[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 956208] Re: Screen corruption on AMD with Radeon driver
The llvmpipe CPU gallium driver nowadays supports OpenGL quite well, although it seems it's not yet correct enough for Unity. VMWare is mentioned as the vendor since they've (probably) done most of the llvmpipe driver work, so they get the credit. The key problem is that fglrx driver was in use, and radeon driver was tried to be temporarily used instead. Removing the fglrx driver has a long history of not working too well - I'm not sure about the current situation - and at least it needs to be completely removed/purged before trying out radeon driver, because of the diversions it makes to move normal Mesa OpenGL libraries away from usage. So, two issues: 1. llvmpipe should be probably blacklisted for Unity for 12.04, forcing to Unity 2D. Even if it would work, it'd mean something's wrong for ati/nvidia/intel users that should use GPU ccelerated drivers. 2. fglrx may need some fixing, although in this specific case some additional questions need to be answered: a) was fglrx removed using Jockey or by manually removing the package (just to collect data, there is no valid reason why both shouldn't work, but with the manual method purge must be used), b) was the computer rebooted in between (both "NonfreeKernelModules: fglrx" and dmesg indicate the module being loaded, possibly interfering) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to the bug report. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/956208 Title: Screen corruption on AMD with Radeon driver To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/956208/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

Alexander, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. It looks like that this moving dots around selection (animation which appears right after Ctrl+C) are causing this behaviour. Tested on libreoffice-calc 3.4.3, 3.4.4 and 3.4.5. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 918791] Re: qemu-kvm dies when using vmvga driver and unity in the guest
** Also affects: qemu-kvm (Ubuntu Oneiric) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Also affects: xserver-xorg-video-vmware (Ubuntu Oneiric) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Description changed: + = + SRU Justification: + 1. impact: kvm crashes + 2. Development fix: don't allow attempts to set_bit to negative offsets + 3. Stable fix: same as development fix + 4. Test case (see below) + 5. Regression potential: if the patch is wrong, graphics for vmware vga over vnc could get messed up + = + 12.04's qemu-kvm has been unstable for me and Marc Deslauriers and I figured out it has something to do with the interaction of qemu-kvm, unity and the vmvga driver. This is a regression over qemu-kvm in 11.10. TEST CASE: 1. start a VM that uses unity (eg, 11.04, 11.10 or 12.04). My tests use unity-2d on an amd64 host and amd64 guests 2. on 11.04 and 11.10, open empathy via the messaging indicator and click 'Chat'. On 12.04, open empathy via the messaging indicator and click 'Chat', close the empathy wizard, move the empathy window over the unity luancher (so it autohides), then do 'ctrl+alt+t' to open a terminal When the launcher tries to auto(un)hide, qemu-kvm dies with this: [10574.958149] do_general_protection: 132 callbacks suppressed [10574.958154] kvm[13192] general protection ip:7fab9680ea0f sp:74440148 error:0 in qemu-system-x86_64[7fab966c4000+2c9000] Relevant libvirt xml: - - - - + + + + If I change to using 'cirrus', then qemu-kvm no longer crashes. Eg: - - - - - + + + + + The workaround is therefore to use the cirrus driver instead of vmvga, however being able to kill qemu-kvm in this manner is not ideal. Also, unfortunately unity-2d does not run with with cirrus driver under 11.04, so the security and SRU teams are unable to properly test updates in GUI applications under unity when using the current 12.04 qemu-kvm. I can make more test if needed. That 384 number seems like the most likely suspect. I see indications several places that theres only 64M of sideport VRAM, but 384 == 128 + 256 I'm not sure where that specific piece of data (the 128M of internal vram) is coming from, or whether it can be "fixed" by poking 64 * 1024 * 1024 into some register... [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 956579] [NEW] choppy video when vdpau is enabled
Public bug reported: This used to work just fine in Oneiric so it has to be some weird regression that Precise has introduced When vdpau is enabled as the video output in smplayer (mplayer2), the video stutters a lot. the same problem is not seen when xv is used as the output route. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 956208] Re: Screen corruption on AMD with Radeon driver
Oh wait, I just discovered these lines in the UnitySupportTest.txt attachment: Error: command ['/usr/lib/nux/unity_support_test', '-p', '-f'] failed with exit code 1: OpenGL vendor string: VMware, Inc. OpenGL renderer string: Gallium 0.4 on llvmpipe (LLVM 0x300) OpenGL version string: 2.1 Mesa 8.0.1 Not software rendered:[31;01mno[00m Unity 3D supported: [31;01mno[00m First line explains a lot. The command exited with an error because the last line says Unity 3D isn't supported. It's intended. Ignoring that part of the line, I find it really surprising that the vendor string is VMWare. Are you running Ubuntu in VBox/VMWare Player or something? Second, AFAIK gallium based drivers are known to have issues like these. Can someone from X-SWAT clarify? Third, "Not Software Rendered" says no. That means software rendering is being used. That said, I find it really really surprising how Compiz AND gnome-session allowed you to log into Unity 3D. GNOME-Session usually runs the unity-support-test utility, and if it returns an error (like it appears in your case), it tries to boot Unity 2D. That check step apparently didn't work in your case. Even after that, if Compiz ever fails to load the composite plugin or fails to start OpenGL, it falls back to Unity 2D. For some reason, both these measures didn't avoid you from booting into Unity 3D. I have these questions from you: 1) Are you running Ubuntu in a VM? 2) Did Unity 3D run fine with fglrx? 3) Try rebooting. Do you get a fallback Unity 2D session? If not, does running unity --reset help? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to the bug report. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/956208 Title: Screen corruption on AMD with Radeon driver To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity/+bug/956208/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 956208] [NEW] Screen corruption on AMD with Radeon driver
You have been subscribed to a public bug by Bilal Akhtar (bilalakhtar): I'm not sure what's going on here. I have removed fglrx and am using the radeon driver. Logged into Unity 3D and got some horrid flickering. When I tried to file a bug it complained that I'm using software rendering. My Setup: Onboard: Integrated Graphics Chipset: Intel(R) 965G (VGA) PCI Dual head (one VGA and one DVI): NVIDIA GPU GeForce 6600 (NV43) at PCI:1:0:0 (GPU-0) Three monitors of 3 different sizes (what I could scrounge up at work) Left Monitor is using the onboard Intel Middle Monitor is using the VGA on the GeForce Right Monitor is using the DVI with a VGA converter on the GeForce Section "ServerLayout" Identifier "Manual Config" Screen 0"Screen-Optiquest" 1280 0 Screen 1"Screen-ViewSonic" 2960 180 Screen 2"Screen-Acer" 0 60 InputDevice "Mouse0" "CorePointer" InputDevice "Keyboard0" "CoreKeyboard" Option "Xinerama" "true" EndSection The reason for my crazy layout: I want only the middle monitor to have the panel/toolbar, which is why I'm using Xinerama and Screen 0 is my middle monitor. I'm not using Twinview, because my resolutions are different on each monitor. I have found that the mouse getting stuck usually happens when I am waiting for a Window to render. This is mostly when a program is running in Wine or if I am waiting for Firefox to load a video or a flash based picture gallery AND when I move my mouse across screens. If I wait until the window is fully rendered to move my mouse, the mouse does not get stuck. I hope this helps. I wish this issue would get the attention it needs. 54 comments, 24 (known) people affected, a Google search turns up many other forum posts with the same unresolved issue, multiple affected OSes, absolutely no workaround...this list goes on. This is a very frustrating issue. The reason for having multiple monitors is because it helps us be more productive. It defeats the purpose of being productive when my system locks up 2, 3, 4+ times a day, losing all my unsaved changes, killing any running processes, and having to wait for my system to reboot...just my 2 cents. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xorg-server in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/570151 Title: mouse stuck jumping between screens To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/570151/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 931818] Re: Elantech Touchpad become unusable in precise
On my system with Elantech touchpad, there sometimes is trouble with detecting motion events. For example, if I scroll through a menu with the pointer, the menu items are not hilighted as they should be, and the overlay scrollbar does not work correctly. Curiously, attaching a USB mouse fixes this somewhat (that is, it works correctly with the touchpad, as soon as a mouse is plugged in!), and so does forcing the "psmouse" driver to the "imps" protocol, so that the touchpad isn't handled by synaptics anymore. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-input-synaptics in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/931818 Title: Elantech Touchpad become unusable in precise To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-input-synaptics/+bug/931818/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
