[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 934184] [NEW] Draging window with a mousepad needs extra tab for release (locked drags)12.04
You have been subscribed to a public bug: Ubuntu unity 12.04 alpha: After the last update (15-2-2012) the behaviour of the mouse-pad changed. Normally if i want to drag or maximise a window i can double tab on the mouse-pad and drag the window. After that, I release my finger and I'm done. At this moment the mouse pointer sticks to the window (a hand icon) and it needs a extra tab to release it. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 927918] Re: Frequency scaling causes whole-system micro-freezes / Lags / stutters with AMD Zambezi (Bulldozer) CPU
** Description changed: Dear Ones, - This situation is permanent. It happens in both Ubuntu and Ubuntu 2D. + When frequency scaling is activated (more details below) the system has + short freezes, short lags, short time-outs. They vary in length and + can be as long as about 1 second. Here's a video(1). + + It doesn't matter whether it is Unity or Unity 2D. + + Windows 7 runs smooth, without the stuttering / framedrop problem in my + LCD's Maximum resolution of 1280x1024. + + Testing with a dedicated PCI Express GPU (Radeon R300 if I remember + correctly), the stuttering persisted. + + Here's some testing with different governors: + performance: smoothness goodness + ondemand: the stuttering as demonstrated in the video + conservative: stuttering reduced to seemingly about 10% compared to ondemand + powersave: stuttering increase seemingly to about five times more than with ondemand + + When using ondemand, raising minimum frequencies results in less + stuttering. Raising the minimum frequency of all four cores to the + second step, 1.7GHz, helps a lot and and raising it to 2.5GHz results no + stuttering. This is under the limited strain of dragging windows around + in 1280x1024 in compiz, Ubuntu 11.10. I've also tested 2012-02-06 image of precise. Still occurs. - For example, when I drag windows around, there are framedrops. Is the - term framedrops clear? The movement is jumpy. As if frames are skipped - in the rendering of the display. So it seems that the window that I'm - moving is jumping instead o smooth movement. + It didn't happen when my CPU was an AMD Sempron 140. As soon as I + switched to the AMD FX-4100 CPU this started. - The stuttering seems to be generated by CPU activity, I've noticed. + As per Gigabyte's instructions(2), in order to have support for this + CPU, I upgraded the BIOS from the F2 version to the F3 version + before replacing the CPU (flashrom FTW!) If it is necessary, I can still + put in the old Sempron 140 CPU for testing. - Funny thing is that it didn't happen when my CPU was an AMD Sempron 140. - As soon as I switched to the AMD FX-4100 CPU this started. - - I don't know if this is X.org, radeon or maybe linux... I apologize and - I will let you decide. + More stuff I tried since replacing the CPU: I have played with BIOS + settings - trying different configurations. I also replaced to a new, + more adequate PSU. I also tried different RAM sticks and different + amounts of them (1, 2 and 4 sticks). [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 934770] Re: Inadvertant mouse movement click is causing cursor to stick on left click
That seems the same issue than bug #934770 the change was discussed described by Chase on https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-desktop/2012-February/003694.html * When the user checks Enable mouse clicks with touchpad, I believe the Synaptics Locked Drags setting should be true. ... If it's not entirely clear what the change is, try setting the property and playing with it. Enabling the property resolves the problem of trying to drag farther than your touchpad is wide or tall. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 934770] Re: Inadvertant mouse movement click is causing cursor to stick on left click
The locked drag is accounting for some of this yes, users can exit with a single tap when dragging something. (though in the past I believe most users of the typical single finger touchpads would just simply hold button one for extended drags What it, lthe ocked drag being enabled, isn't accounting for is the constant 'locked highlighting' in browsers text files ala the 2nd video . In this case a double tap, (2 taps, 1 finger) is needed to exit or wait for the time out At least here on a small touchpad, 1.5X2 inches, this is occurring constantly. Is it now the position that I many other users have to either put up with it, 2 tap out, or retrain our use of touchpads? Again on small touchpads an inadvertent single finger 2 tap is common Additionally this change or changes are now causing these periods of loss of any left click function, in these cases a wait out is needed. I've not yet found how to reproduce that other then it's definitely caused by an inadvertent 2 or maybe 3 tap, single finger. (with 2 3 single finger tap disabled here it has never re-occured I'm not sure to whose benefit these changes are being made for, likely not the majority at this point it would seem better to provide them thru non -default options. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 938039] [NEW] Lose Touchpad functionality
Public bug reported: ** I think this is a regression as my touchpad worked just fine until recently ** Before logging in, and shortly after logging in, I have a working touchpad on my MacBook Pro. However, as soon as I start to use Unity's Dash to launch a program, I lose that touchpad completely for that session and have to plug in a standard mouse. This behavior started just recently. I noticed that I can easily replicate this by launching the Unity Dash and then start typing in the search field to look up an application. As soon as I do that, the touchpad dies. Also, I've noticed that I lose the touchpad when I starting typing inside a Nautilus window (e.g. search) as well. From what I see, then, I lose the touchpad's functionality as soon as I start typing into any available field, be it the Unity Dash or a Nautilus window. I just now tried it again, freshly logged in, typing away on the empty desktop with the Nautilus search field displayed in the lower right corner. Sure enough, my touchpad stopped working right away. sudo dmidecode -s system-product-name MacBookPro5,2 lsb_release -rd Description:Ubuntu precise (development branch) Release:12.04 apt-cache policy xserver-xorg-input-synaptics xserver-xorg-input-synaptics: Installed: 1.5.99~git20120220-0ubuntu2 Candidate: 1.5.99~git20120220-0ubuntu2 Version table: *** 1.5.99~git20120220-0ubuntu2 0 500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ precise/main amd64 Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 12.04 Package: xserver-xorg-input-synaptics 1.5.99~git20120220-0ubuntu2 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 3.2.0-17.26-generic 3.2.6 Uname: Linux 3.2.0-17-generic x86_64 NonfreeKernelModules: nvidia wl ApportVersion: 1.92-0ubuntu1 Architecture: amd64 Date: Tue Feb 21 12:21:07 2012 DistUpgraded: Log time: 2012-01-31 06:52:50.449673 DistroCodename: precise DistroVariant: ubuntu InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 11.10 Oneiric Ocelot - Release amd64 (20111012) MachineType: Apple Inc. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 934184] Re: Draging window with a mousepad needs extra tab for release (locked drags)12.04
Addition: I did not do anything with any setting, just updated Ubuntu 12.04 and after that the locked drag activated. AFTER that i was looking in mouse settings, but i can't change this setting there. So i installed Gpointing Device Settings. There i was enable to set this setting OFF and this works only one session. So i think there are two problems here, 1. The locked drags are activated after installing updates (and can't be disabled through the Ubuntu gui) 2. settings of Gpointing Device Settings are not saved after reboot (other problem) I do not know how to change my mouse settings now, it still locked drag (and i do not like that). They vary in length and can be as long as about 1 second. Here's a video(1). I've received help from the fantastic folks at the xorg-driver-ati mailing list. Here's the thread(2). It doesn't matter whether it is Unity or Unity 2D. Windows 7 runs smooth, without the stuttering / framedrop problem in my LCD's Maximum resolution of 1280x1024. Testing with a dedicated PCI Express GPU (Radeon R300 if I remember correctly), the stuttering persisted. Here's some testing with different governors: performance: smoothness goodness ondemand: the stuttering as demonstrated in the video conservative: stuttering reduced to seemingly about 10% compared to ondemand powersave: stuttering increase seemingly to about five times more than with ondemand When using ondemand, raising minimum frequencies results in less stuttering. Raising the minimum frequency of all four cores to the second step, 1.7GHz, helps a lot and and raising it to 2.5GHz results no stuttering. This is under the limited strain of dragging windows around in 1280x1024 in compiz, Ubuntu 11.10. I've also tested 2012-02-06 image of precise. Still occurs. It didn't happen when my CPU was an AMD Sempron 140. As soon as I switched to the AMD FX-4100 CPU this started. As per Gigabyte's instructions(3), in order to have support for this CPU, I upgraded the BIOS from the F2 version to the F3 version before replacing the CPU (flashrom FTW!) If it is necessary, I can still put in the old Sempron 140 CPU for testing. More stuff I tried since replacing the CPU: I have played with BIOS settings - trying different configurations. I also replaced to a new, more adequate PSU. I also tried different RAM sticks and different amounts of them (1, 2 and 4 sticks).
