[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 685727] Re: [arrandale] When i upgraded to 10.10 the screen on my laptop(Gateway nv79) went completely black and I could not see anything unless I held a flashlight to the screen

2011-06-14 Thread Daudi Amani
THIS IS ABSOLUTELY CRAZY TO CLOSE THIS BUG OUT!
IT STILL EXISTS WITHIN UBUNTU 11.04 (NATTY). WE HAVE BEEN WAITING MONTHS
MONTHS MONTHS FOR ANYONE TO COMMENT ON THIS, RESPOND TO US, OR FIX IT.
EVERYTHING WORKED GREAT INITIALLY IN 10.04 UNTIL THE 10.10 UPGRADE. WE'RE NOT
ASKING FOR NEW DEVELOPMENT, JUST FIND THE CODE WHICH DID WORK AND RESTORE THOSE
SETTINGS TO 10.10, 11.04, ETC GOING FORWARD. I CANNOT UPGRADE WITHOUT THIS FIX.

Title:
[arrandale] When i upgraded to 10.10 the screen on my laptop(Gateway
nv79) went completely black and I could not see anything unless I held
a flashlight to the screen to see. The only way I am able to fix this
is issue is by doing a system test. But as soon as my laptop goes to
sleep it goes back to the black screen. I could not find another fix
because once I did the system testing for 10.10 it would not allow me
to do the testing again to fix it.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 761065] Re: [Sandybridge] Spurious "*ERROR* Hangcheck timer elapsed... blt ring idle" messages in dmesg when using compiz

2011-06-14 Thread Bilal Akhtar
I'm using Ubuntu Oneiric with the 3.0 kernel in the repositories and the
entire X stack from the xorg-edgers PPA. I don't get this message
anymore (got it when I was using Natty with the main repository kernel
and Natty X (not from xorg-edgers)) and the display doesn't hang anymore
when typing in the Unity search dialog.

So if X is going to be updated this cycle, then this issue would be
fixed for good in Oneiric. The kernel has already been upgraded to 3.0,
so X is the only thing which needs an upstream upgrade.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 785497] Re: [Arrandale] remnants of window getting left behind when apps quit

2011-06-14 Thread Bryce Harrington
This bit looks interesting:

"""

ring any bells what that could be talking about? Sort of sounds like
there's a custom theme installed that has invalid border dimensions or
something.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 745112] Re: [arrandale] desktop is messed up (goes black) when laptop is docked with two external 1920x1200 monitors (x86_64)

2011-06-14 Thread Zak Kipling
For me (on a Thinkpad x201), it appears that this commit causes the hang
on resume:

drm/i915: Use ACPI OpRegion to determine lid status

I'm using the current Natty kernel (v2.6.38-8.42) plus the drm/i915
changes from the Ubuntu git repo for 2.6.38-9 and -10, plus the patches
in the branch Timo referred to above, EXCEPT for the above patch and
those which don't apply cleanly without it:

drm/i915: Move the lvds OpRegion lid detection code to panel and reuse for eDP
drm/i915/lvds: Always return connected in the absence of better information

Suspend/resume, all combinations of internal panel and external VGA, and Fn+F7
are now all working.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 785497] Re: remnants of window getting left behind when apps quit

2011-06-14 Thread Robert Collins
09:54 < bryce> lifeless, anything else you can provide? bug's non-actionable
right now I'm afraid
09:54 < lifeless> more screenshots ?
09:54 < bryce> sure
09:54 < lifeless> there -may- be a correlation with uxterm
09:55 < lifeless> I haven't been terribly rigorous with my data gathering
09:55 < bryce> I can upstream it... but to be honest most bugs like this that
are just described as "random screen corruption" don't tend to go anywhere
09:55 < lifeless> it -always- seems to be the borders of the windows
09:55 < bryce> ok
09:56 < lifeless> specifically I think its the bit that metacity(?) makes into
a white-black-white bounding box when you hit alt-tab
09:56 < bryce> you could also try describing what happens after. E.g. some of
these bugs you move a window and it redraws. Other times the corruption is
"permanent" or "mostly permanent", or goes away on vt switch
09:57 < lifeless> dropping a window on top of the remnants replaces them and
then its fine for a while
09:57 < bryce> there was one (which I've reproduced) which would correct itself
if metacity was restarted (thinking that one might be a metacity bug... I
can't seem to find it in Launchpad anymore though)

2011-06-14 Thread David Lerouvillois
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: nvidia-settings

Xinerama with Nvidia-settings don't work since Natty.
Before, with Maverick it works perfectly. I've got two screens and I could drag
and drop some windows from the left to the screen of right.
The bug is that when I have activated Xinerama, the default screen was
displayed on the right screen (the second screen) and the interaction of the
mouse should be done on the left screen for do something.
My English is very bad, sorry.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 764195] Re: laptop screen blacklight brightness always at 100% (even on battery), can't be lowered

2011-06-14 Thread laurybueno
Guys, the best thing i could manage until now was install the
¨experimental¨ drivers for nvidia.

When I open the ¨additional drivers¨, he gives me two options, the
proprietary and the open source.

Using the proprietary, I can´t control the backlight (stays at 100%),
but i can use unity. By the way, in this situation, the ¨additional
drivers¨ dialog says the nvidia driver is installed but not ¨currently
in use¨, just like bro described.

Using the open source ¨experimental¨ alternative, the backlight control
works the same way than worked with no special driver installed at all.
In that situation, I can´t use unity, but I can control brightness.

One thing worth saying is that even when I can control the backlight
(with nvidia open source, or with no special driver), this control is
strange. I only have four degrees of light and I can vary among them
with the four lower degrees of the graphic indicator. All the higher
levels are useless.

I´m using the nVidia Corporation GT218 [GeForce 310M] (rev a2) on a Sony
Vaio VPCCW21FX.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 771788] Re: nVidia driver activated and apparently being used but reported as not being used by jockey-gtk

2011-06-14 Thread W R Chisholm
I tried manually installing the proprietary nvidia drivers several weeks
ago using the instructions on the nvidia website for dealing with the
nouveau problem. It did not improve things much and failed several days
later and the only way I could get 3d back up was to reinstall the
proprietary drivers through jockey. The fail makes me suspect that part
of the nouveau weed effect may be driven by system updates to related
parts of the system (apt wanting to uninstall so much along with nouveau
throws even more suspicion here). Is there a detailed log of updates
somewhere on the system that could show a dependency interaction? I
have a bad habit of letting update run on its own without watching
exactly what it is happening at every step along the way as long as the
update notes seem reasonable.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 505494] Re: Mouse events fail frequently and unpredictably, requiring kwin restart

2011-06-14 Thread Kevin BARREAU
Ok so I apology not to test and report it at first, but here is some
important informations :

-My problem triggered when upgrade ubuntu last friday 10 June. Before, I
used Natty KDE for few weeks without any hitch.

-I use my old usb Logitech wire-mouse, G5, when I plug it out the laptop
touchpad runs perfectly. When I plug it in, both (touchpad & mouse)
won't take left clicks.

Of course I tested the mouse on Mac, it works perefectly.

My problem's behaviour is extacly like this one, so I thought it would
be related !

Anyway, I found a way to finally use again my lovely Ubuntu, which I was
missing a lot since.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 760632] Re: Resizing Konsole crashes the whole system

2011-06-14 Thread Ivan D Vasin
i've seen a number of people recommend installing the latest drivers
from ppa:philip5/extra, but i'd like to caution wary users (and eager
newbie users) against doing so by adding the PPA to their apt sources.
doing so may cause a subsequent system-wide upgrade to upgrade more
packages than you bargained for. then, if you later remove the PPA from
your apt sources, apt will not revert those packages to the
corresponding ones from the Ubuntu repos--they'll stay at the PPA's
versions until Ubuntu's versions exceed them. to fully revert the
packages, (as far as i know) you'll need to use something like ppa-purge
.

to cherry-pick the nvidia-graphics package from the PPA, you can grab
the appropriate .deb package directly from the PPA's web site by
following the "View package details" link above the package list. this
is the route i chose to resolve this bug on my systems. this [1] should
be the appropriate .deb for 64-bit systems, and this [2] should be the
one for 32-bit systems.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 480744] Re: Failsafe X stuff shouldn't be stored in /etc/gdm

2011-06-14 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package xorg - 1:7.6+7ubuntu1

---
xorg (1:7.6+7ubuntu1) oneiric; urgency=low

  * Merge from Debian unstable, remaining changes:
- Add apport hook
- Demote xfonts-{75DPI,100DPI} to Suggests. Demote xfonts-scalable to
  Recommends.
- debian/local/Xsession:
Truncate xsession-errors on startup if too big
- debian/local/Xsession.d/20x11-common_process-args:
Add support for session command containing args.
- debian/local/Xsession.d/60x11-common_localhost:
Authorise all processes running with the user's credentials to connect
  to the server.
- debian/rules, debian/control:
Add dependencies on x11-common, and symlink /usr/share/doc directories
  of all packages to x11-common's.
- debian/scripts/vars.*:
  + Don't drop wacom from input-all.
  + Add -vmmouse to input-all for amd64 and i386.
  + Add -qxl to video-all for amd64 and i386.
  + Add -geode to video-all for i386.
+ Drop video drivers that are likely irrelevant for ARM.
- debian/xserver-xorg.postinst.in: Also migrate users from psb → vesa.

  [ Bryce Harrington ]
  * apport/source_xorg.py:
- Move Failsafe-X out of the xorg package to xdiagnose
  (LP: #480744)
- Simplify answers for bug reporters filing post-release reports.
  (LP: #778758)
- Remove attach_drm_info(). This is useful info but we use it very
infrequently, and it is already available in other log files. But the
call makes bug reports a bit cluttered since it adds a lot of lines to
  the report itself.

it.
  * Rework the x11-common.{postinst,postrm,preinst} failsafe conffile
handling, the previous ones added in 1:7.6+4ubuntu1 were wrong too.
  * scripts/vars.{amd64,i386,powerpc}: Remove apm, ark, chips, i128, i740,
rendition, s3virge, tseng, voodoo from xserver-xorg-video-all
dependencies. They are unmaintained and obsolete.

xorg (1:7.6+7) unstable; urgency=low

  * Remove long obsolete XF86Config-4 on purge (Closes: #610450). Thanks,
Bernhard R. Link!
  * Add support for armhf (Closes: #605841), Thanks, Konstantinos
Margaritis! Keep wacom in Recommends rather than in Depends, though.
  * Set the same permissions on all debian/scripts/vars.* files: no need
to have them +x.
  * Remove debian/scripts/validate-posix-sh, unused.
  * Address description-synopsis-starts-with-article lintian tag.
  * Bump Standards-Version (no changes needed).
  * Merge xsf-docs up to the f920810e8f commit:
- Add: reference/experimental
- Add: reference/git-usage
- Update: faq/general (firmware for ATI)
- and other minor updates.

xorg (1:7.6+6) unstable; urgency=low

  * Merge xsf-docs up to the bd39472b0c commit:
- Conversion from markdown to asciidoc.
  * Tweak the Makefile accordingly to stop trying to build and install PDF
documents, since wkhtmltopdf fails on several architectures. Let's
enable them again later, once bugs are fixed.
  * Adjust build system and build-dependencies accordingly:
- Add asciidoc build-dep.
- Remove markdown build-dep.
- Remove wkhtmltopdf, xauth, xvfb build-dep.
- Stop wrapping make with xvfb-run.
- Get rid of the sparc-specific workaround.

xorg (1:7.6+5) unstable; urgency=low

  * Drop ati and sisusb from video-all on hurd-i386, thanks to Samuel

Sorry for the late reply, I was away on extended weekend.
My "sudo lshw -C display" displays:

  *-display
   description: VGA compatible controller

   vendor: nVidia Corporation
   physical id: 0

   resources: irq:16 memory:fa00-faff memory:e000-efff
memory:f800-f9ff ioport:7c00(size=128) memory:fbfe-fbff

So it appears that the Nvidia driver is loaded and that Jockey displays the
wrong status of the driver.

The confusion shows why it is important that tools like jockey give
reliable information.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 752445] Re: Intermittent white window contents when maximizing/switching windows

2011-06-14 Thread Stephan Trebels
Sadly I have to take this back. I have since stressed the settings more and the
immediate results are not persistent, sadly.
Essentially there are still cases, where emacs does not redraw properly. Pity!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 771788] Re: nVidia driver activated and apparently being used but reported as not being used by jockey-gtk

2011-06-14 Thread James MAsters
Now this is confusing indeed!, I am not really fussed about who is to
blame at this moment. If it is jockey then will it be fixed?

Emilio, the workaround, what were the test conditions? and can this
method be duplicated and work for everyone with a Nvidia driver?

Obviously no-one really wants to cause further issues with their system.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 752445] Re: Intermittent white window contents when maximizing/switching windows

2011-06-14 Thread Stephan Trebels
It became a lot better when I changed two things in ccsm:
1. Disable Extras / Window Previews
2. select "Force synchronization between GL and GLX" in Utility / Workarounds.

There still are screen redraw issues, but - for me - no longer in the window
content, now the task bar is black,
but that may be a compiz reconfigure bug. As long as I can now use all my
emacs windows and resize them,
I'll be willing to wait for a real fix.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 760632] Re: Resizing Konsole crashes the whole system

2011-06-14 Thread Christopher K.
Well, aren't there enough posts above that state which version works? I
recommend reading at least the top and bottom of a bug report to see
what it is about and if there is already a solution for a bug before
posting. If one did this, I doubt it would be possible to miss the
version which works. This does not only help to keep the bug report
clean, but also helps you finding the solution faster.

And nobody reported any problems yet with the experimental version so
chances are rather good that you do not trade one bug for another.

Although I have not tested this myself, I think Julio's tip about nouveau (#88)
does not help all people as there were people that reported problems with
nouveau as well (see #28).
Interesting though that the old 170.x driver seem to work - I think nobody has
tried (at least reported) anything about this version yet.

I think any post below this should either be problem reports about the
experimental version (if any problems occur) or somebody saying "it's
now in the repositories". This means I'd also prefer not getting 100
more messaged saying "275.09.04 fixes it" from everybody this bug
affects.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 760632] Re: Resizing Konsole crashes the whole system

2011-06-14 Thread ArdyFalls
@Vlado
No I had tested it with 270.41.19. I'll re-test with the experimental version.
I hope I'm not trading one bug for another by using an 'experimental version'
of the driver.

Thx, then you can close it. I can't find what was that sw that opened
the window there. I'll see after a restart.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 797062] Re: Can't click with the mouse in a certain area on the screen

2011-06-14 Thread Chris Halse Rogers
What appears to be happening is that some app has put an invisible
(InputOnly) window over the top of your other windows, and then told the
window manager to not touch it (OverrideRedirect).

This would seem to be neither really a bug in X, nor a bug in the window
manager; both are doing what the application is asking. Of course,
since whatever application has put that window there hasn't set any of
the normal hints you could use to work out what process it's from, it'll
be difficult to work out where a bug should be filed!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 760632] Re: Resizing Konsole crashes the whole system

2011-06-14 Thread Vlado Plaga
@ArdyFalls: "from NVIDIA" is not very specific. Are you sure it is the
version 275.09.04? See comment #74 (by me), which includes working
links.

I recommend installing the packages from the PPA, because the Nvidia
installer breaks Ubuntu's packaging system (by deleting/ overwriting
files without removing the packages which contained them).

In case people still doubt that 275.09.04 solves the problem: it also
works perfectly for me. Like Adys I'd also prefer it if people would
stop repeating "275.09.04 works for me", because this is to be expected
after three repetitions and no reports of the contrary.
