my processor a hard time anyway. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/524281 Title: Tens of wakes per second in [kernel scheduler] Load balancing tick on Core 2 Duo even with only 1 core enabled ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 660152] Re: [i945g] The computer logged me out without my permission.
Hm. Bugbot's being a bit too enthusiastic. Anyway, we've applied this fix in the 11.04 release. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 524281] Re: Tens of wakes per second in [kernel scheduler] Load balancing tick on Core 2 Duo even with only 1 core enabled
I have a Dell Mini 10v and managed to get good results with Natty (11.04) after some fiddling around. It's better than any other version I had till now (I have been following this bug since its beginning!). Without wireless I get 20ms C3 state, and with wireless one around 3ms C3 state (with no applications running, and not touching the keyboard or touchpad). The machine doesn't get hot (the mini 10v is fanless, high temperature is easy to detect). -I have disabled Unity, although I dont think Unity itself is the cause of wakeups -Compiz generates a lot of wakeups on the GPU, so I removed all the features that I dont use and kept only the ones I use -Installed the latest intel GPU driver from ppa (the Mini 10v has the i915) -Disabled the SD-Card reader (using 'rmmod usb_storage') which was generating extra wakeups (I re-enable it when I want to insert a card). Even though the situation is better now, I'm sure there is many other things that can be improved in the kernel to reduce the wakeup further, say to get 30ms C3 when the wireless is on, or to reduce the wakeups when the touchpad is used.
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 778758] Re: The apport hook discourages new bug reports
** Description changed: - Binary package hint: xorg + [Impact] + Message for the apport hook causes some confusion for X and compiz bug reporters that are trying to report bugs post-release. - When I use ubuntu-bug to report bugs on xorg-related packages (unity, - compiz, xorg), I'm presented with this question: + [Development Fix] + The same change was applied to the ubuntu xorg git tree and will be uploaded shortly. + + [Stable Fix] + The user is presented with a choice of three 'yes' options: One to flag regressions, one to flag bugs with patches, and one for everything else. For the last option we simplify the wording to just say 'Yes'. Ideally we'd like people to exhaust technical support options before filing bug reports, but recommending they do so is causing confusion. + + [Test Case] + Running 'ubuntu-bug xorg' on natty will show the dialog. + + [Regression Potential] + The worst thing that can happen from this change would be that the xorg apport hook no longer works for attaching info to bug reports. + + [Original Report] + When I use ubuntu-bug to report bugs on xorg-related packages (unity, compiz, xorg), I'm presented with this question: Development is completed for the 'natty' version of Ubuntu, so you should use technical support channels unless you know for certain it should be reported here? If I found a bug that I want to report, the only applicable yes option is Yes, The problem began after doing a system software update. This implies that the developers are interested in regressions, but not new bugs. More information on the askubuntu question here: http://askubuntu.com/questions/39358/why-does-ubuntu-bug-imply-that-i -shouldnt-report-bugs-for-compiz-and-unity Brian Murray said it's due to xorg's apport hook and I was asked to report this bug. - It's frustrating as a user to run ubuntu-bug to report a bug, then be told to go to askubuntu, then be told there that it's a bug and you should report it. However, I also want developers to spend their available time fixing real bugs. Perhaps if the hook added a tech-supported tag to bugs that had already gone through tech support so that those bugs can rise to the top? Or if you could import an AskUbuntu question into a bug report so it feels like asking on AskUbuntu is an important step in the bug reporting process. (Yes, copy-paste does most of that, but I think psychologically it's very different.) [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 781402] Re: Ubuntu 11.04 / Unity freezing when screen is 'woken up'
I'm dealing with the same problem, it's really annoying, I dont remember that happening in previous versions. At first I thought it was something to do with screensaver. But I disabled it and still got the same problem. Mine is an Intel Core 2 Duo E7500 2,93GHz. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 550592] Re: Two external monitors preferences lost when restarting
Perhaps this can be fixed by changing the properties of the Nvidia configuration tool to add the sudo command. Try this: Go to systempreferencesmain menu and search for the Nvidia settings under Administration (or preferences, as apparently there's one there too now). Go to properties after selecting this, and change the command to gksudo /usr/bin/nvidia-settings. This will give you a prompt to enter the root password so that you can modify Xorg.conf. Otherwise, nvidia-settings will not have permission to alter the file (unless you are logged in as root.
