[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 803012] Re: Intel driver incorrectly renders some UI elements

2011-07-21 Thread Sitsofe Wheeler
I've unduplicated bug 745608. While it looked like it was a dup, I've
installed xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.14.0-4ubuntu7.2 from natty-
proposed and the glyph corruption described in 745608 is still present.
If you read the upstream bug
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=36326 (and more explicitly
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/attachment.cgi?id=47560 ) , it talks about
the need for a kernel patch to force unfenced buffers to be aligned to
powers of two. Supposedly this is due to hardware tiling bugs on old
chipsets...

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 761065] Re: [Sandybridge] Spurious *ERROR* Hangcheck timer elapsed... blt ring idle messages in dmesg when using compiz

2011-07-21 Thread Felix Engemann
Confirmed! This bug (blt ring idle) seems to be fixed on 2.6.38-11.
There are still issues and other GPU hungs though - after 2 seconds of
playing sauerbraten in full-screen:

[ 54.562391] [drm:i915_hangcheck_elapsed] *ERROR* Hangcheck timer elapsed...
GPU hung
[ 54.563417] [drm:i915_do_wait_request] *ERROR* i915_do_wait_request returns
-11 (awaiting 36628 at 36618, next 36629)

Don't know if it's related to this bug though. Seems to be related to
xserver-xorg-intel. The whole sandy bridge GPU issues are really
annoying. And this nearly 8 months after first sandy bridge release ...

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 766440] Re: SIGSEGV when opening email - Address out of bounds in RADEONUploadToScreenCS

2011-07-21 Thread Laurent Marchal
Hello Bryce,

I didn't know exactly what you were talking about the bugged version (-evdev
u12) and now it's version u12.1..
So I naively checked the xserver-xorg-input-evdev version that doesn't match at
all (Version: 1:2.6.0-1ubuntu12)

Anyway I updated all packages to the latest version and I still have the same
issue.
Thanks for your help!

Bryce, sure you understood what I said above? With the packages from the
PPA the system doesn't boot! I can't even try to launch the game in
question. Anyway, answers to you questions in #4:

The lockup seems to happen every time for that specific application,
I've had lockups as many times as I've tried launching this app and I
have not had lockups in other situations.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 741930] Re: [natty] nvidia binary packages for older cards - dependencies not met

2011-07-21 Thread Rüdiger Kupper
I maintain approx. 200 machines for a secondary school using Linux Terminal
Server. It is very common for schools to re-use old machines as LTSP clients.
Our clients have old Nvidia cards and suffer from missing graphics
acceleration, which is required for quite a lot of applications from the
ubuntu-edu-* packages. Our pupils have a rather poor Ubuntu experience at the
moment, which is a pity, as our school would like to shift the attention of
young people to the open source world.
If I can help speeding up the process, please tell me what to do.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 813989] [NEW] X server freezes after login from GDM

2011-07-21 Thread Etienne
Public bug reported:

Hi there

Please find my question on launchpad at:
http://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+question/164868

I am not sure exactly where the bug is, but this is what happens: I am
running an HP Compaq 615 laptop with a an AMD X2 Dual-Core Processor
QL-64, and an ATI Raedon 3200 GPU. After a clean install, I am able to
log in with no problems from the GDM with the default installed driver:
either xserver-xorg-video-ati, or xserver-xorg-video-raedon (I'm not
sure what the default open driver is).

Problem:
After a couple of logins, the screen/computer just freezes after log in, and I
have to do a hard shutdown/restart. There is no mouse cursor, and the keyboard
does not respond to any command, not even the Caps Lock light. The screen is
most often black, but it is sometimes also the default Ubuntu dark purple.

The interim fix/workaround for this problem is to install the
proprietary fglrx driver. That restores functionality, albeit with
poorer performance, but reverting to the open driver(s) brings back the
freezing.

Thank you for your patience with my first bug report. :-)

The alpha2 image is oversize so for a live session a dvd or a USB is
needed. I installed it too, still ok, and subsequent updates are also

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 813207] Re: Display a mess in Unity 3d

2011-07-21 Thread Bryce Harrington
Hmm, the only actual X updates shown in your dpkg.log were these for
xorg 1:7.6+7ubuntu1 to 1:7.6+7ubuntu3:

xorg (1:7.6+7ubuntu3) oneiric; urgency=low

  * debian/rules:
- Reverse the symlinking of /usr/share/doc directories to x11-common.
This should now be handled automatically by pkgbinarymangler, and the
directory symlink now causes file conflicts. (LP: #812665)

-- Christopher James Halse Rogers r...@ubuntu.com Tue, 19 Jul 2011
17:32:01 +1000

xorg (1:7.6+7ubuntu2) oneiric; urgency=low

  * debian/local/Xsession.d/60x11-common_xdg_path: Add session script to
set xdg path depending on the selected session (compatible with
lightdm, gdm and kdm now) (LP: #804734)

 -- Didier Roche didro...@ubuntu.com Wed, 06 Jul 2011 09:39:17 +0200

However, neither of those sound like things that could cause display
corruption type problems.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 813207] Re: Display a mess in Unity 3d

2011-07-21 Thread Bryce Harrington
Hi Christopher, you said My latest boot to 2d isn't a picnic either -
can you please be more specific? Are you saying you reproduced the same
issues under the 2d environment? Or that you have other, unrelated
problems in 2d?

Whatever it is, given that there were no significant X updates during
the time period you updated, it seems doubtful this is actually an X
issue. I note several compiz and unity upgrades during this period
including deployment of new upstream code. Can you do some additional
testing to isolate whether the bug you're seeing might actually be due
to changes in unity or compiz? (E.g., try downgrading to the older
unity and compiz packages and see if the issue goes away.)

2D seems OK now, but 3D is still a mess. The only thing that remains
visible is AWN, where I've added enough launchers to test a few things.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 813207] Re: Display a mess in Unity 3d

2011-07-21 Thread Bryce Harrington
Ok, if 2D is working properly then that makes me think a bit more that
this is a compiz or unity bug. Here are the compiz/unity packages you
upgraded:

upgrade compiz-plugins-main2011-07-19 08:35:22
0.9.4+bzr20110527-0ubuntu4 0.9.5.0-0ubuntu1
upgrade compiz 2011-07-19 08:35:23
1:0.9.4+bzr20110606-0ubuntu6 1:0.9.5.0-0ubuntu1
upgrade unity 2011-07-19 08:35:24
4.2.0-0ubuntu4 4.2.0-0ubuntu5
upgrade libcompizconfig2011-07-19 08:35:31
0.9.4-0ubuntu3 0.9.5.0-0ubuntu1
upgrade compizconfig-backend-gconf 2011-07-19 08:35:32
0.9.2.4-0ubuntu1 0.9.5.0-0ubuntu1
upgrade compizconfig-python2011-07-19 08:35:46
0.9.4-0ubuntu1 0.9.5.0-0ubuntu1
upgrade compizconfig-settings-manager 2011-07-19 08:35:47
0.9.4-0ubuntu3 0.9.5.0-0ubuntu1

I'll go ahead and re-file this bug to compiz. I would recommend you
downgrade each of the above packages to the prior version in order to
determine more certainly that the compiz upgrades caused the regression.

** Package changed: xorg (Ubuntu) = compiz (Ubuntu)

I've investigate a little bit more this bug.

Actually, I haven't installed ATI proprietary driver. So I use only free

Here is the result of some command :

According to glxinfo, render is done by the Intel integrated card.

What does it mean ? Does the ATI card is used or not ?

When I install proprietary driver, Catalyst says something like no

I'm not sure this bug has really been solved :

I'm not a specialist... is it a Kernel bug ? or Xorg bug ?

fuzzy and corrupted when coming out of the screensaver. I'm using the

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 811640] Re: [gm45] GPU lockup render.IPEHR: 0x78080003

2011-07-21 Thread Bryce Harrington
Uninstall the PPA (using ppa-purge or similar), and then update to
latest to get the mesa update I mentioned. Then you should be able to
launch the game and test if it still hangs.

Regarding the PPA, you'd need to ssh in and gather the gpu error file
(/sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/i915_error_state) for me to ascertain if it's
the same GPU hang you were having or something new.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 814325] Re: fuzzy and corrupted display with update in natty-proposed

2011-07-21 Thread Bryce Harrington
The 7.2 -intel update adds patch 121_fdo-28798-fix.patch. This patch
significantly changes rendering behavior with 2D graphics acceleration,
thus is definitely a strong suspect for this issue (although it's quite
strange that it affects the console too!) To prove it is the patch's
fault, downgrade to 7.1; if it no longer reproduces within ~1 day, then
the patch is at fault and we should not proceed with the SRU. If it
still reproduces, then we should examine dpkg.log for other possible
suspects.

Corruption that affects the console indicates either a kernel bug, or an
X bug that somehow put the GPU into a really bad state. Booting and
reproducing on an earlier kernel would rule out it being due to a kernel
update.

If it *is* pinpointed to the patch, would you mind also booting an
oneiric livecd and see whether you can reproduce it there. I ask
because we're already including this patch in oneiric and if the same
issue exists there, we ought to look into it more closely. If it
doesn't occur on oneiric, then presumably we can just forgo the 7.2 SRU
and leave it at that.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 814346] Re: xorg-common depends on xdiagnose which pulls in all of gtk3

2011-07-21 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package xorg - 1:7.6+7ubuntu5

---
xorg (1:7.6+7ubuntu5) oneiric; urgency=low

  * debian/control: Move xdiagnose dependency to ubuntu-desktop.
xdiagnose has a gtk dependency, which would pull in gtk3 to kubuntu.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 814346] Re: xorg-common depends on xdiagnose which pulls in all of gtk3

2011-07-21 Thread Bryce Harrington
I've done option #1, and moved the dependency to ubuntu-desktop.

No plans for #2 at this time. Guessing kubuntu doesn't care if they
have xdiagnose or not... I don't think they do anything with X bugs.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 727620] Re: [Radeon HD 5650 and 5470] Kernel BUG during recovery boot and in normal boot (Hybrid graphics)

2011-07-21 Thread Martin Stjernholm
Since I've always gotten the bug in all the bisects I've tried, I
thought I better reverify bisect 006 which has been reported as working
by others. Unfortunately it didn't work for me, so we're getting
different results here. :(

I didn't get the oops in the log file, but I checked on screen that the
top 6 frame names were the same as in the oops at the top of this
ticket. If it's of any use, I can try to trig it again (in bisect 006,
that is) and write it down.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 812231] Re: Xorg freeze

2011-07-21 Thread Bryce Harrington
Hmm, there's no X or drm error messages in any of the log files you
provided. The activity (removing a USB key) sounds more like a
filesystem layer issue, so I'm forwarding this to the kernel.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 813581] Re: libdrm-nouveau1a

You don't want to uninstall the package, but rather just either add the
nouveau module to your blacklists, or if you'd prefer, add it to
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT in your /etc/default/grub file.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 814384] Re: Unity won't load, nvidia won't install

2011-07-21 Thread Bryce Harrington
It looks like the nvidia driver had failed to install, which usually
happens because it failed to build with dkms. Typically in these
situations, a make.log file is produced somewhere like
/var/lib/dkms/*/*/build/make.log. (ubuntu-bug looks for a file there
and attaches it if it exists... so I gather no such file was present in
this instance.)

See if you can reinstall nvidia-graphics-drivers again and get it to
produce the make.log file there.

If installing it via jockey doesn't produce a make.log somewhere, then
try installing nvidia manually:

  sudo apt-get install nvidia-graphics-drivers

In this case it ought to spit out error messages to the console.
