[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 911086] Re: Touchpad stops working after unplugging monitor

2012-01-10 Thread Martin Pitt
Does this happen reproducibly? Does your monitor connection also include
an USB connector (often they have a builtin hub)? I see some USB
disconnects in the log, and wonder if that is from the touchpad (which
might be internally wired through USB) or from the monitor.

After adding the ppa ppa:oibaf/graphics-drivers the Libreoffice graphics appear
to be fixed.
However, the globalmenu still does not detect lo-menubar, as shown in the
screenshot.
Here's the updated driver copied from Ubuntu Software Center:

I think before it was 2:2.15?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 661248] Re: PCI Race Condition with COMPAL FL90

2012-01-10 Thread blackthunder
Hi, this solution works fine for me (Ubuntu Desktop 11.10 x86):

1 - clean install (from live CD)
* no download updates during setup
* no install 3rd party software during setup

2 - before rebooting PC after setup, run ctrl+alt+T
* sudo mount /dev/sda1 /mnt
* sudo mount --bind /dev /mnt/dev
* sudo mount --bind /dev/pts /mnt/pts
* sudo mount --bind /proc /mnt/proc
* sudo mount --bind /sys /mnt/sys
* sudo mount --bind /etc /mnt/etc
* sudo mount --bind /usr /mnt/usr
* sudo chroot /mnt

3 - che in the chroot terminal that only the nvidia-common are installed:
dpkg -l |grep nvidia

4 - if Yes, reboot PC else remove nvidia package and leave only the
nvidia-common

5 - the 1st boot will work fine; at the login screen run ctrl+alt+Fn
6- in the teminal:
* sudo apt-get install -f
* sudo dpkg --configure -a

if it's all ok, do:

* sudo apt-get --purge remove xserver-xorg-video-nouveau
* sudo apt-get --purge remove nvidia*
* sudo apt-get clean && sudo apt-get autoclean && sudo apt-get autoremove

* sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install nvidia-common && sudo apt-get
install nvidia-current
* sudo rm /etc/X11/xorg.conf*
* sudo nvidia-xconfig

* sudo nano /etc/default/grub

edit this and save:
GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=""

7-
* sudo apt-get install --reinstall plymouth
* sudo update-grub2
* sudo update-initramfs -u
* sudo reboot

8 - now, you can try to boot s.o. from the kernel 3.0.0.14-pae

9 - if fail, reboot and select in grub > previous version the kernel
3.0.0.12

when the kernel load stop and seems to fail, press alt-ctrl+Fn and reply
from "7"

I hope that this work for everybody ;)

crash, but I have reinstalled / as there were a number of dependency
problems. Running OK now. Thanks for your time.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 882710] Re: Dual monitors black out and session freezes, might be linked to switching workspaces

2012-01-10 Thread strange_cathect
I just experienced the bug. Here were the conditions:

Under Gnome:
1. Libreoffice document open.
2. Firefox open.
3. Clementine open.

Went to the left corner to access "activites" and as the expose-like
effect began to give me access to Windows and Applications the monitors
went black and a hard reboot was required.

This happened around 4:27 (16:27) or so. I'm attching the kernel log.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 912322] Re: Libre Office causes the windows manager to crash

2012-01-10 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Thorsten, I was being presumptuous that LibreOffice was crashing based
on the initial report. If GNOME3 is crashing you out to your login
screen, or hanging the OS requiring a reboot, this may be a bug in xorg
or GNOME3. Despite this, because your using the GNOME3 PPA, which is not
a software package provided by the official Ubuntu repositories, the
Ubuntu project can not support or fix your particular bug. Your welcome
to report this to the developers of the PPA at
https://launchpad.net/~gnome3-team . Thanks!

If you are interested in learning more about software repositories and
Ubuntu the following pages should be informative:

1. http://www.ubuntu.com/project/about-ubuntu/components - information about
Ubuntu repositories
2. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Repositories - information regarding
managing repositories

** Package changed: libreoffice (Ubuntu) => xorg (Ubuntu)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 914437] [NEW] Second display not recognized anymore; "EDID checksum is invalid"

2012-01-10 Thread Christian Weiske
Public bug reported:

After upgrading from Ubuntu 11.04 to 11.10, the second display is not
recognized anymore.

It's an amd64 system with a Radeon HD 5700 graphics card.
The first display, a Samsung P2250, connected via DVI, is recognized flawlessly.
The second display, a Sony SDM-S51, connected with a VGA cable and a
VGA-to-DVI-converter, is not recognized anymore.

dmesg is full of the following message:
[drm:drm_edid_block_valid] *ERROR* EDID checksum is invalid, remainder is 254
...
radeon :01:00.0: DVI-I-2: EDID block 0 invalid.
[drm:radeon_dvi_detect] *ERROR* DVI-I-2: probed a monitor but no|invalid EDID

I verified this bug on a completely new system (clean install, all
updates). Also reported as #24752 on landscape.canonical.com (" Second
display not recognized anymore").

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 764051] Re: Second monitor useless in dual desktop mode

2012-01-10 Thread amay82
Can confirm this. TwinView is not an option here because the second
screen is TV-OUT (LCD) with a different refresh rate, so TwinView causes
ugly tearing. And XMBC is not working in TwinView.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 554611] Re: nouveau driver locks up screen on certain operations

2012-01-10 Thread David Coles
A quick test this morning didn't show the issue on 11.10 (Chrome tab can
be moved fine), but I've currently got Compiz disabled and the current
Linux version of Chrome doesn't appear to have the translucent tab
effect.

I'll check with Compiz enabled tonight and close if I can't reproduce
anymore.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 906987] Re: syndaemon polls 5 times a second even though it is started with the -R XRecord extension option

2012-01-10 Thread Martin Pitt
It ought to be possible to implement syndaemon like gnome-session's idle
detection. It uses the XSync extension and XCreateAlarm(). I have
started making some investigations about this.

If all else fails, we could at least lower the polling frequency from 5
to 2 Hz, which would then match our default unlocking delay of 0.5
seconds.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 828761] Re: Resume from suspend takes much more time when nvidia-current driver is installed.

2012-01-10 Thread nerdy_kid
Bolick, I forgot to mention that I do get rendering quirks on resume
with the method I used (window contents white or black, whole screen
black with one/two windows showing -- very similar to your screenshot).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 914352] [NEW] X crashes and goes back to login while the screensaver runs

2012-01-10 Thread Gioele Barabucci
Public bug reported:

While the (blank) screensaver runs X will randomly crash, quitting the
session and going back to the login manager.

These crashes are random but far more likely to happen if Eclipse is
open: I can reproduce the crash 90% of the times with an open Eclipse
window, 30% of the times with no open windows.

The dmesg log is full of

[  368.351270] [drm:i915_hangcheck_elapsed] *ERROR* Hangcheck timer
elapsed... GPU hung
[  368.351275] render error detected, EIR: 0x
[  368.351294] [drm:i915_do_wait_request] *ERROR* i915_do_wait_request
returns -5 (awaiting 15549 at 15524)
[  369.100021] [drm:i915_hangcheck_elapsed] *ERROR* Hangcheck timer
elapsed... GPU hung
[  369.100026] render error detected, EIR: 0x
[  369.100046] [drm:i915_do_wait_request] *ERROR* i915_do_wait_request
returns -5 (awaiting 15552 at 15524)

There are other similar bug reports in launchpad but they all refer to
freezes. In my case I only see the X session crashing and going back to
GDM. After that I can log in fine and everything will work until the
screensaver kicks in again.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 814777] Re: Occassional mouse cursor corruption on primary display

2012-01-10 Thread David Megginson
This bug affects me as well. Sometimes moving the pointer gently to the
right side of my primary display restores the pointer completely, and
sometimes it restores it to a slight scrambled version.

I also have a second, probably-related problem, where the system gets
confused and compresses the mouse movement to about 30% of the screen
width in my left (secondary) monitor. Neither happens 100% predictably.
They're more likely after the secondary monitor (HDMI) has been
unplugged and plugged back in, but can happen without that, too.

i also encountered this problem, the last time i installed it was
synaptic, so i remove synaptic and install it back again to see if it
was from this package. i think the bug was from synaptic, it might be
the best solution but it work for the meantime.

I agree that it seems that several separate issues have been falsely
marked as duplicates of this bug.

The report that best describes the problems I have is #874619.

I will split it off.

That confirms my suspicion that this may be caused by several separate
issues.

What I am experiencing is clearly linked to Compiz/Unity on a
multi-screen desktop.

Some of the other reports suggest that there might also be a separate
issue with low performance related to specific combinations of drivers
and  hardware as well.

I will split off bug #874619 as its title better reflects the issue i am
seeing.

2012-01-10 Thread OIiver
On addition to my last posting.

The process that is consuming 50 % of the cpu time is nautilus on my system.
Deactivating nautilus for example by switching to XFCE solves the problem,
though it's not a good/real solution.

2012-01-10 Thread OIiver
> 2) It only occurs on multiscreen setups

No, i have only one monitor here, and it happens here too.
See Bug #890785, which was marked as a duplicate of this bug, but it is not.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/890785

The Bug here is talking about dual-head monitors, that i don't have/use.
I have an NVidia Geforce GTX 550 Ti videocard and clone mode etc. is turned of
in nvidia-settings.

Bug #890785 has nothing to do with this bug or dual-head mode or two
monitors, it also happens on one monitor systems.

> 3) It only and always occurs when the Unity plugin to Compiz is
active.

No, i deinstalled and removed Unity completely from my system, and the
CPU usage is still high.

This bug and Bug #890785 are in my opinion different bugs, they are no
duplicates.
The bugs should discussed independently.
And #890785 shouldn't be marked as a duplicate of this bug here.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 906987] Re: syndaemon polls 5 times a second even though it is started with the -R XRecord extension option

2012-01-10 Thread Martin Pitt

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 877438] Re: Unity/compiz has sluggish performance on dual-head with nvidia driver

2012-01-10 Thread Bo Nygaard Bai
I have spend a lot of time trying different setups to test this. The
conclusion seems to be:

1) The problem is apparent on both ATI and Nvidia hardware.

2) It only occurs on multiscreen setups

3) It only and always occurs when the Unity plugin to Compiz is active.

Simple reproduction can be done by:

Standard unity desktop session across multiple screens.

Run the attached python program in a fullscreen terminal on one screen.

Try typing in another terminal on another screen.

Python program to spout lines:

import time
import sys

try:
lps=float(sys.argv[1])
except IndexError:
lps=0

a=0
while True:
a+=1
print "Dette er lang linie nummer %d som skal vise om vi kan lave hurtig
scroll" % a
if lps > 0:
time.sleep(1.0/lps)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 914216] [NEW] arrandale xorg very laggy when Intel vt-d is enabled

2012-01-10 Thread Martin Pool
Public bug reported:

I have a thinkpad x201 with intel graphics. I experienced intermittent
but frequent multi-second lags in X input, both keys and mouse on
precise, using both the standard xorg and also the current one from the
x-staging ppa. With help from raof, I discovered that turning off vt-d
in the bios fixed the problem. So it seems like there is a bug in X to
do with handling vt-d.
