[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 973506] Re: Huge processor's loading by Xorg process when nvidia proprietary drivers installed
With high X CPU bugs, *typically* the cause ends up being a client program rather than X. The reason is that X is just a server and its load is driven by client requests. So if some client is stuck in a loop making X calls, that can show up as high CPU on the X process. However, with nvidia who knows. It's rare but not unknown for there to be driver bugs that cause high CPU on X. As a general rule, with bugs against nvidia, unless it's a packaging issue or something that quite definitely is wrong on the Ubuntu side, or something you already know is fixed in a newer driver version, the bugs should be reported upstream at the nvidia forums. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to the bug report. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/973506 Title: Huge processor's loading by Xorg process when nvidia proprietary drivers installed To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-drivers/+bug/973506/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 973506] Re: Huge processor's loading by Xorg process when nvidia proprietary drivers installed
Judging from the fact that people have better luck with open source drivers and that it's been almost 4 months with no fix in sight, is this an upstream problem? nVidia isn't exactly known for jumping on driver bugs on Linux (the first thing I had to do when installing 12.04 was upgrade the driver to 302.17 before I could even get an accelerated desktop (2D worked fine). [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 1034984] [NEW] buggy touchscreen behavior affecting desktops, wm and onboard
Public bug reported: On updated Ubuntu 12.04 and 12.10 on a Airis Kira Slimpad tablet, touchscreen is quite unusable. 1/ In KDE, after a while, "taps" on anything that is handled by plasma- desktop seem to be ignored. For example, clicking on the "K" menu does exactly the same thing as moving the cursor with a regular mouse on it : it shows a help bubble and no menu appears. Before that, everything works ok. This seems to be triggered after a specific action. It always happen after dragging a plasmoid of the desktop with the touchscreen or a regular mouse. This never happens after moving a plasmoid of the panel or after trying to move a locked plasmoid. Regular applications continue to work well. The same thing happens in Unity, XFCE doesn't seem to be affected. Usage of a regular mouse is not afected. Restarting X "solves" the situation. 2/ Xfwm is unusable with the touchscreen : cannot click (close, reduce...), cannot move. Compiz works while the bug described in 1/ has not been triggered. After that, Compiz has the same behavior as Xfwm. KWin and metacity are not affected. Enabling/disabling compositing doesn't matter. Using a regular mouse is not affected. 3/ moving and resizing Onboard with the touchscreen is hard. This is done by pressing the "move" button and dragging. When the cursor is out of Onboard (i.e. not in Onboard's surface), this works well. But if the cursor enters Onboard's surface, there is one move and then movements of the cursor seems to be ignored (the keyboard doesn't move anymore). Then, if the cursor leaves the surface of Onboard, Onboard moves anew. Clicking on the "move" button and trying to move Onboard without leaving its surface is completely useless. The cursor has to leave Onboard Surface. Moving Onboard with a regular mouse isn't affected. Multitouch works well at anytime (tested with MagicTouch). Installing debian sid's version of xorg solves all the problems listed above but multitouch is lost (tested on Ubuntu 12.04, not tested on Ubuntu 12.10). --- $ lsusb Bus 002 Device 003: ID 04f2:b213 Chicony Electronics Co., Ltd Bus 003 Device 002: ID 0eef:72a1 D-WAV Scientific Co., Ltd Bus 006 Device 003: ID 0cf3:3005 Atheros Communications, Inc. Timo or Jonatan, Can either of you comment on "how" the crash happens? My issue (and I think several others) was that I was kicked out to lightdm. [Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 956071] Re: Xorg crashed with SIGSEGV in XIGetDeviceProperty()
I have still been followin this bug report, but I have been busy lately, so I haven't been able to participate. The problem is still occuring, but I am not sure if it's the same bug as other posters. Also, as the outcome of both bugs seems to be the same, makes me uncertain if the original bug has been fixed, but this new one appeared, or what. There was a period where the bug didn't happen as often(of it even happened at all) so that might have been the case. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-input-synaptics in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/956071 Title: Xorg crashed with SIGSEGV in XIGetDeviceProperty() To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/oem-priority/+bug/956071/+subscriptions ___ Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat Post to : ubuntu-x-swat@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Ubuntu-x-swat] [Bug 956071] Re: Xorg crashed with SIGSEGV in XIGetDeviceProperty()
I lied, just got this with my T420s. It was my wife's session that crashed, my own was fine. Not directly related to suspend I think, there's a VT change involved when changing user sessions (mine was the active one). Synaptics seems to reprobe itself after the VT change -> (occasional) boom. It's possible that Jonatan's issue got fixed, and then when we updated -synaptics the crashes started again.
I agree that it does appear that this bug report was possibly "hijacked" as the OP issues arose before. A majority of the comments are after July 18, with nothing between March and July. But as the OP hasn't been involved since March, it is hard to know what the status of the "original bug" is. If necessary maybe this bug can be left open and the work on finding the problem with the newer version of the xserver-xorg-input-synaptics could be tied to one of the more recent "duplicates" (https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1026777) and the two could be separated as not being duplicates. Without input from the OP it seems to be uncertain.

Hello, I just arrived to this bug and read all posts, took me 5 hours yet to compile a summary: Summary of ideas that seem to have fixed, or improved the situation of some people: #91 (install kernel 3.3.6) #112 (choose the right nouveau driver) #117 (install kernel 3.4.0) #165 (sudo intel_reg_write 0x2120 '0x1206800' in /etc/rc.local) #279 (USB ports) #321 (combination of i915.i915_enable_rc6=0 and i915.i915_enable_fbc=0) (also in #349) #336 (disable monitor power management) #370 (Win7 dual boot) #373 (use flash aid) #429 (stop OS fan management) Summary of the 3 types of bugs: (Sorry, I might definitely be wrong, the amount of information is too large for my poor brain, I still spend quite some time reading the 430 posts, and re-reading many) bug 1) bug that freezes the graphics, but the mouse pointer is still moving most can still access the console ctrl-alt-F1, but not always... can reboot through CTRL+ALT+SysRq REISUB typically happens once every 5 to 20 min, impossible to work (sometimes once a day: #20, sometimes at boot time: #79) looks strongly correlated to Nvidia proprietary drivers (many cases), but may also affects Nouveau drivers (#3, #20, #79, #149) moving to the console may hard-freeze it all it looks like there is nothing in /var/log/syslog Posts describe solutions by: - #112 (choose the right nouveau driver) Changing kernel doesn't seems to help These people should join this bug: Nvidia, Complete freezes with only mouse pointer still moving (Please read #425 for more precise) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1033263 bug 2) bug that freezes graphics and mouse last sound sample repeated continuously no mouse, no keyboard, no ctrl-alt-SysRq REISUB only reports about ssh not working, one post about ping working typically happens once every 1 to 8 hours looks correlated to SandyBridge and IvyBridge, but also affects people with: AMD Fusion (#373), Nvidia Nouveau (#277), ATI Radeon graphics with flgrx drivers (#49) some people have things in /var/log/syslog might loose data Posts describe solutions by: - using kernel 3.3.6 (#91), many success, but not always (see #120) - using kernel 3.4.0 (#117) - combination of i915.i915_enable_rc6=0 and i915.i915_enable_fbc=0 (#321), many success, but one (#401) - using Debian 6.0.5 (#124) These people should join this bug: IvyBridge, 64 bit System freezes (mouse, keyboard) (see #308) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/10 Other comments: - Problem persists with regular Unity and Unity 2D desktop. - Problem does NOT occurr when using old Nvidia 8400GS discrete graphics card. bug 3) bug that freezes graphics, but can still access the console ctrl-alt-F1 post GC occurrence (5/6 ATI & 1/6 Xeon): ATI RV515GL, no proprietary driver; ATI Radeon X1400; ATI X1400; radeon X2300; Radeon HD 3200; VGA Xeon E3-1200 Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller mouse might or might not move might completely freeze when going back to X might be related to compiz (#12) might loose data Interesting comments: - Still freezing, both with kernel 3.2.0.24 and kernel 3.3.6. These people should create a new bug report. Obviously this is not complete, since other people fixed their problems using other ways... crazy bug! Since I'm trying to have a full summary, here is another broad bug report for the records: Kernel Hard Freezing Very Often (see #279) https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/908335 More generally, as both an (external) programmer and an Ubuntu user I have to agree this is both: - very very hard to track down where it can come from (the variety of messages is incredible) - very very annoying this critical bug is not yet fixed (two month and you can't work well) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-video-intel in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/993187 Title: ubuntu 12.04 completely freezes frequently.
