[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 879243] [NEW] wooo missing dependency

2011-10-21 Thread soapee01
Public bug reported:

nothing like having a couple of brews and getting annoyed by kpackagekit
and deciding to give the upgrade a go, and then seeing xorg fail.

Even better is having to troubleshoot xorg via an android ssh session
(is it X11 or x11, and where the heck is the tab...). And then finding
out that the 'nv' open source driver doesn't exist anymore (where's that
xkcd about X). At least I know sed and vesa worked.

The nvidia-96 driver FAILS to build. It complains about the source not
being present (it is). I figured maybe it was looking for an old
school linux symlink (no), or a linux-source-`uname -a` symlink (no).

It requires linux-headers-`uname -r` followed by a dpkg-reconfigure
nvidia-96 and then service restart kdm

Please fix the dependency.

Regards.

I updated to 11.10 and Unity-2D and LibreOffice crashes have ceased.
Still have the antialiasing option turned off, so that could also have
been the fix.

Is a line that start with a space followed by a # considered as comment?

No, comments must have their # on the first character of the line (and
they are usually stripped in the symbols file that ends up in the .deb).

As it is, it's parsed as symbol # associated to version package..
Hence the error message you saw.

In this case it would be a bug in dpkg-shlibdeps, otherwise it's a bug
 in mesa.

 affects ubuntu/mesa

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 838577] Re: GNOME Shell display problems with FGLRX

2011-10-21 Thread Steffen Sindzinski
This worked for me on a configuration with fglrx installed:

1.Download the current ATI driver here:
http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/linux/Pages/radeon_linux.aspx
2. Build the driver in terminal and download directory with: sh
ati-driver-installer-11-9-x86.x86_64.run --buildpkg
3. Remove the installed fglrx: sudo apt-get purge fglrx fglrx-amdcccle
4. Install the new driver packages by double clicking on the before built debs.
5. Make sure that the driver is installed: dpkg -l fglrx*
6. Restart
7. Check with: fglrxinfo

Normally it is recommended to execute but I did not do: sudo aticonfig
--initial
This writes the xorg configuration

If you wish to change back to the normal fglrx:
sudo apt-get purge fglrx fglrx-amdcccle
sudo apt-get install fglrx fglrx-amdcccle

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 877905] Re: [lucid] glx regression after upgrading xorg-server packages to versions in USN-1232-1

2011-10-21 Thread Norbert
Good morning!

While the original bug has been solved for me, I have discovered a side
effect of this patch: The bootsplash won't go back into graphical when
shutting down Ubuntu. I wasn't aware this until this morning after I had
reboot. Now I will try reinstalling it, but I guess it's still somehow
related to this problem.

Anyone else experiencing?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 754000] Re: Running Unity disables Xorg's 3-finger click support (middle click)

2011-10-21 Thread Daniel van Vugt
** Description changed:

as soon as i put down three fingers, the love handles appear. on the
macbook pro a middle click is done with a 3 finger click. this is very
low priority, and i could even see a wontfix. there's a simple work
around to just not put all 3 fingers down at the same time and then
click after all 3 are down.

Please note this bug is about physically clicking a clickpad with 3
fingers. 3 finger tapping is different and has been intentionally
overridden in Unity 3D by new gestures.
+
+ This bug only happens in Unity 3D. It does not happen with Unity 2D or
+ Gnome Shell.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 855414] Re: Unity dash becomes very slow/laggy when opening certain webpages (Launchpad) in Firefox

2011-10-21 Thread skalka
I'm affected by this bug too... It's very annoying and I must say that
with Firefox open dash fails to show quite everytime, it works regularly
only with white tab page focused. Strange thing I've discovered that
sometimes quick double click on Super key shows dash. Apps and files
lenses (super+a, super+f) work quite as expected, sometimes they're a
bit slow but at least they appear most of the times. I can confirm that
this issue is present with nvidia graphic cards and not with intel,
never tested on ati. I hope that this bug will get more consideration
'cos it really makes unity enjoyability a nightmare, needing to leave
keyboard to use mouse/touchpad.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 771788] Re: nVidia driver activated and apparently being used but reported as not being used by jockey-gtk

2011-10-21 Thread Alessandro Ceschini
As far as I'm concerned I've seen no improvement, still stuck on 2d on
11.04 as well as on 11.10 (recently updated). The only change is that
now Hardware Drivers tells me this driver is installed AND used. But
on System InformationsGraphic Cards, it says I've got NO driver
installed. Should I start a new bug report?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 771788] Re: nVidia driver activated and apparently being used but reported as not being used by jockey-gtk

2011-10-21 Thread Linuxexperte
hi Alessandro,

one question: did you do a reboot after installing this driver??
Normally, it is necessary to reboot the system after installation to get
this driver into action.

You also can test the successfull installation with the instruction
here:

http://askubuntu.com/questions/37084/nvidia-driver-activated-but-
currently-not-in-use

With this instruction, you will see, that your driver is in use after
rebooting your system. And you also notice the successfull installation
through an immediate downdrop of your GPU-temperature and the icon for
the GPU in your panel (if you have sensors-applet in your panel) also
changes to the correct one.

Greetings
Linuxexperte

2011-10-21 Thread Clark Evans
Ed,

There is another ticket, Bug 760142 (69 affected) that
seems similar/identical to Bug 606238 (53 affected) . It
is trying to be more generic though, while Bug 606238
limits itself to the Latitude E6510 (which I have).

Best,

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 876711] Re: Screen brightness resets to minmized when screen turns off

2011-10-21 Thread EricP
I have the same laptop (Dell Latitude D430) as Bobik-s and am
experiencing what appears to be the same problem with a fresh install of
, so I'll add some more information.

I tried adding the following kernel boot parameters one-by-one:
acpi_backlight=vendor,
acpi_backlight=video
dell_laptop.backlight=0
None of them make any difference. The gnome-settings-daemon PPA didn't appear
to make a difference either.

The Fn+Up/Fn+Dn work correctly at the login screen, but only if the
screen has not already automatically blanked. If the computer is left at
the login screen for ~10 minutes, then it will automatically blank. Move
the mouse and the backlight returns to partial brightness, but
Fn+Up/Fn+Dn do nothing.

System Settings - Screen contains a slider to adjust screen brightness.
If I first click on it with the mouse, I can then use the Left and Right
arrow keys to move the slider back and forth. After every 4 or 5 presses
of the left (or right) arrow key, the brightness changes, alternating
between brighter or dimmer. At either end of the slider the screen
brightness appears to alternate between minimum and maximum. When the
slider is 1 / 4 of the way across, the brightness alternates between 25%
and 75%. When the slider is near the middle, the alternations are barely
perceptible – perhaps between 40% and 60%

A question about something which may be related—the battery indicator at
the top of the screen is always visible, even when plugged in. Isn't it
supposed to disappear or change to indicate that it is running on AC?
Clicking on the indicator shows “Battery (charged)”. Removing the power
cord changes the text to “Battery (1:50 left)”.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 550625] Re: Alps touchpad is recognized but synaptics clients and scrolling do not work

2011-10-21 Thread Ed S
I've added a comment to that bug. I don't think marking as duplicate,
or removing or adjusting such a mark, is a privileged operation, but it
must be best if it's done by someone familiar with their symptoms. So I
won't dive in and adjust a lot of bugs.

(I suffer from a different bug, but I'm hoping to get some benefit from
this renewed interest and Seth's good work. Bug 755518, probably
Synaptics not ALPS chip.)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 876561] Re: Egalax touchscreen on Exopc Slate stops working

2011-10-21 Thread Massimo
Hi Sir,

i am working for install the last release of ubuntu in the exopc, for
use it in a scool, is a very good project for port ubuntu in the scool
on a touchscreen device. I have the same problem, but i have understand
this:

The touchscreen don't stop working, but it waits for a multi-touch gesture, and
occurs only when pressed while you press with one finger on the screen, also
press the second finger. At this time the device waits for multitouch gestures,
and does not recognize that the fingers were lifted from the touch screen.
Try running ginn to understand the problem.
If you are running a multi-touch gesture by pressing it with both fingers, the
tablet does not bug throughout the session.
For me it would be very important to solve, I would not explain the school,
which must be executed before a gesture multitouch otherwise ubuntu hangs and
becomes unusable.
You have made some improvement?
Excuse me if I speak bad English, I am Italian :-)
Is there anyone who can help us understand how to solve the problem?

The problem is that the driver on the live CD enables
only analog output where digital output remains disabled.

Workaround would be to get the analog cable to be able to install and
update the driver. I had to do the same already with Maverick installation.

My graphic card is Nvidia GT250.

1) Natty alpha 3
3) See the output xD both analog and digital outputs should be active
4) only analog output is active

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 850749] Re: Display unreadable after dimming

2011-10-21 Thread bbruecker
Same Problem on Dell Latitude D430.

In my case its just a bit different. I also selected not to dim, but
after some time the computer dims. I can activate the screen by pressing
the shift key, but the screen is dimmed to the darkest possible setting.
When I press the brightness key once, the screen is getting a bit
brighter, but if I press it again, it turns a bit darker agian (not as
dark as it was bofore).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 876721] Re: java swing JTable repaint issue with nvidia graphics

2011-10-21 Thread Claudiu Bulcu
My previous comment (about trying the reporting tool twice) was a
response to the second part of Walter's entry.

I've just realized that the message on one of the reporting tool's
windows hasn't been clear enough to me. There is an statement, followed
by a question, in the same phrase. So it seemed to me the first time.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 873495] Re: LightDM fails to start when installed in OEM mode after nvidia-current or nvidia-current-updates are installed

2011-10-21 Thread Carl Richell
** Summary changed:

- Xorg freeze on boot when installed in OEM mode after nvidia-current or
nvidia-current-updates are installed
+ LightDM fails to start when installed in OEM mode after nvidia-current or
nvidia-current-updates are installed

** Description changed:

- Occurs reliably with Sandy Bridge hardware.
+ Occurs reliably on fast Sandy Bridge hardware with a fast GPU - GTX
+ 485M, GTX 560M or GTX 580M.
+
+ Appears to be a race condition. LightDM attempts to start before
+ /dev/nvidiactrl is created. As a workaround add sleep 1 service
+ lightdm start to /etc/rc.local to start the service.
