[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 933289] Re: bad flickering with Radeon drivers in 12.04 Precise

2012-02-29 Thread Britt Yazel
This is not necessarilly a regression, as I have yet to know an
experience in Ubuntu with the open sourced Radeon drivers without a fair
amount of flicker. (There has been flicker since 10.10 when I first
started using AMD graphics on my laptop and desktop). The bug that was
filed said "fixed flicker using the radeon driver with Compiz" or
something to that extent, but I do not know of the specifics of the
package that carried the patch. (possibly a compiz patch or a Unity
patch, I read a lot of changelogs and it has slipped my mind).

I tried searching for the updates that I installed on the 16th of
Feburary, and I installed full updates to my compiz and my unity both on
the same day, so it is most likely in the changelogs for one of those
projects.

In Arch linux I was running the 1.11 version of X.org, Mesa 7.11, and I
was running the linux kernel 3.2.0 (or some variation of that version);
as arch updates so readily it is hard to know exactly which version of
the kernel it was, but all times I have ran arch with open sourced
Radeon drivers it has been a flawless and seamless experience. Is there
any way to get any of the Ubuntu devs to try out Arch on a system with
Radeon graphics to see what they are doing and possibly merge any
patches they have made into mainline Ubuntu?

Yes I have tried installing fglrx, that is what I am currently running
as to avoid the screen flicker. I do not see any flickering behavior
with fglrx, but the desktop itself is noticably slower when dragging
windows and interacting with the desktop. (On a side note I have noticed
that Precise still is using an old version of fglrx from a couple months
ago which does not contain a lot of the fixes that AMD released for
Gnome-shell integration. Is this going to be changed at all? I would
like to see a more up-to-date video driver for some of the fixes.) Also,
when running the fglrx driver in the system settings>details it
registers as a VESA driver, when it is clearly the fglrx driver that is
activatedbut that is a different issue ;-)

I do believe that it could be a x.org/mesa/kernel driver issue, and I have seen
similar flickering issues in an out-of-the-box install of Fedora 16, but in
subsequent updates it seemed to have cleared up. And, like I have mentioned
before, Arch linux has a absolutely fabulously working version of the FOSS
Radeon stack.

I would love to render any assistance that I can towards fixing this issue, but
my knowledge of programing is slim at best. I am a work-in-progress when trying
to learn more about patches and the bug fixing process, so I may or may not be
able to help.
I am mostly just reporting what I have seen with my various dabbles with other
linux based operating systems, and how Ubuntu differs in my experience with
them.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 943723] [NEW] EeePC 900 "ETPS/2 Elantech Touchpad" stops working after unknown delay

2012-02-29 Thread Matt Wheeler
Public bug reported:

After some delay (how long it is or if it's consistent I don't know) the
touchpad becomes completely unresponsive.

Logging out and back in fixes the problem. Rebooting fixes the problem.
Plugging in a mouse and using that works, but the touchpad remains dead.

[Problem]
Mouse cursor corruption when switching users with an older ATI card

[Original Description]
I'm guessing the box is 64x64 pixels. It's got horizontal lines across it. The
mouse pointer looks completely normal in screenshots, so I am including a
picture taken with my phone.

It looked messed up in the same way on the other account, and continues
to look messed up now that I have switched back. It still functions
normally, but it's a little hard to know where you're clicking since the
actual pointer seems to be a bit away from the upper left corner of this
box.

I've just reproduced it twice tonight. It seems to happen randomly when
switching to other accounts or to the login screen. I can't get it to
happen consistently however so it's hard to tell what's causing it.
Since my last reboot, I've switched through a bunch of accounts, gnome3,
unity, and unity 2d, without getting the mouse corruption.

By the way, I use a program called redshift, which causes a reddish hue
at night, as can be seen in the picture. Redshift does not appear to
affect the mouse pointer though. It may also cause this bug I guess.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 899159]

2012-02-29 Thread Kenxeth
Tom,

It turns out that your GPU hang was due to a bug in our MRT support. It
should be fixed on master by:

commit 172bb92db1a3c317867d9cfec6f15c09c37a0f6c
Author: Kenneth Graunke
Date: Sat Feb 18 21:29:29 2012 -0800

i965: Only set Last Render Target Select on the last FB write.

Fixes GPU hangs in OilRush, Trine, and Amnesia: The Dark Descent,
which all use MRT (multiple render targets).

NOTE: This is a candidate for release branches.

Bugzilla: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=40059
Bugzilla: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=45216
Reviewed-by: Eric Anholt

That patch is also on the 8.0 branch as of today. Your apitrace file no
longer hangs my system. Could you confirm?

Thanks! Sorry this took so long.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 933289] Re: bad flickering with Radeon drivers in 12.04 Precise

2012-02-29 Thread Bryce Harrington
Britt, a few questions.

First, is this a regression? If so, when did you first start noticing
the flickering?

You mentioned there was a recent fix released; can you supply some
additional pointers as to what that fix was or when it went in?

You mentioned you don't see it in Arch linux; what version of X.org,
mesa, and kernel were you running there?

Have you tried installing fglrx? If so, do you see the bad behavior
when running that? (Note that the fglrx currently in Precise has a bug
when playing video with Xv, so you may wish to uninstall it and return
to the foss driver once you're done testing.)

Given that you see similar misbehaviors in gnome shell and unity, it
does seem reasonable to assume it is due to an X.org/mesa/kernel driver
issue.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 943643] [NEW] Fonts are blurry after the installation of Nvidia driver using jockey

2012-02-29 Thread fmo
Public bug reported:

I installed Ubuntu 12.04 from daily image (29/02/2012), everything
worked fine then I received the pop-up to install Restricted drivers
which I did and after rebooting I noticed that all the fonts were blured
like if the resolution was set incorrectly.

I ran nvidia-settings to check that the definition was definitely my LCD
default 1680x1050 and everything appears to be fine.

I also tried the driver nvidia-current-updates and it does absolutely
the same.

My card is a Nvidia 9800GT and it has always worked fine with the Nvidia
driver.

My xorg.conf contains the following:
Section "Device"
Identifier "Default Device"
Option "NoLogo""True"
EndSection

I have attached my xorg log file.

Please let me know if you need anything else, I can only test during UK
evening times.

I also want to mention that this is a re-install, I had a Precise
install before that had the same problem and I wanted to make sure that
re-installing it wouldn't fix the bug (it didn't, at least while the
nvidia driver is installed, it seems to work fine with Nouveau).

Sure, I can do that. I don't really have the time to be building them
myself, but if you provide me some binaries I'm happy to try them out
this evening (Pacific Time).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 943494] [NEW] Login screen shows corrupted fragments of prior user's session on dual-screen setup with proprietary nvidia drivers

2012-02-29 Thread F.H.
Public bug reported:

See attached photo. The login screen is showing screen fragments of the
prior user's session -- which could contain sensitive or private
information. This happens only very rarely, after prolonged multi-day
use. Logging in and out gets rid of the problem.

2012-02-29 Thread Joseph Salisbury
@Russell

I'd like to perform a kernel bisect to identify the commit that caused
this regression. Would you be able to test a few test kernels to
identify the bad commit?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 942334] Re: synaptics touchpad no longer seems to detect 2- and 3-finger clicks

2012-02-29 Thread Russell Cloran
Booting back into 3.2.0-17.27 brings the problem back, yup. After
rebooting to 3.2.0-16.25 again and the problem is not present.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 901630] Re: multitouch + qt doesn't work (eg fingerpaint demo) with wacom serial touchscreen

2012-02-29 Thread Chase Douglas
If it's a serial touchscreen, try these instructions from Brian Murray:

http://www.murraytwins.com/blog/?p=103

If it's a usb touchscreen, try uninstalling xserver-xorg-input-wacom.

Hopefully after the above your touchscreen will be using the X evdev
input module. It has support for multitouch, which will then work with
uTouch for gestures.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 943314] [NEW] ati drivers prevent boot and start-up

2012-02-29 Thread pupsocket
Public bug reported:

Both proprietary and supported drivers for ATI graphics appear to cause
a failure of shutdown and start. Occasionally software-commanded restart
succeeds in shutting down and occasionally boot-up succeeds on the first
try, but usually neither works without a forced power-off. Most of the
time, two physical power-offs are needed to restart.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 909926] Re: corrupted graphics on unity login

2012-02-29 Thread Jan Rathmann
I am also seeing this and can confirm that it appears with both Nouveau and
Nvidia propritary drivers.
For me it is a bit of less serious, since the corrupted screen content goes
away after a few seconds and the Unity desktop is shown properly afterwards.

I also took a photo with my camera of the screen during login (directly
after entering my password) which I'm attaching here. Note that the
screen obviously shows a random dump of previous content of the graphic
card memory, some parts even contain "screenshots" of my previous
Oneiric session where I downloaded the Precise daily image and prepared
my pen drive (three or four reboots ago!).

Kind regards,
Jan

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 943162] [NEW] libgl1-mesa-dev libGL.so to mesa/libGL.so which conflicts with nvidia's libGL.

2012-02-29 Thread Lorenz Mösenlechner
Public bug reported:

It seems like libgl1-mesa-dev creates the symbolic link /usr/lib/x86_64
-linux-gnu/libGL.so, pointing to mesa/libGL.so. This conflicts with
NVidia's libGL.so and ignores the alternative settings. For instance, a
call to dlopen will load the mesa library instead of the nvidia library.
This is in particular a problem when using OpenGL in dynamic languages
such as Python or Common Lisp since they foreign function interfaces use
something like dlopen.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 774978] Re: xserver crashes in RecordAReply when XRecord is enabled in syndaemon

2012-02-29 Thread mrsirrisrm
Disabling the Record extension seems to have stopped the crashes for me
(on 11.10), however Workrave currently requires Record to work. Are any
other people on here using Workrave?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 941942] Re: Playing video crashes the desktop

2012-02-29 Thread Henri Cook
My only guess is that these errors have something to do with it - how I
can debug them I don't know. I'm assuming that 'no matching device'
might be my on board graphics or similar and the 'ADL Handler' warnings
are the more serious:

[ 414.051] (WW) Falling back to old probe method for fglrx

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 941942] Re: Playing video crashes the desktop

2012-02-29 Thread Henri Cook
I have this exact problem with a 3-screen Radeon HD 6800 setup. I
suspect it's also related to the fact that unity/gnome3 look horrible
(no 3d?) which i'm not as bothered about, but just in case it's
relevant. glxinfo says that I have direct rendering so i'm not sure what
else to check or even what to try to fix?

Sad Panda :-(

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 879522] Re: FGLRX installed but it seems to be still Vesa in use

2012-02-29 Thread progmachine
It is strange situation. 3D acceleration is working, so can say that
fglrx driver is running, but all desktop experience is slower than
without fglrx, and video playback is not smooth.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 937706] Re: Oneiric unpredictable crashes straight out to login screen

2012-02-29 Thread Mark S
Hello Fabio,
Another crash this morning. I really cannot afford to keep losing work like
this :-(
Unfortunately the crash happened before I had checked the debuggin options.
Would the report still be useful? Also, I ran xdiagnose and it said that it
might be sending sensitive information such as hostname so I'm not sure whether
to press the send button in Apport or not?
Thanks,
Mark
