I cannot reproduce this with doing a (partial) lucid-precise upgrade in a lucid live system. However, I think I see one thing which could go wrong: /var/lib/dpkg/info/x11-common.preinst correctly does if dpkg --compare-versions $2 lt-nl 1:7.6+7ubuntu7; then remove_conffile_lookup x11-common /etc/init/failsafe-x.conf fi to clean up its own old conffile, so that xdiagnose can put its own. xdiagnose also Replaces: x11-common ( 1:7.6+7ubuntu1), but that doesn't prevent xdiagnose from being unpacked before x11-common is upgraded. So I think xdiagnose should grow a Conflicts: x11-common ( 1:7.6+7ubuntu1) to ensure that x11-common gets upgraded before xdiagnose gets installed. You have been subscribed to a public bug: I am having a desktop (no laptop or such, a bigtower) with Ubuntu 11.10 and after an update a few days ago my computer started to hibernates itself out of the blue every 5-60 Minutes. The screen went black and the cumpoter turns off. When pressing the power-button it sometimes comes back to life directly (with a short time of high load) and sometimes it bootes completly from scratch (i think when hibernating fails). The curious thing is that a few minutes before the auto-hibernation it sometimes enters really fast the keys ba-- and then [right], [down], [left], setting the curser in the middle of the two '-'. Like when i am chatting with someone i am seeing that in the text-field of in the console or whereever my focus is on. I then saves my work and mostly a few minutes later the hibernation starts. Thanks for reporting this bug, possibly it is something that needs
solved in the window manager rather than X, but it does seem to be
deadspace-related so will leave it filed against xserver until it's
clearer how this should be addressed.
Two separate issues were reported, the second being a similar but
unrelated problem with compiz hotspots. We request that each issue be
filed as a different bug report. I'm narrowing this bug report to focus
on the first issue; please file a separate bug report (against compiz)

while this long standing problem has been mitigated with some previous work
and patches (eg: #389519) at least keeping the mouse away from the dead area,
the desktop behaviour is far from being precise still.
when using a couple of monitors with different vertical resolution,
icons can easily get lost on the shortest monitor, to reproduce the bug
just put on the shortest monitor enough icons to exceed a single
column, click on the desktop with the right mouse button and then
organize desktop by name.
another issue is with compiz corner hotspots bindings, they are never
triggered if there's a dead area above or below them, it depends on
where your shortest display is aligned in respect of the tallest (top or
bottom margin), to reproduce try for example to bind the Show Desktop
action on a corner of the shortest display.

Hi Hans, I've seen something like this but on Intel hardware, except only with the gnome-display-properties tool not xrandr. I don't seem to be able to reproduce it at the moment (perhaps it's fixed in Precise?) Release 10.10 was a while ago, so I'm curious if this is still broken. Would you mind re-testing for this using Precise (12.04)? The patch on 40063 simply reverts the cursor constraint feature -- not what we want for fixing the issue. Three other patches have been proposed: http://patchwork.freedesktop.org/patch/6217/ http://patchwork.freedesktop.org/patch/6209/ http://patchwork.freedesktop.org/patch/6488/ However, these are for fixing panning rather than scaling. I found a way around this issue on my system. Sorry but I am not on my Linux box right noe so am trying to remember details; essentially the AMD Control Center - admin version you start from the desktop DOES NOT make changes permanently. I suspect there are permission issues when it tries to write to configuration files. My workaround was to launch the application from the terminal sudo amdccle I think is the command. Thanks Daniel, your compiz and unity updates in your PPA have much improved the tearing on playback on a system I have here. This system displays from integrated video on its i7-2630QM (sandy bridge) CPU. Previously I've seen really bad tearing while playing back h264/mp4 at 30 fps with vlc and mplayer (in various modes) within the Unity desktop. Even so, I've got it to work that way in one distro, don't remember which one atm. In another it worked with gksu amdcccle in the alt+f2 box. A third one I had to copy the srandr file from an old distro, and hey presto. Couple bits to note:
1: As for the mic-mute LED. There was a thread a few months back (would
have to dig it up) where the LED functioning was brought up and the
proposed patch was never ack'd in favor of a more scale-able approach,
however I'm not sure if that is still an active effort. Here is the
patch in question for reference which I've tested on Precise and my
x220's LED light does function with the patch:

2: There is no userspace plumbing for this key (as pitti mentioned). I
have been using a workaround on my x220 to get the mic mute button to
function. With Oneiric and Precise, with these acpi script workarounds
the mute function _should_ function (no LED) when depressed (verify in
sound settings).

1: If using these scripts make sure you're seeing the acpi event when
the mic mute key is pressed, and that value matches what is entered in
/etc/acpi/events/lenovo-micmute:

2: Set both /etc/acpi/events/lenovo-micmute and /etc/acpi/micmute.sh to
be executable and restart the acpid service.
3: I've written micmute.sh in a way where the LED will be toggled, so it
relies on LED support, however it should work even without the

It works fine if I boot up with the monitor connected, but if I start without it and then plug it in while the X server is running, it completely locks up X. When I remove the monitor, X starts working again and I can continue as if nothing had happened. I have tested things while only running a basic X server/xterm and the problem still happens as soon as the monitor is plugged in. If you would like to eliminate absolutely all tearing then the solution is in CCSM: Workarounds Force full screen redraw (buffer swap) on repaint = ON And with Intel Sandy Bridge graphics I seem to get the best performance by combining that setting with: OpenGL Sync To VBlank = OFF (this doesn't work with other drivers like NVIDIA) Keep using ppa:vanvugt/compiz for the best performance too. In my experience this config looks the nicest. So, what's going on here is that the display manager is setting the displays to mirrored. In X, 'mirror' means 'find a common resolution supported by both monitors'. Unfortunately, in cases where the aspect ratio of the two displays differ, there will be zero XxY resolutions they have in common, and so X has to select the default VESA mode of 1024x768 (or one of the smaller required modes like 640x480 or worse). While this is the expected behavior, you're right that it looks really bad, and since it's the first thing people see it gives a poor impression. Certainly doesn't fill one with confidence that multihead in unity is going to work well. Unfortunately, most options to solve this have fairly nasty corner cases that can leave users with an unusable system, or at least extremely confused. So, I agree this is a bad problem, just not sure how it should be fixed. Fwiw, I experimented with scaling the external monitor while it is at 1024x768: xrandr --output HDMI2 --scale 1.33x1 and that looked better. I don't know why the display utility is not saving the settings for you. It looks like your ~/.config/monitors.xml is set properly; gnome- settings-daemon ought to load that and apply it automatically when you log in (it won't affect the greeter though). Anyway, that's probably a gnome-settings-daemon bug, so probably easiest to handle if you file a new report.
