I'll try that. But isn't v2.6.39-oneiric a newer kernel than the -rc
ones?

Re: [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 782143] Re: touch pad mouse is standard locked right after login

2011-06-08 Thread indium
Dear Tom,

thanks for this, I will try it soon. Do you understand how all these
different 'levels' of controlling the mouse work? I had already tried
similar tricks using the 'synclient' commandline command, but that did
not resolve the problem. Now you say that there's
'gpointing-device-settings' (which is gnome related, I guess) and
'xinput', which is at the 'x11' level. This used to be soo much more
transparent in the old linux days ;o)

indium

On 07/06/11 19:28, Tom Nicholls wrote:

I have a related, but apparently separate issue (bug #783641) as hitting
the disable touchpad button twice won't restart my pointer. However, it
seems that this button issues something like the following to your
 hardware:

 #! /bin/sh
xinput --set-prop SynPS/2 Synaptics Touchpad Synaptics Off 0
xinput --set-prop SynPS/2 Synaptics Touchpad Synaptics Off 1

As a workaround, resetting the touchpad should be quicker if you dump
the code above into a shell script file, substituting SynPS/2 Synaptics
Touchpad for whatever the name of your device is (try xinput --list to
 find out what it's called)

 Hope that helps,
 Tom

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 785047] Re: Xorg crash

2011-06-08 Thread Peter Christopher
Hi Bryce..

Thank you very much for your attention.

This bug is not reproducible after a reinstallation of ubuntu OS.

I reinstalled ubuntu on my laptop and didn't upgrade to the newer version of
XORG ( the previous xorg update rendered my machine almost useless ). I did
reinstall Xorg after i received your mail, but I am not able to reproduce this
bug. My system seems to run smoothly. All QT applications that i tested - skype
and clementine are running fine. The file manager has no problems as well.

I will test the system further, but i feel this bug report can be
deleted.

Thank you

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 774978] Re: xserver crashes in RecordAReply when XRecord is enabled in syndaemon

2011-06-08 Thread Bryce Harrington
I root-caused this bug to figure out what exactly went wrong here, also
to help understand the ramifications of dropping xrecord.

Back in October last year, bug #598834 was filed in Debian[1] requesting
that libxtst-dev be added as a dependency to xserver-xorg-input-
synaptics, to enable syndaemon's -R option to work. The man page
documents this option as:

Use the XRecord extension for detecting keyboard activity instead of
polling the keyboard state.

XRecord has kind of a mixed history and I even recall an X.org
conference where it was considered to drop it[2] since it's not been too
well maintained. Likely it's a bit buggy. But not a big deal; we
didn't use -R for syndaemon in Ubuntu, but this would make the
functionality available to anyone wishing to opt in to use it for
testing or whatever. We didn't even take note of the new option.

But then one day, someone noticed that syndaemon was eating precious
battery power due to polling and noticed it had this -R option which
promised to make it stop doing it. Polling is bad. And so it was that
on April 5th, gnome-settings-daemon opted to start calling syndaemon
with the -R flag when people have the Disable touchpad while typing
option flipped on.

Bug #754470[3] was filed shortly thereafter, on April 8th. It seemed
that people were suddenly seeing syndaemon consuming 100% CPU either
right after boot or some various point during use. Gah! Us X guys got
a spate of these reports around this time, which was quite troubling
because it was so near to release and (as far as we knew) we hadn't made
any changes to X that would have caused this!

Chase Douglas was quite a hero and jumped right on the problem. He had
been doing a lot of X development work for touch devices which had
involved a number of uploads to -synaptics, and so he was both familiar
with the code and perhaps worried his changes might have caused the
problem people were seeing. He figured out that XRecord wasn't able to
process all the different types of events that it was experiencing, and
so would leave some events on the stack and get stuck in a loop trying
to reprocess them. He added a patch that would work around this problem
by just draining those unrecognized events. The CPU issue was solved.
But everyone knew this was just papering over whatever the underlying
problem was. His fix was uploaded 04-16.

Bug #771655[4] was filed on 4/26 suggesting a regression occurred
starting around apr 20th. This bug #774978[5] was filed on 5/1.
Quickly we started seeing a deluge of dupe bug reports about this X
crash. (Check it: dozens of dupes and 37 affected; plus 28 on #760695,
15 on #776654, 22 on #780358, and 80! on #778490.)

On 5/23 Sarvatt figured out that disabling record made the problem go
away. I'd really like to know how he had this brainstorm, and wish we'd
pumped the fix out sooner after that point. Sarvatt kicks ass, we need
to listen to him better. Anyway, subsequent testers on this bug confirm
his findings, and here we are now today.

2011-06-08 Thread Bryce Harrington
** Description changed:

  [Impact]
Fairly widespread X crash that occurs seemingly randomly to users, but is

syndaemon call in the Xrecord module that fails.

  [Development Fix]
Disable linking to the X record module in the synaptics package. See Robert
Hooker's debdiff.

  [Stable Fix]
  Same fix as for development.

  [Regression Potential]
-
+ XRecord was not enabled in maverick, so disabling it is not a regression from
that version. It was enabled in natty to permit avoiding polling of the
keyboard which presumably might save battery power usage; however it was found
to cause widespread bugs shortly after introducing it - see comment #38 for
historical discussion.

  [Original Report]
Xserver crashed (landed me back at the gdm login); it happened just after I'd
opened a page in firefox - nothing too special, it had some flash in but
nothing too unusual and the page reopened fine now.

Thanks Bryce for this wonderful explanation. I was wondering what the

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 758609] [NEW] natty beta Ubuntu Classic (No effects) SDL|openGL window always on top

2011-06-08 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

Release info: Description: Ubuntu Natty (development branch) Release: 11.04
libsdl1.2-dev version 1.2.14-6.1ubuntu3
libsdl1.2-debian version 1.2.14-6.1ubuntu3
libgl1-mesa-dev version 7.10.2-0ubuntu1
libgl1-mesa-dri version 7.10.2-0ubuntu1
libgl1-mesa-glx version 7.10.2-0ubuntu1

If I compile a SDL and openGL program and run it with Ubuntu Classic (No
effects) the SDL|openGL window is overlaid on top of all other windows.

When it is the active window mouse/keypresses go to the SDL|openGL program as
expected.
When another window is active mouse/keypresses go to the correct window even
though the SDL window is on top.

Tested with Eternal Lands client and demo SDLGears.

Correct response from SDL|openGL should be the overlay window goes back
into the Z buffer when another app has focus.

2 SDL|openGL windows will battle for top z level when they are both
running.

I tried your method (disabling record module in xorg.conf) but all I got was

loaded elsewhere.
...
[ 1394.228] (II) record will be loaded even though the default is to disable

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 760632] Re: Resizing Konsole crashes the whole system

2011-06-08 Thread Vlado Plaga
I was excited to finally get working KDE, with transparent terminals and
with OpenGL, when I read about the new NVIDIA Beta drivers (275.09).
Alas, it does not work for me. I installed the driver from:

http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux-display-amd64-275.09-driver.html

Installation already was painful: I had to uninstall the distribution
packages (nvidia-current) first, and to blacklist the open source
driver's kernel module nouveau. It felt like it took a few seconds
longer before X crashed, when I resized my konsole, but it still just
took seconds. This is a GeForce 9400M, by the way.

So I decided I'd rather have no 3D than having to continue using Gnome,
but uninstalling nvidia, and reactivating nouveau also was a bit tricky.

# ./NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-275.09.run --uninstall

Now first KDE did not start any more, because some file was missing (as
kwin reported when trying to start it from gnome). The following fixed
it for me:

# aptitude reinstall libgl1-mesa-glx

@alvin: you are right, there are a lot of useless comments in this bug
tracker. But I don't agree with your You should rather blame the 'fixed
release date' policy. (instead of NVIDIA) - in the end the NVIDIA
driver is not really part of the distribution at all. It even works well
with Ubuntu's default desktops (I used it with Gnome for several weeks
without problems), so throwing it out of the software center just
because of the KDE issue would have been a bit harsh... maybe a
conflicts in the konsole package would have been useful?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 760632] Re: Resizing Konsole crashes the whole system

2011-06-08 Thread Alvin
I agree. 'Conflicts konsole' would have been great. That should be an
easy patch. The driver is in the restricted section, but available in a
default installation. You don't have to enable any extra repositories
for it. Other distro's would probably have different policies regarding
restricted software by default. Given the nature of the bug a warning in
the release notes would have been nice. Kubuntu shouldn't be hit by
unstable software because the same package is working fine on Ubuntu (is
it really?) It just feels like Kubuntu is being treated as the ugly
step-child again, where (in my personal opinion) it has more potential.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 673977] Re: xscreensaver crashed (display and keyboard dead) on nouveau assertion

2011-06-08 Thread Wookey
here's files just after another hang

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: xserver-xorg-video-nouveau

I got back to my machine in the morning to find that the display showed a
slightly corrupted opengl screensaver image with the following text at the top
of the screen:
  gltext:../../nouveau/nouveau_pushbuf.c:273: nouveau_pushbuf_flush: Assertion
`!nouveau_pushbuf_space(chan,min)' failed.
xscreensaver: 19:48:14: 0: child pid 5290 (gltext) terminated with signal 6.

The keyboard is dead in a 'scroll lock/numlock don't change the LEDs' sort of
way.
I can still ssh into the machine and X is still running (using 66% CPU) along
with all my other apps and processes.
xscreensaver master process is still running too. It does not respond to
DISPLAY=:0 xscreensaver-command -deactivate
  (or -version)
stracing the command shows:(snipping a load of startup file checking):
  ...
  socket(PF_FILE, SOCK_STREAM|SOCK_CLOEXEC, 0) = 3
  connect(3, {sa_family=AF_FILE, path=@/tmp/.X11-unix/X0}, 20) = 0
  getpeername(3, {sa_family=AF_FILE, path=@/tmp/.X11-unix/X0}, [20]) = 0

  read(3, 0x1440590, 8) = -1 EAGAIN (Resource temporarily
unavailable)
  poll([{fd=3, events=POLLIN}], 1, -1 unfinished ...

Which seems to shwo that the X socket simply isn't responding, so the
server is dead to useful activity.

hupping the X process doesn't help. restarting gdm (and thus X) makes
the display fill with random stuff (lots of little tiles of X stuff) but
the keyboard is still dead. Only rebooting the machine gets you back to
  a useful state.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 607399] Re: Loading the nvidia driver causes kernel oops in maverick, natty

2011-06-08 Thread Kevin Cave
Axel wrote :

Then I realized that I had gold as the default linker. Before
carrying out the next kernel update I put the bsd ld back as default
(simple symlink rewiring), ran the update - now the nvidia modules were
linked using bsd ld -, bravely rebooted into the new kernel and was
greeted by a friendly gdm!

Can anyone confirm?

YES! You cracked it! I can confirm that the problem seems to be related
to the gold linker. Since the Maverick upgrade I had kernel oops every
single time XOrg tried to start. The nvidia moduleee loadeds fine, it
seems to be only when the X server loads does the OOPS occiur.

Following from what you said, I changed the ld soft link to
/usr/bin/ld.bfd , reinstalled the nVidia driver, and hey presto it
works!

Now, the question has to be... what is the gold linker doing to the
nVidia source that ld.bfd is not?

New Ubuntu user here so bare with me.

Basically I received the latest upgrades from Ubuntu's Update Manager.

'mouse over them'.

Ok. I couldn't find a core dump, but I've enabled apport and will wait

I have same issue behavior like others but not indentical, I can't trace
nothing unnusual on my system, There is many people on net who reports
this bug with slighty different circumstances. Somehow reverting v86d
to older version fixes it for me, So it may be possible that there is
something wrong with frambuffer control. On my Arch System this Fix work
for 2 day without randomly loging out

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 760632] Re: Resizing Konsole crashes the whole system

2011-06-08 Thread Adys
@Vlado
That's 275.09. You should read more carefully -- it was fixed in 275.09.04.
That version is not available through the nvidia drivers website.

Be aware that ubuntu has a broken glx installation, so do not be
surprised when you install the official nvidia drivers that just
uninstalling them doesn't work.

2011-06-08 Thread Vlado Plaga
Well, 275.09.04 IS 275.09, just like Linux 2.6.39 is Linux 2.6, isn't
it? I couldn't find that third digit anywhere in my logs, so I assumed
it was correct... and I don't like using Google. Here is what I got,
when I did it nevertheless:

ftp://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86_64/275.09.04/

Google also found this, ready-made .debs from a PPA:

Felix thank you for your help, but unchecking
/apps/metacity/general/capture_before_unmap in gconf-editor didn't solve
the issue, at least not for me :(

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 794622] Re: package fglrx 2:8.723.1-0ubuntu5 failed to install/upgrade: fglrx kernel module failed to build

2011-06-08 Thread Daniel Manrique
Hello,

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better.

From the installation log for the fglrk module I see this:

DKMS make.log for fglrx-8.723.1 for kernel 2.6.38-10-generic (x86_64)
mer 8 giu 2011, 17.18.14, CEST
AMD kernel module generator version 2.1
cat: /lib/modules/2.6.38-10-generic/build/include/linux/utsrelease.h: File o
directory non esistente

It looks like the kernel headers required for building the fgrlx module
are not present.

Could you please try running this command in a terminal (press ctrl-
alt-t to open a terminal):

sudo apt-get install linux-headers-2.6.38-10-generic

Once this has installed, try reinstalling fglrx, it should build
correctly this time.

Please let me know whether this helps with your problem.

Thanks!

There is zero information in this bug report. I don't know what ath_pci
is. I don't think it is related to fglrx.

You'd find more help in a support forum. I doubt this report is
appropriate for a bug tracker.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 791596] Re: Odd Pointer Behavior After Recent Xserver SRU in Natty

2011-06-08 Thread Chase Douglas
Ok, based on this latest information I'm going to mark this bug as
invalid because the patch added as part of the SRU should be making
things more correct, and the difference appears to be handled
appropriately by modifying the acceleration scheme parameters.

I will also note that the acceleration and sensitivity is greatly
affected by the precision of the mouse, and that the X input handling is
not automatically scaled to take this into account. For example, the
default acceleration and sensitivity is too high on a high precision
mouse like the Apple Magic Mouse, while it is perfectly reasonable for
other mice.

Please feel free to reopen the bug report if you believe this is not the
appropriate outcome.

Thanks all!

Fglrx version 8.780 doesn't support kernel version 2.6.38. You need at
least an 8.84-based version of fglrx.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 794474] [NEW] latitude e6420 screen flickering (sandy bridge intel video card)

2011-06-08 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

I just installed latest 11.04 release on my brand new dell e6420
latitude laptop and the screen flickers.

I don't know if it comes from kernel, driver or xserver.

It's a 1600x900 screen, I only have on board video card (sandy bridge
arch).

Note: I installed ppa:xorg-edgers/ppa packages, while the flickering was
reduced it's still present:
sudo apt-add-repository ppa:xorg-edgers/ppa
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 794622] Re: package fglrx 2:8.723.1-0ubuntu5 failed to install/upgrade: fglrx kernel module failed to build

2011-06-08 Thread Daniel Manrique
Hello,

Here is one more thing to try: try uninstalling fglrx, from the terminal
type:

sudo apt-get remove fglrx

then reboot, and try installing again using the additional drivers tool.

If it fails or you get an error message, please attach the
/var/log/jockey.log file so I can see what the error was.

Thanks!

Please excuse my lack of experience with Ubuntu I'm a novice and

Fglrx version 8.780 doesn't support kernel version 2.6.38. You need at
least an 8.84-based version of fglrx.

2011-06-08 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

This is a default Natty install. I'm filing these bugs against the laptop due
to the current lack of a Laptop compatibility database for Ubuntu. Also, since
Launchpad appears to not do hierarchies like Bugzilla, I can't link them
together as a set of problems with this model, assuming this was considered
appropriate.
