[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1034747] [NEW] files on desktop continue onto non-existent monitor

2012-08-08 Thread Adam Thompson
Public bug reported:

With a dual-monitor setup where monitor "A" is larger (higher-res) than "B",
and "A" is positioned *above* B, centered;
And when the display of files on the Desktop (corresponding to ~/Desktop) is
enabled;
And the files are organized in a top-to-bottom, left-to-right direction (this
is the default);
Then the leftmost column (or two, or three) of files extends right off the
bottom of monitor "A" into mid-air to the left of where monitor "B" starts and
they are completely inaccessible via the desktop. A file browser window must
be opened and navigated to Desktop in order to access the files.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1034743] [NEW] modules loaded are reloaded again

2012-08-08 Thread dino99
Public bug reported:

Nouveau driver installed, but not found as "additional driver"
and xorg.0.log is showing that :
- xorg is trying to load uninstalled drivers (seems strange, it only should
detect the installed ones)
- xorg loads the installed drivers, then try again to load them to finally find
they was already loaded (what a mess)

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 993187] Re: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.

2012-08-08 Thread john smith
I had this bug on my HP dm1 4xxx series notebook (AMD e-450 / radeon
6230m / BCM 4313).

I had full system lockup with no other option but hard reset. It occurs
in other linux distributions also but Ubuntu suffered the most by a long
shot.

I followed all the threads and tried many of the suggestions. Over two
weeks I have tried 3.2, 3.4 and 3.5 kernel and had many many reinstalls.
I have tried with/without proprietary amd catalyst drivers (as well as
different versions) and with/without the proprietary broadcom drivers. I
also tried various desktop environments. The problem persisted despite
my efforts.

Most often, the computer would crash at high system loads, when the fan
was just kicking in and the computer was hot.

However I believe I now have a workaround (working for 3 days without
problem):

Disable the kernel thermal module with "thermal.off=1"

1. sudo gedit /etc/default/grub
from:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
to:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash thermal.off=1"

2. sudo update-grub

I found several sources for this workaround including: arch forums,
ubuntu forums and the hpsupport forums.

If you disable the OS's control of the fan with this workaround then I
would be careful that the BIOS is doing it's job correctly without the
OS by paying attention to the heat of your laptop and by listening to
the sound of the fans. Also, ensure that any useful fan control options
are enabled in BIOS settings.

2012-08-08 Thread Apport retracing service
Thank you for your report!

However, processing it in order to get sufficient information for the
developers failed (it does not generate a useful symbolic stack trace). This
might be caused by some outdated packages which were installed on your system
at the time of the report:

outdated debug symbol package for initscripts: package version
2.88dsf-13.10ubuntu13 dbgsym version 2.88dsf-13.10ubuntu11.1
outdated debug symbol package for module-init-tools: package version

Please upgrade your system to the latest package versions. If you still
encounter the crash, please file a new report.

Thank you for your understanding, and sorry for the inconvenience!

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 966744] Re: Resume from suspend leaves me with black screen or a screen of the desktop before it suspended (though the mouse still moves/changes cursor)

2012-08-08 Thread idsfa
The most recent updates from the xorg-edgers PPA work with the kernel
from the PPA and has now been a couple of weeks without displaying this
bug.

Of course, the known Unity bug with this PPA (no icons on dock) is
still unresolved, so this may not be a solution for everyone.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 969860] Re: fglrx uses 100% CPU when screen turns off (spinning in glXWaitVideoSyncSGI or glXSwapBuffers)

2012-08-08 Thread Evren Yurtesen
I just installed Ubuntu 12.04 to a desktop machine with Radeon HD 5870
and compiz is using 100% when the screen is off. I didnt try any of the
workarounds on this machine. There are so many workarounds mentioned and
half of them seem to work only for half of the people. I dont know where
to start... Why compiz can not stop itself when the screen is off (since
there is nothing to show?) ...strange...

If run lid.sh manualy the script works well with its job, I see that
there is something else involved with the lid interactions and causes
the intel express graphics to fail.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 956071] Re: Xorg crashed with SIGSEGV in XIGetDeviceProperty()

2012-08-08 Thread Timo Aaltonen
Hmm, this original bug was filed a month before 1.5.99.902 was released
to precise, so it's kind of confusing to see it _fix_ the issue.. Or it
was something else back then.

That said, there's probably something weird going on with the driver
anyway, so would be great to know what upstream commit(s) broke it. I
can't reproduce it myself.

in mind you have to install the new x11proto-core-dev and then recompile

2012-08-08 Thread wonder.mice
** Description changed:

Acer Aspire One D270 (Intel Atom N2600, Intel NM10 Express, Intel GMA 3600).
Xubuntu 12.04 (also reproduced on Ubuntu 12.04).
  Fresh install with latest updates.

Problem appears when moving mouse pointer with left mouse button down.
For example, when moving window by dragging its caption. Or when
performing rectangular selection on Desktop. Or when dragging the
  scrollbar handle.

When mouse pointer moving that way it flicker (blink) on every move. When I
stop moving it (still holding left mouse button down) it disappears and appears
again when I continue moving.
Also it just disappears when I left-click without move and appears again only
after mouse move.

- Interesting, that issue doesn't reproduces directly after the boot. No
- flickering when dragging windows, for example.

2012-08-08 Thread David Perkinson
I believe http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=11926504 solved the
problem for me. (In fact, under 11.04, I fixed a similar problem by
creating a file /etc/pm/sleep.d/20_chvt_mjf containing the following:

#!bin/sh

case "$1" in
  suspend) chvt 1; ;;
  resume) chvt 7; ;;
esac

return 0

but I have not tried that under 12.04.) I am running 12.04 on a
thinkpad x200t.

When I stop moving it (still holding left mouse button down) it
disappears and appears again when I continue moving.

Interesting, that issue doesn't reproduces directly after the boot. No
flickering when dragging windows, for example.

However, after some program changes mouse cursor shape to animated
"rotating progress indicator" (something like this http://cur.cursors-
4u.net/cursors/images6/cur593.gif) the curso begins to blink until next
reboot. Such program can be Update Manager or Ubuntu Software Center -
they both switch mouse pointer shape to animated "in progress"
indicator.

About the "Can't open ./dstack" error: you need to download the script
first. It's attached on comment #4.

> Also, how can I enter the command when the problem disappears as soon
as I unlock my machine?

Try this:

  sudo sh -c "sleep 5; sh $HOME/dstack compiz" >> compizstack.txt

Launch the command, immediately lock the screen and wait for 10 seconds,
then unlock the screen. This will dump the stack in the middle of the
screen lock.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1033263] Re: Ubuntu 12.04 freezes with nividia drivers

2012-08-08 Thread Leann Ogasawara
The issue here seems to stem from the Nvidia drivers. I'm reassigning
this to the nvidia-graphics-drivers package for better visibility.

Also, just as an added note, I'm not familiar with any kernels being
provided from the PPA you noted (ppa:upubuntu-com/kernel-amd64).

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 977804] Re: Unity crashes when many windows are opened (intel_do_flush_locked failed: No space left on device)

2012-08-08 Thread André Glória
As asala I too have a fully updated Ubuntu 12.04 (today there was even
an update to compiz).

But the problem remains and I have like 7 to 9 windows opened...

Any time there is a freeze unity says
"intel_do_flush_locked failed: No space left on device"

and in dmesg I see
"[ 5932.613235] [drm:drm_mode_getfb] *ERROR* invalid framebuffer id
[ 6039.184478] [drm:drm_mode_getfb] *ERROR* invalid framebuffer id"

Don't know if is useful information but the errors seem to be linked.

Confirmed. Workarounds don't work. I would love to supply the stack info

This is https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/x11-utils/+bug/1028274
and https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=808561

[Impact]
xwininfo segfaults if called with an out-of-range screen number.

[Test Case]
1. xwininfo -root -display :0.0
2. xwininfo -root -display :0.1

Actual Behavior:
 * First command passes
 * Second command segfaults
Expected Behavior:
 * First command passes
 * Second command returns an error message without segfaulting

---

On Ubuntu 8.04 this error message used to be "cannot open display :0.1".

The problem could lie in libxcb (I'm no expert)
xcb_connection_has_error() no longer returning true in the -display :0.1
case, but I've attached a patch for xwininfo anyway (sorry about the
downstream format etc, not ready to jump into git). My lingering
concern is over how many other bits of code use libxcb in this way, and
may have had their assumptions broken. I.e. is the "right" place to fix
this problem longer term in libxcb?

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 956071]

2012-08-08 Thread Yaroslav Halchenko
(In reply to comment #3)
> Does debian carry any patches?

yes. See
http://patch-tracker.debian.org/package/xorg-server/2:1.12.3-1
for details

Never happened for me while switching VT. although I do not do that
regularly... ok -- switched to VT 1 and back (Ctrl-Alt-1 and then
randomly Alt-left/right till reaching X) quite a few times (around 10)
-- no problem. With suspend I think I would have experienced it by
then. Also, may be of relevance:

if X crashes during suspend and I end up again at the kdm login prompt
-- I would still have my 'half-moon' light blinking until I switch to
e.g. VT 1 -- then it would finally suspend.

> What desktop environment is this?

happened originally with KDE4 + awesome... now it is XFCE + awesome --
the same story

> something is trying to change the property

my ~/.xsession has

awesome &
sleep 3
xfce4-session

> Finally, if you can reproduce it easily, can you try running X through

It is reproducible on around 5-10th occasion on random -- never yet
tried to cause it on purpose -- I thought to give it excessive
troubleshooting one day... if I get a moment I will run it through
valgrind... although if it is some kind of a race condition between
threads, it might not get triggered

2012-08-08 Thread Peter Hutterer
Does debian carry any patches? if so, can you reproduce this with a
vanilla X server? I just vt-switched about 50 times with 1.12.99.902 but
it doesn't happen here.

What desktop environment is this? something is trying to change the
property after the VT switch, so I'd need a similar setup here.

Finally, if you can reproduce it easily, can you try running X through
valgrind to see if you get any invalid writes?

I've raised the importance as this seems to be the equivalent of a large
amount of bug reports on Ubuntu via launchpad. It affects PCs of several

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1026777] Re: Xorg segfault: kicks out to login screen

2012-08-08 Thread Andy Iverson
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 956071 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/956071

Just confirming that there have been no crashes for me after reverting
the xserver-xorg-input-synaptics version and locking it in synaptic
package manager as well (advice from other bug #32 linked to above).

The other workarounds that have the trackpad seen as a basic ps2 mouse
limit the functionality of the trackpad. But simply reverting the
version has solved the crashes. So as suggested by jmalter, it does seem
to be a regression in the current version.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 956071] Re: Xorg crashed with SIGSEGV in XIGetDeviceProperty()

2012-08-08 Thread Andy Iverson
Thomas in #34 makes a good point. The fix from #31 impairs the
functionality of the touchpad. I have changed using the advice from
#32, namely installing the previous version of xserver-xorg-input-
synaptics in synaptic package manager and then locking the version
there. It does seem that this indeed solves the crashes.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 973096] Re: Nvidia driver causes xorg crash

FYI: Ubuntu moved nvidia driver to 1.1 and is now important security
update.

Version 295.40-0ubuntu1.1:

  * SECURITY UPDATE: privilege escalation via kernel memory access
- debian/dkms/patches/blacklist-vga-pmu-registers.patch: blacklist
  more offsets in nv.{c,h}.
- debian/dkms.conf{.in}: added new patch.
- CVE number pending

Haven't tried 1.1 but highly doubt this would fix it according to the
updates. Volunteers? :)

Milestone: None => ubuntu-12.04.1

** Description changed:

  [IMPACT]

renders IVB GT1 systems basically inoperable, with massive distortion on
  screen

also affects systems on the certification queue

  [TESTCASE]

  boot 12.04 on a IVB GT1 (HD2500) system

  [Regression Potential]

None, the changes are oneliners to reduce the max thread count on IVB
GT1, which matches the current (internal?) intel specs
+
+ [NOTE]
+
+ The mesa update is added on top of a current SRU in -proposed, which is
+ already tested elsewhere. This commit should not risk that SRU, or vise
+ versa (mesa got an exception from the TB)

  --

I have a Intel 3570 CPU (Ivy Bridge) with built in 2500 graphics [1].
There is a lot of artifacts on screen, both in lightdm and in unity. There
more or less impossibly to read any text on screen.
I have tested quantal and the packages from ppa:xorg-edgers/ppa without any
improvement. I had high hopes what xf86-video-intel 2.20.2 was the solution
because it contains ivy bridge fixes, but still no result. [2]

  Note (link 2):
"For the last 9 months, since 2.16.901, we have been shipping a driver that
does not work on IvyBridge GT1 systems (HD2500 graphics); we were telling
the GPU to use an invalid number of threads for the pixel shader and this
in turned caused the GPU to hang."

With a plain install of precise I only see artifacts, but X hangs (hard)
when I'm using quantal or the packages from ppa:xorg-edgers/ppa

My current ugly workaround is to remove the intel driver and let X fall
back to something else, not a perfect solution but the system is usable.

Currently the system is running 12.04 with ppa ppa:xorg-edgers/ppa.
  I have xserver-xorg-video-intel
2:2.20.2+git20120731.fd3a1236-0ubuntu0sarvatt~precise installed, the system
hangs hard after I log in, or sometimes the GPU hangs and the screen goes to
power save.

The system is not in use and I'm free to install and test whatever
version and/or packages you want me to install.

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 966744] Re: Resume from suspend leaves me with black screen or a screen of the desktop before it suspended (though the mouse still moves/changes cursor)

2012-08-08 Thread Éric Piel
lid.sh does quite a few things, but with Unity, without xscreensaver, and with
an intel card, it basically does this when closing the screen:
xset dpms force off

and when opening the screen:
xset dpms force on

** Description changed:

This issue is reproducible 100% of the time and I recommend trying the
applications Firefox or Chromium to reproduce it. With stock desktop
effects, minimizing and restoring a window causes the bottom of the
titlebar to tear, causing a very noticeable thick white horizontal line
to appear between the titlebar and the window during the transition.
