Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 782143] Re: touch pad mouse is standard locked right after login
Dear Tom, thanks for this, I will try it soon. Do you understand how all these different 'levels' of controlling the mouse work? I had already tried similar tricks using the 'synclient' commandline command, but that did not resolve the problem. Now you say that there's 'gpointing-device-settings' (which is gnome related, I guess) and 'xinput', which is at the 'x11' level. This used to be soo much more transparent in the old linux days ;o) indium On 07/06/11 19:28, Tom Nicholls wrote: You can get to the Pointing Devices config programme without a mouse by using the command gpointing-device-settings. I have a related, but apparently separate issue (bug #783641) as hitting the disable touchpad button twice won't restart my pointer. However, it seems that this button issues something like the following to your hardware: #! /bin/sh xinput --set-prop SynPS/2 Synaptics Touchpad Synaptics Off 0 xinput --set-prop SynPS/2 Synaptics Touchpad Synaptics Off 1 As a workaround, resetting the touchpad should be quicker if you dump the code above into a shell script file, substituting SynPS/2 Synaptics Touchpad for whatever the name of your device is (try xinput --list to find out what it's called) Hope that helps, Tom -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-input-synaptics in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/782143 Title: touch pad mouse is standard locked right after login ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 785047] Re: Xorg crash
Hi Bryce.. Thank you very much for your attention. This bug is not reproducible after a reinstallation of ubuntu OS. I reinstalled ubuntu on my laptop and didn't upgrade to the newer version of XORG ( the previous xorg update rendered my machine almost useless ). I did reinstall Xorg after i received your mail, but I am not able to reproduce this bug. My system seems to run smoothly. All QT applications that i tested - skype and clementine are running fine. The file manager has no problems as well. I will test the system further, but i feel this bug report can be deleted. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 774978] Re: xserver crashes in RecordAReply when XRecord is enabled in syndaemon
I root-caused this bug to figure out what exactly went wrong here, also to help understand the ramifications of dropping xrecord. Back in October last year, bug #598834 was filed in Debian[1] requesting that libxtst-dev be added as a dependency to xserver-xorg-input- synaptics, to enable syndaemon's -R option to work. The man page documents this option as: Use the XRecord extension for detecting keyboard activity instead of polling the keyboard state. XRecord has kind of a mixed history and I even recall an X.org conference where it was considered to drop it[2] since it's not been too well maintained. Likely it's a bit buggy. But not a big deal; we didn't use -R for syndaemon in Ubuntu, but this would make the functionality available to anyone wishing to opt in to use it for testing or whatever. We didn't even take note of the new option. But then one day, someone noticed that syndaemon was eating precious battery power due to polling and noticed it had this -R option which promised to make it stop doing it. Polling is bad. And so it was that on April 5th, gnome-settings-daemon opted to start calling syndaemon with the -R flag when people have the Disable touchpad while typing option flipped on. Bug #754470[3] was filed shortly thereafter, on April 8th. It seemed that people were suddenly seeing syndaemon consuming 100% CPU either right after boot or some various point during use. Gah! Us X guys got a spate of these reports around this time, which was quite troubling because it was so near to release and (as far as we knew) we hadn't made any changes to X that would have caused this! Chase Douglas was quite a hero and jumped right on the problem. He had been doing a lot of X development work for touch devices which had involved a number of uploads to -synaptics, and so he was both familiar with the code and perhaps worried his changes might have caused the problem people were seeing. He figured out that XRecord wasn't able to process all the different types of events that it was experiencing, and so would leave some events on the stack and get stuck in a loop trying to reprocess them. He added a patch that would work around this problem by just draining those unrecognized events. The CPU issue was solved. But everyone knew this was just papering over whatever the underlying problem was. His fix was uploaded 04-16. Bug #771655[4] was filed on 4/26 suggesting a regression occurred starting around apr 20th. This bug #774978[5] was filed on 5/1. Quickly we started seeing a deluge of dupe bug reports about this X crash. (Check it: dozens of dupes and 37 affected; plus 28 on #760695, 15 on #776654, 22 on #780358, and 80! on #778490.) On 5/23 Sarvatt figured out that disabling record made the problem go away. I'd really like to know how he had this brainstorm, and wish we'd pumped the fix out sooner after that point. Sarvatt kicks ass, we need to listen to him better. Anyway, subsequent testers on this bug confirm his findings, and here we are now today. 1: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=598834 2: http://xorg.freedesktop.org/wiki/Events/XDC2008/Notes 3: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-input-synaptics/+bug/754470 4: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-video-intel/+bug/771655 5: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-input-synaptics/+bug/774978 ** Bug watch added: Debian Bug tracker #598834 http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=598834 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-input-synaptics in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/774978 Title: xserver crashes in RecordAReply when XRecord is enabled in syndaemon ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 774978] Re: xserver crashes in RecordAReply when XRecord is enabled in syndaemon
** Description changed: [Impact] Fairly widespread X crash that occurs seemingly randomly to users, but is actually triggered when a client application makes a call that results in a syndaemon call in the Xrecord module that fails. [Development Fix] Disable linking to the X record module in the synaptics package. See Robert Hooker's debdiff. [Stable Fix] Same fix as for development. [Regression Potential] - + XRecord was not enabled in maverick, so disabling it is not a regression from that version. It was enabled in natty to permit avoiding polling of the keyboard which presumably might save battery power usage; however it was found to cause widespread bugs shortly after introducing it - see comment #38 for historical discussion. [Original Report] Xserver crashed (landed me back at the gdm login); it happened just after I'd opened a page in firefox - nothing too special, it had some flash in but nothing too unusual and the page reopened fine now. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 760632] Re: Resizing Konsole crashes the whole system
I was excited to finally get working KDE, with transparent terminals and with OpenGL, when I read about the new NVIDIA Beta drivers (275.09). Alas, it does not work for me. I installed the driver from: http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux-display-amd64-275.09-driver.html Installation already was painful: I had to uninstall the distribution packages (nvidia-current) first, and to blacklist the open source driver's kernel module nouveau. It felt like it took a few seconds longer before X crashed, when I resized my konsole, but it still just took seconds. This is a GeForce 9400M, by the way. So I decided I'd rather have no 3D than having to continue using Gnome, but uninstalling nvidia, and reactivating nouveau also was a bit tricky. # ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-275.09.run --uninstall Now first KDE did not start any more, because some file was missing (as kwin reported when trying to start it from gnome). The following fixed it for me: # aptitude reinstall libgl1-mesa-glx @alvin: you are right, there are a lot of useless comments in this bug tracker. But I don't agree with your You should rather blame the 'fixed release date' policy. (instead of NVIDIA) - in the end the NVIDIA driver is not really part of the distribution at all. It even works well with Ubuntu's default desktops (I used it with Gnome for several weeks without problems), so throwing it out of the software center just because of the KDE issue would have been a bit harsh... maybe a conflicts in the konsole package would have been useful? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to nvidia-graphics-drivers in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/760632 Title: Resizing Konsole crashes the whole system ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 760632] Re: Resizing Konsole crashes the whole system
I agree. 'Conflicts konsole' would have been great. That should be an easy patch. The driver is in the restricted section, but available in a default installation. You don't have to enable any extra repositories for it. Other distro's would probably have different policies regarding restricted software by default. Given the nature of the bug a warning in the release notes would have been nice. Kubuntu shouldn't be hit by unstable software because the same package is working fine on Ubuntu (is it really?) It just feels like Kubuntu is being treated as the ugly step-child again, where (in my personal opinion) it has more potential. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to nvidia-graphics-drivers in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/760632 Title: Resizing Konsole crashes the whole system ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 607399] Re: Loading the nvidia driver causes kernel oops in maverick, natty
Axel wrote : Then I realized that I had gold as the default linker. Before carrying out the next kernel update I put the bsd ld back as default (simple symlink rewiring), ran the update - now the nvidia modules were linked using bsd ld -, bravely rebooted into the new kernel and was greeted by a friendly gdm! Can anyone confirm? YES! You cracked it! I can confirm that the problem seems to be related to the gold linker. Since the Maverick upgrade I had kernel oops every single time XOrg tried to start. The nvidia moduleee loadeds fine, it seems to be only when the X server loads does the OOPS occiur. Following from what you said, I changed the ld soft link to /usr/bin/ld.bfd , reinstalled the nVidia driver, and hey presto it works! [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 791596] Re: Odd Pointer Behavior After Recent Xserver SRU in Natty
Ok, based on this latest information I'm going to mark this bug as invalid because the patch added as part of the SRU should be making things more correct, and the difference appears to be handled appropriately by modifying the acceleration scheme parameters. I will also note that the acceleration and sensitivity is greatly affected by the precision of the mouse, and that the X input handling is not automatically scaled to take this into account. For example, the default acceleration and sensitivity is too high on a high precision mouse like the Apple Magic Mouse, while it is perfectly reasonable for other mice. Please feel free to reopen the bug report if you believe this is not the appropriate outcome. Thanks all! ** Changed in: xorg-server (Ubuntu Oneiric) Status: Incomplete = Invalid ** Changed in: xorg-server (Ubuntu Natty) Status: Confirmed = Invalid -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg-server in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/791596 Title: Odd Pointer Behavior After Recent Xserver SRU in Natty ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
